Mr. yard foreman asked if John had ever operated a lift truck. The response was no. Nothing to it, I'11 show you. Turn on the key, starter is here, gear shift is here, usual forward, reverse, etc., over here is the fork lift lever, here the boom tilt. Just be sure your load is balanced." were the instructions from the yard foreman.
"Take the truck to the rear of the yard and restack those 4x4x16 and those 2x6's."
John had not worked in a lumber yard before so the language was strange. The foreman left for other parts of the yard and John climbed aboard the lift truck. After five minutes he found the right combination of gears, clutches and levers to get the lift truck moving. He attempted to move a unit of unbanded 2x4 and managed to dump them helter skelter, in the process he knocked over another unit of 2x6's, took off about l0 pounds of plaster from a unit of drywall and ran the forks into the door of the yard pick up truck.
"You dumb - - -! You hippy kids can't do an1 thing right. In five minutes you can screw up more than three of us can put together in a week. I don't have time to play games with you guys. Stack this lumber back the way it was."
John stacked the lumber back by hand and by 5:00 had finished placing every piece back in better order than he found it. At 5:00 George happened to see John and continued the harrassment about his stupidity.
At 8:00 the next morning John was not there. He didn't even bother to come by forhis paycheck. The yard foreman commented to the boss that these young kids can't take a days work. Too rough on them. They have no intelligence and can't do anything right. That is the fourth one of those dummies welve had this month.
Comment: What is wrong with showing the new employee a little courtesy, after all you want him on the team. Introduce him to other employees, have him read the company operating and safety policies. Take time to give him the basics in training. - Maybe he will like working for you.
