Enfire Lossen Mill Town Sold

The town of Westwood, once a thriving lumber community in the Lassen county mountains, has been sold lock, stock and barrels to two Los Angeles auctioneers, The San Francisco Examiner reported September 30. The town and box plant, covering about 750 acres, was sold by the !'ruit Growers Supply Co. The buyers said they intended to develop the spot as a resort town and bring in industries.

More than 500 families still remain in Westwood and commute to jobs in lumber mills in surrounding Sierra communities. The area has been generally logged off. The town was bought in December 1944 from the Red River Lumber Co. It had been built almost overnight in 1913 with a railroad expansion to expedite lumbering. Fruit Growers Supply Co. branched out from boxes to pine plywood panels and in 1954 switched to production of a single plywood called "Craveneer.' From 12 million to 15 million feet of logs were put through the plywood plant each year to make about 30,000,000 sq. ft. of plywood. The sawmill and green lumber department shut down this May and the dry kiln dperation closed in June.

The Los Angeles developers now plan to utilize the surrounding hunting and fishing areas, mountain parks and lakes, as Westwood is on the through route of the Western Pacific, and the Southern Pacific railroad has it as a terminal branch.

Production and shipments of the 20 mills reporting to the California Redwood Association during August were 61,645,000 feet and 59,016,000 feet, respectively. August figures showed a seasonal increase over July in production, shipments and orders, but a decrease of 4,154,000 feet in production and of 12,913,00O feet in shipments compared with August 1955. Orders on hand August 31 were 60,570,000 feet, compared with 96,278,000 feet on the 1955 date.
