Haruest Plan Memo Leaked
With release of an official timber policy plan lagging behind the prorrised June 2 date, a memo to Pres. Clinton from one of the Ecosystem Management Assessment Team scientists, claiming timber available for harvest is less than thought, was leaked to the press.
K. Norman Johnson wrote that forest plans overestimate the timber sales programs by as much as 407o. He alleged that forest plans assumed roadless and other controversial areas would be available for harvest" but in reality are not. Acres available for management are the central issue surrounding timber sale program levels. The harvest goes down proportionately with land base restrictions.
Many in the industry thought the memo was deliberately leaked as an attempt to justify the low timber sales numbers associated with options proposed by the scientific teams.
American Forest and Paper Association and other industry groups launched an editorial information program June 21, meeting with the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Washington bureaus of national news magazines, syndicated columnists and national broadcast news outlets.

Builders are buying glulams

W#Jf"J,',I ;di"Hl:lffi;
products, especially structural glued laminated timbers?
Mainly because builders are buying them, but there are other rerrons, answers the American Institute of Timber Construction, Vancouver, Wa. Laminated beams can be important, high profit products for retailers. Many dealers sell a good volume of stock laminated timbers for ridge beams, exposed raft€f,s, girder beams, hip beams, floor beams and door, window and garage headers, usually at a higher profit margin than solid lumber beams.
AITC lists nine primary reasons why specifiers prefer laminated beams and headers over solid sawn timbers, I-Joists or steel framing. They suggest dealers consider them as sales points.
Strength : predictable engineering performance with extra strength for longer spans. Conventional stick built framing, I-joists and LVL can't handle many of the complex roof angles and longer spans in today's custom homes. Heavier roof trusses require stronger headers as more building weight is transferred to perimeter walls. The extxa strength of laminated beams is valuable for "bonus rooms" over garages. Their ability to span 30 feet or more eliminates the need for posts or columns in the middle of Oe garage space. Some traditional lumber strength values for solid sawn members declined as a result of the lumber industry's in-grade testing program, giving laminated beams even more value.
Lower Gosts: builders report installed cost of laminated loqo to 20Vo less than for conventional solid sawn timbers or other engineered components with minimum waste at the job site. Long lengths and extra strength make it faster and easier for
framers without field splicing or fabrication. Laminated beams can provide long spans and carry loads that would require much larger solid sawn beams and help avoid callback complaints which occur on about 25Vo of all new construction built with green lumber floor and roof joists. These callbacks can cost up to $1,000 each to repair.
Stability: laminated timbers are manufactued with kiln dried material which doesn't warp and twist like solid lumber, particularly critical in larger roofs with more hips, donners and vaults. Laminated can be machined sraight, without the crown often found in solid sawn timbers.
Availability: in contrasr to wide width dimension lumber and timbers which are difficult to find, have a relatively high moisture content and are increasing in price, laminated beams are widely available at competitive prices.
Faster Construction: laminated beams can be installed quickly with minimum manpower and equipment. Time consuming and expensive job site buili-up beams are not engineered for most applications.
Ease of Handling: laminated arrives at the job site pre-cut and ready to go and weighs less than a built-up steel and lumber flitch plate beam. Carpentry crews can trim and fit glulam timbers at the job site, in contrast to specialized detailing and fabricating required with steel.
Appearance: with the increasing preference for open interiors, exposed ridge beams and cathedral-style ceilings, larrinated beams can be finished to provide an atEactive, custom touch and improve design appeal.
Fire Resistance: unlike unpro-
tected steel bar joists which lose strength quickly and can collapse under fire conditions, laminated timbers retain a significantly higher percentage of their original strength when exposed to fire. (See related story p. 36)
Environmental Efficiency: laminated beams come from a renewable raw material resource and require significantly less energy to produce than steel, concrete, aluminum and plastic.
AITC spokesman Don Jaenicke suggests retailers promote sales of laminated beams with in-store displays and samples for builders and highlight the beams in direct mail and newsletters to contractors. Services such as custom cutting to specified lengths, shop drawings, material take offs and erection of the beams can reinforce the concept of being a glulam specialist, he adds.

$9.7 billion potential for engineered lumber
Ouestion:
Despite issues with forests, do you still believe wood is the most viable material for future new home construction?
Response:
A LTHOUGH sales of engineered lumber prod.{aucts for residential use have increased dramatically in recent months, total industry sales, which reached $350 million m 1992, are merely a fraction of the possible market
'The full potentid for engineered lunber in North American residential construction may approach $3.7 billion in 1993," says Marv Askey, who represents Trus Joist MacMillan to home center chains.
He predicts uden for engineercd lumber will grow with increased demand fueled prinurily by the expense and inconsistercy of traditional lunbsr. "Over the long tenn, the price of dimension lumber will continue to rise while quality declines," Askey says. "Engineered lumber, on the other hand, is structurally superior to ordinry lumber and priced very competitively. Since many people aren't willing to pay a higher price, they'll likely swirch to engineered lumber."

More and more builders will seek alternatives as the supply of ordinary lumber continues to decline, Askey mainteinq. Engineered lumber is a more environmentally ftiendly solutim ban altern4tives such as rccycled steel and plastic ftaming, ooncrete, stone and briclq which have significant drawbacks including higher embodied energy requiremens.
Tbe National Academy of Science.s estimarcs that leminated \reneer lumber takes nine times less BTUs per ton to extract, process and use than does steel. Unlike these other materials, engineered lumber comes from a biodegradable, renewable nesour@, Askey points out. Furthermore, engineered wood is mce easily adapted to existing building p'ractices.
Askey believes public opinion will fuel increased demand for engineered lumber. "Despite the frct wood is becoming m increasingly more precious and mqe environmentally pressured commodity, an ovenv[slming majority of

Response:
people still consider it to be the best material for building new homes," he says.
To prove his theory, he cites a study by independent research firm Market Facts, Inc. of American's attitudes about wood use in residen'ial construction. Commissioned in March by Trus Joist MacMillan, the survey revealed 68Vo of the American public still believes wood is tle most viable material for new home construction. Wood has a long-tenn funrre in new home construction because it is a renewable resource in the opinion of 77Vo of those surveyed. In addition 767o wantthe government to support new wood product technologies to reduce lumber needed from old growth forests to build houses and 8l%o want the forest products industry to develop and promote technologies such as wood engineered from small, fast-growing trees as an aliernative to old growth forest lumber.

Engineered lumber products can meet these expectations with competitive and stable prices,
Question:
Do you agree that wood products have a long-term future in new home construction because wood is a renewable resource?
Response:
Ouestion:
Do you agree that the forest products industry should develop and promote new technology to utilize wood from small, fast-growing trees rather than old-growth timber?
Askey explains. "Engin@red lumber isn't subject to as great price swings as dimension lumber. Ordinary framing materials must rely on currently uncer0ain supplies of large, old-growth logs, but engineered lumber can use readily available, strrdl-diameter logs.
The installed price of engineered lumber is slightly higher per square foot than that of the solid-sawn lumber it replaces, but Askey says unique benefits more than compensate for this. Unlike regular lumber, engineered lumber has most of the moisnre removed during the manufacturing process, so it won't change shape before or aft€r it is installed. This eliminates customer callbacks. Some engineered lumber manufacturers grxuztntee their product against defects for the life of the home.
In addition, engineered lumber, typically half the weight of solid sawn, is easier to install and helps to reduce injuries caused by working with heavier, dimension lumber. While as much as llVo of traditional lumber might not be used at a job site, waste with engineered lumber, which is manufactured to strict quality criteria, is usually less than l%o, typicaTly the result of saw cuts.
Engineered lumber manufacturers can contain prices by diversifying timber sources and Fansfonning previously unsuitable, low demand species such as aspen and poplar into high quality products. These fast growing, snall diameter trees provide a steady wood fiber source at a practical cost for manufacturing large dimension framing lumber, Askey emphasizes.

Treated wood's longevity adds to the bottom line
INCREASED interest in pressure ltreated wood products for deck construction is one change building product retailers can live with and benefit from. Treated products give retailers readily available, economical alternatives to offer customers - dt€rnatives that can last a lifetime.
The availability and price of cedar and redwood have played a part in the growth of treated products. Not long ago, these woods were standard for decking use, but relatively little old growth cedar and redwood is available today. New growth heartwood offers some protection from insect attack, but it is often cost prohibitive.

Treated wood can rePlace redwood and cedar for decks ways to sell confidence of long life and insect resistance.
Today's redwood buyers usually choose lower grades that contain higher anounts of sapwood with little resistance o decay and temfte asack.
Understructure materials specifred for decks also are changing. Althongh in many areas, the vast majority of decks me built on concrete pier blocks to avoid ground contact with wood, protection from decay and termite attack is still a corrcern in exterior wood construction. A transition from untreated species to pressure treated species can solve the problem.
The durability of treated wsod hns been underscored by an extensive and expanding number of county and municipal building codes requiring pressure treated wood for use in decks. Althougb building inspectors, builders and architects in arid states are less familiar with the benefits of treated wood, the Eend is becoming evident.
Product specifiers are beginning to realize that many man-created elements, such as the moisture from

Making the case for pre-stained wood siding
DRE-FIMSHED natural wood sidf ing has been around since the 1950s, touting a casebook full of benefits and advantages over unfinished materials. But it seems that the jury is still out. Today, only an estimated I 1 7o of wnod, plywood and hardboard products are sold pre-finished.
Stumbling blocks have been higher initial price, past shortcomings in quality, lack of visibility for the product and lack of availability from
retailers. But improved quality and aggressive marketing are working to change that, presenting retailers, remodelers, builders and architects with a shonger case for selecting prefinished materials.
EXIIIBIT A: PRICE.
Since pre-finishing siding necessitates additional labor and materials for the manufacturer, it will naturally reflect these costs in the selling price. In the long run, though, pre-finished materials can actually cost less. To accurately comparc pricing to site-finished products, buyers must consider the later costs associated with site-finished siding: on-site painting materials, on-site labor costs, scaffolding costs, scheduling, call-backs, spoilage, shrink lines, lap marks, streaking, overspray and clean-up costs.
EXHIBIT B: QUALITY.
Research, technicd advancements and state-of-the-art equipment have improved the quality of pre-finished products so they are actually better than site-finished products. Unlike finishing at the job site, pre-staining and pre-priming typically covers the entire wood surface, front and back. Mechanical application provides a more uniform coat, improving consistency and eliminating maintenance. Factory finishing also guards against weathering and photodegradation, increasing the longevity of the coating and the material. And quality control is typically easier and more thorough at the production site tlan at the job site.

EXHIBIT C: CONVENIENCE.
Pre-finishing means one less project for the builder or remodeler to
worry about. And one less to flrange, perfonn and pay for.
EXIIIBIT D: SELECTION.
Operators can finish a wide variety of materials, including lumber, plywood, siding, fencing, decking, trim and soffit, in a full range of widths and thiclnesses. Even the nails can be color matched and coated. An extensive selection of seni-transparent and contemponry solid colors are also available.
Story at a Glance
The verdict is out on preprimed and pre-f inished wood siding ... manufacturers expect increased appeal due to high quality, cost and time savings, guarantees.
EXIIIBITE: WARRANTY.
Extended warranties that range from 10 to 25 years, depending on the level of Oe coating, are offered on pre-finished products. For consumers, a warranty is an insurance plan. For manufacturers, it's a sEong statement of confidence in their products. For retailers, it's a wonderful selling poinr

Golumn display ideas
I\OLUMNS are in demand. They Vsell at high markups. But how can they be displayed effectively?

A remodeling and facelift designed by Tom Robinson, Robinson and Associates, Candler, N.C., added The Concept, a building produa display on the showroom floor. This two-story structur€ allows cuslomers to view, examine, touch and evaluate every product needed to build or remodel a house, irrcluding colnmns.
Generous samples of exterior items such as siding, columns, turned posts, banisters, railings and roofing used on what appears to be a two-sttry bouse are all identified. Entering througD French doors from a column-flanked porch, shoppers come into a living room showcasing hardwood flooring, millwork including a fireplace and

circular staircase, and a variety of window and door styles as well as several styles of olrrmns.
Contractors can bring or send clients to The Concept, Robinson explains. An upstairs conference room allows them a comfutable plae to review plans and discuss choices. The Terminal Building Supply saff is rained O p'tovide all infcmation necessary fc making d€cisims.

Wrm-Edge technology to cmbat drafty windows and condensation build-up is now standtrd m Manrin's entire line of wood windows and doors.
Tpically the coldest and least energy-efficient part of a window is at the edge of the glass, where temperatures can be 3" to 12" colder than at the pane's cent€r. Warm-Edge helps increase the temperature at the edge of the glass, so the window ransfers less of the outside temperature into thehome.
It utilizes a new "[,J' sha@ spacer constructed from tin-plated st€el, one of the lowest cmducting metals available. The spaoer is placed between the panes with only ore hidge where tempera$re might onduct across the space, increasing the tempefature at the edge of the glass.

f\OMPARING rhe presenr enviVronmental crisis to a religious war and apocalyptic vision, Dr. Robert G. Lee, University of Washington, challenged the American Wood Preservers' Association at its 89th annual meeting to change the industry and become more efficient in extending the life of wood. The industry must be obsessed with quality, Les D. Lonning observed in his president's report, and look for new products for the 2lst
Century, products based on technical merit witi the least risk to user and environment. We can't do business as usuel. We must extend the life of the forest, he said.
Lonning noted the addirion of 142 new members and the formation of a non-pressure committee.
Lee R. Gjovik received the award of merit for his many years of service to the association and the industrv. Now a consultant, the former U.S. Forest Products laboratory worker and
past AWPA president was called the "conscience of the association" by presenter Chuck Stoddard.
The remainder of the May 1-5 meeting at the Newpo( Beach Marriott Hotel and Tennis Club, Newport Beach, Ca., was devoted to technical sessions and committee reports.
Anders E. Lund, Anders E. Lund, Inc., was elected president; William S. McNamara, Osmose Wood Preserving, lst v.p.; Eric Yeadon, Hickson Corp., 2nd v.p.; Fred L. Omundson, Chemical Specialties, Inc., treasurer, and John F. Hall, staff executive.

Other executive committee members: Lonning, Ed H. Hildebrand, Allen M. Kenderes, Joseph R. Pate, Jr., Bobby W. Perkins, Howard T. Powell, Alan F. Preston, David A. Webb, and committee chairmen Gjovik, James L. Basler, D. Mike Dilbeck, John N. Kressbach, Jeffrey J. Monell and Alan S. Ross.

Hardwood Supply Woes
Demand is increasing and prices are soaring, but when wood products supply becomes grossly inadequate to meet demands, prosperity could turn to disaster, economist Daniel Goldy warned the Hardwood Plywood & Veneer Association (formerly Hardwood Plywood Manufacturers Association).
The long range impact of the current log shortage on hardwood plywood prices was examined by a group of 25 manufacturers and distributors with the conclusion low supply is driving up prices and many log supplies will be exhausted by fall with mill closings anticipated. Grass-roots lobbying was considered.
Various committees formed agendas and tackled "How to Explain the New Hardwood Plywood Standard to Your Customers," at the May 5-8 convention at Hilton Head. S.C.
