Subject Choices:

Brookhurst International School A-Level offers a range of subjects – primarily the ‘facilitating subjects’- those most commonly required or preferred for entry into particular courses at universities.

Psychology Law Geography

Economics Applied ICT Music

English Language Drama Business Studies

Religious Studies Fine Art Design & Technology

The subject combinations that Brookhurst is able to offer are based upon our own research and our own experience of the sort of subject combinations which students choose. Although flexibility is a priority, it is important to note that not all combinations of subjects are possible, just as some are undesirable. If subject choices do not fit in the required combination they should have a discussion with our head of sixth form and the admissions team and they will be guided accordingly.

Although the requirements detailed below are the normal requirements. There may be special circumstances where they are not rigidly applied. The sole criterion overall is that a student studying a particular AS/A level subject should be likely to benefit from the course and achieve a pass grade at the end of the course. Obviously, when places are limited, priority has to be given to students who have met the requirements. The minimum IGCSE requirements for entrance to Year 12 fall into two categories: general requirements and subject-specific requirements. If a student wishes to enroll with us from the local Kenyan System, an average of C+ at KCSE is required. Students with lower grades are considered but might be required to sit for an entrance exam.

General Requirements

A minimum of 5 A* - C grades at IGCSE, which should include Mathematics and English. A good academic and behavioral record prior to entry.

Subject-specific requirements

A*-B grade in the subjects students wish to take at AS/A level.

Life after Brookhurst

Our students develop a love of their subjects, an appetite for learning and have a wide range of extracurricular interests and experience. This stands them in good stead for completing their UCAS application for university or at interviews for their first job. The vast majority of students move onto higher education institutions. 96% of Brookhurst’s sixth formers take up university places either in Kenya, in the East African region or abroad. Our students usually gain access to their first choice university.

To help them choose and successfully apply for courses, our students benefit from having their own individual tutors, as well as subject teachers and a dedicated Head of Sixth Form. They enjoy one-to-one advice and guidance throughout their decision making process: from choosing A Levels to choosing a degree course.

University Entry

We begin our sixth form Year 12 with a career day forum where our Year 10-13s take part. A key event where students can discuss a variety of careers with a number of professionals from different areas. The Year 12-13s engage in a ‘Life After Brookhurst’ conference where expert speakers from universities, businesses and student organizations impart their wisdom. Students also engage in trips to universities as well as a Q&A with our sixth form alums.

At the start of Year 13, students’ progress their final application and we provide intensive support through tutors and the Head of Sixth Form. Interview practice sessions are organized for all necessary applicants. We also work with the Overseas Advisory Center who run a higher education course finder questionnaire, and students have access to online career development program.

After completing my O-levels, thought that was it. The idea of me doing A-Levels came from my parents. Honestly, never wanted to do it but as time progressed, discovered how beneficial independent research can be. The subjects in A-Levels aren’t easy. But they became doable because of all the research I did on my own for specific topics on those subjects. I can say A-levels helped me become a better researcher and information gatherer. A-levels helped me understand the world of being independent which is basically university life, the life that is expected to be the next stage after completing school. A-levels was like a guide and stepping stone to the course I wanted to do in university, cybersecurity. In fact, when I finished my O-levels and started A-levels, I wasn’t entirely sure what wanted to do as a career. But with the support of my subject teachers, the understanding and love had for the subjects chose and the research that came across in A-levels, I became confident of what my future will be. The access to our laptops made revision and learning a walk in the park. The subjects’ content is more of things we see and live with in the real world like Physics. The were also simplified topics of what to expect in taking any course in the university. have substantial understanding of the IT world and what to expect from it because of A-Level IT. It’s exciting. As I reach the end of my A-level journey, feel like a much better person and ready to face whatever comes next in my education. The journey didn’t only help me see things education wise, it helped me see things that are necessities in life.
