Because of the seriousness of the proposed Redwood Nationol Park expansion, we are reprinting Al
Kerper's letter to the Secretary of the Interior. Al l.r a lumberman, employed by Dorris Lumber and Millwork, Sacramento, Ca., and a frequent contributor to The Merchant Magazine. - ed.
REDWOOD PARK "BOONDOGGLE''
Honorable Cecil Andrews Secretary of the Interior Interior Bldg. Washington, D.C.20240
Dear Secretary Andrews:
This supplements my mailgram of May 13, 1977 in behalf of Hoo-Hoo International. a fraternal order of 7500 plus lumbermen in the United States, filing a protest of HR 3813, acquisition of an additional 48,000 acres of Redwood forests to Redwood National Park.
This letter is a personal Protest as a visitor and tourist to the redwood region, visiting the redwood area one or more times each year for the past I 7 years.
First, I am pleased to enclose an editorial by the Record-Searchlight of Redding, Ca. which states absolute facts as they exist. The editorial indicates that no expenditures were made since 1966 for improvements or visitor facilities and that this is not a park but a preserve.
As a tourist I have located onlY one road leading off of HwY. l0l. There are a number of trails and most are well maintained but little used. Hwy. l0l has numerous roadside turn-outs; tourists do stop here, view the trees, take pictures, etc.
Camping facilities in the area are limited and almost unobtainable during the summer season.
It is stated by the Assistant Secretary that the proposal to expand the park is to protect valuable resources; that the present Park has been damaged by land use practices and more damage will result from further harvesting. By whom and when were such studies documented?
I have traveled the eastern boundary of Prairie Creek State Park via Ah Pah and East Ridge Road (accessible only by four-wheeled vehicle) and could notice no damage whatever to park lands by harvesting.
Also, just how will (or can) Park expansion provide a more usable visitor base? Sure, more camPsites would be a welcome addition.
If only an unbiased, maybe nonpolitical, study were made Ithe] findings would be that the expansion is "A Gigantic Boondoggle".
Sincerely yours,
A. L. Kerper 3893 Golf Dr. Redding, CA. 96001
