One of the reasons why Markus Schinhammer has produced this DVD is to pass on the standard of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu as it was passed on to me by GM Samuel Kwok and his teachers GGM Ip Chun and GGM Ip Ching. We hope that with this DVD we will be able to help all those who wish to acquire the unique legacy and the tradition of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu. Combat applications of techniques from all forms, such as from Siu Nim Tao – structure and basics, Chum Kiu – footwork, turns, combinations - Chum Kiu is the key to combat, Biu Gee – will not leave the Master's house. Two-way energy – footwork – elbows – finger techniques – makeshift techniques – most effective attack techniques, Muk Yan Chong Fut – the "wooden dummy" techniques – strength in techniques – toughening up – footwork – angle work. This works also includes excerpts from the Chi Sao programme and how to use these techniques in real combat, coupled with Fan Da techniques - effective and functional techniques with no frills. We will also discuss subjects such as simultaneity, structure, footwork, strength in techniques, plus many others, in detail. Like a key that is used to unlock a door, this DVD can be used to decrypt and demonstrate the hidden applications and the power of the Ip Man Wing Chun system.

"A nation remains strong while it looks after its real problems, and begins its decadence when it can take care of the incidental details." Arnold J. Toynbee he nation sense of a people is the result of history and the tacit agreement of the citizens around a few rules. History is fundamental in order to bring purpose and give direction to this conglomerate; it must possess a trajectory and a founding apex which at some point becomes a constitution voted by that people. Everything is somehow already invented and if we ignore history we tend to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Voting, one of the pillars of democracy (but not the only one!) cannot possibly go against these foundational acts, otherwise each generation would ignore what was learned by the previous one, thus exposing nations to constant instability. People in mass are fickle and they only go out in the street to shout "Long live...!" or "Die...!" In democracy there should be balancing mechanisms so as to minimize the consequences of those situations in which the whim and ignorance of a generation can lead the nation to the abyss. Demographic violent changes, like the ones we are starting to live in Europe, are the breeding ground of unsuspected twists in the nature of the nations that make it up. Fallaci already proclaimed at the time the dangers of Eurabia's advent, but it’s like preaching to deaf ears, because the matter doesn't seem to have an easy solution. With their morals halved and their armies softened and castrated, Europeans, facing this messy avalanche, are unable to find a coherent response to such an extreme situation. Trusting in the strength of our society and in the superiority of our principles and way of life as an effective vaccine to dilute fundamentalisms is being too optimistic... Being confident that the enemy will not come, according to Sun Tsu, is the greatest risk for a general. Lay society doesn't have the moral strength required to confront this attack, nor has it Christianity, diluted in its sins and "goodisim", especially because it has lost the force it once had on a West today pragmatic, relativistic, lazy and goody-goody. Reactions arise here and there and everywhere, but at the end you don't really know if it's better the cure or the disease; because, let’s face it, celebrating and applauding the speeches of persons like Putin or the illustrious USA President Donald Trump, who can expose a truth just as they can say the most unsustainable nonsense or even throw you a kick, depending on how they feel, doesn't seem to be the best of medicines. Reactions arise here and there and everywhere, and at the end you don't really know what is worse, the remedy or the ill, because celebrating and applauding the speeches of persons

"I am absolutely convinced that if Osama bin Laden blew Giotto's Tower or the Tower of Pisa, the opposition would blame the government." Oriana Fallaci like Putin or the illustrious President Trump, who can expose a truth just as they can say the most unsustainable nonsense or even throw a kick, depending on how they feel, doesn't seem to be the best of medicines. At least Trump lives in a democracy that has its counter-powers. Putin on his part has been a real Czar for decades rampant at will; no one can stand in his path or get him out of the way in his game of chairs from prime minister to president and then back to start all over again. Democracies, after their victory in World War II, have lived a time of success and prominence in modern history. The polarization of capitalism in the face of the systems beyond the Iron Curtain stayed the course of the West with firmness, since there's nothing like an alien bad example to accept what one has with pleasure. With the fall of the Soviet Union we were left without that mirror in which we pleasantly enjoyed looking at ourselves, and the rips in the suit began to be evident; Only China remained, but the Asian giant didn't take long to start its own way towards capitalism, certainly much wilder than any other. Beyond anecdotal examples like North Korea, the world has been singing for a few years with one voice ... but out of tune. Blocks are no longer ideological, they are returning to be, as before, much more geographic. We are all stepped on our shoe by a neighbor, or our own shoes are hurting us. The revival of populism is the only novelty... Alas, if Peron could only see! Illuminated warlords spring like mushrooms, bringing disaster to the nations as usual. Nothing like boredom brings prosperity to the people. When people ignite… bad deal! And if they find their emergent at hand, still worse. Here and there, these apprentices of Napoleon arise everywhere, but without the Emperor's genius or preparation: uncultured and illiterate, bus drivers who are enthroned as the nation's heroes, spies that thrive in the decomposition of an empire... in here you'll find whatever you need. The statesmen of old are missing in combat, and Europe, our beloved Europe, the beacon of the world, is being again kidnapped by bureaucrats and managers. To me it's OK; somehow or other, it won't last any longer than 20 or 30 years, and "Après moi... le déluge!" (After me... the Flood!) I will not be the one to raise a flag and exhaust myself in those that no longer are my battles, the latter being those of thinking right and learning more about what has a bigger projection and permanency than all the worldly things; for man is and always will be a being pursued by his own demons... Nevertheless, I must admit that, from time to time, probably as the result of reading some holiday newspapers, I still feel tempted to share these worldly reflections with you. But please don't take it amiss, it goes out fast. Well... I guess some things stay with you to the grave.

Teach your students by failing them and show them the reality of what violence really is. Teach them that there are no problems without solutions. Do so not by developing their ego and selfconfidence, or by allowing them to fall prey to their own inferiority complex from someone that sees himself as a victim by buying into silly marketing agendas like: "Don't be a victim!", or "touch me and your first lesson is free" Don't paint him a nice view of success through choreographic moves that have nothing to do with reality. He may only develop his ego and false confidence by buying into all of these egotistic slogans and end up walking around like too many do with cool T-shirts but risking his peace and life by looking for problems.

Israeli Martial Arts

Avi Nardia Here's a short story to help convey what I mean: One day a king invited two painters to paint his picture. The first completed a very realistic picture of the king seated on his chair and painted the king including his disabilities. You see the king was disabled with one blind eye, and missing one leg! The king got so mad that he sentenced the painter to prison! The second painter painted the king as he rode upon a fine horse befitting a king. The painting depicted the king only from the one side showing his remaining leg, shooting his bow as he aimed with one eye closed (yes, the blind eye!) The king was so happy that he paid him a large sum of money! This is the talent of having a 'good eye': able to see the disabilities and yet make them appear as an advantage. As a teacher I see it in many classes and work around my students' disabilities: mental physical, spiritual and help them to become stronger by paying attention to the details as we say the devil is in the details and showing them the mechanism that can work for them personally. Because behind the generic body each of us builds differently and needs different adjustments specific to each of them. This is why feedback to each student may be important and is part of the training portion that I call 'storytime.'

“Martial Arts can also be used for self-defense but the term self-defense is so complicated. What is self-defense? Defense first from ourselves.”

Some say "the sky is the limit" when what's really true is that the ground is the limit and this is why I like teach ground and BJJ and Jiujutsu whats better than be locked on ground and in corner near wall to explore - Confined place . Some time we need Risk your life to make life but training must be always safe - Today I see many Charlatans claim as formers special forces teaching un safe using load gun to teach gun disarming and Many un safe training that as former top unit in Israel I know these guys never been in any special force and maybe been soldiers but for sure never instructors as anyone that bern on service know and aware how much safety is first and last rule . INFERIORITY MARTIAL ARTS problem as Muscle dysmorphia problem some must always be sure that they have the best as part of thier inferiority syndrom Muscle dysmorphia is the obsessive preoccupation with a delusional or exaggerated belief that one's own body is too small, too skinny, insufficiently muscular, or insufficiently lean, although in most cases, the individual's build is normal or even exceptionally large and muscular already.Sometimes called "bigorexia", "megarexia", or "reverse anorexia", it is a subtype of body dysmorphic disorder We see all now are set big titles and alwasy told my students – you can set a crown on a clown its not make him a king ! Not all that dress as Grand Masters are black belts “Think outside the box” – Hanshi Patrick McCarthy Skills that were taught to me by Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. The skill I’m most grateful to Sensei for! Respect! I keep reading books and many books not just one book. There is a saying – “Beware the man of one book.” Homo unius libri, meaning “I fear the man of a single book.” I hear every day in Martial Arts the words ‘this is the BEST martial art.’ My next question is then how many Martial Arts and what kinds of experience in Martial Arts do you have? It’s typically none, meaning they’ve done only this one. Many times it’s good medicine for inferiority people to feel good with themselves as they feel they are doing the best, knowing the best.

Israeli Martial Arts I have devoted my life to Martial Arts and hold Black Belts in many different Martial Arts and I continue to explore more and more. Show me that reading just one book is as good as it gets for SelfDefense and understanding self-defense. To understand the body, the mind, the spirit we need more than one book and method. Our research and exploration leads me to creating the group study of KAPAP and Practical Martial Arts. When you’re looking into Martial Arts teachers who lead and create Martial Arts and are the most creative you’ll discover that they’ve read more than just the one book from O Sensei Gigoro Kano Oyama but they’ve read books from all of the great teachers in the past. Hanshi Patrick McCarthy knows this is the only way to gain knowledge. He’s most definitely not a one book man that think’s that one book has the answers to all in life. “Keeping an open mind is the most skill I own.” Hanshi Patrick McCarthy When we feel inferior we want to hold onto what we have or know, and we’re scared to keep walking as on the way we may see that we’re wrong or that maybe we need to study more. My advice: Don’t be an Inferiority Martial Artist, but study to be creative. As Albert Einstein

Israeli Martial Arts said “Creativity is intelligence having Fun.” Have fun in your training, don’t run around in fear. Understand the difference between Self-Defense and Fighting. Sometimes fighting comes about as a result of feeling inferior. The inferior may feel that they have something to prove. In fighting we want to confront the object we try to confront and don’t avoid the fight. We want to fight and it’s our goal to fight. In Self-Defense we try to avoid the fight doing all that we can to not be confrontational and confrontation is the last thing we want. When a solider or Police officer tries to confront a subject, his/her goal/agenda IS to confront, to fight and herein lies the problem of not understanding the difference and thinking that fighting is self-defense. In Self-Defense your goal is to avoid and escape from any and all confrontations and to save fighting as your last option. It doesn’t mean that you’re not ready to, but all of your training and education is not about your ego. It’s not about “Touch me and your first lesson is free.” as many proclaim and then state that it was self-defense. This is purely egotistical, clearly and not self-defense. There are many mistakes between what is selfdefense what is fighting. Teaching to fight is not teaching self-defense and many times it’s teaching to get into your student into problems with life and ultimately the law as well. Attitude, education and study are the most important tools to keep you away from becoming an Inferiority Martial Artist. Teaching from a love, peace and fun point of view gets you better results than teaching with fear and using a victim attitude. Teaching and studying Martial Arts have lead me to try understand the mind and spirit of myself and my surroundings. I remember talking with a Krav Maga student in one of my workshops while taking lunch and he started to talk about himself and said “I was a fat boy and all of the kids bullied me… but look at me now, I do Krav Maga now and if anyone ever touches me, I’d tell them ‘touch me and your first lesson is free.'” It got me to wondering about how extreme his inferiority complex was, and how big his ego. I said to him “have you looked in the mirror lately? You’re still out of shape

Avi Nardia and trust me you don’t want to fight. Even today your performance in Martial Arts is so bad. Now forget the past, you are over 35 and who would want to bully you at all? Just enjoy life.” This scenario stayed in my head as I saw more and more students from ‘real street self-defense’ courses and saw how theses courses were lead by bully teachers using ego slogans like ‘touch me and first lesson free.’ It worried me that if someone really touched them it might be their last lesson. They would kill themselves with their self-illusions. Martial Arts are about love and peace, and being yourself, free of ego, smiling more

and enjoying life, as life is Martial Art. If you take only one part of life you don’t get the whole of it, it’s the same as if you took only sport or combatives from the Martial Arts — you didn’t take the whole thing, even though you could see the mountain of Martial Arts. Over the years I have started to call these Martial Arts ‘Inferiority Martial Arts – I.M.A. They always need to challenge others, to show off, show how strong they are and critique all Martial Arts. “You don’t want to fight on the ground?” Who wants to fight at all? Who wants to fight with or against a knife? For the same reasons that we study blades, we study the ground. Martial

Israeli Martial Arts “Be a good Martial Artist and carry a sharp axe. Train yourself in mobility and stamina and all, then you will be ready when there’s a need to cut down a tree, and it’ll be easier, but if you try to cut the tree with no preparation, it may not work.”

Avi Nardia “To understand the body, the mind, the spirit we need more than one book and method.”

Arts, like many things need to be practical. If you have nice chair but can’t sit on it, it’s lost its target audience. Martial Arts can also be used for self-defense but the term self-defense is so complicated. What is self-defense? Defense first from ourselves. Lots of Martial Arts teachers target vulnerable people with their video-clips and advertise “don’t be a victim.” Once you’ve answered their ad and joined these classes, you have defined yourself as a victim! While talking with a friend, he’d said that Brazilian Ju-Jitsu was his therapy. It relieved his stress and made him feel so great after training, and also benefited him with great conditioning, strong stomach muscles and body, and provided skills useful for self-defense. An inferiority complex is a lack of self-worth, a doubt and uncertainty, and feelings of not measuring up to society’s standards. It is often subconscious, and is thought to drive afflicted individuals to overcompensate, resulting either in spectacular achievement or extreme asocial behavior. The term was coined to indicate a lack of covert self-esteem. For many, it is developed through a combination of genetic personality characteristics and personal experiences. Classical Adlerian psychology makes a distinction between primary and secondary inferiority feelings. · A primary inferiority feeling is said to be rooted in the young child’s original experience of weakness, helplessness and dependency. It can then be intensified by comparisons to siblings, romantic partners, and adults. · A secondary inferiority feeling relates to an adult’s experience of being unable to reach a subconscious, fictional final goal of subjective security and success to compensate for the inferiority feelings. The perceived distance from that goal would lead to a negative/depressed feeling that could then prompt the recall of the original inferiority feeling; this composite of inferiority feelings could be experienced as overwhelming. The goal invented to relieve the original, primary feeling of inferiority which actually causes the secondary feeling of inferiority is the “catch-22” of this dilemma.] This vicious cycle is common in neurotic lifestyles.

Israeli Martial Arts Feeling inferior is often viewed as being inferior to another person, but this is not always the case in the Adlerian view. One often feels incompetent to perform a task, such as a test in school. So what makes students into Inferiority Martial Artists? Mostly it’s inferiority instructors (they can’t be called teachers) that are overloaded with Ego, that use ego-laden video clips and an egotistical attitude to attract his students and ‘convinces’ them to ‘don’t be a victim’,’Train with me, it’s the navy seal real deal’, ‘I’m the real deal.’ What is ‘the real deal’ at all, as we’re all real aren’t we? These people give themselves grandiose titles and I see guys that have been kicked out of Karate, Arnis, or some Martial Artist programs in Israel. Now they are ‘GrandMaster of Krav Maga!’ It’s a good sale, and he is suddenly more true, more tactical, more Rambo or military, and so on to attract these students. My question: Why does anyone want to dress-up with an Army-style uniform for 2 hours and train in a mid-city mall and then drive back home? If you want to join the REAL Army, the Army is there, as is the Navy Seal program or Real Special Forces programs, unless you can’t get in and it’s your inferiority style.

Avi Nardia “Storms make trees take deeper roots. All these lessons make me stronger!”

Many of these will claim Judo is a sport like Aikido and will not work, Karate is old and so on. If you think Aikido doesn’t work, that’s because you’re either looking for a quick fix or too lazy to dedicate your time to train and understand the art. Study Martial Arts and perform Martial Arts. I wonder why the current market is so loaded with people that haven’t even earned their black belts in any style like those in Krav Maga that claim to be Grand Masters! Remember this: “It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles.” Niccolo Machiavelli First be a good human. Keep your integrity. Having the title of being a good father is more important than showing off all of your other titles. “If you don’t know the difference between what you’re doing and what you should be doing you’re destined to fail.” – Niccolo Machiavelli, “The Prince” One of my friends complained today about how Integrity is missing in the Martial Arts, and that many teachers SELL certificates. I told him its more interesting how many people will actually BUY those ‘certificates’ as they know there’s no integrity in buying them! The Paradox is easy: with no ‘integrity students’ how can you find ‘integrity teachers?’ When integrity students are rare you will find only a small handful of teachers with integrity. So who need’s to feel the shame more, the Seller or the Buyer? BUT is it bad? No, as it helps us explain the principle of Dark and Light: To see Light, we need Dark. Wrong is wrong even if no-one is doing it, Right is Right even if noone is doing it. Even a broken clock gives the right time

twice daily. Yes, even some of these guys can show one or two good moves, does that make them Grand Masters? In my Army officer training my commander said “Now you’re in the officer course, where a normal solider can make 100 mistakes a day, BUT, as an officer you’re allowed only 1 mistake a day. To lead men, you need to make less mistakes, not to get two things right in a day.You need to make less than 100 mistakes in a day, every day.” This is how we view our KAPAP Leaders – less mistakes! “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.” Bob Marley ..this is how I feel as a Martial Artist. I don’t see it as showing off how strong I am. I know when the day comes and I will have no other choice — when I have to fight with 6 tumors and life than Martial Arts will be there for me, and I’ll win. To all ‘Real Self-Defense systems’ to study from: As my father told me before he passed away when I asked him about war he said “we did what we had to do to defend ourselves and our families.” It’s not done for marketing promotion or posting on FaceBook. When you must defend you will find how much you know from playing with life and living right with love and peace. “Love everybody, but never sell your sword.” Paulo Coelho Here is one more principle: trust all and trust none, only trust yourself. But if you don’t trust yourself, for sure all will not be there for you as you need. It happened to me, and since I trust myself I recovered from being sick with

Israeli Martial Arts

Avi Nardia “Even a broken clock gives the right time twice daily. Yes, even some of these guys can show one or two good moves, does that make them Grand Masters?”

tumors. Lots of ‘Friends’ failed me or more-so themselves. Do I need them? “Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. And if you haven’t lear ned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.” Muhammad Ali Grab a plate and throw it on the ground, does it break? Now say you’re sorry, did it go back to the way it was before? But I study a great lesson: Storms make trees take deeper roots. All these lessons make me stronger! Sometimes it’s not the people who change, it’s the mask that falls away. In Japanese we say Honne and Tatemae. Honne and Tatemae are Japanese words that describe the contrast between a person’s true feelings and desires ( honne?) and the behavior and opinions one displays in public ( tatemae?, lit. “façade”). Honne may be contrary to what is expected by society or what is required according to one’s position and circumstances, and they are often kept hidden, except with one’s closest friends. Tatemae is what is expected by society and required according to one’s position and circumstances, and these may or may not

Israeli Martial Arts match one’s honne. The honne–tatemae divide is considered to be of paramount importance in Japanese culture. Cat in a Tree: Only One Way or Many Ways? [A Wingate University teaching story] I was demonstrating a series of techniques when I was interrupted by another instructor who criticized Avi’s teaching, saying it was wrong to give students choices. In order to function under stress he asserted, students should only be given one simple response. In this way they would be able to act instantly without thinking. To illustrate his point he began to tell a parable about a cat. I will have to paraphrase the story but the gist of it goes something like this. One day a cat was walking with a buffalo when they came across a crocodile. The buffalo tried to gore the crocodile but was killed and eaten whilst the cat simply ran up a tree and escaped. The next day the cat was walking with an elephant when they encountered a hunter. The elephant attempted to swat the hunter with his trunk but was shot and killed whilst the cat ran up a tree and

escaped. The story went on and on with the cat befriending a diverse range of unlucky animals. Unfortunately they were all killed in tragic circumstances whilst the hero of the tale simply ran up a tree and escaped. Avi patiently listened whilst the other instructor finished his story and then having skillfully made his point the man looked smugly around the room. Nodding his head sagely Avi paused for effect and asked if he could just ask one question: “what if there is no tree?”! The fact is that although I know where the other instructor was coming from he had demonstrated the old adage ‘a little bit of knowledge is dangerous.’ When initially teaching students to survive under stress, it is important that in the early stages students should be provided with a small range of options which deal with the most likely situations using classical or operant conditioning methods (‘stimulus – response’.) This will help students to quickly acquire the requisite key skills, build confidence, avoid ‘mind freeze’ and enable them to respond at the more unconscious level. This type of training will prepare students to act and

Avi Nardia “The Japanese say that it’s better to start to study 15 years later with the right teacher than to start with the wrong teacher.” react. Once those responses are mastered, students will then be taught the ‘what-if’ and the more advanced techniques as this is the element of training which will ultimately allow the student to adapt under pressure. The Japanese say that it’s better to start to study 15 years later with the right teacher than to start with the wrong teacher. In the current market of Martial Arts where the sale of achievement/rank certificates, where many instructors earn 7 levels in 3 days, you should ask about the roots of your teachers. Most teachers talk about other teachers, but I always explain to my students about my roots as a Martial Artist, as this is what we teach. “I don’t teach you to be soldiers.” I help them trace my roots, introduce them to my teachers in Karate, Aiki Kenpo Jujutsu, BJJ, Kendo and so on. I earned it all, I didn’t buy it! “When you have money in your hand, only you forget who you are, but when you do not have any money in your hand, the whole world forgets who you are.” Bill Gates This is not a saying for a Martial Arts teacher. A Martial Arts teacher is not there for money, we are here for students, for any need, to help support, and for direction. Yes we need to earn our incomes, but we don’t live by the dollar, we live by integrity. To close-out this column, and with everyone now thinking, The last thing in Martial Arts is the self-defense “Fight”, sharpening your moves is more important than hitting the tree – make-ready your axe first! “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Abraham Lincoln It’s the same in Martial Arts: Be a good Martial Artist and carry a sharp axe. Train yourself in mobility and stamina and all, then you will be ready when there’s a need to cut down a tree, and it’ll be easier, but if you try to cut the tree with no preparation, it may not work. “Current Karate is focusing too much on competition. In the interval in which Karate has been transformed into competition Karate, I think that many things have got lost, but I don't have the certainty of what it is... That's where my search begins.

Karate Do NAKA TATSUYA SENSEI A karateka “like in the movies When we speak of Shotokan Karate, the initials of the Japan Karate Association JKA - come immediately come to our mind. It was in the heart of this organization that Funakoshi Gichin and Masatoshi Nakayama developed the Shotokan style, of which JKA is currently its main backer. Fortunately, there are many masters teaching Shotokan Karate throughout the world, but one of the most demanded and followed is Naka Tatsuya Sensei. Many of us met him through his role in the film "Kur o Obi", a cult classic for the Karatekas, but the master Naka, far from being a movie actor, is a karateka with capital letters.

Karate Do He's been practicing Karate all his life and he's now taken on the task of investigating the roots and essence of this art in order to understand it and improve it. Thanks to the Spanish Association of Traditional Karate - JKA Spain, we were able to share a few minutes with Naka Sensei, who told us about his experience in cinema as well as his study and his concept of Karate. Interview with Naka Katsuya Sensei: Budo International: How did you start practicing Karate? Naka Katsuya Sensei: I started 40 years ago. I wanted to be strong in the fight. My first master was Takagi Sensei, of Wado Kai. And in Shotokan my master has been Tsuyama Sensei, from Takushoku University. Budo International: How did the possibility of making films emerge? Naka Katsuya Sensei: The producer of the film, Mr. Nishi, is a Karate Kyokushinkai practitioner. He loves making movies and he made one and showed it to different action films directors. But everyone was saying "Huh? Is this really Karate? “The people who saw the film thought it wasn't the image they had of Karate. So Mr. Nishi thought: "Well, let's see different styles of Karate." So he started visiting every Dojo in town, but he wasn't satisfied with what he was seeing. When he finally came over the JKA Dojo and saw me training and moving he said: "Great! Then he asked me to take part in the movie. I rejected Mr. Nishi's offer three times, but then he became my student and the next time I couldn't refuse. At first I wasn't going to play Taikan, but Gyryu. But then they changed.

Cinema and Martial Arts Budo International: Why that change from being the good guy to being the villain of the movie? Naka Katsuya Sensei: It seemed that I was better in the role of the baddy, because it was a scary character and it looked dangerous. Budo International: Working with film people and not with martial artists, were they surprised by your qualities?

Naka Katsuya Sensei: Yes, everyone was surprised. In the film shooting I was asked to slow down, because it couldn't be seen. Budo International: You have traveled to Okinawa, what were you looking for and what did you find? Naka Katsuya Sensei: Current Karate is too much focused on sports competition. In the interval in which Karate has been transformed into a competitive activity, I think many

Karate Do things have disappeared, but I don't have the certainty of what is it that was lost. Here's where my search begins. Budo Inter national: Are Shotokan Karate and Okinawan Karate very different? Naka Katsuya Sensei: They're practically the same. Okinawan Karate and Shotokan Karate look alike, although movements in Shotokan Karate are a bit wider.

Budo International: Have you ever practiced any other Martial Art? What have Martial Arts brought you about? Naka Katsuya Sensei: I have practiced Aikido, a little bit of Wu Shu from China, and now I'm training Bojutsu. They have brought me many things. Aikido works out a lot of circular and wide movements, and in Karate you must compact this movement. Also the Tai Sabaki.

Karate Do Budo International: Besides the hips, what should we keep in mind when practicing Shotokan Karate? Naka Katsuya Sensei: Inter-link and unite the whole body. Seek the independence of each member, but then unite them all. Harmony is very important.

you mustn’t do anything that could put him on alert. That is why Kihon Kumite is important. To make sure they do not see me, first I have to feel when they see me. First you have to work the inside, the part that is not seen. In addition, in Kumite and in real fight, the spirit is more important than technique. And you also train that.

Budo International: The "bunkai" practiced in Shotokan are realistic and applicable to personal defense, or are they just looking for other goals? Naka Katsuya Sensei: There is no kata bunkai. You have to ask the question inversely. It is just the opposite. You have to think, "What bunkai should I do to make it real?" You do not have to think that there is a specific bunkai and you have to do it. Starting with kata, what can you extract, which could be applicable to the real fight? You have to search for yourself.

Budo International: Is everything in the Kihon or is it necessary to continue building on the Kihon? Naka Katsuya Sensei: Everything is in Kata. Kihon is taking a part of Kata and work it out. And doing Kata techniques in pairs is Kihon Kumite. That is traditional Karate. But now Karate sports competition is first, and the technique is applied with a view to competition, so depending on the rules there are different forms of Karate. In traditional Karate there is Kata and from there comes the rest. I try to show how Kumite comes from Katas. There are many people who continue to use kickboxing or boxing rules and for the mere fact of wearing a karategi they say it's Karate. But Japanese Budo: Karate, Jujutsu, Kenjutsu ... all start from Kata! Budo International: What do you think about competition?

Budo International: Is there a real connection between Kata and combat? Naka Katsuya Sensei: Yes, there is. It is very important in Martial Arts not to be detected when moving. In Kata, even if you do it perfect, there is no opponent in front. When you are facing an opponent,

Karate Do Naka Katsuya Sensei: Thanks to competition Karate has become known. But depending on the rules, there are different versions of Karate. The Ippon Shobu of the JKA has origin in the philosophy of Katas, that's why Kata and Kumite are very close. The type of rules applied in competition affects Karate. Having Karate in the Olympic Games is a good thing to publicize Karate still more, but that is not Karate Do. Nevertheless, it can be good in order that many people start getting to know Karate in this way, and then approach Karate Do. When I was young, I only competed, but later I realized that there was another Karate. Budo International: You see karatekas from all over the world. Is Karate in Japan different than the one that is practiced abroad? Naka Katsuya Sensei: I only travel to areas that practice JKA Karate, but there is good level. It doesn't

change much about Japan. That is a satisfaction. Abroad you find many people who have more Budo spirit than in Japan, and that makes me happy. This is the fifth time I come to Spain. Here is good technique and good spirit. I’m looking forward to the future, We are going to continue improving far beyond! The most important thing is not to give up, so please continue training. We must thank the Master for his time, as well as Fernando Rivera and Juan Carmona for making possible this interview, and Iker Pérez for helping us with the translation. Thanks to them we have been able to get to know firsthand this excellent Karate Master. Naka Sensei, a karateka “like in the movies”. The founders of WTU Wing Tsun Universe, GM Sifu Alfred Neudorfer and Si-Mo Rosa Ferrante Bannera, present a new work, focused this time on Chum Kiu, the second of the "solo" movements or classic forms of Wing Tsun, from the WTU perspective. The WTU Chum Kiu, or "4 waves", is especially characterized by the use of the falling step, the 3 basic kicks (a Wing Tsun slogan for kicks says that "each step is a kick, and each kick is a step"), and the arm bridges, long and short bridges, which determine the way we come into contact with the attacker. The DVD includes the execution of the complete Chum Kiu movement, the 4 Chum Kiu sections with 3 applications for each one of them, with the use of the 3 basic kicks and the arm bridges. Finally, the video shows the sequences 2-7 of the Chum Kiu movements with a training partner or ChiSao. An excellent work which presents to us a new way of experiencing both the "solo" movements and those with a training partner in the Art of Wing Tsun.

Hi. My name is Justo Diéguez. I am the creator and founder of the KEYSI method. The difference between the KEYSI method and other systems is based on values: self-defense begins by valuing yourself, valuing who you are, and then you can start to value who the others are. Self-defense starts when you believe in yourself, when you really feel who you are, when you are really living your inner world, when you are you. It doesn't begin by wanting to be a person with bigger muscles than the rest; or because you believe to be more than others, or more intelligent; it doesn’t even begin because you have different qualities. It begins when you believe in yourself. Fighting is based on intuition, on instinct, not on technicalities. KEYSI is differentiated by a very simple way of working: While the rest of the martial arts are based in the development of the technique as an end in itself, in KEYSI we use the technique, of course, but we use it as a means, not as an end. KEYSI stands out for its simple way of working: While the rest of Martial Arts or any other system are based on the development of techniques as an end in itself, in KEYSI obviously uses technique but we use it as a means, never as an end. KEYSI's basic weapons and instruments are our natural weapons and tools: our limbs and our body in its entirety: Every part of our anatomy is liable to become a weapon. All this, combined with key elements such as body mechanics, distance, self-control, etc., give rise to this new and effective method. Justo Diéguez, its creator, presents in this video a complete sample of the Keysi method, which includes empty-hand workout, focus gloves, sticks, and numerous examples of emptyhanded self-defense situations as well as and against attacks with weapons such as sticks, knifes, including defense on the ground and in restricted spaces.

Commando Krav Maga has proven popular with many other martial arts instructors around the world, from various schools, who wish to enhance their own abilities and provide a reality based fighting system to their existing students that is both accessible and dependable. “Simplicity is genius is Moni's catchphrase but this trademark humility belies the work and thought which has to be done to distill anything to its core essence. Now suitably refined, this is a system which is suitable for, and accessible to, both teachers and their students. Military and civilian sectors. The experienced and the novice. This is because, quite simply, it works. It is based on fundamental principles and practices which, if adhered to, and with a little luck, will keep you safer on the street. So maybe it's time to take what ever you know onto another level. In this new DVD, Moni Aizik teaches us in all detail how to solve various situations that can usually occur in the street: kinfe attacks, punches, threats from the back with a knife or a gun and holding our hand, various examples on the ground as knife attacks or situations in which the aggressor applies us an Armbar or a Triangle, and how to solve weapon threatening situations against third parties.

Text and Photos: Sifu Salvador Sรกnchez

Interview with Sifu Donald Mak in Hong Kong He is one of the teachers that most surprised me on my last trip to Hong Kong. I had heard some acquaintances talk about Sifu Donald Mak and his excellent technical and human qualities. Not in vain, he is one of the teachers who have larger groups outside Hong Kong. A significant number of schools around the world that he visits regularly make it really difficult interviewing him in person, so first of all I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to this Wing Chun outstanding figure in Hong Kong for having been kind enough to welcoming us in his school and answering kindly to the questions that we asked him. On the very day he received us in his beautiful school, Sifu Donald had just returned from a long trip through Central and South America, so I was even more surprised by his willingness to attend to us.

Wing Chun Sifu Donald Mak is Chairman to the International Wing Chun Organization IWCO, with hundreds of training groups on all five continents, that make him a world reference Master in Wing Chun Kuen. Student of Sifu Chow Tze Chuen (Grandmaster Yip Man's direct disciple, who died a few months ago), Sifu Donald has managed to maintain the balance between the "old and the new". Scholar and studious of the origin of the style without losing at any moment the perspective of reality, he has been able to bring his students and schools in an equidistant place between the maximum respect to the tradition and a practical, direct and effective system, adapted to the present-day requirements. Personally I stay with his exquisite education: a kind, polite and respectful person with a great knowledge. When I said good bye to him, I told him that meeting him had been a great surprise for me, and now I repeat: THANK YOU ever so much, Sifu Donald! You have on me a sure admirer of your work!

Hong Kong Sifu Salvador Sánchez: Dear Sifu Donald Mak, thank you for welcoming us. I know you have just arrived from a long journey from America and you must be tired. Thank you personally and thanks too on behalf of Budo International Magazine Sifu Donald Mak: Thank you for coming. It's a pleasure. Budo International: When did you start to practice Wing Chun and who was your Master? Sifu Donald Mak: I started to practice in 1969 with the one who has been my teacher ever since: Grandmaster Chow Tze Chun. I recognize myself fortunate for having found a teacher like Sifu Chow. He is a most endearing person who deeply loves Kung Fu. He has never taught for money. His only interest has always been that of spreading the Wing Chun system to the greatest number of people. Always worried about improving and polishing his skills in Wing Chun, even today he continues practicing and doing Chi Sao every day at his 80 years of age! (The interview was conducted only a couple of months before the death of Grand Master Chow Tze Chun)

“Today I travel around the world where I teach Wing Chun to people who have a great interest in Kung.”

Budo International: Can you tell us anything about the way you train Wing Chun? As we all know, some schools focus their practice in Self-Defense while others do it in aspects related to Health, still others place emphasis on traditional aspects... How does Sifu Donald Mak train his students? Sifu Donald Mak: Different people, different interests. I think Wing Chun can contain all that and still be a great system. That is, there are people interested in many different aspects and Wing Chun can contain everything. It seems to be logical thinking that someone who practices Wing Chun should be principally interested in the Self-defense, but the other elements that are part of the style are also very interesting. A person who practices regularly will surely be healthier and will maintain his or her moving capacities better than a person who doesn't train. But obviously, the combative aspect is one of the main elements that all seek. Budo International: We can also observe that there are instructors who stick to the teaching program just like they received it from their masters. Others instead have added new elements with the intention of improving the system. Has Sifu Donald Mak introduced changes in his teaching method or does he keep the more traditional profile? Sifu Donald Mak: Well... Obviously every person has his or her own way of doing things. I personally instruct my students with exactly the same technical program I learned from my Master. Now different people can come up with different interpretations. This is completely normal because not everyone has the same ideas or preparation. Of course, I have added some ideas of mine or methods to teach, but in essence, I have respected the traditional system that I learned from my Sifu.

Hong Kong “It seems to be logical thinking that someone who practices Wing Chun should be principally interested in the Self-defense, but the other elements that are part of the style are also very interesting.

Hong Kong Budo International: If we had to specify the two most important aspects of practice for Sifu Donald Mak. Which ones would be? Sifu Donald Mak: Forms and Chi Sao Budo International: Talking about forms. In your opinion, what is the importance of the weapon forms in the Wing Chun system, Bart Cham Dao and Long Pole? Sifu Donald Mak: Well ... you have to look at it from several points. We must understand that Bart Cham Dao knives were (and currently are) banned in Hong Kong. So they are not really useful for self-defense. To me they are elements that enhance and complement the "empty hand" work in Wing Chun, especially the Long Pole form, whose important work is focused on strengthening the arms, wrists and hips. Budo International: You have been one of the most insistent teachers in the accomplishment of Chi Sao sparring type competitions. However, many people think that Chi Sao is not for that. Please, tell us your view. Sifu Donald Mak: Currently our way of doing Chi Sao is closer to Free Sparring, but we must establish two clear differences: In the first phase, when we practice Poon Sao and Chi Sao, we seek to train elements such as the application of the Wing Chun system principles, hand and body reactions, Wing Chun hands in the attack / defense roles, etc. In a second phase that is called Guo Sao, intensity goes up and we must try to carry out simultaneously defenses and attacks, displacements to neutralize the attacks, etc. In short, a work much closer to combat or sparring.

“A few years ago, not too many people practiced Wing Chun. Today there are hundreds, thousands.

Hong Kong Budo International: Wing Chun has grown very much all over the world, especially as a result of the films about Grandmaster Yip Man’s life. Do you think this is good for the style? Sifu Donald Mak: Well, I'd say that, like almost everything, this growth has its good points and others not so good. But overall I think it's positive because many people have come to know Wing Chun and today it's practiced all over the world. A few years ago, only a few of us practiced Wing Chun in Hong Kong. Today I travel around the world where I teach Wing Chun to people who have a great interest in Kung Fu and all this is all thanks to elements like these films about Yip Man. Obviously, they are just movies! It's something that is part of the people's entertainment and nothing else. That's why I think it's a good thing. Budo International: But in general, you think the level is good, right? In your opinion, is Wing Chun better today than it was forty years ago or is it worse? Sifu Donald Mak: I think it's better today, and the logic is the same. A few years ago, not too many people practiced Wing Chun. Today there are hundreds,

Wing Chun thousands, even people who live entirely from practicing and teaching. This can only make the style progress and improve. This is a fairly logical question. Budo International: That's all, master. I could spend hours chatting with you. I can only thank you for all your attention and generosity. You are a great Master. All our respect! Sifu Donald Mak: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure! If you visit Hong Kong, do not miss the opportunity to visit and train with this excellent teacher who has achieved something really difficult: the balance between the NEW and the OLD You can contact Sifu Donald Mak in: IWCO Hong Kong Address: Flat 812, 8th Floor, Yuen Fat Industrial Building, 25 Wang Chiu Road, Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong (At 5 minutes walking distance from Exit A of Kowloon Bay MTR Station). The Mystery of Pressure Point Fighting’s Elusive History In this article my goal is to provide some information as well as some entertainment as a departure from my usual writings on technical principles and concepts. A question that is often asked in training, especially as a pressure point practitioner of any style takes on a deeper study, is usually “where did pressure points originate?”. What seems like a simple question can take the inquisitive academic down the path of an indepth theor etical dissertation fit for a doctorate of philosophy.

Kyusho Jitsu

et me start with full transparency by sharing my honest answer of “I don’t know”. Before you stop reading, the reality is that no one person living today can, with 100% certainty, answer that question. However, with this article, I decided to offer some perspective regarding commonly held views and controversial beliefs. As we begin, let me clarify that it is normal for many historical accounts to be very subjective, even when based on “ancient” documents, and they can only be as accurate as the honesty and actual knowledge of the author. This of course does not mean that all history is inaccurate, simply a caveat that it is mostly biased whether intentionally or not. And It is no different today than it was thousands of years ago. Look for example at the multiple sides of a political debate on any subject and it will be evident that usually the winning side will write its perspective of history as the mainstream thought or at the very least try to influence it. Still, we should not discount history and we should extract what value we can from the lessons of the past. As responsible individuals, let us think rather critically about any proposed belief or historical account but not dismissively. In short, history is biased by individuals, society, culture, current morality, as well as the prevailing science of that time. We should try to view it from that perspective as we examine ideas and interpretations. We are truly fortunate to live in the information age where an almost dizzying stream of diverse cultural thoughts and perspectives are readily available to us. In my personal studies, I have come across claims that the ancient Indians developed and tested the first applications of vital points in combat through torturous trial and error on enemies prisoners and slaves. I’ve also read theories on how Achilles was not just a mythological hero, but a lesson on learning about finding vulnerability in anatomy or weakness in any adversary. An additional take can even be found in the Old Testament’s book of Genesis in which Jacob wrestles with an angel disguised as a man and is struck painfully in the hollow of the thigh or hip socket in a combative use of a vital point. In fact, I have dozens of books in my personal library where acupoints are claimed to have originated in the cultures of India, Korea, China, Japan, Persia, Rome, and even the Native Americans, as just a few examples. While intriguing, we all know that just because it is written, it doesn't necessarily make it an absolute “fact”.

L

I am not attempting to make the argument of who is right or wrong as what matters to me is which path of study I choose to follow in the present. Therefore, I have purposefully omitted my preferences to avoid debate or judgment, as this article is meant to be entertaining; and as such they simply do not matter. I would always encourage the reader to take on their own journey of exploration, should they choose, and question everything incessantly. In my readings of Pressure Points theories, I have found more commonality and similarities than actual differences, although they are described somewhat differently. For example, in an Indian text, the Marma Adi (pressure points), are numbered as 107 Marmas. That text was originally written in Sanskrit (to give you the general idea of how long ago it was recorded), while in a number of Chinese texts on Dimmak (pressure points), the number of points is 108 with the locations being remarkably similar in description and illustrations. And on the topic of healing energetics, which is right: the Chakras or the Dan Teins? Any of these approaches can be linked to pressure points with their own historical documentation from ancient cultures. For the practitioners of Kalaripayat, the Kung Fu, Hapkido or modern day students of personal protection, what matters most is the effectiveness of this knowledge through application that provides reliable outcomes. Again in the spirit of both credit and transparency, my particular area of practice in pressure point theory, is based primarily on what I have learned from GM George Dillman and GM Chris Thomas. The Dillman method is based on the Okinawan art of Ryukyu Kempo Kyusho Jitsu Tomari Te.

Many Okinawan systems openly acknowledge the strong influence of Chinese martial arts within their development and knowing this, allowed the modern pioneers to go deeper into the source materials to learn. Not all systems are as forthcoming about the possibility of non-native cultural influence. Another take on this is that it really didn’t matter where the knowledge originated so long as it was practical and worked. For example, my beginning martial studies are rooted in the Korean martial arts and prior to being a student of these Western pressure point pioneers, I was taught pressure points as vital targets by GM John Pellegrini, my Hapkido instructor. It was GM Pellegrini’s openness and encouragement that excited me to learn more. At the time, early in my study, I just didn’t

understand them well enough and it was through both seeking and good fortune that GM Chris Thomas was able to share with me the Dillman Method. Yet even then as an ever curious individual, I was also influenced by GM Pier Tsui Po’s writings on Dimmak, in particular his book “The Two Dragons” which helped me connect what I was learning to both Eastern and Western methodologies. As a martial arts teacher, healthcare practitioner and former military medic, the central theory of the two dragons being warrior and healer was very influential for me personally in achieving balance. So, my historical bias lies with the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to pressure points through experience, despite the majority of my training not being in Chinese martial arts.

Kyusho Jitsu

There are numerous accounts that acupuncture as well as other aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine was already widespread in the thirteenth century, not only throughout Asia but also some areas of Europe. With this in mind, we must go further back in time where we begin by noticing that acupuncture and vital points can be traced back to the early recordings of the Stone Age, a time that far predates classical antiquity, that linked this type of knowledge through scientific approach and documentation. Some estimates refer to actual carvings that may be 3000-5000 years old. We do have a number of well researched references from several regions throughout Asia that commonly refer to acupuncture in the 700s A.D. (back into the mythological age of the Yellow Emperor-2697 B.C- 2597 B.C.), where the Yellow Emperor tasked his physician to document this information. While this is certainly debatable, a more difficult date to refute was the publishing of the Yellow Emperor’s Classic on Internal Medicine published around 100 B.C. There are quotations attributed to Chinese Medical texts describing Yin/Yang concepts from as early as 400 B. C. Clearly, the study and applications of Traditional Chinese Medicine have documentation to support a 2000 years history. While it is a bit easier to find historical documents that reference healing, there are fewer of such age that account for the combative use of acupoints or vital points. This could be due to the knowledge being coveted and something that intuitively you would not want shared with an enemy or warring tribe. Nonetheless, there are still accounts literally etched in rock throughout the world, across many cultures, demonstrating such warring applications and also

veiled oral and written references in old world mythology and legend. It is doubtful that the knowledge of human vulnerability was only the domain of a single culture. However, it is the dominant culture that authors history of such knowledge which has the most supported claim. I wonder what knowledge has been lost through the civilizations over centuries long past. As a critical thinker, I do not readily assume any belief, and even through my ongoing experience I enjoy challenging my own limited perspective of reality and that of “accepted” history. I prefer to adhere to a scientific method throughout my studies in the form of testable explanations and validated outcomes. In tactical pressure points this is often demonstrated by the act of “Feeling is Believing” which can be explained with both Western and Eastern rationality. To continue to lear n, I must allow myself to be open to the possibility of new knowledge that I allow myself to experience by letting go of judgment and the internal narrative of my own biased history. I encourage my colleagues and students to allow themselves to do the same to enjoy the mystery of this life. I hope that you found my personal musings on this elusive subject entertaining and a short reprieve from my past technical articles. We are still left in mystery rather than historical truth, but, hopefully, maybe a little more informed, open-minded and curious For more information on Combat Hapkido Tactical Pressure Point Manual, instructional series DVDs, seminars and Instructor Certification, visit: www.dsihq.com and Budo Inter national at: lwww.budointernational.net. Tengu: Far Beyond Mysticism The natural diagrams of life as a whole, today in different rereading lines, reveal to us that we are submerged in diverse concepts that over the centuries have been translated by different cultures and redirected by panoramas that form an immense kaleidoscope in the human being mind as a thinking and rational creature. As much as we want to deny it, even if we are lucid enough to see material life as the base that leads us to the essential - each one will see it with the depth that is pertinent to him or to her -, human life transits between the mythical realm (today wrapped by science, religions, brotherhoods, etc., and their myths), and the mystical phenomenon which, in fact, animated by a powerful and deep dynamism, made of ripeness and inner overcome, substantial and anxious for exalted impulses, organizes the source of thought towards a vision beyond forms.

“There is very little known about Shizen culture, despite its deep influence on Japanese traditions. This article comes to discover some aspects of the studies on Tengu and Oni, so obvious as little understood in Japanese traditions.

Shidoshi Jordan Augusto

The distance considered primary between what we are and what we imagine ourselves to be, observing with the necessary perspective and self-observation, gains momentum in this time of innumerable manifestations parallel to the physical world, since we are the meeting and disagreement point through the so much-vaunted and appreciated virtual image. Undoubtedly, in the midst of philosophical traditions, the East is the one that presents, more than any other, the longest continuous development in time. It is important to emphasize that in Eastern peoples, philosophy and spirituality, and even religion for some, are never separated. Thus, we classify the parallels that exist between material and spiritual life in magnetic fields of accumulations that are constantly altered between the pathways of access and change in human life. The theory is simple: human beings manifest themselves under heat waves that are fed by the movement of metals in the bloodstream and the burning of glucose in the body. The idea of the magnetic theory that attracts or repels what it emanates delineates a pattern of actions and movements that go against the metals that are found in nature. Hence the explanation of one place being different from another, depending on the amount of accumulations of forces and energies. They began by observing that the four elements didn't work only in the conditions of creation and destruction. They discovered that in their complementary state, fire and earth, for example, are completed by creating the "magma" of volcanoes as their manifestation. Air and water, whose movements are only possible by the action of wind... and so on. It is also true that at

Shidoshi Jordan Augusto

Cultura contraposition levels, the elements create and destroy. The difference? Energy and tension! While tension requires two points of communication, the energy walks in a singular and individual way. They called this "Tengu", whose preponderance points to what is known today as Fractal. A search for answers (myths, more questions than answers), from the past, undoubtedly pushed the Shizen away from the road that led to fanaticism or the faith that can moves mountains. Far beyond this, they saw life as a consequence of spiralshaped helical forces that surround the whole and are capable of making arise and disappear. Technically, a fractal is an object that does not lose its shape as it is enlarged, keeping its structure identical to the original. In a constant struggle to understand the mechanisms of the Universe, several were the masters who throughout centuries could prove that amid a fractal,

everything repeats itself. As science says, there are two categories of fractals: geometric fractals, which continuously repeat an identical pattern, and random fractals. The Shizen in their time classified such mechanisms of influence as "Tengu and Oni". Represented by the line that adds and divides, each energy has its strong and fragile point. This means that Yin and Yang are present in all the manifestations of forces, tensions and energies. The Miryoku explained that one force supports the other. That is, here we can say that Tengu holds Oni and vice versa. Yamamoto Sensei explained that it's easy if we speak in magnetism. So he said: The response of the matter (person) to the presence of an exciting magnetic field (Tengu) or even the fact that it has a permanent magnetization, is directly related to the particular properties of each material to be considered (Plot and central frequency of each person).

The application of an external exciting field (Oni, Michi no Ki, Ummei...) changes the situation, however, it is easy to see domains whose orientations are aligned with the field to which they are subject. So let's see: Tengu is like a field, a fractal that provides energy to ONI. In order to do this, Tengu offers a force that at the level of tension and energy - energetically favored p ro m o t e s t h e e x p a n s i o n o f t h e b o rd e r s o f t h e s e domains to the detriment of the others. It's also empirically observed the rotation of the magnetization direction of the other domains in the sense of aligning themselves with the exciting field - Positive / negative, Yin / Yang. The application of the force field promoted by Tengu leads to a geometric and energetic reconfiguration of the magnetic domain system, and the minimization of energy after the removal of the exciting field does not imply the

immediate return to the condition of each force in expansion or contraction. From Tengu arises a "specific" point (the one that is conscious), from whose awareness, in turn, arises the concept of "two" (yin and yang), of which number "three" is implicit (sky, earth, and humanity). Shiniyuki Sensei said that from there, among "voids and fills" all possibilities arise. However, these possibilities are called ONI. Diverse questions arise about the relationships existing at ceremonial levels and the elements. Let's see: Since the body is a tensional field, or condensed energy, it's associated with the processes of daily change. This means that your vibrations will be associated with the structuring processes of what you emanate if it attracts. For this, they defined life as a phenomenon "with and without brilliance" and, for this, they established the elements that formalize this thought. The physical body is represented by the three elements of structural formation of life without shine: water, wood and metal. It is not difficult for us to understand it, since wood represents the body itself and the other two are present within it. Water: it's associated with essential fluids, such as hormones, the lymphatic system, the marrow, enzymes, all of them with great energetic potential. Water evaporates with excess heat; in humans the energy of water is released by excess of stress and strong emotions. The way of conserving the energy of water is through stillness and rest. It seeks to keep the "cold". Wood: like a tree, it's associated with the energycreating expansion force, arousing the sexual desire to procreate (fruits). It's associated with vigor of youth,

“While tension requires two points of communication, the energy walks in a singular and individual way. They called this ‘Tengu’, whose preponderance points to what is known today as Fractal.”

Shidoshi Jordan Augusto

growth and development. Free in its form and expression, it needs space to give vent to its expansion. If we block its development, we create feelings of frustration, anger, jealousy, and stagnation. Metal: it is associated with energy that begins to "condense", to contract, to tur n inward to accumulate and store. It's the moment when the body goes through a new process; if at this stage there is not enough energy to contract, there will not be enough force to move on to the next step. It is when the body enters introspection, re-evaluation, when it recycles old feelings, external attachments and the excess of acquired emotions... The Ashikoro is a clear example of this! When the body resists this energy, it is imprisoned in the past and can create states of melancholy, sadness and depression, which manifest with back pain, breathing difficulties, skin problems and decreased resistance. Spirit is represented by life with Brightness. The spiritual body is represented by the 3 elements of structural formation of life with brilliance: fire, air and earth. It is not difficult for us to understand it, since there are three essential products. Fire: it is associated with the heart, the point that distributes blood and its energy through the body. This energy is associated with love and compassion, with generosity and joy, with openness and abundance. If we block this energy, the result is hypertension, heart problems and nervous disorders. Earth: is associated with the moment when the energy of the fire decreases, transforming itself into Earth energy. It is also associated with the stomach, spleen and pancreas, which are located in the center of the body and feed the entire body system. Air: is associated with the reserve of vital energy and the ability to accept life in its constant changes and changes. It relates to mental and psychic digestion (the ability to digest life). * Thus, when they come together, "body and spirit" produce different phenomena during a ceremony. The expansions that the Miryoku has more analogy are: Light, electricity and transcendence.

Following this bias, there are in Nature some physically unstable elements, whose atoms, when disintegrating, emit energy in the form of radiation. The name radioactivity is given precisely to this property that such atoms have to emit radiation. When we observe from the perspective of Tengu, Miryoku sages have stated that these forces can act in fields of greater or less tension. Let me explain: The tensional, physical body has exactly the property of emitting special radiations in the form of heat, light, and electricity - that is, energy. However, when this energy emitted by the physical body acts on parallel tensional fields, we say that, unlike the laws we know, these (the fields) are associated with the environment where all energy needs adjacent factors to become dynamic. This means that the body that produces it, if it's not in tune, gets into a complete dissociation. It is enough to observe that matter, as such, presents phenomena of spontaneous decomposition. This decomposition is accompanied by energy development. This also happens in life, which leads us to think that it's physical-dynamic impersonation. Well, this is how Shiniyuki Sensei explained: • In the fields of greater tension, its nucleus produces a spiral of evolutive (conceptual) Cycle : matter, energy, spirit. • In the fields of greatest tension, its nucleus produces a spiral of involutive (spatial) Cycle: spirit, energy, matter. Hence, this movement in expansion and in exteriorization.

“Tengu is like a field, a fractal that provides energy to ONI. In order to do this, Tengu offers a force that at the level of tension and energy - energetically favored promotes the expansion of the borders of these domains to the detriment of the others.”

At levels of Tension of Tengu in a dissociative state, the matter that produces it no longer has its own life and it responds to the impulse of this new dynamic vortex that it itself generated - it is all invaded and moved. At the spirit level, that is, at levels of sensitivity, it's where dissociation - as well as association - also produces ability to record impressions, due to the chemical exchange intimate structure. The difference is that negative tension produces phenomena of negative psyche, although very rudimentary. In a lecture at which I was present, Yamamoto Sensei explained that the organism is an ideoplastic construction; it occurs as soon as the evolutionary maturation of the environment, matter, allows the manifestation of the latent principle and manifests itself differently, according to the circumstances of the surroundings - where and how to allow the development of the environment, of manifestation. Through the construction of the body, we can observe the organs and their function, for they arise together, and their progress is reciprocal, due to the mutual support of the organ on the function that develops it and the function on the organ that perfects it. Thus consciousness does not create life, nor does life create consciousness, but both work and help one another. However, Shizen's reality surpassed the point or line of simple observation. They developed their methods and concepts to observe and, if possible, interact with such waves of energy that, according to the brightest scholars, were always there: neither evolve nor do they experience an involution. Perhaps the best definition leads us to think that the main properties that characterize fractals are self-similarity and infinite complexity, being their dimension the point of greatest observation. Centuries were of great help in this orientation towards the imagined answers, since the phenomena of the psychic forces obey the same laws of coordination and equilibrium to which also obey the laws of matter and the lower forces. Shizen sages studied the many forms of "fate", traced navigable waterways in the midst of events that could not be avoided, perceived the strong influence of the communicating extremes.... Anyway, much has been studied, improved, discovered, and what we know today as Tengu, within the Shizen vision (it's worth emphasizing that here Tengu does not possess the mystical or mythical vision of other Eastern segments) is the basis of an orientation that serves as a platform for understandings that, being an axis of events and constant proofs, it's natural to be moved and awakened, even in its immaterial forms - if it's interrupted by the echo of human vicissitudes -, an immateriality that continues and completes itself.

Amidst an immense complexity of thoughts and concepts, the Shizen were organized into, we could say, 41 subjects that summarize their studies in so many perpendicular slopes and reasoning that make the point of expansion with Tengu hardly the basis for the so reserved vision that embraces the line that seeks lucidity. Embedded in a culture rich in its abundant festivities, concepts and fluency in its various approaches to life and death, they translate their multiple visions of life into curious and sophisticated definitions. This, in turn, turned out to be the object of admiration of the academicians, who defined them as singular and a great treasure, being the idea of the convergence of two forces (that is, the sensitization of human consciousness to overcome the last diaphragms and the attraction of the higher centers of thought) a way of reaching deep perception. We who were born in the period that followed World War II, a post-war period (though it's hard to judge someone who is immersed in that epoch), participate in a reality already modified in its social patterns, characterized or not by the line of the freedom of concepts, and the variation of life within its liquid concepts (beautifully translated by Zigmun Baumam) that speak of a life that vibrates in an age of liquidity, fluidity, volatility, uncertainty and insecurity. Similarly, the Shizen, Buddha, Lao Tse and others spoke about the ephemerality of life and the unsustainability of forms. By this bias, in our epoch arises the diatribe of being one with yourself and, consequently, one with life in a search that is selfelaborated with own manifestations and that is measured at the level of a materialism and a strength classified as spiritual. The 20th century marked us with the arrival of great events, alterations that turned out to be the bridge between the "before" - the traditional, hardened, rigid and melancholic way of aspiration among being, having, and wanting - and the "now", that produces the new and true way of life in this modern, technological 21st century, where the ideas and certainties of old are withdrawn from the "bigger stage" to give space to the logic of a new time loaded by consumption, by the enjoyment of artificiality. In the middle of all this universe of speed and social roughness, there still survive - in the form of small communities of studies - the Shizen and their traditions. Will it be?

Shidoshi Jordan Augusto

When I say "will it be" is because in the midst of this general agitation, which is the fragmentation and restoration of thought, and as it was to be expected, also, the currents of thought that surround the human environment, without a shadow of a doubt, keeping the old, the traditional, without getting lost in the face of the intoxicating oscillation of the present, is an arduous and difficult task. The secret? Perhaps the form of thought, the empirical and pragmatic search for a necessary observation that accepts the "everything" as it is. In different occasions, being a spectator of the approach of great professionals and social characters of my time, I could hear from the masters that it's natural for a displacement of psychic forces to excite other displacements, since nothing is isolated in the universe. When observing these two forces, even though each one has a line of observation, they both divide the same condition, they have to be classified as complementary realities: Oni can be - analogically exemplified - from what comes out of the mouth of a Tengu, until that which is placed in its backs; the opposite of its direction.

“Represented by the line that adds and divides, each energy has its strong and fragile point. This means that Yin and Yang are present in all the manifestations of forces, tensions and energies. The Miryoku explained that one force supports the other. That is, here we can say that Tengu holds Oni and vice versa.

Aikido

It's been thir teen years already since we presented the first Aikido video of the Peña brothers, and we are most glad to say that the successful omens for both as teachers of the Steven Seagal's Aikido line have been happily fulfilled in this time. For that reason, and with the idea of sharing this information with a whole new generation, we've decided to bring this work back to light. It's not trivial, especially for the Spaniards, the presence of their pupil Fran Rivera Ordoñez in the photos illustrating this article. He is quite a character, but above all a great person, liberal, gentle and generous with his teachers, who kindly has participated in the recording of the video and in the photo session. Recently r etir ed from the arena, we hope to interview him again soon in these pages. Alfredo Tucci qÉñíW=Antonio Peña, Marcos Peña mÜçíçëW=© www.budointernational.com

Aikido Steven Seagal revolutionized the image of Aikido as well as converting into a Martial Art of the masses. It’s curious how both things occurred at the same time, but what’s certain is that when, as much the normal spectators as the Martial Artists, saw his movements on screen for the first time we knew that something big was happening. His success (he is already vox populi) keeps him out of reach of the majority of students; he had to find those who would continuing the teaching in his own dojos, from among his students. It has been a long while for the fruits of that strategy to be seen: disagr eements, changes, the crazy life of Hollywood! Life is difficult at those heights (we suppose!) and beyond a few, very sporadic seminars, there have been really very few who have had access to adequate training in the sphere of this powerful and r ealistic focus of Aikido, which will undoubtedly cause more and more enthusiasm each day among the students to the extent that they can learn it. This was the fortunate case of those two brothers from Seville, Spain, Marcos and Antonio Pena, one serious and circumspect, the other talkative and happy-golucky, a perfect combination of Yin and Yang to communicate and teach the style in which Matsuoka Sensei, direct student of Seagal, initiated and directed them and that they themselves teach to a lot of students; another no less important stage in the strict discipline of another

Steven Seagal's Aikido The Matsuoka Sensei Lineage

Aikido torch-bearer of Seagal, Reinosa Sensei (about whom we have already heard impressive stories concerning his character and technique), completed a Martial education in a formula with a lot of Aikido that is much more seen on screens that in the dojos. And, when they told me, “Aikido? Yes, what Seagal does!” and I visited a dojo for the first time, for me, I’m sure that for many others… concluding… As if it were another thing! Curious, interested, and sincere students and Masters can now access it in an instructional video that the Pena brothers, along with Budo International, have prepared for you; meanwhile, we leave you with this interesting article that will make (or so I hope!) more than one think, but, be careful, for as the refrain says, “The truth will make you free,” but undoubtedly, before that… it will hurt.

Aikido The origin

“The universal principles behind Aikido are not unreachable theories but should be the instruments through which the practitioner satisfies these bases.”

Aikido of the Kisei Dojo school is characterized, in its practice, by being developed from a more sincere and real perspective, which connects to the earliest times of this noble Japanese Art taught by its founder, O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba, times in which Aikido demonstrated that it was a Martial Art by its own merits. Its lines were more direct, shorter, its martial sense was unquestionable, and it was practiced in this way by the first generations of Masters. It was so much like this that the Dojo called Kobukan was known by the nickname of Hell’s Dojo for its extraordinary and intense training. This perspective is not exclusive to those times and has arrived to our days still alive through numerous Masters who shine with their own light, like Kanai Sensei, Ishiaka Sensei, Saito Sensei, Isoyama Sensei, etc. This last one was, among others, Sensei of the Master-actor Steven Seagal Sensei, and whose principal student was Haruo Matsuoka Sensei, who is currently found under the direction of Master Abe Sensei, 10th Dan. The teachings of Haruo Matsuoka Sensei are what the instructors Antonio and Marcos Pena follow, the two technical directors of the Association of Aikido Kiseidojo whose principal objective is the diffusion of a fast, fluid and energetic Aikido.

The technique In the work presented for black belt, they have chosen techniques that come from the central teachings of the Kisei Dojo school, structured for the “empty hands” work on three levels. In them, the Aikidoca must practice conforming to his own circumstances and characteristics, keeping in mind an essential maxim of “common sense” in whatever he does. In the first level one studies the basics, but, what must we understand by basics in Aikido? In our opinion, this deals with a concept that is not clearly understood by the Aikidocas. The universal principles behind Aikido are not unreachable theories but should be the instruments through which the practitioner satisfies these bases. But, more concretely, what bases? Tai sabaki (spiralling body movement), Te-sabaki (hand movements), Kamae (guards), triangulations (the triangle in movement is a perfect circle that does not present any openings), these kinds of exercises plus the ukemis (falls) are the bases that any Aikidoca must perfect. Without the domination of said concepts, the posterior realization of the techniques will be marred. Furthermore, at this level, the Aikidoca practices the martial technique as a simple form (kata)

without keeping in mind any concept of selfdefense, although he will keep in mind that the technique comes from the intention of grabbing and from the necessity the opponent not consolidate himself since in this case we would be exposed in excess to a posterior attack more powerful than a simple grip. In this way, the practitioner, through the first level, would assimilate the bases, the principles of Aikido, and would be prepared for the next step, where Tori (the one who does the technique) really assumes the control of the action. For that, we show hand movement on the video that is practiced in the majority of Aikido schools in order to avoid being grabbed or hit, such as “uke nagashi”, a movement that comes from the sword and whose principal

idea is to protect the zone that is going to be struck or grabbed with the arm so that, in the following instant, we can flow with the attack (kimusubi)—following the lines of the aggressor—as well as triangulations, and hand entrances in “irimi”, which facilitate the study of the movement with a stable body center. On the second level, the Aikidoca learns to do the technique before being grabbed or hit. On the video, distinct techniques are presented where the practitioner finds himself, as we understand it, with something that must be decisive when it comes to practicing Aikido, “honest” attacks, and where common sense and sincere practice show you that to allow total contact is an error except when you oblige an Uke to totally collaborate, going beyond any logic.

Aikido

On this level, the control of the hands is very important given that with them one grabs and one strikes, and from there comes the need to establish our security distance and do techniques that allow total control (yubi waza). This work is essential in our school. Also, it is necessary to pay a lot of attention to anticipation (sen no sen), body position, and the mental disposition of emptiness (mushin) in order to maintain the central line of Uke (attacker) and a safe angle for entering and exiting, all necessary elements in order to keep almost total control over the attacker, real control, that is, that in which the attacker has no possibility of counter-attack for lack of space and time. For that, it is necessary to practice with the idea that Uke (attacker-partner) is “alive” and, in the case of offering him an opening doing some technique, he will have to counter-attack us, all of this with enthusiasm and in the idea that the work of both partners is based on honesty and that the work is productive for both of them. Our Master, Matsuoka Sensei, repeats to us that the techniques must be done in the same way that one does Japanese calligraphy, that is to say, in a single, firm, quick, continuous stroke with hardly any interruption; Master Ikazuchi says, “The circular trajectory of a movement has neither beginning nor end and in this way the flow of energy that gives it life is not interrupted in its constant fluidity.”

Steven Seagal's Aikido The Matsuoka Sensei Lineage

Aikido

We say in our practice that one has to attain the capacity to do a technique in the time a tsuki (punch) lasts, and the fact is, you really won’t have more time. For that, the video shows techniques like Kaiten nage, uke nagashi tenkan kote gaeshi, ryote yubi kokyiu nage, etc., which allow one to control the principle axis of balance of the attacker from the first moment and at a speed in which there is no room for games with uke since in any other way we would be training on a martial illusion, creating a fictitious reality that would only entail the practice of play between two people that would have nothing to do with the Martial Art created by O Sensei. On the third level, the mental aspect acquires notable relevance. It is here where the concept of emptiness acquires its greatest sense. The practitioner will have to face multiple and real attacks, without contemplation; in a nutshell: they will go for him. In this phase, there won’t be time to think, only act. One will have to confront kicks, sweeps, charges… making one’s Aikido more versatile, adapting it to the different attacks only with the universe, said O Sensei, so they will have no place to strike. On this level, the focus of the practice is on Randori (attack of three partners). Principally, it is an intense and very real mental exercise that gives the practitioner maturity and comprehension of the true practice. Balance axis, positions, entry angles, irimi and tekan, all that was learned before is put to the test. Tori will need a mental state based on mushin (emptiness) without thinking that I’m going to do this or that, simply, one must “stop doing” and take the initiative (“deashi”) in all actions. The attackers will have a central idea, to immobilize their partner on the ground in the shortest possible time through any attack or grip. If tori lacks mental and physical aptitude, in a martial sense, he will be on the ground with his partners on top of him in less than two seconds. It is in this moment where one has to demonstrate oneself. The base of this exercise is the Jyu waza or free technique with various partners in order to learn the exit angles, the control of the hands, stability, etc.

For reflection The Aikido taught by Haruo Matsuoka Sensei is not only centred on the physical aspect, but especially on the spiritual and health aspects. His etiquette is

extremely rigorous and the idea that one mustn’t lose the origins of Aikido is always found in his practice. For that, we have found our path, the path of the Kisei dojo through its practice. In this, you will find elements to improve health like the practice of macro-biotic, the study of the Japanese culture through their customs, and, furthermore, a method of defense that is truly effective. One must be aware that Aikido is a Martial Art and not a religion, although it contains great ethical principles, nor is it an art that is inefficient for our defense, but on the contrary, and for this it is necessary for it to be practiced as such. In this sense, the Aikidoca should ask himself if a person who weights 110 lbs could get out of a grip from a person who weights 175 lbs or more. It seems to me that the answer is evident; then why do they continue doing movements that go against the body’s dynamic, and what is worse, against the principles of Aikido? Think about it, if you don’t let yourself be struck, why let yourself be grabbed? This is our maxim. One must be honest and open in spirit and mind, and weigh the just value of our practice. Aikido pursues a very laudable end, but, at the same time, it is highly complex, and possibly it is from this where its attraction radiates, that is, avoiding that they hurt you without hurting. And, for that, the training must be based on common sense, on honesty, and on sincerity. Only then will we be able to control the opponent and have the possibility to choose; it is here where Aikido’s compassion stems, in the opposite case, we will be simply “playing” doing Aikido.

Karate Do Sanchin kata- the foundation of all the other katas Katas (exercizes) are performed in many styles of martial arts. With the help of these particular forms of exercizes, many diverse techniques are practiced. According to some sources, it is assumed that there are more than 400 different katas in the world today, performed in many diverse styles of martial arts. However, if we are to single out one kata that is special in its form and significance, it would surely be the Sanchin kata. The Sanchin kata differs from all the rest by its use and representation in various styles of martial arts. For example, the Sanchin kata's use can be found in martial arts such as Karate and Kung Fu, although its influence is seen in other Asian martial arts.

“The fact that the Sanchin kata used to be performed on Okinawa in a period from 18 months until up to two years says enough about its importance.

Karate Do It is believed that the Sanchin kata appeared around the year 530 in the Shaolin temple, that it is 1500 years old and that its creator was the monk Bodidharma. It was created as a sort of a universal system of basic fighting exercize, but also a form of a physical exercize. According to a legend as well as certain foreknowledge, it is thought that the original name of the practice was 18 hand movements. Since the time it has originated until today, the practice was transmitted from one generation to another by various martial arts masters that have preserved it until today. If we want to gain knowledge about its origin, especially because it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest katas ever to exist, its performance in various styles of martial arts should be examined.

“Today even two variations of the Sanchin kata are performed in the Goyu Ryu style of Karate. The first one is Sanchin Dai Ni (created by Higashionna) and the second one is Sanchin Dai Ichi (created by Miyagi).

Let's start from the beginning. The name Sanchin (Sanchin (サンチン) can be divided into two Chinese words- “san, 三“ which means three and “chin, 戦“ which means battle, i.e. a form of a conflict or war. The name of the this kata is usually translated as “three conflicts“ although the kata is also known under the translation “meditation in movement“. If we are talking about three conflicts, it is usually assumed that they are referred to the conflicts of the mind, body and spirit, i.e. a specific human quality which connects the mind with the body. The kata is most popular in karate under the name sanchin, but the same kata has a number of other names. For example, in China (in many Kung Fu variations) “san chin“ is in the Cantonese dialect also existing as “saam jin“ and in the Mandarin dialect it is called “san chan“ or “san chien“ (七步三 战) in the Fukien dialect. This kata is also known under the Chinese names of “sam chian“, “san chiem“ or the most well- known kung fu names “san zhan“ or “zach zhan“. What makes this kata stand out from all the other katas is an unbelievable large number of style in which it is practiced. This is why the kata Sanchin is often seen in Karate styles such as Goyu Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Shito Ryu, Isshin Ryu, Kyokushinkai, Chito ryu, Kobayashi ryu, Shorin Ryu, Sankukai (Nanbu) Ryu,

Karate Do Shohei Ryu and Kobudo, but also in Kung Fu styles such as Five ancestors, Shaolin nam pai chuan, Fuijan white crane, Tiger crane, Pangai noon (Uechi Ryu), Ngo Cho Kun. Its influence is also seen in Emei snake, Dragon style, Hung gar, Tang lang, Goh chor, Lohan boxing, Wing tsun and Jeet Kune Do styles. The influence of the Sanchin kata is seen in many other different styles of martial arts so specific parts of Sanchin kata are inserted in many other katas of different styles. This way parts of the Sanchin kata can be seen in Seisan katas (13 hands), Sesan, Sisochin, Aragaki No Seisan, Jusan, Ken Shin Kan,Noi Khi Cong, Paporen, Suparimpe, Sanseru and Kururunpa kata and its influence can be greatly seen in Shotokan kata Hangetsu (the half moon position of the leg), as well as some Korean styles such as Tang Soo Do and Soo Bahk Do under the name of Sei Shan form. According to some foreknowledge, the master of karate Anko Itosu (1831-1915) is responsible for the insertion of the Sanchin kata into other karate katas. In order to minimize the Chinese influence, he wanted the Karate katas to have a Japanese name. Sanchin is a kata that is primarily used to exercize the correct breathing technique and, with the help of certain martial arts and defensive techniques, the correct contraction of musculature.Technically speaking, it is very simple, but to correctly learn and use its elements is truly difficult. One of the reasons lies in the fact that, while performing the kata in karate, its movements are performed in complete tension (isometric training). A person that is very patient and persistent can correctly perform the kata and this is the reason why some younger gymnasts avoid it, not having enough patience for it. For them the kata seems too slow and not active enough, without high foot punches, without jumps, without fast movements or certain gymnastic elements. We can simply say that they do not understand the elementary purpose of the performance of the kata. The fact that the Sanchin kata used to be performed on Okinawa in a period from 18 months until up to two years says enough about its importance. Today, it is learnt for about four months and sometimes even a lot shorter. This is the reason why its performance is often incorrect. The basic elements that we gain by exercizing the Sanchin kata are a correct and firm posture, correct movements by maintaining excellent balance, a good contraction and release as well as a perfect synchronization of the musculature, an excellent breathing control and a special exercize for mental concentration. The Sanchin kata is, simply said, firstly done as a breathing exercize, but its performance and technique vary according to the style of use. Having this in mind, it can be noticed how karate practitioners, while performing a foot stance, place the front foot slightly bent towards inside and the whole stance is not too wide in order to maintain balance. Also, the weight of the practitioner is evenly distributed on both legs. This particular stance is called Sanchin Dachi, i.e. Sanchin stance. In various Kung Fu styles this foot positioning is more widely placed, i.e. while performing the kata the step is wider and the posture of the practitioner seems softer and more relaxed. The front leg is not so bent towards inside and its centre of gravity, i.e. the body's mass is placed more towards the toes. In all Kung Fu styles, the kata is significantly longer than in Karate styles. The reason for this lies in the fact that the Sanchin kata is in Karate divided into two parts- under the name Sanchin it is performed as one part of a kata, while the other part of the kata is performed under the name Tensho kata. Just like Sanchin kata, Tensho kata is basically a breathing kata. However, if we were to follow the historical development of the Sanchin kata, we would discover how the Tensho kata is its certain continuation, i.e. they are both a part of one kata which were, as time passed by, divided into two parts and are performed under two different names. Because of this, some masters of karate used to

“The basic elements that we gain by exercizing the Sanchin kata are a correct and firm posture, correct movements by maintaining excellent balance, a good contraction and release as well as a perfect synchronization of the musculature, an excellent breathing control and a special exercize for mental concentration.

Karate Do connect these two katas while performing them, such as the famous master of the Goyu Ryu style Gogen “The Cat“ Yamaguchi (1909 - 1989). The Sanchin kata is in almost all styles of Kung Fu performed with opened palms, while in various Karate styles this kata is performed with clenched fists (closed fist). An exemption is the Uechi Ryu style in which the kata is performed with opened palms called Nukite - Zuki (open spear hand). Although certain variations in the performance of the kata in Karate as well as some Kung Fu styles exists, it is confirmed that it was originally performed with opened palms (open spear hand). There is also the fact that the old statues of guardians of Buddhist monasteries show one of their hand opened while the other is closed into a fist. Also, the breathing technique while performing the kata varies across styles. In Karate the breathing is deeper, slower and oriented towards the abdomen (Ibuki), while in Kung Fu styles the breathing is much faster and more shallow. Certain deviations in the breathing technique exist the same way as in Karate styles and Kung Fu styles. Also, minor but also visible variations in breathing techniques exist even among masters of a certain style which depends on the person. Every master will alter a certain style and breathing technique to his own needs. The basic technique (bunkai) found in Sanchin kata, i.e. the specific technique of blocking and performing punches is almost identical in all styles. Although some blocks or some postures may vary, it is basically the same technique which is performed in a bit modified way. Of course, this depends on the style. When blocking the opponent's punches, circular blocks are primarily used (Va – uke). Whether there are smaller or bigger deviations from the basic technique, which greatly depends on the style, a mindful observer will immediately realize that it is the same technique and the same kata – Sanchin kata. According to some folk tales the master Kanryo Higashionna (1853-1915) transmitted the knowledge about the Sanchin kata as well as its practice in various stlyes of Karate in Japan. He also transmitted the Sanchin kata from China to Okinawa although people knew about some of its exercizes much earlier. Today even two variations of the Sanchin kata are performed in the Goyu Ryu style of Karate. The first one is Sanchin Dai Ni (created by Higashionna) and the second one is Sanchin Dai Ichi (created by Miyagi). The Sanchin kata is so important in the practice of martial arts that some of the greatest masters emphasized its importance and the need to exercize it regularly. Among a great number of masters the ones that need to be highlighted are certainly master Gogen “The Cat“ Yamaguci, Kanei Uechi (1911 - 1991), Masutatsu Oyama (1923 - 1994), Morio Higaonna, Tatsuo Shimabuku, Goshi Yamaguchi and many more. One of the most famous Karate masters, Choyun Miyagi (1888 – 1953), a master of the Goju Ryu style, often talked how the Sanchin kata should be practiced thirty times in one day, emphasizing its importance for the human body. The significance and the impact of the Sanchin kata on the body was recognized long agoHowever, a group of masters of the Isshin Ryu style headed by dr. Kevin Seufert have carried out a research in the Navy Hospital sports medicine clinic in Pendleton about its effect on the human body in 1997. While performing the kata supervised by the Karate master Norm Losier and measuring their pulses, blood pressure and running an ECG, they came to the conclusion that the kata doesn't have any harmful effects of the health, but they haven't found out how beneficial it really is for the body. Although this research is

praiseworthy, it didn't show us how important is the transport of oxygen to the human body and how important is its transmission through blood and its supply to the muscles. Also, it didn't reveal how big is the impact of the kata on the internal organs, how much it improves the lung capacity, the growth of mental abilities and certain stability of the gymnast. The research didn't snow how the practice effects the proper contraction and relaxation of the musculature, in what amount is it connected with the so- called Ki (Chi) bodily energy as well as many more unanswered questions. Whether we possess certain awareness that the Sanchin kata, as an exercize, influenced the development of the famous Chinese skill Tai Chi, especially the Sun style, then we can assume that the kata has a great therapeutic value. Although the connection among various styles of Kung Fu and Karate are known from the early beginnings of exercize, an event called Budosai held in Great Britain in 2007 united four masters of different style of Karate and Kung Fu and looked at their performance of the Sanchin kata. Those were masters Pan Yong Chun, a master of the White crane style, Chien Jian Feng, a master of the Wu Shu Guan style, Shinyu Gushi, a master of the Uechi Ryu (Pangai Noon) style and Morio Higaonna, a master of the Goyu Ryu style of martial arts. Also, a certain link between the Sanchin kata as well as its impact on various Karate and Kung Fu styles was explored by

numerous masters such as Alexander L. Cho (connects the Sanchin kata with the style of Karate and Kung Fu), George Alexander (examines the origins of the Sanchin kata), Mike Cross (investigates the Sanchin kata in Karate practices), David M. Kahn and Richard Baptista (Sanchin kata and Uechi Ryu Karate), Pervez B. Mistry (explores the history and influence of the kata on the human body), Kris Wilder (looks into the history of the kata) Iain Abernethy (refers to the link between the performance of the kata in Karate and Kung Fu), as well as many other masters. The Sanchin kata can be practiced in different ways, which depends on the style and the skill, i.e. mastership of the gymnast who performs it. There are gymnasts who perform the kata by wearing metal bracelets around their hands, by holding weighs, by tieing their hands alongside their body, by practicing it on the snow during Winter or on the sand during Summer. Parts of the kata can be performed in a way that gymnasts hold certain weighs, jars or a heavy object in their hands (for example, a big rock). The kata may be performed under a waterfall which has a unique effect on concentration and the breathing technique. Also, the kata may be practiced so that the gymnast is immersed into water neck- high (in the sea, river or a pool). The water can be of a different temperature, depending on the gymnasts's wish and ability, spanning from very cold to lukewarm. It can be often seen in various Karate style how the gymnast is tested in a specific way while performing the Sanchin kata. An instructor may stand near the gymnast and check the firmness of his posture, the correct muscle tone, his correct breathing and movement. The older master- instructor tests the gymnast in a way that he hits his body (Shime) on certain places and in a certain way as well as checks his muscle tone by a certain touch. A similar testing can be found in some styles of Kung Fu called Chi Kong. Unfortunately, some gymnasts exaggerate with this test and

Karate Do this type of checking, thinking that the gymnast who can bear the strongest hits is the best practitioner of the kata. There is no special reason for this because this may or may not be the case in practicing the Sanchin kata. Every gymnast can, according to his wish, test his own performance of the kata. The only important thing is that the kata is practices correctly. The Sanchin kata can be, as opposed to some other katas, exercized from a very young to a very old age in life. We can say that there is no famous master of any style of martial arts that hasn't entirely practiced the kata or some of its parts or that he is not aware of the existence of the Sanchin kata. Famous examples are Gichin Funakoshi (1868 1957), Morihei Uyeshiba (1983 - 1969), Ip Man (1893 - 1972) etc. Some parts of the Sanchin kata can be seen in various movies and in different techniques performed by Bruce Lee (1940 - 1973), Jackie Chan, Jeann – Claude Van Damme (Jean –Claude C. F. van Varenberg), etc. As much as we think that we know a lot about the Sanchin kata today or that we have found out all of its secrets, the truth is entirely different. Every man who lightly and not thoroughly practices the Sanchin kata will now perceive all of its beauty as well as the importance of its exercize. If we perform the kata incorrectly, its effectiveness will be absent. This is why many gymnasts ask themselves whether the Sanchin kata is harmful for their health. – No, it is not. Is it beneficial? – Yes, it certainly is. In what amount? – Unfortunately, it is still not entirely known, but constant research finds out more and more about it. As soon as you have started thinking about correct breathing as well as its importance for your body, you have already profited. This is exactly why the Sanchin kata is the basis for all the other katas. David „Sensei“ Stainko Prof.of kinesiology 7th dan MMS (mixed martial scientists)

Keysi

To d a y I h a v e t h e p r i v i l e g e o f addressing you from the Keysi academy in Puerto Sagunto, Valencia, Spain. This small academy is the analysis and development training center of this Spanish urban growth and self-defense method, led by a team of great professionals who are dedicated body and soul to a constant research and study, making mistakes a thousand times if necessary until reaching the sought result, but without stopping to question it. I have the honor and the immense pleasure of intr oducing you to two of the closer and most dedicated people to the development of this method: Jessica DiĂŠguez and Bogdan Suciu, both Master Instructor. This academy is not only a training place, it's the K e y s i Wo r d h e a d q u a r t e r s , t h e epicenter, the first school of the Keysi method.

Justo DiĂŠguez

Keysi n September 9th we taught a three-hour workshop, with participants from all over Spain and Europe, where special emphasis was placed on the workout and development of distances, as well as an analysis of space / time. Space is the distance between one or several opponents in relation to our position and it indicates us the way we are going to act. Time is the speed with which our response will reach our opponents, a response that entails in its application three different times, namely, the "before", the "during" and the "after" of a possible attack. As in every workshop, it came out a series of questions that I found quite interesting and I'm sure many of our readers are wondering about.

O

Why Keysi? Keysi has a different goal, since it really represents a way of understanding the street. But to reach this conclusion we must first analyze the human being. Keysi is the Spanish art of personal growth that is being recognized throughout the world as one of the most powerful and functional methods of self-defense and not for the success achieved in Hollywood (Batman, Jack Reacher, Game of Thrones, Mission Impossible, etc.). Keysi is not a system or a sport; streets have no rules and we all know that the street is not a sport. The consequence of that growth and recognition of oneself results in a perspective of the situation somewhat different. Keysi is a method in which the student learns to recognize his or her natural tools and adapts them to his or her specific needs. The principles in Keysi are the development of the person in four cycles: physical, mental, emotional and the inner recognition of the "I". For that we must not only acknowledge our physical skills, but also our non-physical, mental and emotional abilities.

I've practiced a different Martial Art all my life, so why should I do Keysi? Keysi will open new doors for you to understand the street and defend yourself in a real risk situation. It will enrich your knowledge and will expand your perception of the environment. With the development of body mechanics, you learn to read and understand your opponents. Keysi gives you the ability of understanding the distances you can use, and of course, it also develops your awareness and strength. Keysi was designed to be effective and to be used independently of the person's age or physical skills. All the techniques in Keysi are used as a bridge to reach their real goal, which is that of realizing that you are the tool, as well as understanding the way you must use such tool to achieve a proper action-reaction in a risk situation in real life. Keysi will open the doors of your subconscious, which will change your way of seeing a dangerous situation, be it against one or more adversaries, and, what is more important, it will make you

Justo Diéguez “Keysi is a method in which the student learns to recognize his or her natural tools and adapts them to his or her specific needs. For that we must not only acknowledge our physical skills, but also our nonphysical, mental and emotional abilities.”

Justo DiĂŠguez acknowledge, understand and connect with your true potential.

Is Keysi just choreographies for Hollywood? Keysi's value was recognized and used in the entertainment industry because it is real and effective, new and innovative and, surprisingly, many Martial Arts practitioners who have tried it, have recognized that they had never studied a Martial Art like Keysi, which covers every area in the understanding of street self-defense. The principles of Keysi and its simplicity have been adapted to the film industry, and this is another key point that is important in Keysi: it adapts to the needs of action independently of the genre. And the fact of reaching the film industry is another sign of the powerful effect Keysi has on real life.

Is Keysi considered to be brutal? Well, unfortunately the street itself is a brutal environment, without rules and without mercy in risky situations; misunderstandings, illusions and fantasies in a real situation are not forgiven. Through Keysi you will discover unknown parts of yourself; you will understand and discover that brutality has roots in the subconscious of every human being. The more you understand the brutality and reality of the streets, the more you will understand the value of the Keysi method and the advantages accruing from its practice.

“The principles of Keysi and its simplicity have been adapted to the film industry, and this is another key point that is important in Keysi: it adapts to the needs of action independently of the genre.

Kyusho Jitsu is not an Art in itself but an advanced part of each Martial Art; the principles that Grandmaster Mark Kline specifies in these 2 videos will certainly help you increase the effectiveness of your martial discipline. Master Kline's apprenticeship with teachers such as George Dillman, Wally Jay and Remy Presas, among others, was immeasurable for his understanding of selfdefense with or without weapons, through the strategies and concepts that he has coded in order to help us increase our efficiency, regardless of the style or training time. The PinPoint ÂŽ method is a strategic and tactical pressure points methodology, easy to learn and quick to implement. The 2 DVDs that make up this first work, present the 10 steps that will increase the effectiveness of any Martial Art: DVD # 1: Controlling the center, Controlling the Center of your Opponent, Body movement, Body alignment, the Principle of Opposites and Multiple planes of movement. DVD # 2: Anatomical Intuition, Transitions, Yin and Yang, Pressure Points / Anatomic Goals.

In this new DVD of Vovinam, Patrick Levet has wanted to show the facets of the use and handling of the Vietnamese Stick. Although little known, the Vietnamese long stick is, without a doubt, the most important weapon among all the weapons of the traditional Martial Arts of Vietnam. The Vovinam school, in its official program, only proposes the Stick Form (Tu Tuong Con Phap) and the counterattacks of stick vs. stick (Phan Don), without explaining the intermediate movements. But the Vietnamese stick goes far beyond these two facets and Master Levet offers us 2 detailed DVDs on all the applications of the numerous intermediate movements of the Stick Quyen. In this second volume, Levet executes the Quyen Tu Tuong Con Phap, and explains in detail the Phan Don counterattacks 1-12, and the 39 techniques and applications contained in the form, including those for intermediate moves. An original work that shows for the first time the Vietnamese stick in a complete and exhaustive way.

We are pleased to present the second work of the KMRED group. This video bearing the name "Concept and Education" aims to make you discover a part of the concept Krav Maga Research, Evolution and Development, as well as the pedagogy developed within our group. The different exercises that you will discover here are not intended to "feast your eyes" or demonstrate our combative attitudes, because our priority here is that of explaining how we prepare our students so that they become "warriors", capable of "adapting" to the different evolutions of street fighting.
