WAKEUP,AMERICA!

We recently watched our toughest competitor for 63 years (Riverside County Lumber) close his doors. A few months back we lost our second toughest competitor (Suverkrup Lumber), who left the lumberbusiness after lll years.

These two stores were full service, high quality, extremely competitive and highly knowledgeable. I personally competed with them, and, believe me, they were tough.

I've tried to figure out how box stores can survive under circumstances such as we have with zero rent. zero debt and service. Being a member of Do it Best with 5,500 store buying power, total average wage at $9.32 an hour, property taxes based on many decades back, with a profit picture of less than ll2 of l7o. Something's wrong with this picture.

Cities across the nation are giving hundreds of thousands of dollars up front to box stores. This is why towns become blighted, needing re-development. You cannot re-develop a town that has been cannibalized by box stores. If you don't believe it, just wait until it comes to your town. Don't blame the box stores for ripping the price structure to pieces. You have to look to those in power in your city that gives them building permits and all the freebies.

Put the blame where it belongs.
