CENTURY II
Alumni

Dear Friends of Brother Martin High School:
Brother Jean Sobert, S.C., always reminded me that “It’s all about the kids.” During my years of service at Brother Martin High School, I have attended many graduations, including my own in 1977. On Wednesday, May 21, when we celebrated our 2025 graduates—the 56th for Brother Martin and the 156th for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart teaching in New Orleans—I once again witnessed an encapsulation of all that we do at our school on Elysian Fields Avenue.
Yes, there is a procession, valedictory addresses, academic awards, and each student is called by name to receive his diploma from our Principal, Ryan Gallagher ‘00. However, I witnessed something else that night — unbelievable positivity and gratitude. Almost every senior gave a heartfelt, “Thank you so much” as they shook our hands on stage. Parents were beaming, so proud of their sons’ accomplishments and growth. You committed to a program that asked a lot of you, that challenged you intellectually and spiritually, that “got in your way” when you were tempted to “take the easy way out,” that helped you to see that what you want the most in life is not always the same as what you want right now. Truly, holistic education in the Brothers of the Sacred Heart tradition is life-changing.
And, yes, we have the next senior class ready to go, the one after that, and the one after that. However, a graduate’s relationship with Brother Martin
doesn’t end when he crosses that stage. The cap tassel moves, and the diploma is gripped tightly in his hands. As an alumnus, he now enters just another stage of his relationship with us. And the opportunities for him are just as full and challenging as his time as a student: business networking, mentoring, volunteering, and hopefully guiding his own sons to these hallowed hallways many years in the future, or returning to teach and coach, like the 40+ graduates on our faculty today.
Graduations are often viewed as “the end” of an educational cycle; for us, they are a pause for recognition of “a job well done” and the exhortation to “go out and change the world for the better.” And then come back and share your good news with us once again!
And whenever our graduates return to visit — and we encourage them to do so — I think they will see an even better Brother Martin High School. We continually plan ways to improve our programs and facilities for the benefit of our students. Our Master Plan for improvement is bold and visionary, and great news is forthcoming about how our campus will continue to grow, all done with the formation of our Crusaders in mind. Remember, “It’s all about the kids.”
Cor Jesu! Ametur Cor Mariae!
When Father Andre’ Coindre experienced his charism moment on the streets of Lyon, France in the aftermath of the French Revolution, he in turn sparked another revolution, one which we continue to contribute to today as part of the Institute of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.
In 1st Corinthians Chapter 12, St. Paul says, “Although each star has its own light, it is more interesting to discover the bodies they form together in the firmament, because there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them; there are different kinds of service, but the same Lord; there are different kinds of workings, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”
St. Paul describes the potential and the spirit of our current Crusader students: stars with their own light, but stars whose light shines much brighter together, regardless of individual gifts or forms of service. Whatever their gifts, they are all exemplars of servant leadership in our school community.
We see that same potential in each of our Brother Martin students through their daily commitment to servant leadership.
• That potential is evident in the Academic Excellence in classrooms throughout the academic day: 58 current students have earned a score of 30 or greater on the ACT; the class of 2025 earned over $20 million in college scholarships.
• Such potential is evident in our emphasis on Religious Values: our current students have earned various Outstanding Parish Youth Leadership Awards for their commitment to the Catholic faith and their parish communities; over 30 of our students participated in the student-led “Solidarity Sleep Out” on campus in an effort to support and raise awareness for Covenant House.
• This potential permeates throughout our student organizations and the inherent self-discipline therein, as evidenced by our Rugby and Bowling state titles; cross country, wrestling, tennis, and baseball state runner-up finishes; E-sports Central U.S. Regional Championships; the successful defense of the UCA Cheer National Championship; five Catholic League district championships; LMEA superior ratings in our storied Crusader band; All-State recognition in chorus; Bravo Zulu recognition of our NJROTC, a program whose history is among the richest in the country;
The stories of our students’ most recent successes continue throughout the pages of this Century II, alongside those of our alumni of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin. To echo St. Paul, different gifts, different forms of service, even different schools. Each of us with our own light, yet more interesting –and stronger – when formed together, in our case as alumni of our Brothers of the Sacred Heart schools.
Ametur Cor Jesu! Ametur Cor Mariea!
Warde J. Manuel ’86 has been selected by the Brother Martin High School Board of Directors as the 2025 Alumnus of the Year.
The Alumnus of the Year award is presented annually by the Board of Directors of Brother Martin High School to an alumnus selected for contributions to his profession and his religious, civic, business, educational, and community involvement.
Warde is the University of Michigan’s Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics and serves as the Chairman of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. A Michigan alumnus and two-sport athlete who played football under Bo Schembechler, Warde returned to Michigan after tenures as Athletic Director at the University of Connecticut and Buffalo University. During Warde’s tenure in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines have captured the NCAA Championship in football and women’s gymnastics and finished as national runner-up in five other sports.
Warde earned a Bachelor of General Studies degree with a focus in Psychology, a Master of Social Work, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Warde met his wife, Chrislan, a University of Michigan alumna who earned a Master of Health Services Administration degree. Together they have a daughter, Emma, and a son, Evan.
During his time at Brother Martin, Warde was chosen as a Golden Crusader, was named High School All-American Defensive Tackle in football, and helped to lead the Crusaders to a semifinal appearance in the 1985 playoffs. He earned AllState Honors in Chorus and lettered in Track and Field. He has assisted in sponsoring football team meals, and he visits campus as often as possible while in New Orleans.
Warde was officially presented with the award at a dinner at the Audubon Tea Room in early May. Brother Martin Board of Directors Chairman David Gallo ’77, President Greg Rando ’77, Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00, and 2024 Alumnus of the Year recipient Mike Flick ’66 SA presented the award.
Previous recipients of the award, along with Warde’s classmates, former teachers and coaches, and family and friends attended.
As part of the Alumnus of the Year celebrations, Warde Manuel ’86 addressed our students and shared advice with our current Crusaders about
working hard and having fun while doing it.
Brother Martin Student Council President Bailey Anderson ’25 presented Warde with a special gift, and past faculty members and fellow alumni were in attendance. (Photo on Front Cover)

Planned gifts offer substantial tax savings to donors, especially on appreciated properties and securities. A planned gift can reduce income tax and avoid capital gains tax. Satisfaction in knowing that your planned gift will benefit many generations of Brother Martin students. The Brother Martin High School community mourns the passing of Dr. Winston Riehl. Dr. Riehl coached the Brother Martin Tennis Team, assisted with Brother Martin athletics, and is a member of the Society of 1869. He received the 1995 Founders Medal Award.
The Sacré Coeur Society is a posthumous inspired giving society. Members have either listed Brother Martin in their obituaries in lieu of flowers or have had giving inspired on their behalf. We are grateful for our members’ spirit of generosity and the close ties that they held to Brother Martin High School. For more information, please contact Bryce Barbaro ’17 in the Brother Jean Sobert, S.C. Advancement and Alumni Relations Office at 504-284-6700 or email bbarbaro@brothermartin.com.
An article in the February 19, 1934, issue of The Aloysian recounted the intertwined lives of two recent stars of the prep league. Eddie Daigle of St. Aloysius ’33 and Eddie Toribio of Jesuit grew up together.
Both attended McDonogh 28 school on Esplanade Avenue just off Broad. After finishing there, Toribio began a course at the Delgado Trade School while Daigle entered Aloysius. Toribio moved to Jesuit “and then the fun began.”
Let Richard Lambert ’34, The Aloysian writer, take over.
By Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ
Every sports-loving Orleanian looked forward to an Aloysius-Jesuit event simply because they were assured of an intensely exciting competition between the two Eddies. Can Toribio score with Daigle behind him? Will Daigle be able to break loose with Toribio hovering about? That’s all anyone wished to see. And in the sprints it was beautiful to see them running abreast carrying with them the anxious hearts of followers of their respective schools. But few knew of the two lives off the athletic field.
Living in the same parish, attending the same church, present at the
same parties, going about with the same set, they were often, in fact, almost invariably side by side. Parishioners of St. Rose Church were proud of their two Eddies. Very often they were seen next to each other at the Communion rail. On the morning of any athletic competition Father Prendergast administered Holy Communion to them and he says that often he wondered whose prayer the Lord would answer that day.
Both boys were noted for their modest reception of victory and praise. Both were equally good sportsmen in defeat. Separated now by miles and miles, they are still good friends. If rumors now circulating in prep circles are true, within six months the two Eddies will be rivals no longer but partners on the field as they were in childhood. Both boys are scheduled to enter Loyola next fall.
Daigle transferred to Loyola after a year in New Mexico.
After assisting legendary coach Gernon Brown at Jesuit for many years, Toribio coached the Aloysius gridders from 1948-1952, winning the school’s first city championship in his last year. He then returned to his alma mater as head coach until his early death in 1958.
