Associotion Ponders Chonges

Composition of a 32-man National Lumber Manufacturers Asso' ciation committee on industry needs has won approval of a joint session of the NLMA executive committee and the steering com' mittee of the National Wood Promtion Program in Washington.

Originally proposed by Western Wood Products Association, the new committee will examine industry-wide group relations and responsibilities with special reference to (I) consolidation of NLMA and NWPP activities; (2) determination of appropriate 'onational" activities and stipulation of those which might be in' creased, maintained at present levels or modified; (3) uniformity of the national dues basis to support recommended activities; and (4) a change in the NLMA name to better reflect its preseni indus' try role.

The committee will include the following representation from the regional and supporting groups: Western Wood Products Association, 13; Southern Pine Association, 5; California Red' wood Association, 2; Southern Hardwood Lumber Manufacturers Association, 2; other, 3. The American Plywood Association will be invited to name 3 and the Canadian Wood Development Council 2 non-voting observers, and the NLMA president and first vice-president will be members ex-officio without vote.

Simpson Donotes Public Grove

A large redwood memorial grove for public enjoyment has been dedicated five miles northeast of Crescent City by the Simpon Lumber Company.

The virgin timberland-which will ,border Highway 199 for one and one-half miles-will be maintained in memory of two early-day Pacific Coast lumbermen, Sol G. Simpson and Mark E. Reed.

Public area within the Simpson Reed Grove will include a memorial bench carved from a two-ton redwood log and the Sol G. Simpson tree, a 286-foot-high redwood 33 feet in circumference.

Re-elected by the Redwood Inspection Service to serve for the 196,4-65 fiscal year are: Harry A. Merlo, president; John L. Robins, vice president; and Philip T. Farnsworth, secretary-treasurer. manager. Also re-elected to serve on the board of directors are: Julian N. Cheatham. Russell H. Ells. C. Russell Johnson, Leslie W'. Ley and Stanwood A. i\Iurphy. Newly elected to the board are James Franke and Darrell H. Schroeder.

Franke is well known to California lumbermen as president' manager of the Twin Parks Lumber Co. of Arcala, California.

Schroeder is a newcomer to the redwood industry and is general manager of the recently opened Miller Redwood Co. complex at Cresoent City, Calif. Now 4I years old, Schroeder started his career in Nlill City, Oregon. He took his degree in Logging Engi' neering from Oregon State University. In 1946, Schroeder was a logging engirreer with Stimson Lumber Co., Forest Grove, Oregon, the parent company of the present Miller Redwood. Schroeder came to Crescent City in 1955 to head Rellim Redwood Co.. charged with the operation and management of forest lands. In 1963, he took on the management of the new Miller Redwood Co. and supervised construction of the mill.

Under his management, Miller Redwood has become a leader in the recovery of the Crescent City area {ollowing the Good Friday disaster. A modern planing mill is nearing completion and dry-kiln facilities are planned. The Miller complex will also eventually include a silvachemical plant and a mechanical pulp plant for full utilization of the timber.
