Fire Destroys Temeculo Yqrd

Flames which gained great headway before being discovered destroyed the Temecula Valley Lumber Company September 4. Every part of the business was lost, including the fences which surrounded it. The yard was owned by Steve Hathaway of the Oceanside (Calif.) Lumber Co., but has been operated for a number of years by Charles Watson of Temecula. The loss was serious to residents of the district hill country because Temecula is a natural shopping center because of its distance from Hemet.

State Forestry headquarters at Perris received report of the fire at 12:33 a.m., Sept. 5. Seven State Forestry trucks rolled on the fire from all neighboring stations. The fire was visible as far away as the Menifee valley. "How the people of Temecula slept through it is a mystery," said a spokesman. It rvas reported by a passing motorist from a Temecula cafe finally, after the fire probably had an hour's headway.

In addition to the yard building and office, several truckand-trailer loads of lumber stacked in the yard and lumber in the racks was lost. Two trucks were also destroyed. Firemen were still working at the scene at 8:00 a.m.
