Q ove 65 of our young group \, (2nd Growth) gathered for cocktails and dinner Feb.l0 at the City of Commerce Hyatt House.
New officers were elected: Pete Ganahl, Ganahl Lumber Co., Anaheim, is the new president, Bob Book, Weyerhaueser Co., Sepulveda, is v.p.; Randy Port, Chandler Lumber Co., Van Nuys, treasurer.
The new addition to the officer corp was Cindi Ledesma, All Coast spections without warrants remain legal in all states except ldaho. The ldaho court ruling to block OSHA surprise inspections without a warrant is expected to be acted upon eventually by the U. S. Forest Products, elected secretary. Jack Berutich, American Forest Products, was the retiring president.
John Kelly, v.p., Wood Markets Inc., Arcata, Ca., and chairman of the American Lumber Standards Committee, was the speaker for the evening. John had his usual entertaining manner about him and gave the group some insight into lumber distribution as it was and what it might be in the future.
One thing that will have a definite effect on the market place is the present water shortage in Northern California.
Some 120 were in attendance at the 8th Young Westerners Conference in Seattle, Jan. 14-16. The agenda consisted of a wide spectrum of programs tailored to the needs of young industry employees.
Yours truly began the Conference with a talk titled, "WBMA-Its Future, and What Your Association Can Mean to You."
An impressive program by Dick Anderson, American Plywood Assn., and Don Comstock. Western Wood Products Assn., stressed the various uses of lumber and plywood as well as technical knowledge of these two products.
Larry Knudsen, president of Lumbermen's of Washington, and I held a panel on motivation, career planning and personal development, stressing the importance of hard work, honesty and constant education in order to be successful.
A four-hour session on accounting was conducted by the CPA firm Vander Wegen & Kincaid covering financial statements, case histories of business failures and successes and round table problem solving.
Conclusion of the conference featured a seminar on advertising from the dealer's point of view bY Keith Kincaid, advertising manager of Lumbermen's of Washington.
The next meeting will be in May, a dinner meeting in the L.A. Orange County area. Following that, the Second Annual Weekend Seminar will be held. The location this year is the Erawan Gardens Hotel, Palm Desert, June 10 - 12.
Lots of new faces were present at the Hyatt House meeting. This indicates an expanding interest in a very viable group. If you have persons under 35 in your operation, look into tl'e 2nd Growth. It's a great way to assist their growth with the industry.

New RIS President
Jim Perry, manager of Simpson Timber Co.'s Northern California redwood lumber operations, has been elected president of the Redwood Inspection Service for 1977. He succeeds Douglas W. Clayton, general manager of Cal-Pacific Manufacturing Co., Arcata, Ca.

Perry worked for Hammond Lumber Co., and Rockport Redwood Co. before joining Simpson in 1951.
The board of directors also elected Harvey M. Carroll, Jr., v.p. He is manager of Schmidbauer Lumber Co. in Eureka, Ca. Peter Johnson, Jr., named general manager-secretary in July, was elected to that position and Helen McDonald was re-elected treasurer.
RIS establishes uniform redwood lumber grades according to Department of Commerce Standards, and supervises annually the grading of more than a billion board feet of redwood and other western species at 33 member company operations.
NAWLA Set for 85th Annual
The 85th annual meeting of North American Wholesale Lumber Association will be held at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, April 12-16 : convention emphasis will be on "The Future, Your Business. and You."
There will be three full days of business sessions. A special sales management seminar on Saturday, April l6th. will be conducted for owners and sales managers.
One session will highlight Leo Mc Manus of L. F. McManus Co., Inc. who was the outstanding hit of last year's Broadmoor meeting, and he is back bY popular demand. This year, his subject will be "Can You ldentify the Type of Person With Whom You are Dealing?"
On Friday, lumbermen will hear Charles C. Shinn, Jr., a professor at the University of Denver in the field of Real Estate and Construction. NAWLA director of sales training Sidney Edlund will conduct a seminar on Sales Management.
Shirtsleeve working sessions will involve distributors and producers as in past NAWLA meetings. Informal afternoon sessions will also be adiuncts to the overall program.
There will be the usual organized golf and tennis tournaments, a ladies' bridge party and the annual "Fun Nisht."
