A Gorreclionr Corter Lumber Co., OAKTAND ls o Thriving Business, Too
The CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT sincerely regrets any embarrassment that may have been caused to the Carter Lumber Company, of Oakland, California, through a reference to it in an article in the June 15, 1956, issue regarding the Carter Mill & Lumber Company, of Los Angeles. In writing up the Carter retail yard of Los Angeles, a reference was made to the "former Carter Lumber Company of Oakland." The wording was intended only to mean the business formerly personally conducted there by Morris B. Carter, now operating the Carter Mill & Lumber Co. in Los Angeles. However, it was not so construed by the principals of the present Carter Lumber Company in Oakland and, in case any other readers mistook an inaccurate wording, we hasten to make restitution of the facts and report that there is not only now (and has been for'several years) a present Carter Lumber Company in Oakland 6ut that it is operating very successfully under the ownership of Mrs. F. D. A. Meglen.

Mrs. Meglen declares that her Carter Lumber Company of Oakland is still very much in business, as it has been since 1940, and that, furthermore, it is going out FOR business not out of business. Mrs. Meglen brings to our attention that the lumber company of the same name in Southern California is not and never has been connected with her long-established, progressive yard in Oakland.
The Carter Lumber Company, one of the Bay area's foremost retail yards, is located on a S-acre corner at 400 High St. in the heart of industrial Oakland. It has long been known as a keen competitor for both the industrial and contractor trade. and in recent months the firm has been undergoing a refitting for the walk-in trade as well. The physical assets of the yard include 60,000 sq. ft. of under-cover storage area, five trucks, carriers, lifts, spur-track facilities and all of the other equipment a modern building materials yard needs.
The office and showroom alone occupy more than 11,000 sq. ft. of building space fronting on High street. Recently, Mrs. Meglen has further diversified the (Continued on Page 10)
In the last large area of condensatiooin and under the toofingvapor barriers have failed to give anything but a partial answer. 'Wilson Ait-cor Roof Decking now gives the final, complete answer with a scientifc method of removing moisture from the decking itself- by ueatber air oentilation.
Architects and builders are no longer limitedby local conditions of climatein their selection of the finished toofing mateiial. For any type of sructure and any pitch of roof, ltr?'ilson Air-cor provides the dependable roof decking.
126 days of testing by the Engineeting Research Department of a leading State University demonstrated "the feasibility of actually drying a wet roof of the Air-cor rype by weather air ventilation." The published report recognizes the impracticality of a perfec! vapor barrier. Vith STilson Air-cor, there is no need for a perfect barriet.' The revolutionary principle of ventilation embodied in Wilson Air-cor Roof Decking ovelcomes the severest conditions of humidity arid temperature. Extensive research and actual use prove that Wilsoo Air-cor makes condensation a problem of the past.
The description of this remarkable product in the Homasote Handbook begins: "The panel consists of 2 x 2 wood members 12" o.c. nailed and glued between two pieces of 75,62" Homasote. On the lower inside of the Vilson Air-cor Panel there is /{' of batt type insulation, with a vapor barrier on the bottom side, and a ventilated wttsoN

AtR- COR ROOFING PANETS paper on the top side. At each end there are rwo small wood blocks to support the Homasote. Vith only these two small blocks, there is a width of le' ar each end for air to flow from panel to panel." Ait enters at the roof edges-where a rake mold is nailed on f(" blocks over screen wire-and insect-free air circulates the length of the roofing.
The Handbook continues with specifications, test data, and building insructions. For example, you may be surprised to learn that the problem of ridge and filler has been taken care of with the Wilson Air-cor Ridge Panel. You will be happy to 6nd that Wilson Air-cor is actually a Enished ceiling-with three beautiful under-surfaces to choose from (or even Sote Asbestos Board). Accurate tables and complete diagrams give the rigbt information, from width of ridge required for any number of courses, even to pre-drilled nail holes - just one more example of the tnow-how of the Homasote Handbook.
The new 68-page Homasote Handbook has the right answers to 99 other building problems-answers backed by 46 years'experience in the making of quality materials. !fle are proud of this book, and have confidence in its basic value to every architect, builder, and dealer.
