Foreslers Lounch Crosh Progrom To Protect Wesf's Pine Forests
Foresters in the West have launched a crash program to wipe out an insect that threatens to cripple the productive capacity of the pine forests of the western United States.
The Northwest Forest Pest Action Council has approved a research proposal to develop methods for completely eradicating the European pine shootmoth, an invader which has become established in ornamental trees throughout parts of Washington. If it once gets into native stands in the l2-state western pine region, there is presently no efiective way known to halt its destruction o{ pine trees.

If the efiort to eradicate the shootmoth in the West is successful, it will become one of only a handful of insect species to come under complete control of man.
The Council, a cooperative-action group made up of representatives of state and federal forestry agencies and forest industry companies, is recommending several research programs, one of which may be an attempt to develop chemical attractants that would copy the distinctive odor of the female shootmoth. The misleading whifis would be used to confuse the insects, thereby preventing reproduction.
E. L. Kolbe, chief forester for Western Wood Products Association and chairman of the Council,.said other research may also investigate raising male shootmoths in captivity, sterilizing them and turning them loose in great quantities-perhaps as many as 200 sterile males to each wild male. The objective would be to overwhelm the wild males with competition for the available mates.
The Council reiterated its stand that judicious use of chemicals is necessary to protection of the nation's forest resource and that chemicals are presently being used to preserve forests without damage to wildlife or other resources.
The Council also heard reports on a worm that rides the winds and is spreadi.g through fir forests of southeastern Oregon.
