A graduate of Fort Bragg High School, Al attended Oregon State College and San Jose State College, majoring in business administration. He served for two years with the Army at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.

In its announcement, the company notes that "Al has a good lumber background, having worked in various departments of Union Lumber Company at Fort Bragg. He has worked with the idea of a sales career in mind."
