FOUR SHIPS are seen unloading at the hub of Hammond's distribution operations at the Terminal lsland yard, L.A. harbor. lt covered 39 acres; including a 1300 ft long water dock; stored up to 25 million feet of lumber; and had a complete remanufacturing mill. 0rders were assembled for Hammond retail yards and tract jobs, including one tract iob in 1951 to which they sent 1,214,000 bf in one day.
ALAMEDA ST. yard, which covered 28 acres in Los Angeles, stocked kd Douglas fir, redwood, Ponderosa pine and had a sash and door plant plus a massive warehouse of builder's hardware. Roofing, wallboard and plywood were also inventoried. A complete hardwood operation was incorporated in 1923. Men on bikes carried orders to far corners of the complex.
HUGE Samoa, Ca., mill, complete with company town and A. B. Hammond's private home on the bluff above the yard, is now part of Louisiana-Pacific's holdings.
