This r,vood, being free of pitch, is receptive to paint, stain, varnish and other finishes. Painting exterior sidings and trim of West Coast hemlock gives the master craftsman a sense of complete satisfaction. The smooth, clear, unblemished surfaces supply the "canvas" upoll which the skilled worker can demonstrate his full ability.

Interiors-'rvhether in wide clear wall panels, mouldings and trim, or in West Coast hemlock floors-present a finished appearance highly pleasing to the owner, the architect and contractor. Mouldings and interior trim have a minimum tendency to split in nailing; they do not splinter : their color tones remain light, while their resistance t<r wear increases as they grow older. Few other.woods lend themselves so well to the handsome and varied finishing effects it is possible to achieve with West Coast hemlock.

West Coast hemlock also commands many industrial uses. It is easily machined to a satin finish. It glues easily, and has good holding power on fastenings. It makes excellent shelving, furnitttre, cabinets, ironing boards. kitchen interiors and millwork. The fact that it is tasteless and odorless makes it well suited for food containers. and its nail-holding power re'commends it for boxes and crates. Its strength, resilience, light weight and uniform texture have led to its wide acceptance in the manufacture of the finest industrial and fire ladders. During the Second World War these same qualities resulted in its very extensive use in the production of airplanes and gliders. The common grades of West Cost hemlock make first-rate ir-rdustrial floors because of their freedom from splintering.

They are available in either vertical or flat grain, and are useC to advantage by millwork plants, cabinet makers, sash, door and furniture factories. Vertical grain West Coast hernlock is among the few native woods recommended for the manufacture of Venetian blinds.
