The cedar-lined closet project started rvhen the firm's partners, Robert Patton and William Dressler, sarv a cedar closet in a home in which they were installing insulation. They reasoned that cedar closets installed in model homes in building projects lr'ould interest prospective home buyers in having cedar closets built into their homes in the development.

Cedar-lined closets in display homes in builders' subdivision projects have been unqualifiedly successful. Over 52,000 board feet of aromatic red cedar closet lining has been used to line an averag'e of four closets in each of the homes built in the subdivisions.

The average cedar-lined closet costs the builder $32. Patton and Dressler ofier a package deal on the average linen closet, cedar-lining it for only $19 compared with the plastering cost {or the same qloset of about $21.

Patton and Dressler have the installation of cedar closets dor.vn to a scientific, assembly-line basis. The dimensions of each closet are measured in advance, then the tongued and grooved cedar boards are custom pre-cut to fit the individual closet. Using the pre-cut .ivood, one carpenter can line three average closets in one eight-hour day. Measurements; cutting and installing are so accurate that there are no wasted materials. Even the cedar sawdust is. used. It is sold to pet supply manufacturers, rvho fill dog bed mattresses with cedar sawdust to repel fleas.

The cedar closets in model homes are promoted and merchandised through a co-operative advertising campaign rvith the builder. Sales of cedar closets through model homes in the high, medium and low-priced ranges, Patton says, indicates that closets lined rvith aromatic red cedar closet lining are desired by families in all financial planes.
