Fir Door Line

A new Energy-Guard fir door line that features tempered insulated glass, and thicker raised wood panels as standard features has been introduced by the Nicolai Company.

The panels have added insulation and security values because they are over 100 per cent thicker than present industry standard, the company claims. The line includes: 5001 onelite French rim door, 5031 Crossbuck, 5570 onelite and 557 I one-lite, and the 5118, 5144 an<] 5182 Sash ooors.

Use of manufactured fireplaces has increased strongly among builders and homeowners in both new home construction and remodelings as the popularity of fireplaces has grown, says Heatilator Fireplace, pioneer in heat circulating fireplaces.

It said some 80% of fireplaces used in remodeling jobs and 60% used in new construction now are manufactured. The percent of homes with one or more fireplaces has increased from about 35% rn 1970 to 65';/,' in 1977 lleatilator's newest fireplace, the Model 3138, offers a deluxe combination of heat circulating, zero clearance, and glass door features.

Anti-Telescoping Device

Logan Co. has an Anti-Telescoping Device to prevent the bar channel frames of wire partition panels from mis-aligning or sliding past one another during erection. It consists of extruded aluminum sections that conform to the interior contours of the oPposing channels.

Placed at a point close to where the two channels are bolted together, the forked legs of the A-T-D lock the opposing channels in true alignment, and keep them from moving or slipping. This gives maximum strength and rigidity to the entire partition, the company claims.

Insulation Testing

The U.S. Testing Company is marketing a new test apparatus for measuring flammability of attic floor insulation.

It measures critical radiant flux at flame-out according to NBS proposed revisions to federal fire test procedures for blanket, batt, and loose-fill exposed attic floor insulation.

Its basic elements include: ( I ) a fire test chamber with asbestos fiberboard outer walls and heatresistant glass viewing windows; (2) an air/gas-fueled radiant heat energy panel (with self-contained pre-mix blower) mounted at a 30o angle of test; (3) a horizontal, stainless steel specimen tray that slides in and out of the chamber; (4) a dummy specimen for chamber calibration; (5) a water-cooled heat flux transducer for obtaining the heat energy flux profile of the test specimen; and (6) a propane ignition source. Gas safety features are included.

Polymeric Conditioners

Poly-Carb has three two-part thermoplastic polymers which reportedly can be applied for about one quarter the cost of conventional "waterproofing" treatments.

Mark-I21 and Mark-122 are intended for application on cured concrete for deep penetrations. A related product, Poly-Carb Mark-l23, is a specially formulated system designed to aid the curing of freshly placed concrete as well as to seal and to weatherproof it.

They reportedly totally seal surface pores. Because of the extremely low viscosity and low surface tension of these compounds at the time of application, they literally soak into and thoroughly coat and seal the microscopic pores at the surface of the concrete. After fina.l curing, the complete surface integrity of the coating acts to increase the tensile strength of the concrete's surface layer approximately 100%. By contrast, conventional soft skin coatings do not have this strengthening capability.

Solar Control Films

Martin Processing has a low cost method of energy conservation for homes and industrial properties.

The proprietary product is a specially treated, reflective polyester Llumar film applied to windows, which blocks up to 1O% of the sun's heat from the building in summer, keeping the interior cooler. The filnr also improves heat retention by 8% in winter.

According to the company, solar control films are the only current practical method of retrofitting an existing building and represent a low cost solution to the problenr of energy leakage through window glass.

Not recommended for redwood outdoors are latex primer, "shake and shingJe" type paints, and oil treatments, including boiled linseed oil. Clear film varnishes and synthetic resins should also be avoided on redwood as they can yellow, crack or peel within a year of application.

Some sidings come from CRA mills pretreated with water repellent, prefinished with stains or preprimed with paint. Carefully controlled factory conditions make mill applications cheaper and better than field applications. Factory-coated sidings, packaged for best protection and easy handling and storage, can be installed in bad weather with minimum finish problems later.

Redwood indoors can be coated with clear sealers, stain waxes, light- ly pigmented stains, or no finish at all. In kitchens and bathrooms, four to five coats of clear flat or staintextured polyurethane or alkyd resin varnish will withstand hard scrubbing or waterspots. Away from direct water or grease drips, clear polyurethane or alkyd resin sealers can be used.

Maintaining Finishes

Most can be washed with water, or mild detergent and water. To remove mildew, redwood can be scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush and a mixture of one cup trisodium phos- phate, one cup liquid household bleach and one gallon of warm water, then rinsed thoroughly. Mildewcide should be added to subsequent coatings.

Redwood's colors can be freshened by scrubbing with a solution of one cup trisodium phosphate per gallon of water. To restore redwood's cinnamon tones, this solution can be followed with application of four ounces of exalic acid crystals dissolved in one gallon of warm water, always in a non-metallic container.
