It's Showtime!

Generally considered the hottest new trade show on the circuit, the North American Wholesale Lumber Association's Traders Market is a good example of the evolving world of industry trade shows.

Once upon a time, dealer and wholesaler associations took a full week for their annual convention, now it's often only four days and the new gatherings, like the Traders Market, are three-day affairs.

Recognizing this, our October issue will feature a full-color supplement devoted to the Traders Market, reviewing the front line buyer and seller format that promises to draw 1,500 people to this third annual at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, November 5-7. Unlike the dealer shows, wholesalers will be there as attendees. rather than exhibitors.

Historically, association meetings were annual, relaxed conclaves that were as much social as business. Then the trade show became part ofthe convention. Later, business seminars and minishows were held at various times of the year. Companies held their own product shows. Then

the co-ops began their buying shows, impinging upon traditional association turf. Today, many state dealer associations hold successful shows, though some are smaller than 10 or 20 years ago.

Time is the factor that comes into play in assessing the show situation. Vendors usually greet new shows with, "Oh no, not another show. We're already maxed out in both time and budget." As the pace of American business moves more rapidly, the before, during and after and the costs involved weigh heavily on any potential participant.

More and more, both vendor and showgoer want a situation where business can be done. Fewer of the meet-and-greet, howdy-and-the handshake shows are retaining their full complement of visitors. No one seems to have the time: the demands of business to be profitable are unrelenting.

The marketplace will be the final arbiter of how many and what kind of trade shows will survive and prosper. But as NAWLA's Traders Market has shown, a shortened format at the right price, conducive to business, will still draw a big crowd.

wood reached an all-time high in 1996 of 680 million sq. ft. (3/8"), a l4.5qo increase from the previous year. Growth in the last three years has been at a rate of l'Vo per year.

Retail sales of treated plywood now account for over TOVo of its total demand-boats, permanent wood foundations and fire retardant treated plywood make up the remaining 307o.

Material Handling

More plywood is also being used by material handling professionals as they search for cost-effective alternatives to solid lumber pallets and higher-cost plastic bins and containers.

Benefits for pallet users include increased durability and improved rack resistance compared with traditional wood and plastic designs, and better surface friction and repairability compared with plastic pallets. For bin and container users, plywood also offers greater strength and product protection.

APA forecasts the rate

of growth in some industrial markets, including panel deck pallets and containers, to rise significantly over the next few years.

APA forecasts the rate of growth in some industrial markets, including panel-deck pallets and containers, to rise significantly over the next few years. "Currently less than lOTo of pallets are manufactured with plywood," said Tom Kositzky, APA industrial market coordinator. "Each percentage point increase translates into roughly 100 million sq. ft. of new demand."

Many plywood producers, and some distributors servicing the industrial market sector, are offering specialty-grade industrial-use panels specially tailored to end-use conditions.

Upgrades in panel lay-ups include tighter cores for greater screw and nail holding, and increased use of facesanded panels for manufacturing overlays.

Using APA's Industrial Panel Selection Guide, some wholesalers and retailers are servicing larger

industrial accounts by allowing customers to specify plywood that better matches their individual requirements. Traditionally, those accounts have relied on more common standard grades.

Furniture Frames

Specialty grade panels are also making their way into the upholstered furniture frame market where plywood provides superior strength and fastener holding ability than more conventional hardwood lumber frames. Whether fumiture manufacturers use CNC routers or band saws, plywood can be cut much more efficiently than lumber, providing higher material yields and more uniform parts.

Upholstered furniture manufacturers consume about 2.5 billion bd. ft. of softwood and hardwood lumber and about 400 million sq. ft. (3/8") of structural panels. "With greater performance and much higher raw material yield, we see specialty plywood continuing to take share from lumber in this growing market," KositzkY said.

MDo/HDO

In addition to specialty grade plywood, some big box retailers are stocking more Medium DensitY Overlay (MDO) plywood to service smaller sign shops and do-it-yourselfers.

Markets that have and continue to provide some dealers with higher margin opportunities include High Density Overlay (HDO) plywood widely used in commercial construction for concrete formwork, some overlaid plywood sidings and specialty panels for smaller cabinet manufacturers.

With industrial market growth and steady residential demand, North American softwood plywood is securing a long-term, profitable future for dealers, wholesalers and distributors.

THE figures may look unimpres- I sive, with tamer increases than previous years and even some decreases in production among North America's top OSB manufacturers. But the stability of 1991 is a major contributing factor to the current rejuvenation of the OSB market.

1998 is the year that OSB demand finally started catching back up with production, and prices began to rise accordingly. A commodity primarily used in new home construction, OSB is again in high demand, bolstered by low interest rates, a robust economy and a better-than-expected housing market. For the first time in vears. OSB prices have caughr up wit-h plywood.

During the early- and mid-1990s, manufacturers kept building new plants, but demand couldn't keep up, sending prices plummeting. But there was a silver lining: low prices for OSB over the last two years did entice traditional plywood users to give OSB a try, and many seem to be making the switch permanent.

During the drought, many producers stopped expanding or even cut back production, and fewer new plants are coming on line.

Yet decreased production in a weak market doesn't always make sense for individual plants. "You

TnRACING its history back to 1852, I Union Lumber Co., Marysville, Ca., claims to be the oldest operating lumber yard west of the Mississippi River. But longevity has not brought lethargy; the store was recently voted the top Ace lumber store in California.

an extensive remodeling in 1993 of the building that houses the business. A fullline paint and hardware section and nursery were added to the existing 12,000 sq. ft. lumber yard, creating 25,000 sq. ft. of business space, and the business became an Ace Hardware affiliate.

"Remodeling has helped us concentrate more on the retail end of the business," Harry asserts. "By diversifying, we're not devoting all of our energies to one area."

With a staff of l0 employees, the store serviceq municipalities and commercial businesses as well as architectural customers and d-i-yers. "That pretty much comes with the territory," remarks store manager Harry Cheim. "We try to accommodate our customers and provide them with quality service. The service is what will keep people coming back, after all. Our roots are deep in this community."

A downturn in lumber sales led to

"Business is more competitive than ever." he continues. "There's a Meek's, an Orchard Supply and an SBS Building Center in Chico and Sacramento. Even though these cities are both about 40 miles away from here, people will drive there just the same if they feel they can save money." He further notes that lumber can be "trucked in from everywhere," another big edge for larger chains.

According to Kaye Cheim, coowner and company president, the business was "strictly a lumber yard at the time of its founding." Kaye's husband, Heiman, the other owner, is the

*'fl

third generation of Cheims to run the business. Son Harry is the fourth generation.

"The building that housed the business was built as a drive-through," reveals Harry. "People would pull up in horse-drawn carts and load their lumber onto the wagons and leave out the back."

Harry's great-grandfather, Heiman Cheim, a Prussian emigrant, purchased the company in 1873. When fire destroyed the business in 1905, the company moved across the street. A subsequent fire in 1949 totaled that location, necessitating a move to its current location, a converted feed store. Heiman and Kaye bought the business from the Cheim estate in 1970.

In an interesting footnote, a Cheim ancestor, William Green Murphy, was the brother of Mary Murphy Covillaud, for whom the town is named. The family's historical ties to the area are not lost on Harry, the proud father of a two-year-old daughter. "She'll be the fifth generation of family owners, if she's interested," he chuckles.

"By diversifying, we're not devoting allof our energies to one area."

4 ways to keep costs down

things that sit quietly on their shelves for six months or more. This cornucopia of inventory may look good in the store, but it doesn't help you if most of your customers are contractors. A retailer in this situation needs to remerchandise, by returning slowmoving inventory and stocking up on what their core group of customers wants. No retailer can be all things to all customers, and there's no sense. or cents, in trying.

L"sson 3. Centralize production and purchasing for economies of scale.

fT'S EASY for a lumber retailer to Iget into financial trouble these days. I'm a turnaround consultant, and nine times out of the l0 the reason I'm called in to help them is out-of-conftol costs. Sometimes the costs of running a yard can jump so high and so fast that they cause profits to fall even when sales revenues are increasing!

Unfortunately, keeping a lid on costs is easier said than done. But while cost control can be difficult, it isn't impossible. Here are a few lessons I've picked up over the years that will help you wrestle your costs to the ground and get out of the red ink and into the black.

L"sson 1. Understand your company better by creating an organizational chart.

If you want to make a serious stab at cost control, the frst thing you must do is create a detailed organizational chart, complete with precise, writtenout job descriptions. This will force you to look at "the big picture" of how your company as a whole operates.

A detailed organizational chart focuses on the "human element" of your company. As you construct your

chart, you'll have to make some decisions:

. The number and types of personnel needed to perform all your business's specific activities;

. Detailed job descriptions, focusing on work behavior, and

. Work flow for maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

It's sad but true:

most of the dealers I've worked with don't really know who their customers are, or what they want.

Creating an organizational chart of your company obviously takes some work. It also pays some immediate dividends:

Easier budgeting, and better cost and technical control:

Greater manpower flexibility, and Better inter-company communication and understanding of policies, procedures and lines of responsibility.

An organizational chart allows you to actually see with your own eyes how your company fits together, and makes it easier for you to quickly spot those areas that need your attention.

L"rson 2. Knowing what your customers want can reduce unwanted inventories.

It's sad but true: most of the dealers I've worked with don't really know who their customers are. or what they want. Too many try to be "mini HombBases," carrying lawn and garden items, power tools and other

Centralizing your company's purchasing and production functions will often achieve the types of economies of scale that reduce your costs enough to keep you out of the red.

Too many lumber retailers handle the essential function ofpurchasing in an informal, haphazard manner. I've seen $35 million-a-year companies where it seemed that everyone's cousin was responsible for purchasing. And, boy, did they make a mess of it!

Putting one, experienced person in charge of purchasing can save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

L"ssot 4. Link employee compensation to performance and reduce overhead.

Tling pay to performance means reducing base salaries and offering high incentives. Not only does a compensation structure of this kind reduce overhead costs, it also increases productivity. When I changed the pay structure at a lumber retailer in Utah where I acted as interim c.e.o., staff was trimmed from more than 60 to a more manageable 46. In addition, I was able to hire two very experienced managers away from a competitor, and everybody in the company ended up earning more money than they did under the old compensation system.

Compensation based on performance isn't for everyone. Some managers and staff rise to the occasion, while others fall down on the job. It's always interesting, and sometimes surprising, to see who succeeds and who fails.

By applying these lessons, a lumber retailer can avoid trouble. Once costs are under control, you can focus on pumping up your sales volume.

Wood trusses top the

engineered wood market

NGINEERED wood quiz: What's the most widely produced engineered wood building component for home construction?

- I-joists?

- Laminated veneer lumber?

- Glued laminated beams?

The answer: none of the above. The correct response is prefabricated roof and floor trusses.

About 4.5 billion bd. ft. of lumber was used for trusses last year. And,60Vo of these trusses were built with southem pine lumber, because of its strength and durability.

Trusses have steadily increased their market share over

Fewer architects and owners

want low-pitch roofs these days.

the past two decades. It's estimated that 257o of all retail building material retailers provide trusses for their contractor customers.

Roof trusses provide reliable, factory-engineered wood building components that can usually be installed faster than conventional framine. Floor trusses offer the advantage of high-strength framing and open webs, which make it possible to run ductwork, plumbing and wiring throughout the structure without drilling holes.

Architects, engineers, retailers and builders report that roof and floor trusses have benefited from two relatively recent design trends-the more dramatic visual impact of taller profile roofs, and the increase in "bonus rooms" for extra living space in the area that was formerly the attic.

Taller, Steeper Ttusses

As architects reach for steeper profiles in custom and multifamily homes, roof elevations are becoming unique and distinctive. Many building designers are turning to taller, more complex southern pine trusses to create higher roofs that give structures a more visible signature or shape. This is particularly true in roofs with multiple dormers, hips and valleys.

In the past, trusses with a 4ll2 pitch were the norm on many jobs. Today, more designers are calling for 8/12 to

10/12 pitch trusses.

Truss experts report that fewer architects and owners want lowpitch roofs these days. With the computer engineering and hightech equipment in

the truss plant, it's easier to specify the higher profile trusses.

According to Kirk Grundahl, executive director of the Wood Truss Council of America, "Owners and architects like the variety of interior ceiling profiles like coffered or tray ceilings that are achieved with steeper pitched trusses." He sees continued growth in the taller trusses, even though their height sometimes causes manufacturers to build trusses in two pieces to deal with shipping restrictions.

Attic Trusses Greate New SPace

Wood roof truss manufacturers are also capitalizing on the increasing popularity of the attic truss. It's like finding "bonus space" upstairs for bedrooms, storage, home offices or heating and air conditioning equipment.

Builders and designers note that the attic area is often wasted in new homes that are framed with conventional trusses or rafters. The solution is an attic truss that has a square, box-shaped opening down the center, between the top and bottom chords of the truss. This square opening typically receives a subfloor and wall board to become a finished room.

The amount of open attic space for a "bonus room" depends on the roof pitch and the truss span. For example, a 40-ft. attic truss with a 10/12 pitch provides more space than a 30-ft. truss with a 6112 pitch. Some of the larger trusses provide 7 to 8 ft. of headroom down the canter.

When the steeP attic trusses are used for a bonus room over the garage, the extra strength of the southern pine truss makes it possible to span the width of a two-car garage without any intermediate Posts or columns.

Hang time Selling wallpaper to beginners

ALLPAPERING is one of the most popular projects for do-ityourselfers, and retail salespeople can do their part to help first-timers make it a successful one.

Their very first task is one of the most difficult: choosing the wallpaper pattern. Provide sample books which include an array of patterns and decorating ideas.

For a d-i-yer's first job, suggest moderately priced papers with a "short repeat." The pattern repeat is noted on the back of each sample. For example, for wallcoverings with a 6-inch repeat, a sheet of paper will

have to be moved up or down no more than 6 inches for perfect alignment.

To help figure the number of rolls needed for a room, calculate the total wall area (square footage, or the length of each wall to the nearest foot, added together, then multiplied by the ceiling height). Divide this area by the roll coverage to calculate the number ofrolls needed.

It's a good idea to have extra wallpaper for a first job in case a few misguided cuts are made.

In addition to the wallpaper, d-iyers will also need:

a drop cloth, premixed wallpaper adhesive and a brush to apply the wallcovering, or a sponge and water tray if the wallpaper is pre-pasted, plumb line to create a straight, level guide for applying the first sheet of wallpaper,

For novices, suggest

they undertake as their first wallpapering project a back bedroom where they can practice using the tools and fussing with the wallpaper.

. a smoothing brush to remove air bubbles and creases.

a seam roller to seal the edges in place,

wide blade putty knife, and household scissors, srnall pointed scissors, razor blade cutter and straight edge for trimming the paper.

For novices, suggest they undertake as their first wallpapering project a back bedroom where they can practice using the tools and fussing with the wallpaper. When they feel confident, they can hang paper in the front where everyone will see their work.

How-to clinics are a perfect venue for teaching homeowners how to wallpaper as well as instilling the confidence required to give it a try. Cover the basics, as well as finer points, such as how to fit wallpaper around window and door mouldings by cutting the overlapping edges at a 45" angle, and how to cut paper around an outlet or switch plate cover by cutting out an "x," snipping the excess "v"-shape pieces and trimming the opening-after turning off the electricity.

Union Pacific Does U-Turn

Union Pacific is reversing its move toward centralizing management and consolidating routes, directions that have exacerbated service problems throughout the West for over a year.

The railroad has been reorganized into three regions, each with its own vice president and management team.

During the 1990s, the nation's largest railroad has been relocating operating managers and train dispatchers to its rail headquarters in Omaha, Ne., using technology to link with field operations. But, in light of continuing problems from last year's acquisition of Southern Pacific, "the railroad is too large to operate from one location," admitted a UP spokesperson.

Since the merger, UP also had been selling off track and consolidating track, creating bottlenecks. As a result, the railroad agreed to buy back over 100 miles of track and retain hundreds of miles of track marked for abandonment.

The company also is considering mothballing instead of abandoning the "Modoc Line," which links southern Oregon and western Nevada providing a shortcut for forest products shipped east.

Outdoor Vendor Dogs Depot

When Home Depot relocated. its Huntington Beach, Ca., store to a new, larger location last month, one long-time draw was missingJimmy's Hot Dog Stand.

Sylvester San Miguel had operated the popular food stand outside the store for seven years, but six months ago learned he would not be allowed to move along with the home center.

The school district, which owns the new property, won't allow restaurant-type uses, afraid of loitering by

"I don't know if they're going into meltdown again, like they did last summer, but things are getting worse."

- Edward Emmett, National Indus trial Trans p o rtation League president, on Union Pacific's continuing delays in the West students from an adjacent high school. San Miguel pays $750 a month to keep the stand open l0 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily, and volunteered to keep the stand closed during school hours. Depot officials are trying to find him a new location, but San Miguel

wants to stay where the customers know and appreciate him-so much so that over 5,000 of them have signed a petition beseeching Home Depot and the city to keep the stand.

Distributor Buys Neighbor

Lumber Products, Tualatin, Or., has acquired Wood Window Distributors, also of Tualatin.

Wood Window Distributors will operate as a separate division, profit center and location (even though it is located across the street from Lumber Products' corporate campus), with the same management, sales, technical, administrative and support staff.

Lumber Products now operates nine full service distribution centers, including four in Oregon, three in Washington, one in Idaho and one in Utah, plus Components & Millwork Inc., a Tualatin manufacturing/milling operation.

Ace Opens West's First Corporate Stores

By the end of this month, Ace Hardware will open its first corporateowned store in the West, a slick, 17,000-sq. ft. unit in Renton, Wa.

By year's end, two more will open in the Seattle area, and eventually up to 12 locally, plugging "holes in the market."

It's no coincidence that the stores are opening in the hometown of Eagle Hardware & Garden; the first cluster of three corporate stores opened recently in Chicago, home territory for Ace and rival TruServ, while the second set of four is near Atlanta, base for Home Depot.

Storage

They're part of Ace's aggressive plan, "The New Age of Ace," aiming to increase the co-op's retail sales from last year's $12 billion to $16 billion by 2000.

The new corporate stores are similar to an independently owned Ace hardware store, ranging in size from 8,000 to 20,000 sq. ft. Yet, each will stock about 35Vo more inventory per foot than the current stores and feature a large customer service booth.

The new stores should help not harm business for independent Ace dealers, stresses Brett Stephenson, regional manager for the corporate stores division's western region, based near Colorado Springs, Co.

He says that the corporate stores are an Ace division, so every Ace owner essentially holds a stake in them. And, all of the corporate stores will eventually be put up for sale, "after they get up and running."

Explains Stephenson: "What we're all trying to do is support our retailers and increase our market share."

Having seen most of the other local independents forced out of business by the big boxes, Don Wolffe, owner of Seattle Ace dealer Crawford-Waage Hardware, agrees with Ace's strategy. "I think they're trying to prove a point," he says. Ace wants to "show it can be done,"

Like Wolffe, the corporate stores will stress convenience-getting shoppers in and out as quickly as possible. An employee will be stationed at the front door to greet customers and lead them to what they need. That, Ace figures, should be easier in their 17,000-sq. ft. stores than in a 100,000-sq. ft. warehouse home center.

New Name For Panel Group

Aiming for a clearer, more accurate image, the PB-MDF Institute has a new name-the Composite Wood Council.

The lO-year-old group will continue to focus on particleboard and medium density fiberboard products, but wanted to get closer to the audiences for the council's communciations programs and better reflect the current and prospective membership, including the merged Composite Panel Association.

Fighting Employee Turnover

One downside to the strong economy for U.S. retailen is high turnover among store associates, the worst in 25 years, according to MOHR Retail Learning Systems.

"There are no quick fixes for high

turnover," says MOHR's Herb Cohen. "Training helps and so do incentives. But the best place to start is recruitment and selection. Because the job market is so competitive, many retailers find themselves settling for whomever they can get, even though

*$ffi!E.

these may be the individuals least likely to stick with the job."

He says most important is the attitude of top management. "Unfortunately, they've considered associates as a disposable commodity seldom worth training and peripheral to creating the shoppi.ng experience. What top management needs to keep in mind is that without employee satisfaction, it's impossible to have customer satisfaction."

Management should find ways to make associates feel competent and then regularly reinforce that confidence, he suggests.

Warehouse

Roof Caves In

A forklift driver accidentally struck a vertical beam inside a lumber warehouse at Ganahl Lumber Co., Anaheim, Ca., causing the roof to partially collapse.

The July 3l collapse caused about $100,000 in damage, rupturing pipes and the sprinkler system and spreading debris over a wide area.

No one was injured; the man was alone in the warehouse and ran for safety after hitting the beam and hearing it crack.

Huge Lowe's DC Planned

Lowe's Cos., the nation's second largest home improvement retailer, has been actively site seeking in Southern California and Nevada for their planned distribution center.

The latest concept calls for a 100acre site and a building or buildings from 800,000 to 1.2 million sq. ft. The DC will support the approximately 100 retail stores the company plans to build in the West. Lowe's Cos. is based in North Wilkesboro, N.C.

Local press reports indicate initial interest in the Inland Empire area some 60 miles east of Los Angeles. Other possible area venues are Lancaster and Palmdale, as well as the High Desert. At this time, situating the DC in Nevada has not been ruled out. Nevada warehousing laws could have positive tax implications for the deal.

A final decision could be announced this month.

Particleboard RVs Hit The Road

Raven Panel Sales and ProBoard Ltd., two Canadian cos., have jointly created a new particleboard product for use in recreational vehicles.

The new board is made on an 8'wide Mende production line that produces a continugus thin particleboard, suitable for virtbally any RV length. "The new board provides a smooth, consistent platform for the fiberglass,"

says Raven pres. Lance Davidson. "Since it's one continuous ribbon of board on the body of the vehicle, there are no vertical seam lines."

"Currently, most 40' RV units are made by gluing together a series of 4'x8' lauan plywood boards," explains Davidson. "This is not only time consuming, but each seam or joint telegraphs through the fiberglass exterior when the sun shines on it."

WAKEUP,AMERICA!

We recently watched our toughest competitor for 63 years (Riverside County Lumber) close his doors. A few months back we lost our second toughest competitor (Suverkrup Lumber), who left the lumberbusiness after lll years.

These two stores were full service, high quality, extremely competitive and highly knowledgeable. I personally competed with them, and, believe me, they were tough.

I've tried to figure out how box stores can survive under circumstances such as we have with zero rent. zero debt and service. Being a member of Do it Best with 5,500 store buying power, total average wage at $9.32 an hour, property taxes based on many decades back, with a profit picture of less than ll2 of l7o. Something's wrong with this picture.

Cities across the nation are giving hundreds of thousands of dollars up front to box stores. This is why towns become blighted, needing re-development. You cannot re-develop a town that has been cannibalized by box stores. If you don't believe it, just wait until it comes to your town. Don't blame the box stores for ripping the price structure to pieces. You have to look to those in power in your city that gives them building permits and all the freebies.

Put the blame where it belongs.

Extensive Expo Expansion

Home Depot plans to expand its upscale Expo division from six stores to about 200 over the next six to seven years.

The rollout will begin gradually, with two Expo Design Centers to open late this year and eight more in 1999.

Next year Expos will open in Houston, Tx.; Smithtown, N.Y.; Fairfax, Va.; Marietta, Ga.; Monrovia and Huntington Beach, Ca., in the former site of a just-relocated Home Depot. Two other sites for 1999 are yet to be announced.

The first Expo Design Center opened in San Diego, Ca., in 1991.

"By the ume we opened our sixth store in Davie (Fl.) last April, we had refined the concept to the point that we are now ready to begin a more aggressive expansion program," said Bryant Scott, president of the Expo division.

So far this year, the division has enjoyed the highest comparable store sales performance among Home Depot's divisions. "The stores are creating high levels of customer satisfaction due to a focused mix of prod-
