HOUR OF OCCURRENCE - INDUSTRIAL INJURIES IN LUMBER INDUSTRY
In the lumber industry, as in most other industries, there is a marked fluctuation in the number of industrial injuries rvhich occur at dillerent honrs of the day.
According to a special snrvey made by the Division o{ Labor Statistics and Research of the California DeparLment of Industrial Relations. the number of industrial injuries in the moruing increases steadily each horlr, reaching a peak betrveen 10 and 1l a.m. N{ore than 14 per cent oi all the accidents reported in July and August. 19.18, o.:ctrrred during this hour. This compares rn'ith 8 per cent <luring the l.rour betn'een 8 and 9 a.m.
As shorvn in the clock chart, tl-re number of injurics drops off slightll' betn'een 11 and 12 noon bnt rcmairrs relatively high.
Aftcr a very sharp decrease cluring the noon hour, thtr number again brrilds up each hour to a second peak bctrveerl 3 and 4 p.m. Approxirnatelr. 15 per cent of all acciclents occurred during this hour. Follou'ing this peak, thc number clrops off r'ery rapidll'.
Thc sharp fluctnation in the number oi injurics drrringthe b;rsic u-orl< day is indicatecl in the follon'ing tabulation'
Per cent of total day
'I'hc sharp peaks during certain hours of the day suggest that consicleratior.r 'be given by those in accident preventiorr u'orl< as to u-hat steps may be taken to reduce these peai<s :rrrrl thus reduce the over-all total of injuries.
I,lclitor's Note. The article and chart reproduced abovc \\'crc prepared by the Division of Labor Statistics and Rescarch of the California Department of Industrial Relatiorrs us the result of a request by the California Lumber .,\cciclerrt Prevcntion Association. The above chart rvas shown at the aunual meeting of this Association by \f. I. (,ershcrrson, chief rif the Division of Labor Statistics antl llcsearch. Thc presentation created so much interest aln()ng the .\ssociation members that it rnerits being rcprorlucecl for the benefit of the lumber industry as a rvholc.
