Elysian Fields Forever

Elysian Fields Forever In early October, the Brother Martin community gathered on campus for Elysian Fields Forever...Let The Good Times Roll, presented by Hancock Whitney. The event welcomed more than 700 guests, including parents, friends, Alumni of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin, as well as faculty and staff, making it Brother Martin’s largest annual fundraiser.

Guests were transported to Las Vegas, where they experienced live gaming, the “Elysian Fields Experience,” and “Barry’s Palace.” The evening began with the patron party, where guests enjoyed delicious food prepared by Pigéon Catering and Events and Dean Pigeon ’06, Copelands, Erin Caruso and Beverly Napier, Haydel’s Bakery, and Brother Martin’s own Culinary Crusaders. Following the patron party, the main event began with President Greg Rando ’77 welcoming and thanking guests for their support.

Guests enjoyed blackjack, craps, and roulette at the gaming tables, and a selection of silent auction items was open for bidding. Several raffles, including the “$5,000 Cash Raffle,”“50/50,”“Blanton’s Bourbon Raffle,” were a huge hit along with the speciality cups and cocktails. Mark Romig ’74 served as Master of Ceremony.

Guests enjoyed music by the Crusader Stage Band, followed by the Peyton Falgoust Band. Auction sponsors and donors were recognized throughout the night and on our auction website. The festivities concluded with Director of Advancement Kenny Spellman ’84 thanking guests and the committee.

Events, shared stories, and welcomed Brother Ronnie. The 2023 Alumnus of the Year, The Honorable Kurt D. Engelhardt ’78, officially welcomed his classmate and longtime friend to the group with a toast. The Alumnus of the Year Mass and Luncheon will be held on March 7th and 8th, 2026.

2025 Golf Classic The 2025 Brother Martin Golf Classic featured two tournaments at Bayou Oaks South Course at City Park in mid-June. The Morning Tournament teed off at 8 a.m., was rain-shortened, but golfers enjoyed food and beverages. Mark Benedetto ’77 with Caffé Latte Da!, and Mr. Ed’s provided delicious food selections. Lunch, featuring burgers and chicken compliments of the Class of 1974 Cooking Team, was served as awards and raffle prizes were announced. Players enjoyed grilled oysters provided by Barry Albarado ’95 and Crescent Seafood & Catering, Mat Lepetich ’95 and MATO’s and were served by “Sarge” and Pigeon Catering & Events. Scot Craig ’80 with Katies, Bear’s Po-boys, The Ladies of the Shield, Seven Three Distilling, and Ralph Freibert ’82 with Planning Associates Wealth Management, LLC ensured that everyone had sufficient food and drinks on the course. Attendees participated in a “Putting Contest,” 50/50 winners were announced, several raffle items were distributed, and the champions took photos in their Crimson Jackets. Pickleball Tournament The Brother Martin Pickleball Tournament took place in early June at Chateau Golf & Country Club. Players were rewarded with delicious food, cold drinks, and beautiful weather. Ryan Romaguera ’92 directed the tournament, while DJ Bryce Barbaro ’17 kept the crowd entertained.

2025 Miracle League Brother Martin High School was honored to host the 14th annual Miracle League “All-Star” Weekend to benefit the Miracle League of GNO in late May. The event included a baseball clinic and split-squad game on Farley Field for Miracle League participants to enjoy spirited competition alongside student-athletes from Brother Martin’s baseball and football teams as they were cheered on by our National Championship Cheer Team.

2025 Fishing Rodeo The 26th annual Fishing Rodeo took place in midJune in the Backyard at school. It was a beautiful, warm day for Alumni, families, and friends of Brother Martin as participants competed for various titles in 15 categories.

The Captain’s Party, held at the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office, kicked off the event on Wednesday. Fishermen and their guests were able to register while enjoying complimentary sandwiches, beverages, and fishing tips.

On Saturday, Eddie Gonzales ’77 served as the emcee and entertained the crowd with music as younger fishermen were able to cool off on our water slide. The Schmidt Family Cooking Team provided delicious fried fish, burgers, hotdogs, and fries. The Bean Sprouts featuring Noah Dobson ’27 entertained the crowd.

“Phinns and Pheathers I” took home 1st place in the coveted 5-Trout Stringer category. The team of Guy Valvis ’73, Kevin Baldridge, Connor Duchmann, Connor Prigmore, and Kaleb Baldridge, “Team Dry Dock,“ “Halibuts,“ “Salt Water Mafia,“ ”Catchin-A-Buzz,“ “SNAFU,“ “The Art Street Crumbs,“ “Anchors” and “Mr. Clean” were also 1st place winners in different categories.

Trivia Night XX

The Advancement and Alumni Relations Office hosted The Joel Maumus ’92 Memorial Trivia Night XX in early August. The Gayle and Tom Benson ’44 Mall was filled with 18 teams vying for the Trivia Night XX Championship. James Maumus ’89 of Challenge Entertainment and Live Trivia returned to campus to host this widely-popular event. Everyone enjoyed crispitos, pizza, and cold beverages provided by Brother Martin Food Service.

In late May, the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office hosted the first Crusader Neighborhood Social, beginning a series of events highlighting and supporting locally owned Crusader businesses. The event was held at Bayou Daiquiris & Bar at 7215 Veterans Memorial Boulevard and is owned by Brian Lozes ’04. Members of the Brother Martin Community socialized and enjoyed drinks and complimentary food.

In early October, the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office hosted the Downtown Neighborhood Social at Welty’s Deli and Catering, 201 St. Charles Avenue. Marcel Farnet ’51 SA and Donald Howertown ’51 SA Alumni and guests gathered in early September for the annual Plus 50 Mass and Reunion at Brother Martin High School. This special evening included Reunion festivities for Alumni of 51 years or more from St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin High School.

Steve Mallerich ’72, who lives in Fiji, as well as attendees from the earliest class, Marcel Farnet and Donald Howerton, St. Aloysius Class of 1951. At the reception, Alumni and guests enjoyed a delicious meal prepared and served by the Brother Martin Culinary Crusaders.

Baseball Trip Members of the Brother Martin community traveled to Boston for the annual Baseball Trip this past July. More than 50 members attended two Red Sox games, toured the Samuel Adams Brewery, walked the Freedom Trail, and took the South Boston Foodie Tour. Ladies of the Shield Fall Coffee Social The Ladies of the Shield hosted their annual Crusader Mom Coffee Social in early September in the Brother Mark Thornton, S.C. Terrace. Attendees enjoyed coffee provided by French Market and Café du Monde, along with other treats, while mingling and conversing with new and returning Crusader moms, Brother Martin faculty and staff, and administration.

Wrestling Celebration The Brother Martin Wrestling community gathered at Bayou Beer Garden in late August.

Career Day

Career Day 2025 welcomed Alumni back to campus to speak with current students and share insights into their respective fields, their experiences on the path to where they are today, and any wisdom they have gleaned along the way. Students

selected from sessions presented by over 70 professionals to learn what it’s really like to work in the fields most interesting to them. Taking place across our campus, these sessions provided students with an opportunity to ask questions

Grandparent Days The Advancement and Alumni Relations Office hosted Grandparent Days during the first quarter of the school year. Grandparents were treated to lunch during their grandsons’ unstructured periods.

They were able to visit with some of their grandsons’ friends and teachers, purchase items from the Bookstore, and take pictures together. Brother Martin “give-aways” were available and volunteer Moms ensured a successful experience.

The team shared some exciting updates about the company’s growth and what’s next for the company. Professionally, personally, spiritually, and I think even emotionally, Ivy LeBlanc spent his adult life trying to teach us all right from wrong and certainly weak from strong so that the mission he was so devoted to – the formation of our young people – could be met. And we’re doing it better because of him.

When I first met Brother Ivy, he was one of the most intimidating men I had ever encountered.

And then I got to know him… Brother Ivy modeled his entire life and every decision he made with the heart of Jesus in mind. He was kind, compassionate, and, yes, extremely demanding, because he ultimately wanted what was best for the students, faculty, and staff in his care. Brother Ivy, alongside Jerry Reso ’55, designed a business model that ensures the educational charism and spirit of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart will remain alive and well at Brother Martin High School for years to come.

The news of Br. Ivy LeBlanc’s passing has brought many moving testimonies and wonderful memories of this special leader. There’s no doubt he was an incredible organizer and visionary for the community, but to me, he was simply a brother, almost a father figure. For nearly 15 years, I lived with Ivy, mostly at our City Park house. He was a down-to-earth person, a die-hard Yankee baseball and Duke basketball fan who avoided watching the news. He learned to cook over the years and became quite good at it. Ivy was a deeply spiritual and intelligent person who could connect with anyone on any level. He was just as comfortable with bishops and politicians as he was with a teenager or a garbage collector on the street. I’ll also remember him as a devoted health nut who ran marathons and never missed a workout. So while many will remember him as a great leader, I’ll remember him as a friend, a brother in every sense of the word.

Brother Ivy LeBlanc, S.C. Like most students, I did not know Brother Ivy while I attended Brother Martin High School. Sure, I knew who he was. And at that time, since he was the disciplinarian, there was nothing good that could come from the words “see Brother Ivy”.

Seeing him walk across the Mall, or at a football game, or in the Resource Center only reminded a boy to sit straight, be quiet and get to work.

He seemed impersonal, overbearing and even threatening to a point. The unmistakable sense of gravity emitted from his presence.

I think he wanted it that way. Teenage boys, such as they were and are still, are admittedly wired for fun, mischief, disobedience, foolishness and frolicking. The metamorphosis from preteen to young man is like a mighty river, pushing on and against the banks, hard to control with levees and dams, furiously moving always toward a destination much different than the quick rapids at the source. Someone who doesn’t know this would react differently. But Brother Ivy knew it well. He knew the joy, the pain, the confusion, the challenges and the hearts of young men. He knew what we longed to become, even before we had that figured out. He knew what kind of men we needed to be in this world, and what it would take for us to become that man. A Brother Martin man.

His attempt to hold us accountable and responsible involved discipline, sometimes considered unduly harsh. I’m sure some parents wondered if such punishment was justified or appropriate. But Brother Ivy was not softened by what others thought, because he knew his mission well, and would meet his goal. He knew the ingredients and recipe; he was sure of the final product. Brother Ivy set high standards; he expected them to be met by each boy, every day.

There’s no doubt this smart, capable energetic man could be successful in any other walk of life. If Brother Ivy had become a lawyer, doctor, accountant or business owner, he would have been amazingly successful and very wealthy. Had he gone in to private business, his drive and commitment, combined with his

personal discipline and discretion, would be an overwhelming force. But he chose this piece of land, on Elysian Fields Avenue, to toil, forgoing riches and a very comfortable life style. It is these buildings - the Mall, the Resource Center, the gym and the old Farley’s property - where he chose to root himself and make his world…..and prepare young men like me to thrive in everyone else’s world.

Why did Brother Ivy sometimes pop in to my mind, over the years after graduation, seemingly for no reason? Since I didn’t know him hardly at all as a student, what was the reason his image was unexpectedly present at certain times? Where, in the dark recesses, had I stored his avatar? The answer: he is among the giant figures in my life that I never wanted to disappoint. He was order and stability and safety. He reminds me of being accountable, of being respectful of those around me, of Christian spirituality. Of being the best son, husband and father possible. Of being a man – no, a gentleman – all the qualities he demonstrated to us by example.

In 2023, I was honored and humbled to be named Brother Martin Alumnus of the Year.

Brother Ivy was at each event. But contrary to my student memories, he was warm, friendly, most gracious, smiling and happy, and (dare I say) like a compassionate father. In some ways, it was as though I met him anew, yet he was so familiar and transcended decades. For me, it was a renewal of a relationship, on different, more mutual plane, like a marvelous old friend. I could tell he was proud, not just of me, but of my representation of what he wanted us all to become. He was happy that his efforts had created not just a federal judge, but a man in the image he wanted. And there are thousands like me, Brother Martin grads who went forth in to the world, bearing his valued seal of approval. This was his reward; this was his treasure.

any of us knew about him. He also knew that love sometimes, most of the time, was the opposite of coddling and sharing sympathy. He could have defended a student, forgiven a student, “let a guy off easy”, so to speak. But he knew that is not what makes a man. He demanded accountability to Brother Martin, to your family, your classmates and to yourself. He instilled it in each boy so that, by graduation, it didn’t have to imposed externally.

It became innate. He expected a man to take responsibility for himself and for others, and be a leader. That would not have happened if he had treated us with “kid gloves”, forgiving or indulging every transgression big or small. He wasn’t giving us what we needed then; he was giving us what we would need 20 or 30 or 40 years from then. He treated us not like boys, but rather like the men he wanted us to become. And that was the right thing to do.

Likewise, he also inspired spirituality. While we were the awkward, unruly boys who entered Brother Martin as young teenagers, he gently but firmly instilled Christian values, strong morals, and a commitment to Jesus Christ, because he knew each one us, individually, would need to be equipped with that foundation on which everything else would rest. He lived it, he taught it, he was an exemplar of it.

And so now grief comes to inhabit our hearts. We will miss him, but not what he has done, because it remains here every day, strong as his gracious presence. I know God now cradles Brother Ivy in His loving arms this day, for he has done God’s work during his life here with us. We celebrate his contributions to our beloved Brother Martin, and his love for the men from Brother Martin. And we will not let him down.

Giving Back Scholarship/Endowment TOM & TONI CAUSIN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP - Endowed The Tom & Toni Causin Family Scholarship has been endowed in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation (SACF).

The funds were received as a result of a planned gift and our Society of 1869.

This is a need-based scholarship, with no specific criteria for recipients. The Causin Family legacy at Brother Martin includes Sara and Trey ’89, Lisa and Philip ’95, and Trey’s sons Jackson ’23 and Jaeger ’28.

BROTHER IVY LE BLANC SCHOLARSHIP - Endowed The Brother Ivy LeBlanc, S.C. Scholarship has been endowed in the SACF. Gene Ferniz ’71 and his wife, Mary Jean Emerson, made the gift. This is a need-based scholarship, and the criteria for recipients is that they are in good standing at Brother Martin High School.

ST. ALOYSIUS LAST CLASS 1969 SCHOLARSHIP - Endowed The St. Aloysius Last Class 1969 Scholarship has been endowed in the SACF. Frank Janusa ’69 SA organized the campaign. The criteria for recipients will be decided by contributing members of the class.

DANIEL S. CANTRELL ’90 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Endowed The Daniel S. Cantrell ‘90 Memorial Scholarship has been endowed in the SACF. Cynthia Cantrell made the gift. This is a need-based scholarship. The criteria for recipients is that they are in good standing at Brother Martin High School. Preferences include that the recipients focus on volunteering, maintain a 3.0 G.P.A., and are “like that kid who maybe isn’t easily seen as the obvious choice”.

BATTLE FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Endowed The Battle Family Scholarship has been endowed in the SACF. Mary Sue and Clarke Battle ’65 CJ made the gift. This is a need-based scholarship, and the criteria for recipients is that they are in good standing at Brother Martin High School.

MR. DONALD P. PREAU ’68 SA SCHOLARSHIP - Established The Mr. Donald P. Preau ’68 SA Scholarship has been established in the SACF. Gifts from Dennis Preau, DDS ’77 and the Estate of Donald Preau established the scholarship.

LARRY D. GARVEY ’55 SA PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP Will Havnen ’29, the recipient of the Larry D. Garvey Presidential Scholarship, visited Marge and Don Garvey ’50 SA recently. Will was most impressed that his mom’s uncle Don actually knew Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C., himself and had him as a principal. Unfortunately, Mr. Garvey passed this past September.

EDMOND M. D’HEMECOURT, JR. ’64 CJ MEMORIAL AWARD Jacob S. Gustin ’26 received the 2025-2026 Edmond M. d’Hemecourt, Jr. ’64 CJ Memorial Award. Jacob received this award by demonstrating a love for his faith and his school while living a life of service to the Church, school, and community.

Ed d’Hemecourt III ’87 created this award to honor his father, Edmond “Eddie” d’Hemecourt, Jr. ’64 CJ. Edmond, Jr. had a deep affection for his alma mater. During his time at CJ, he was actively involved in various clubs and activities, including Key Club, Borromeo Club, and Senior Confraternity of the Sacred Heart. Eddie’s time as an altar server and member of the CYO at St. Francis Cabrini Parish strengthened his faith, and he continued his vocation to the Catholic Church throughout his life. As a parishioner of St. Rita Catholic Church, he served his parish as a Eucharistic Minister, specifically for the sick and homebound. Additionally, he served on the parish finance board for many years, which included the annual Pecan Fest.

Memorabilia Paul G. Verdigets ’66 SA donated his clarinet to the Crusader Band as well as St. Aloysius Band Letters to the Alumni archives.

Mike Jones ’71 donated his Cor Jesu Golf lettermen jacket and sweater.

He was a member of the 1969 Cor Jesu Golf State Championship team. Team members received lettermen jackets to honor their achievement.

Cor Jesu High School competed in intramurals and as an independent school in athletics from 1957 to 1968. In 1968, they joined the Catholic League and became eligible for league, city, and state championships. They won the Golf State Championship in their only year of competing for state titles.

Society of 1869 Armand Bertin ’59 CJ has named Brother Martin High School as a beneficiary in a planned gift. Armand taught and coached at Cor Jesu and has assisted in planning his class reunions over the years. He serves on the Plus 50 Committee, is a member of the Crimson & Gold Network, and served on the Cor Jesu Hall Committee. His legacy at Brother Martin includes his son Armand, Jr. ’86, and his grandsons Josh Montgomery ’13 and Ethan Montgomery ’20.

Kevin Camarata ’77 has named Brother Martin as a beneficiary in a planned gift. Kevin is the Chief Executive Officer at Camarata Masonry Systems, located in Houston. Kevin has endowed the Kevin M. Camarata ’77 Family Scholarship in the SACF. Kevin worked on-site during the construction of the Ridgley Center and has been a generous donor over the years. He has participated in and/or sponsored Brother Martin’s Golf Tournament, Fishing Rodeo, and Tennis Tournament. Camarata Masonry Systems has also generously installed signage around campus.

Jim Eberle ’84 is the newest member of the Society of 1869. Jim remains involved with Brother Martin by attending class reunions and our Baseball Trips.

LEGACY NIGHT

In late September, Brother Martin held its 2025 Crusader Discovery Day for 5th-8th grade prospective students to discover what it means to be a Crusader and join the Crusader Brotherhood. Prospects enjoyed a hearty breakfast, interactive games at various campus locations, a warm welcome from the Assistant Principal for Admissions, Carlos Bogran III ’99. Students toured campus and participated in activities designed to showcase the Brother Martin experience: engaging science demos in the Meyer Building, an Extracurricular Club Fair in the First Floor Resource Center, meet-and-greets with athletic teams and coaches, and first-hand testimonies from current students. The fun culminated in an energetic Discovery Day Pep Rally in Conlin Gym, featuring performances by the Crusader Band, appearances by the Brother Martin Cheerleaders, and lively relay games led by our Student Council.

SUMMER CAMP

The 2025 Summer Campers participated in academic games, basketball, outdoor wilderness, robotics, and track and field. Donnie Midkiff ’03, Camp Director, and his staff led field trips, meals, and other activities. Athletic speciality camps included baseball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, and wrestling.

Crusader families were welcomed home to Elysian Fields Avenue for our 12th annual Legacy Night in mid-September. This memorable night provided Alumni the opportunity to share their own memories of the Crusader Brotherhood with sons and loved ones, making it a special evening of connection across generations. Campus News Academics Logan Drouet ’26 has been honored as a National Merit Semifinalist. Logan has been recognized for his Academic Excellence and achievement on the PSAT exam. Logan is one of the 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, less than 1% of high school seniors, who will continue to compete for a National Merit Scholarship.

NATIONAL AP SCHOLARS 100% of eligible Brother Martin AP students from the classes of 2025 and 2026 earned national AP Scholar Recognition. To qualify for this honor, students must score a 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Twelve students are AP Scholars, fourteen are AP Scholars with Honor, and twenty-one are AP Scholars with Distinction. TEST PREP Brother Martin High School’s test prep program is designed to prepare students for the Pre-ACT, ACT, and PSAT exams. Spearheaded by Assistant Principal for Academics, Michael Lynn ’04, Brother Martin kicked off its first of ten standardized test preparation courses last week. This preparation and hard work in the pursuit of Academic Excellence culminated in our fall testing day on October 30, 2025. Students will participate in ten more sessions during the spring semester before spring standardized testing.

Campus News Campus FOUNDATION DAY LITURGY The Brother Martin High School community gathered in the Conlin Gym to participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Foundation Day Mass on September 30th in celebration of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Our school community joined some international Brothers’ schools in celebration. Fr. Tony Rigoli presided over the liturgy. Special guests included members of our community who have made impactful gifts to Brother Martin High School either financially or through volunteerism or other acts of kindness.

ALL SAINTS DAY LITURGY In early November, Brother Martin High School celebrated the Solemnity of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day. The morning began with Mass in the Conlin Gym, which Fr. Tony Rigoli, OMI, celebrated.

CHAMPIONS OF OUR COAST Brother Martin High School has been named a “Champion of Our Coast” and Coastal Stewardship Award winner by the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana.

COLLEGE DAY

Brother Martin High School was pleased to welcome representatives from over 30 colleges and universities to share higher education insights as well as application processes in the name of Academic Excellence in the Conlin Gym. Students from Ursuline Academy also participated.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT Crusader Parents were welcomed to campus for our “Back to School Night” in late August. Parents visited classrooms, met their children’s teachers, and learned about their courses and the classroom procedures. Parents also visited the John J. Gelpi, Jr. ’52 SA Bookstore in the Tom & Gayle Benson Mall. Representatives from our Advancement and Alumni Relations Office shared “Crusader Parent Experience” and “Elysian Fields Forever” information with our parents.

RING MASS The Brother Martin Class of 2026 took part in their Senior Ring Mass, celebrated by Fr. Tony Rigoli and Fr. Stephen Dufrene, CFR, in late August, at St. Dominic Catholic Church.

RING DANCE Seniors celebrated Ring Dance with their dates in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace in late August. There, they were able to dance, enjoy popular music, and make memories that will last for a long time to come.

1ST QUARTER SENIOR LUNCH

The Advancement and Alumni Relations Office (AARO) treated Seniors to Raising Cane’s before 1st quarter exams. Senior parents donated desserts.

Chris Heine ’03, Director of Alumni Relations, encouraged students to remain focused as they head into test week. Alumni Board member Ryan Bordenave ’94 spoke with seniors. Volunteer parents, Brother Martin Food Services, and members of the AARO Team helped make this senior lunch a success.

We thanked Leo Lowder for 21 years of service, Melanie Williams for 26 years of service, Michael Lemmon for 41 years of service, and Judy Maldonado for 48 years of service.

Brother Martin High School held a spirited Halloween pep rally in the Conlin Gym. Extracurriculars BAND The Brother Martin Crusader Band, Drum Major Ethan Tran ’26, St. Mary’s Dominican Debs, and Dominican Color Guard each earned Superior ratings during the LMEA District VI Marching Band Assessment at Archbishop Shaw High School.

The Crusader Band received Sweepstakes ratings (all superiors), confirming the Crusader Band’s “tradition of excellence.”

CHORUS Toby Alfonso ’27 competed in the Donald W. Wood Sr. Vocal Competition and earned finalist recognition.

Jack Norwood ’27 has been selected as a tenor finalist in the Honors Performance Series, where students from around the country and from abroad submitted solo auditions for consideration. Jack has been invited to perform as a member of the Honors Concert Choir at Carnegie Hall in February of 2026.

He has also been invited to perform in the Honors Concert Choir at the Royal Festival Hall in London in June of 2026.

DIONYSIANS The Brother Martin Dionysians performed “Into the Woods” this past October and November.

KEY CLUB Members of the Brother Martin community contributed to our Key Club’s candy drive for Boo at the Zoo, the annual Halloween fundraiser benefiting Manning Family Children’s Hospital in New Orleans and the Audubon Zoo.

The Mu Alpha Theta Club competed in the Episcopal Math Tournament in Baton Rouge in early October. Robert Kennedy ’28 placed 1st in the Algebra 2 Individual Test.

Students Collin Cancienne ’28 completed his Eagle Scout project by establishing a grotto at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church.

Jacob Gustin ’26 was highlighted by WGNO and Catholic Charities for his service work at Padua House.

Dillan LaFrance ’26 won the 2025 National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) Essay Contest. Dillon was one of eight high-school-aged students who won the 2025 NJTL Essay Contest, which is run by the USTA Foundation and sponsored by Deloitte. The winners, selected from over 400 entries nationwide, traveled to New York City and participated in a variety of events and activities during US Open Fan Week. Dillon is a member of the Crusader Tennis Team and helped the Crusader Tennis Team win the State Championship in 2024.

Caleb Patterson ’26 was selected and played in the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June.

Veteran’s Day

Members of the Brother Martin community gathered on campus for Veterans Day. Mass was celebrated by Fr. David Ducote ’04 in the Branton Chapel in honor of all veterans. Then, the Brother Martin NJRTOC, assisted by the Crusader Band’s accompaniment, raised the colors at the Jacques Fontan ’86 Flagpole outside the chapel. Brother Martin students and faculty, veterans, and guests, including family members of Chief Petty Officer Jacques Fontan ’86, participated in the celebration. Chief Warrant Officer Michael D. Johnson, USN (Ret.), Senior Chief Romico J. Barnes, USN (Ret.), Band Director Dominick Caronna, Jr. ’85, and Assistant Band Director Chris Bailey ’86 organized the event.

Robert Eichhorn CJ, past International Director of Lions Clubs International, has received the Milestone Chevron Award to commemorate and recognize his 50 years of service to the Association.

1964

Terry Manieri SA celebrated the 19th anniversary of his diaconate ordination in 2025.

Henry Singer SA has been named the U.N.O. 2025 Dr. Robert A. Savoie College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.

Henry began his lifelong service with the federal government as a civil engineer trainee with the Corps of Engineers in New Orleans. He moved to Washington, DC, in 1976 to lead safety programs for the Public Buildings Service (PBS) of the General Services Administration (GSA).

Ultimately, he was named Director of Safety, Health, and Fire Protection Engineering, leading the development of nationwide policy and programming.

For his groundbreaking work, he was awarded the GSA Administrator’s Meritorious Service Award three times.

Paul Arrigo, CDME, has been honored with the 2025 Hall of Fame

by Destinations International (DI), the world’s largest membership association for destination organizations. Paul has served the hospitality industry for nearly 50 years and was most recently President/CEO of Visit Baton Rouge from 2002 until his retirement in 2022.

Major Larry Kampa (USAF Ret.) was presented the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for 50 years of Dedicated Service in Aviation Safety. Larry, an Air Force Academy graduate, retired as a Captain from American Airlines in 2010 and remains active in aviation pilot training and maintenance.

Dan Dodt is preparing to sell his Bayview landmark home, on sale for the first time in half a century. The 1865 Sylvester House has attracted awards, accolades, and celebrities over the course of its decades-long, meticulous renovation. The home and Dan’s story are featured in the October 19th issue of The San Francisco Standard.

Michael Begg has been awarded the Grand Prize in the 2025 Faith in Film International Film Festival and Screenwriting Competition for his original screenplay, “The Autumn Paladin." The festival included more than 600 submissions from around the world. He is also a quarterfinalist for the second time in the 2025 Big Break Contest with his “The Autumn Paladin” (Action/Adventure) and “A Modest Proposal” (Period/Historical/War). Mike is one of only six writers with multiple scripts advancing in a field of over 12,000 submissions.

Kevin Camarata, Chief Executive Officer at Camarata Masonry Systems, was inducted into the Texas Masonry Hall of Fame by the Texas Masonry Council. Congressman Pete Sessions presented the award commemorating the event at the Alamo in San Antonio, TX.

Kraig S. de Lanzac, M.D., MBA, FASA, was elected first vice president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the nation’s largest organization of anesthesiologists, on October 15.

The ASA House of Delegates elected Kraig at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2025 annual meeting in San Antonio and will serve for one year. Kraig is director of clinical anesthesia at Tulane Lakeside Hospital and vice chair and associate professor of anesthesiology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

Kent Lambert, a shareholder in Baker Donelson’s New Orleans office, has been named chair of the Logistics, Energy, and Manufacturing Litigation Group.

In early July, the 1983 American Legion team was honored before the start of the State Tournament at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium to celebrate 100 years of American Legion Baseball. The Wendy’s Team (Orleans East Post 367) won the State Championship, the Region 4 Championship, and finished 3rd at the American Legion Baseball in Fargo, North Dakota.

In Memoriam Brother Ivy LeBlanc, S.C., a Brother of the Sacred Heart and a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, since 1972, passed into eternal life at the Hospice and Palliative Care Unit at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson, LA, on Friday, September 26, 2025. Brother Ivy was born Joseph Ivy LeBlanc, Jr., on September 5, 1945, in Baton Rouge, LA, to the late Joseph Ivy LeBlanc, Sr., of Breaux Bridge, LA, and the late Bridget Babin of Dutchtown, LA. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Nancy LeBlanc Guidry (Norman) of Baton Rouge, LA; his blood brother, David LeBlanc; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Elegie and Mae Rees LeBlanc, with whom he was very close.

As a pre-novice, Brother Ivy entered the formation program for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart on August 26, 1967, in Mobile, AL. He became a novice on August 14, 1968, at Belvidere, NJ, and he professed first vows in Metuchen, NJ, on August 15, 1969. His perpetual profession took place in Bay St. Louis, MS, on June 10, 1975, and in 2019, there was a great celebration when Brother Ivy marked the 50th anniversary of his first profession.

Brother Ivy prepared for his years as a professional religious educator by earning three degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from LSU, a Master’s degrees in Educational Administration from Tulane University, and a Master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from Loyola University. During his 31-years in direct school ministry, Brother Ivy prefected at Catholic Boys’ Home in Mobile, AL; taught and prefected at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, MS; and taught at McGill Institute in Mobile, AL. The majority of his educational ministry, however, was spent in New Orleans, LA, on Elysian Fields Ave. at Brother Martin High School. It was there that he served as teacher, Assistant Principal for Discipline, Principal, and President from 1972 until 2000. An icon in the Assistant Principal’s office, Brother Ivy was well respected as a no-nonsense disciplinarian who could balance firmness with compassion. As an administrator, he was a gifted leader who blended a deep appreciation of the past with a creative, visionary eye always looking towards the future. He demanded excellence from everyone, especially himself, and gave his all to provide a quality, Catholic, holistic educational program for all in his charge.

Brother Ivy brought his wisdom and vision to bear on his leadership role in his religious community as well. Within the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, he served as provincial for seven years, provincial councilor to seven provincials, a delegate to every legislative assembly of the Province from 1973 to 2024, a delegate to three general chapters in Rome, and as a member of many province boards. With sound judgment and a background in finances, he functioned as treasurer for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart on both the province and world-wide Institute level. A gifted speaker and zealous promoter of the charism of the founder, Brother Ivy made presentations to groups around the world and mentored future school leaders in it.

A quiet man with a deep spirituality, Brother Ivy managed his job-related stress with practical outlets such as biking, running, working out, and watching sports on TV. (See tribute on pages 22-23)

James Donald Garvey, Sr. ’50 SA, 92 years of age, left this world in September. He was the 2020 Brother Martin High School Alumnus of the Year, he supported Brother Martin student trips to the “March for Life”, and was a proud Crusader Grandparent of Brandon Williams ’18. He will be sorely missed by his loving wife of 25 years, Marge, his family, and many friends.

Oh So Close

By Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ The most victories a Brother Martin football team has ever won in a season was 13 in the state championship year of 1971. The Crusaders won 12 the next year when they fell one game short of another state title. They also won 12 in 1985 when they lost in the semifinals.

This article focuses on the 1985 season.

To start the season, the Crusaders broke a 7-7 tie with 12 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth to secure a 33-7 non-district over South Terrebonne in Houma. QB Kenny Nicolosi ran for 112y on 14 carries, and RB Troy Oddo added 89 on 17 attempts as the Crusaders amassed a whopping 355y on the ground. Martin opened the scoring in the second quarter on a 1y run by Mark Estorge. South Terrebonne tied the game on an 81y pass from QB Kentrelle Harris to Troy Trahan. But Martin marched 71y in nine plays in the third quarter with Jay Rink scoring on an 8y pass from Nicolosi. Before the quarter ended, Nicolosi scored from the 10 after a Gator fumble to complete a 40y drive. The Crusaders added a pair of scores in the final 12 minutes on a 47y run by WR Craig Murphy and a 34y scamper by Chance Miller.

Bob Conlin’s team started faster the next week on their second trip to the Houma area when they scored 14 points in the first quarter and seven in the second on their way to a 34-8 thumping of Terrebonne. The scores came on a 3y run by Estorge and carries of 28 and 7y by Donald Delatte. Murphy scored the fourth touchdown on a 35y pass from QB Garret Chachere. Miller wrapped up the scoring with an 18y run in the fourth quarter. Rod West booted four extra points.

O. Perry Walker upset the Crusaders in 1984, but they were given no chance to win two in a row as Martin wrapped up non-district play with a 21-0 thumping at Pan American Stadium. Coach Chubby Marks’ defense held the Chargers to 20y rushing and intercepted four passes. Rink snagged two of the aerials and returned one 15y for a touchdown early in the second quarter to start the scoring.

When Martin forced a punt, the offense traveled 55y in eight plays with Troy Oddo scoring from 2y out to make it 14-0 with 2:01 left until halftime. The final TD came on a 1y plunge by Estorge to end an 11-play, 80y drive with 3:57 left in the game.

The Crusaders entered district play ranked third in the state. They lived up to that billing with a 41-7 romp over Chalmette at Suarez Stadium. As usual, Martin showcased a stingy defense and a powerful running game. After allowing a touchdown on the Owls’ first possession, the defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way. To the surprise of many, Bob Conlin’s team exhibited an effective passing game. Chachere completed six of eight passes for 129y and three touchdowns, which tied a school record for the most scoring aerials in one game. “We haven’t had to throw in the first three games,” Conlin explained. “Chachere missed a couple of weeks, and we had been kind of rusty throwing the ball. But we worked on passing a lot this week.” Garret combined with Murphy on a 63y score that tied the game at seven. The Crusaders took the lead for good early in the second quarter on a march highlighted by Oddo’s 15 and 21y runs. But it was a pass to TE Jeff Huth that covered the last 5y to put Martin in the lead for good. Late in the second quarter, a mishandled punt recovered by Warde Manuel at the Owl 33 set up Chachere’s third scoring pass, this one to Huth again. Oddo scored twice on runs of 57 and 3y. Finally, Miller’s zipped 14y for the last TD. Next came the annual clash with Jesuit. “I guess we played extremely well in the first half,” Conlin said after the game as his squad scored 28 unanswered points before halftime as they rolled to an easy 34-14 win against the Blue Jays. Oddo ran 41y to paydirt on the first Crusader play from scrimmage after a poor 21y Jesuit punt. Troy and Chachere tacked on scoring runs in the second quarter as the Crusaders rolled up 237y of offense in the first 24 minutes. Meanwhile, Jesuit 42  Century II

gained just 81y and turned the ball over three times. When Martin got the ball a second time, they drove 75y to the Blue Jay 5 only to turn the ball over on a botched handoff. But the Jays went three-and-out again to set up the Crusaders on the Jesuit 30 after another short punt and a penalty. Oddo took a 19y pass from Chachere and then scored the TD on a 6y run on the final play of the quarter.

14-0 Martin. The Jays finally got some momentum on their next possession, moving to the Martin 45. But pressure from West forced QB Tommy English into an intentional grounding penalty on fourth down. Starting from the Jesuit 41, Martin scored in 11 plays.

The key play was a Chachere pass to Huth for 16y to the three. Garret scored the TD from the one for make it 21-0 with 2:11 left in the half. But that was enough time for another Crusader score set up when Stant picked off another pass and returned to the Blue Jay 35. On the first play, Chachere connected with Delatte to make it 28-0. The Crusaders’ only second half points came on a 1y plunge by Oddo. Jesuit finally got two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score a more respectable 34-14.

The Crusaders, now ranked No. 1 in the metro area, played a rare Sunday game against Holy Cross. The Crusaders led only 14-7 in the third period when three pass interceptions turned the game into a rout before 4,000 fans. “Our secondary turned the game around,” said Conlin. “Holy Cross was very tough inside defensively, but we kind of wore them out in the third quarter.” After Chachere hit Rink with TD passes of 20 and 9y in the first half, the Tigers scored on a 1y run to cut the lead to 14-7. DE West picked off a flare pass in the flat and returned it 35y for a 21-7 lead. Pat Stant and Don Delatte intercepted the next two HC passes with the second pick setting up Delatte’s 21y TD run with 3:58 left in the third period. Oddo capped a 60y drive on the second play of the final quarter with a 1y plunge, and Miller rounded out the scoring late in the game with a 2y run after Stant blocked a punt.

Next came another Sunday game, this one at night against Rummel for the district lead on the Tad Gormley field transformed into a sea of mud because of heavy afternoon rains. For 47 minutes, neither team mounted a serious threat, and the game seemed destined for overtime. But Chachere ended that possibility by turning a broken play into a winning one, scrambling 19y in the slop through the Raider defense to score the game’s only touchdown with just three seconds left.

“We were trying to get into position for a field goal. We did not want overtime,” said Conlin. “The touchdown was a flood pass, but no one was open.”“I looked at two receivers and both were covered,” Chachere explained. “I went up the middle and then cut to the outside. My line did a great job. A couple of guys missed me.”

“He did a great job,” said Raiders coach George Ryan. “He made a pivot on one of the few spots on the field with grass and when he did that, our guys just began slipping.” The winning drive covered 42y after Mike Dana and Stant landed on a fumble with 2:55 to go. Each team threatened on its first possession. Oddo led the Crusaders to the Raider 9 before a sack ended the threat. Then Rummel marched from its 15 to the Martin 16 but missed a 33y field goal attempt.

The Crusaders survived three critical kicking-game mistakes to beat St. Augustine 20-6. A bad snap, a fumbled punt, and a roughing-the-kicker penalty broke a two-game streak of mistake-free kicking games in the mud. But Chachere rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to remove some of the offensive burden from Oddo, who carried “only” 16 times with teammate Don Delatte picking up the slack with 15 runs for 109y. After a scoreless first quarter, Martin launched a 58y drive that featured a 20y pass from Chachere to Murphy to the 16. Three plays later, Garret rolled out and hit Jeff Huth for a 12y touchdown with 2:33 left in the first half. St. Aug. responded with an 86y drive that ended on the

last play of the half with a 10y touchdown pass. However, the PAT failed, and the teams went to their dressing rooms with Martin leading 7-6. After a scoreless third period, the Crusaders marched 80y in nine plays with Delatte providing a 37y end run. The touchdown came on a 1y sneak by Chachere to make it 14-6 with 5:20 to play. Martin removed all doubt when they smothered Leroy Hoard for an 18y loss to 8 as he tried to pass out of punt formation. It took five plays to score with Chachere doing the honors with another 1y sneak. “They keyed on Oddo, so we gave the ball to Delatte,” said Conlin. “We did a good job on defense.

Anytime you stop Leroy, you’ve done something. He is just tremendous.”

The Times-Picayune/The States-Item’s AAAA All-Metro football team included DE Rod West, who was voted Most Valuable Player on defense. He had 62 solo tackles and 54 assists. He made tackles behind the line of scrimmage 16 times in addition to two fumble recoveries and a pass interception that he returned for a touchdown. DT Warde Manuel and LB Pat Stant also made the All-Metro defensive team while RB Troy Oddo and T Harold Bologna made the offensive team.

The Crusaders finished district play against De La Salle with an opportunity to close out the season with a 9-1 mark and become the first-place representative in the playoffs from District 11-AAAA. But Martin had a struggle with De La Salle the previous year, rallying from a 12-0 deficit to win by one point. “We have a tough time with De La Salle every year,” said Coach Conlin about his alma mater. “They are very big on both lines, and they lean on you pretty good.” The Crusaders won the first down battle 19-11 and gained 352y of total offense to 221 for the Cavaliers but had to be content with a 17-14 victory. West started the scoring with a 23y field goal in the second quarter, but De La Salle countered with a 35y touchdown pass to take a 7-3 lead. But the Crusaders retook the lead before halftime on a 24y aerial from Chachere to Huth to make it 10-7. Neither team scored in the third quarter before Chachere threw another touchdown pass, this one from the 4 to seemingly ice the game. But the Cavs responded with a touchdown of their own to make the final score 17-14 Crusaders. Both the Crimson touchdowns may have been through the air, but they were set up by a ground game that netted 284y with Oddo accounting for 168. “I thought we played very poorly, and I thought De La Salle played very well,” said Conlin. “We had too many penalties, and they bogged down our drives.”

The Crusaders ended in a three-way tie for first in the district with Rummel and Shaw but entered the playoffs as the #1 team from 11-AAAA. They romped through their first game, walloping B. T. Washington 55-6.

They had a much tougher time the next week against Bogalusa. Times-Picayune writer Bill Bumgarner started his report on the game this way: “Bogalusa’s defense? It was tremendous. Brother Martin’s defense? It was spectacular.” The Lumberjacks held the Crusaders to just 228y of offense but could gain only 149 themselves as Martin lived to play another day with a hard fought 13-0 victory. Oddo scored both touchdowns on runs of 7y in the first quarter and 2y in the third. His first score was set up by Delatte’s 55y punt that was downed on the Lumberjack 1. The Bogalusa defense forced six turnovers – three fumble recoveries and three interceptions – but fortunately gave the ball away five times themselves.

An age-old football axiom says, “Defense travels well.” That would be tested the next week as the Crusaders went to Mathews, LA to play Central Lafourche. A standing-room-only crowd of 6,000 watched Martin play on a wet surface for the third time in the season. The Trojans fumbled the opening kickoff, and West recovered at the CL 29. Seven plays later, Chachere threw to Rink for a 12y touchdown. The PAT failed. 6-0 Martin with just 2:27 gone in the game. After getting good field position again in the second quarter, the Crusaders marched 44y for another TD. Chachere threw to Huth for 11y, and Delatte gained 28 more to the four and then scored on the next play. Garret ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 with 7:23 left in the half. West popped up the next kickoff, and

the Trojans took over on their own 41. They proceeded to march 59y sparked by passes of 18 and 21y to put the ball on the three. The defense held for three plays, but a pass into the end zone made it 14-7 with just 25 seconds left in the half.

The Trojans drove to the Martin 25 on their first possession of the second half. But Manuel caused a fumble that was recovered by Gilly Boudeaux to stop the threat.

Oddo then ripped off gains of 32 and 20y to highlight a drive to the Central eight.

But the Crusaders came up with nothing when Chachere’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete. But the drive indirectly yielded points when Central was unable to move the ball and had to punt from its end zone. The punter dropped the snap, and Mike Danna recovered in the end zone. Chachere’s extra point made it 21-7.

Two plays later, Herbie Lang intercepted a Trojan pass and returned the ball to the 19. It took five plays to go the rest of the way, with Delatte scoring from the one with 1:45 left in the period to make the final score 28-7. “The touchdown we recovered in the end zone kind of turned the whole thing around for us,” said Conlin. “They were very much in the game up until then, and they had given us plenty to handle. They forced us into a lot of mistakes. They have an excellent ballclub.”

The Crusaders’ opponent in the state semifinals was the St. Martinville Tigers.

Unfortunately, the game was played in St. Martinville, which is southeast of Lafayette. An overflow crowd of 5,000 saw the 13-1 Tigers, AAA champions the year before, upset the Crusaders 14-7. “We made too many mistakes,” said Bob Conlin. “We did not deserve to win. St. Martinville did. When you cannot execute the most fundamental play in football, when you have penalties and you drop passes, you can’t win.” He was referring to a botched center snap that hit Chachere’s leg and was recovered by Dexter Harrison on the first play after a punt was downed at the Crusader two. Two plays later Adam Pierre ran into the end zone to put St. Martinville ahead 12-7. Then QB Dwayne Fontenette ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-7 with 8:48 to play. Kenny Nicolosi returned the ensuing kickoff 42y to the 49, but the fired-up Tiger defense forced a threeand-out punt. Martin got the ball back one last time on its own 32 with 2:47 to play. Crusader hopes rose as Chachere completed five passes to put the ball on the Tiger 20 with a minute to play. But the Crusaders went backward from there as a sack made it third and 17 from the 27. Chachere spotted Delatte wide open in the end zone, but Delatte dropped the ball. On fourth down, Chachere completed a pass to Estorge, but he was stopped 6y short of a first down. Tiger coach Carroll delaHoussaye said, “We were very fortunate. We did to Martin what Martin had been doing to other teams all year. We got some breaks, but you don’t give our team a lead like they did in the fourth quarter. They dropped some passes, but that’s part of the game. We capitalized on their mistakes.”

Thus did perhaps the greatest Crusader team of all time get eliminated from the playoffs.
