A Square of Light
Hubbell Lighting's versatile new Magnusquare system is an entirely new approach to outdoor lighting. The square of light can be used singly, in pairs, or in any number to form various configurations.
Magnusquare can be mounted on almost any flat surface for direct lighting, while several Magnusquares can be joined together atop poles for effective general area lighting.
The Magnusquare housing is formed of rugged aluminum sheet and fully gasketed to resist warpage and withstand the elements; its ballast compartment is separated from the optical compartment, thereby resulting in cool operation and longer component life; and its specially-patterned prismatic lens works equally well for direct and general illumination.

Solar Operated Roof Vent
A new solar-operated moisture/ vapor roof vent that helps prevent blistering, cracking and premature failure of roofing systems caused by sealed-in moistureladen air has been introduced by Johns-Manville.
The patented FP-10 one-way roof vent can be installed in new or existing built-up roofing systems and is designed to release moisture and prohibit its re-entry in all types of roof decks, roof insulation and roofing membranes. The vent is particularly useful in buildings where moisture, emanating from humidity within the structure, may enter the roofing sys-

tem because of a faulty vapor barrier or the lack of one.
The venting unit is actuated when heat of the sun on the roof causes trapped moistureladen air to expand. This action opens the vent's one-way valve, releasing the moisture into the atmosphere. When the roof cools, the valve closes, sealing the roof against the re-entry of damp air. The valve also prevents the admission of snow and wind-blown rain and will block water entrance even if submerged.
The roof vent consists of a one piece roof deck flange and body and a weatherproof cap made of durable, damage-resistant black polyethylene; and a silicone rubber one-way valve that has an operating temperature range of -65oF. to 450oF. The deck tlange measures 10" in diameter, while the body has a base diameter of 4Yz" and a heieht of 6"
Wood Saves the Budget
Four of the seven fioors ot tne $6.7 million Terman Engineering Center at Stanford University in California are framed of wood and have a lanrinated wood decking. The early design called for a reinforced concrete or steel structure.
Because of increased steel costs the structural concept was changed to wood framing.
Constructed in an L-shape, the building has a 240' x 115' ft main wing with a concrete block center section of 103.5' x 60' bracketed by wood frame office tiers and a 186'x 46' wing. The latter wing is framed entirely with laminated beams.
The laminated wood decking is 3" decorative STX Lock Deck, a product of Potlatch Corp. The structure required approximately 90,000 sq. ft. of the laminated decking. Topped with l/2" plywood and 1-1 12" of foamed lightweight concrete for flooring, the decking is ieft exposed on the ceiling sid e.
Use of plywood provides extra diaphragm strength in the seismic design while the concrete imparts additional sound deadening properties. The building is scheduled for an April 1977 completion.

Energy Saving Skylight
Panelux Skylight, a translucent sandwich-construction unit for skvlighting and sidewall glazing, is dLsigned to save energy in two important ways: (1) it reduces the need for artificial illumination; and (2) the laminated construction. which traps air between the surface skins. effeitively insulates against heat loss or solar heat gain. It has excellent light transmitting qualities and better diffusion than glass or acrylic.
It is fabricated of fiberglass-rein- forced acrylic polyester skin laminated to a non-conductive, nonmetallic fiberboard core. Wiih this construction, the Skylight will never form frost or condensation on the inside of the panel even in the most severe conditions.
The design provides optimum load bearing strength, impact resistance, and is lightweight for ease of installation. The top surface incorporates a weathercoat to assure maximum longevity.
Integral fiberglass perimeter curb flashing allows for a completely flat top surface. With no perimeter lip or joints the Skylight is watertight without sealant.
Single Panelux Skylight units are available in maximum dimensions of 5' 6" x 25' long. For large area multiple-pane installations, aluminum jointing accessories are available.
The face skins may be clear, white, or one of the standard Cemcel tints. The grid core shows a dark line pattern, with a variety of patterns also available.

Redwood Million Foot Club
Simpson Timber Co., one of the foremost producers of redwood, has honored Capital Lumber Co., headquartered in Phoenix, for realizing sales of more than a million feet of Simpson redwood lumber in 1976.

According to George Kreiss, Simpson field lumber manager, "This award recognizes an outstanding effort by a major distributor in the Arizona and New Mexico marketing areas. We believe that redwood is a superior building product derived from one of nature's most renewable resources, but it could not reach the end use customer without the work of such men as John Gaskin of Capital Lumber and his staff."
Engraved on the plaque is the inscription: "In distinguished recogni' tion of the achievement of exceeding one million feet of Simpson redwood sales in one year. l976."Capital Lumber's new facilities at Albuquerque, New Mexico, received a permanent redwood plaque commemorating the outstanding sales performance, and each individual in the firm contributing to the achievement of the million foot result was presented with a personal award.
