In his October 12 bulletin to members, Executive VicePresident Orrie W. Hamilton of the Southern California Retail Lumber Assn. said that since George Cordrey entered the service of the association May 16 as field man he has called on4l9 dealers in the area, traveled over 10,000 miles, and secured 17 new dealer members; he attended eight area meetings in that time and formed seven other area groups to hold regular monthly meetings, from Santa Barbara to Imperial Valley.

"ft is our aim to take the services of the association directly to the dealers in their respective areas through our field service, and George is doing an excellent job in this respect," Hamilton wrote. He added that Cordrey,s background gave him experience to help in solving most any dealer problems.

As of October 12, the SCRLA has 260 active (dealer) members and 103 associate members.

September Housing Stcrts Decline

Housing starts for September were reported at 93,000, of which 89,900 were private housing. It was the lowest September volume since 1949 and skidded the annual rate to 1,000,000. Actual starts so far this year totaled 879,300, a decline of. l7/o from the same period last year. The NAHB believed the 1,000,000 figure would be attained in 1956 and that it would be the eighth year in a row in which starts reached a million.
