Joseph Copeland
Joseph W. Copeland, founder of one of the country's largest familyowned lumber-yard chains, died Feb. 3, Portland, Or. He was 91.
He was born in Sumner, Iowa, Aug. 31, 1886. He moved to Portland in l9l2 and was a resident at his death.
Mr. Copeland acquired a small lumber yard in the Lents district of Portland for $10,000. In 1976, the Copeland Lumber Yards had sales of more than $40 million.
The company, under his guidance, grew to include 83 lumber yards in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California and Nevada.
ln 1973, he retired as president. His daughter, Helen Jo Whitsell, took over as president.
Mr. Copeland was president of the Western Retail Lumber Dealers Association in 1950 and had served as director of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association.
He was a lifetime trustee of Lewis and Clark College and a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Arlington Club.
Mr. Copeland is survived by his widow, Helen; a daughter; and two grandchildren.
Hal Henry Baly
Hal Henry Baly, 63, born November 12, l9l4 in San Pedro. Ca.. died January 17, n San Mateo, Ca. He was the son of the late Henrv Wm. "Hal" Baly, a California lumberman for 75 years. (see The Merchant Aug.'74,p.52).
Mr. Baly went to sea as a young lad on the lumber vessels of Nelson Steamship Co.
ln 1934, after attending Occiden- tal College, Eagle Rock, Ca., he joined his father in business in their own yards in Van Nuys and San Fernando, Ca. He worked with his father, except for service during War II, until 1954. "Hal H." then moved his familv to Connecticut, where he owned and operated the Baldwin Yacht Basin at Old Saybrook. ln 1972 he and his wife returned to California, this time to San Mateo. to be near his elderly father and to join his brother-in-law. Ed Hasenyager, in the Colonial Lumber Co. Both Hal's sons are also in the company.
Last August a family reunion of 30 cousins was held and at that eathering were eight first and re.o-nd cousins active in the lumber business ranging in ages from 24-65. Hal's first cousin, Jerry Knight, is the owner of the San Fernando
Lumber Co.
Hal H. Baly widow, Margaret James Wm. and sister, Frances and brother-in-law is survived by his Moor; his sons, Robert Moor; his Baly Hasenyager, , Ed. Hasenyager.
John Henry Eckstein, sales manager of the hardwood div., American Forest Products, Cerritos, Ca., died January 30, 1978. He was 52.
Born January 20, 1926, in Webster City, Ia., he attended grade and high schools there, later graduating from Iowa State College with a B.S. degree in Forestry. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He left the Ivory Pine Co., Dinuba, Ca., (now part of Sequoia Forest Industries) in 1959 aflcr nine years with the company to join the Mt. Whitney Div. of Tarter, Webster & Johnson (now AFP) at Johnsondale, Ca. In 1963 he joined TW&J's hardwood div., where he rose to sales manager.
Mr. Eckstein is survived bv his widow, Earleen; father; motherj four sons; and two grandchildren.
