Another Slice Off the Salami

ANE OF THE WAYS every citizen of this Vcountry has lost rights "guaranteed" to us by the United States Constitution is in small slices, for ostensibly good reasons. Loss of personal privacy and the absolute sanctity of a man's home have been compromised by court rulings allowing the government to violate these "guarantees" for, variously, what is called national security, catching drug offenders and welfare cheaters. Without arguing the merits or demerits involved, the bottom line is fewer rights for every citizen.

The horrible thing about these losses is that they occur so subtlely and in such thin slices that it is never enough to arouse the citizenry. So the police break into a home and catch a welfare cheater, so what? Few realize that legalizing that entitles the police to break into your home for (supposedly) the same or similar reasons. Such a thing would have been absolutely illegal a few years ago. But those rulings have passed into law with few public ripples.

Another such loss appears imminent and again, the public could care less. A little known provision of H.R. 8641, Rep. Phillip Burton's bill to expand Redwood National Park, contains a provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior absolute authority to regulate all land use in the park's watershed, "without any regard to any provision of any law, or any standard of conduct." It would allow the Secretary to force the landowner outside park boundaries to do certain land rehabilitation, no matter what the land owner thinks, and then not pay him for it!

The unfounded, immoral land grab that the park expansion bill represents is bad enough, but this astounding attempt to violate the public's right to the protection we should all enjoy from the constitution is the most outrageous insult yet.

But does the public know or care? Have you protested? Will this bill roll along unchallenged until it becomes law? Will another slice off the salami of citizen rights be cut without even a whimper by the public?

Tune in next year, Freedom Fans, to find out the results. If the government hasn't confiscated vour radios. that is.
