NEWSLETTER BROOKHURST @ THE UN Model United Nations (MUN) is a student simulation of the proceedings of the United Nations. Students, referred to as Delegates, are assigned a country to represent in one of the UN’s numerous committees with pre-set topics to debate. They research the background of their country, their country’s position on the topics at hand, and prepare notes on possible solutions to the problems faced.

The 22nd annual Model United Nations Conference held in Kenya and organized by students from across the various universities in Kenya and comprises of a secretariat that helps in making sure the conference runs smoothly.

On March 8th the whole topic for the day was set and focused on women and the various issues our women go through in all the member states of the United Nations. The students had the privilege to get insights from our guests of the day as well as the UN Women’s Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said: “The review of women’s rights shows that, despite some progress, no country has achieved gender equality. Equality isn’t just one quarter of the seats at the tables of power. But that’s the current reality of women’s representation, across the board.

The school organized participation in this conference as an avenue for our young students to learn how to express themselves and to be part of the leaders of the future.

The closing day was a spectacle to observe as we had the students experience different cultures in the conferences’ Global Village. This is a space where the various delegates get to showcase their cultural attire to the delegation as they all learn about each other in a bid to ensure a peaceful future for the world. The students were awarded for participating various committees such as United Nations Security Council.

Overall, the event was eye opening for the students. It gave them the platform to sharpen their research, debating and presentation skills. WE ARE BROOKHURST

Art At Brookhurst Lavington At our Art and Design class, students are taught to develop their creativity and ideas and increase proficiency in their execution.

They develop a critical understanding of artists, architects and designers expressing reasoned judgement that can inform their own work.

Here is a number of the projects our Year 10 students presented at the end of the term.

BLACK TIE MASQUERADE @KISERIAN Black tie Friday Masquerade is a new project by our amazing teachers where we get to celebrate the arts and talents of our students all the way from early years to the seniors.

This year we were working on giving the students space to express themselves in their dressing, talents and also their presentation skills. Our students really did look forward to showcasing their talents to our parents who were invited for the event.

The event was designed in a way to ensure all our students participated in the school, from the youngest to the seniors. During the day, we had our juniors showcase to the audience their amazing skills in dancing, plays, storytelling and singing. The few who were really taking the experience as it came really put in a shift and appeared in a couple of pieces presented.

Our Year 3 students, Year 7, Year 6 and Year 5 had a couple of pieces in dancing that really moved everyone.

Year 7 took to the stage in a star-studded line up with some of the best dancers in the school featuring in the piece. Diversity was really showcased with the music played and moves showcased on the piece and thanks to Mr. Denis for helping them prepare.

Year 6 really took their time to prepare when they had the chance as it was evident in the outfits which were matching in color and they really stole the show coming in with some of the best moves in the day dancing and had the parents and teachers enjoying and celebrating them. This was done under the supervision of Ms Lydia Kwamboka.

Year 5 had a whole show lined up for the day and nobody was ready for it as we had them present a story where they all participated in and then shortly after had us feeling happy while they danced to “Happy- Pharell Williams” which was also an instant classic among the audience. Year 4 had to play out the children’s classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” which seemed to be at the peak of the day as they really had it going smoothly from start to finish. Our stars really owning the moment and really coming to life as all emotions were at the peak with the costumes for the Queen and Snow White stealing the show. This was all under the supervision of Ms Grace.

Year 3 came in and showcased to us their amazing dancing skills as they really raised the roof with their killer choreography skills lead by our amazing Ivana and the whole class was in sync. Under the supervision of our very amazing Ms Financy. Year 2 had a short skit and a dance routine that was all modern and cool as the seniors seemed to approve by the cheers and screams they were getting from the rest of the school and parents. This was possible under the supervision of Ms Mercy.

The Year 1 and Early Years teamed up for a roll in the good old days dancing to “Celebration- Kool & the Gang” this was almost an instant hit as old as it is and had everyone singing along to the song all the way to the end.

The whole day seemed to be building up to the main event in the evening.

This was such a big thing for the students as it was a first of many others where they get to showcase their talents and also do it while showcasing their beautiful outfits. The boys really turned up with most having amazing evening wear thanks to the efforts of the parents and the girls were really not left behind, they really brought the elegance with the beautiful and colorful dresses they had prepared. The biggest steal for the evening would be the play that the seniors had. This instantly became the talk of the day as the parents were really entertained and surprised by the amount of talent that was on show at the play.

One of the parents had this to say, “ The event has been a very frequent topic in the house and today, I can for sure say it was a blessing because, we all did not know our daughter is this talented. Thank you for bring this home.”

Another had this to say, “I have not seen this happen before and I appreciate the thought of inviting the parents to celebrate the talents of the students and wish for more like this.”

Parent - Teacher meeting at Brookhurst Lavington On 25th March,2023, we held interactive sessions with the Year 7 - 13 parents, teachers and school management. A parent-teacher meeting is a great opportunity to: share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, portfolios, and assignments. learn from parents or guardians so you can be better informed about students' strengths, needs, behaviors, and learning styles.

The parents gained an understanding of the school programs, assessed our progress and identified areas of improvement. Looking forward to more sessions next term!
