Tough Forestry Training
(Continued, lrom Page 14) timbero yet ever-changing-is altered from year to year to meet the pattern of the times. New subject matter is introduced, as the need for new direction is revealed in research. This keeps the forestry camp and instruction alive and vital.
There is no tuition charged for summer Camp. But the students must pay for the day-to-day operations of the camp-about $200 per student for the term-and they must pitch in on work details to keep the camp running efficiently.
Because the students who attend Summer Camp must forego summer jobs during the lO-week session, alumni foresters have established a loan fund to aid ambitious youths who need a boost through Summer Camp and school. o'We don't want anyone to get fouled up in his education for want of a few dollars," the old grads say.
And most of the old grads have a strong feeling for forestry,. even after leaving school. A recent survey showed that 65 per cent of the UC forestry graduates have stayed in the profession. A former assistant Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. in a recent interview, described the discipline and

training ofiered at camp as "an integral part of the school" at Berkeley and Meadow Valley-and possible added factors in. keeping graduates within the profession.
This loyalty to the profession, further reflected in the financial generosity of the alumni, is only one point in evidence of the high regard in which Summer Camp is held by forestry graduates. School of Forestry staffers, seeking a line on what former students considered their most memorable experience at Cal, sent out a questionnaire recently. It must have been no great surprise to find ooForestry Summer C"*p" written on most of the reply cards.
