Symposium on the Weotherobiliry of Wood
The paint, lumber, and construction industries'stake in the technical and marketing aspects of the weatherability of wood will be reviewed at an American Chemical Society Symposium at the Society's l44th National Meeting in Los Angeles, April 3rd.
Location is the Biltmore Hotel.
eonrad J. Campbell, program chairmano has asked wood scientists and market specialists to oogive the chemical industry enough facts to stimulate research by showing that the weatherability of wood is a problem which, if solved, could result in an increase in the size of this already attractive market for chemicals."
The Symposium will try to acquaint the chemical industry with the technical and economic problems and opportunities involved in the improvement of exterior wood treatments. The Symposium will be one of three given by the Division of Coatings and Plastics Chemistry as part of the National ACS Meeting.
Professor J. A. Zivnuska, of the University of California, will outline the changing structure of the U.S. lumber industry and how it affects its attitudes toward research and development. Dr. Harold B. Gatslick of the California Redwood Association will speak on the inherent qualities of wood and the possibilities for profit if the paint and lumber industries solve the remaining problems of exterior finish. Arthur Lahey of the Weyerhaeuser Company will explore more generally the potentials for the chemical industry in wood, covering glues and impregnants as well as surface treatments. Dr. Lars C. Bratt of the Stan{ord Research Institute will report on present and predictable demand for exterior wood products. Dr. Fred E. Dickinson of the California Forest Products Laboratory will compare dimensional stability of plywood, metal, and lumber under changing temperature and moisture conditions, and Professor Alfred J. Stamm of North Carolina State College will discuss the effects of dimensional stabilization of wood on weatherability.
Dr. Harold Tarkow of Forest Products mErcHAilf
Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin will pre' sent a paper by himself and Carole Southerland on the Interaction of Wood with Poly' meric Materials. Dr. Frederick F. Wangaard of Yale University will discuss the Morphological and chemical characteristics of wood. Dr. A. S. Gregory of Weyerhaeuser Timber Company will present a paper by himself, B. Y. Couch, and Donald F. Laughnan, Simpson Timber Company on the effects of weathering on wood and wood-paint systems, and Dr. Catherine G.
