Exec. Principal's Note

We created the Alumni Spotlight In order to highlight our awesome group of individuals that are part of the Brookhurst Alumnus. Brookhurst's years of Alumni have been engaging in positive contributions to society, their families and the world. Spotlighting individual members helps us to motivate the current class of students to see the sky is not the limit, more is possible.

Alumni Spotlight will be a monthly publication on our social media platforms and will lead to the development in the annual Brookhurst Yearbook.

What are your fondest memories about your time at Brookhurst International School?

My fondest high school memories were during special events when students helped in the kitchen and assisted the principal, Mr. Mathenge, during goat slaughtering. These moments created a unique and fun environment because school life wasn't only about academics.

Our teachers, especially Mr. Mathenge, also taught us practical skills. Being involved in preparing meals gave us a sense of responsibility and teamwork, reminding us that learning extends beyond the classroom and can be applied to real-life activities within our own families.

While that was happening the majority of the students were outside enjoying a sports filled day with different competitions. I will never forget how there was so much energy and school spirit. The day would wrap up with a shared dinner and an awards ceremony recognizing the best athletic performances. The togetherness we felt in celebration of each other is unforgettable.

The moments of learning, laughter, togetherness and community are what I will continue to cherish and remember most fondly.

Brookhurst taught me how to survive alone without the presence of my parents. As a first-time boarder I learnt how to undertake my responsibilities & develop new skills.

I also developed a strong work ethic and time management skills, which have stayed with me to this day. The balanced environment at Brookhurst where academics, sports, and practical life skills were all valued-really helped shape me into a more well-rounded and grounded individual. Those lessons continue to guide how I approach challenges and opportunities today.

Q 3

What did you benefit from the most whilst doing your studies at Brookhurst?

One of the biggest benefits I gained from studying at Brookhurst was the opportunity to develop strong leadership skills The school encouraged students to take initiative and be responsible in various settings-whether in the classroom, during group work, or through roles that required guiding and supporting peers I learned how to lead by example, make decisions under pressure, and work collaboratively with others to achieve common goals

Q 2

Which values did Brookhurst impart on you that have an effect on you today?

Brookhurst instilled in me a strong sense of discipline, responsibility, and community One of the most lasting values I took away was the importance of teamworkwhether it was in academics, sports, or even during school events like kitchen duties and helping with meal preparations

The school emphasized that leadership isn't just about being in charge, but about serving others and working together to achieve a common goal

Brookhurst also taught me the importance of time management and knowing how to prioritize Balancing academics, sports, and extracurricular activities required me to stay organized and focused, which has helped me greatly beyond school life

On a social level, Brookhurst was a very diverse and interactive environment. I built meaningful friendships and learned how to connect with people from different backgrounds.

This improved my communication skills and helped me become more confident in social settings.

What are you currently up to (Academically/Professionally)? Q 4

Academically, I am pursuing my bachelor's degree in Food Technology at Fulda University of Applied Sciences in Germany. The program has equipped me with a strong foundation in both the scientific and practical aspects of food production, safety, and innovation.

Professionally, I gained hands-on experience through an internship at Papperts, a bread manufacturing company, where I was actively involved in safety and production processes. This experience not only strengthened my technical skills but also deepened my passion for applying food technology to improve nutrition and promote sustainable practices.

Tell us about your transition to university life? What was your experience like?

Transitioning to university life came with both exciting opportunities and real challenges. One of the biggest hurdles for me was moving to a non-native English-speaking country. At first, it felt like I was living a double life-constantly translating everything around me just to keep up. It was overwhelming at times, but it pushed me to start learning German. I'm still improving, but I've made a lot of progress and I'm proud of how far I've come.

Despite that initial challenge, my university experience has been amazing. Being part of such a diverse community-with students from all over the world has opened my eyes to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking. It's also helped me understand and appreciate my own culture even more. The environment encourages growth not just academically, but personally as well. I've become more independent, adaptable, and open-minded through this journey.

What advice would you give a Brookhurst graduate looking to study abroad?

My advice would be to embrace the fact that you'll never feel fully ready to pack your life into two suitcases and move to a completely new environment. Studying abroad comes with real challenges-cultural differences, language barriers, and moments of homesickness but those experiences are what shape you.

Pushing your boundaries and stepping out of your comfort zone is where the real growth happens. You'll develop independence, resilience, and a broader view of the world. Overcoming challenges sets a foundation for greater ambitions and a stronger, more confident version of yourself.

Q 8

Q 9

What skills, hobbies or causes have you picked up since leaving Brookhurst?

Since living abroad I have developed a strong love for adventure and travel. Experiencing life in a different socioeconomic environment opened my mind to diverse cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives, which has made me more adaptable and resilient.

I've learned practical skills such as budgeting, resourcefulness, and planning, especially in balancing travel and student life. Living in a developing country also taught me to appreciate simplicity, problem-solving with limited resources, and finding innovative ways to overcome challenges. These experiences have strengthened my independence, decision-making, and adaptability, all of which have contributed to my personal, academic, and professional growth.

Learn to embrace change and never be afraid to challenge yourself beyond your comfort zone Growth often comes from the most unexpected places, and every challenge is an opportunity to discover what you're truly capable of. Brookhurst has given you a strong foundation-now it's up to you to build boldly on it. Stay curious, stay grounded, and always strive to become a better version of yourself.
