Welcome to the May and June edition of The Bromsgrove Oracle.

Where do we start ?.....An often overused description of our current crisis is “unprecedented” and I think we could all agree that the last few weeks and months have been challenging to say the least and unfortunately I think we have got some more challenges to come before we can see any light at the end of the tunnel. Finding our latest magazine in your letterbox today, you might ask yourselves how, or indeed why, have we decided to publish and deliver our magazine but the answer is really quite simple. We believe that our community enjoys and supports our supply of local information and communication and now more than ever, our businesses and our community need to come together, to ensure we all come through these difficult times together. We might be in darker times now but the sun will rise again and when it does we will need our local businesses and our local businesses will need us. My message to our local businesses is this, be ready for “freedom from restrictions” continue to promote your business to your customers and even some potential new ones and make sure your community knows, who you are, where you are, what you do, why you do it and how to get to you ?. My message to our community is “Buy Local” whenever possible, to support our local economy and our community. Our magazine is a fantastic place to promote and find out more about local businesses, events, news and information from around our community (all linked to and promoted on our website and social media). – Why not enter or “Find Wol” competition for your chance to win £50.00 - Simply find the hidden image of our friendly Owl “Wol” inside the magazine, go to our website www.thebromsgroveoracle.co.uk and enter the competition for your chance to win, it’s very easy to enter and like the saying goes “you’ve got to be in it, to win it”……Good Luck “Find Wol” - Last Issue’s Lucky Winner was Lisa Childs …….. well done Lisa and we hope you enjoy your prize. We really do enjoy providing our magazine for you, we value your contributions and your feedback and please don’t hesitate to provide me with your suggestions for future editions. Hope you enjoy this latest edition and don’t forget YOU can provide YOUR events, news and information too ?. Cover Image – Until next time. St Johns from Sanders Park Lyndon. photo by Lyndon Stokes.

Enhancing Your Dog’s Daily Walk By slowing a walk down, even for 10-15 minutes of that walk, allows a variety of muscles to be activated that may otherwise not be. It also facilitates balance and encourages even weight bearing. Using effective slow lead walking can be more physically tiring than that of an hour-long off lead run. Kerbsides Kerbsides can be used in a variety of ways that can benefit your dogʼs walk.

Eve Bestwick, Physiotherapist at Clent Hills Pet Fitness & Rehab Centre in Bromsgrove, provides 5 useful tips to enhance your dog’s walk for the most benefit. Lead walking is one of the most common exercises our veterinary physiotherapists prescribe and is a simple but surprisingly beneficial exercise for your dog, not only in itself but it can also be adapted to incorporate a variety of exercises that may be prescribed, all in one place. These adaptations may also be beneficial as a rehabilitative tool.

Speed When prescribing walking as an exercise, it is commonly phrased as “slow lead walking” with emphasis on the speed of the walk. However, dogs can often be guilty of overdoing it due to adrenaline taking over, which may explain why they look fine on a walk but are stiff or sore when you get home.

Walking up and down a variety of kerbsides is a quick and easy way to help encourage an active range of motion - elbow flexion and shoulder extension – similar to the exercise of “give paw”. If you have a particularly small dog, you may want to avoid too much jumping off tall kerbs to reduce the impact on their front limbs. Sit to stand is another common exercise easily incorporated into your daily walk by getting your dog to sit at the kerbside before crossing the road. Repeating it 3-5 times, before continuing the walk, targets the glutes, whilst promoting an active hind limb range of motion.

5.

The dog should walk at the slow pace mentioned earlier to encourage weight-bearing and activation of the correct muscles. Diagonal walking on a hill can increase body awareness and activation of the inner thigh and shoulder muscles.

Surfaces Different surfaces are another simple tool to use during your walk. Proprioception is a term meaning “perception or awareness of the body and its movement” and surfaces can be used to enhance and encourage this. By walking on a variety of different surfaces (such as grass, tarmac, soil) in short bursts, approximately 15 – 30 seconds on each, this challenges the bodyʼs systems involved in proprioception, leading to an increase in body awareness. This, in turn, strengthens and increases the limb range of motion, particularly through the use of surfaces such as long grass.

Gradients Going up and down hills provides a simple strengthening programme that can be incorporated into a short segment of your walk. Uphill walking mainly activates the hind limb muscles, particularly the glutes and hamstrings, whilst also working to promote active flexion and extension of the hip joint. Downhill hill walking activates the fore limb muscles, particularly in the shoulders and elbows as they have to work to slow the body down and act as brakes. Gradients do not have to be large to be beneficial - a small bank or slight slope is ideal.

Obstacles Making use of various obstacles on your walk can provide a simple physiotherapy exercise for your dog. For example, walking around a tree or lamppost can work to promote core strength and active spinal range of motion, and encourage even weight-bearing to avoid compensatory movement. You can also use things such as logs and stones, encouraging your dog to step over them a few times. This will encourage active range of motion of the legs whilst also increasing body awareness and proprioception, as mentioned earlier. Please note – during rehabilitation you should discuss the frequency and duration of walks with your veterinary physiotherapist. With the coronavirus causing chaos across all sport, Bromsgrove Sporting were one of the early victims when the Southern League ended the season and expunged all fixtures in early March. Business News Fortune Favours the Brave - Take Action Now! In times of uncertainty there can be opportunity! Marketing consultant Sarah Rees explains how you can improve the situation for your business in the current environment. When lockdown was announced on 23rd March a wave of fear rapidly swept across the local business community.

Businesses need to communicate loudly and clearly with customers, now more than ever in this disconnected world.

Whilst some businesses have been fortunate enough to remain open, supplying goods or services essential during the pandemic, many have been forced to shut their doors and sit it out at home! A frightening situation for any business owner.

Keeping in touch with your customers is important, so you donʼt risk losing them to competitors. Itʼs always cheaper to retain an existing customer than it is to acquire a new one

But, as the saying goes, ʻfortune favours the braveʼ! Donʼt sit back in silence and hope it will all be OK. Marketing budgets may appear to be a soft target for businesses looking to save money but a cut in marketing activity is a short term fix, that could have long term consequences. Maintaining visibility in the marketplace is essential, especially if your business is temporarily closed. Out of sight means out of mind.

Take advantage of this time to re-evaluate your current marketing. Examine what your customers want. Adjust your advertising copy and images to meet the current needs of your customers, whether theyʼre looking for informative, uplifting or helpful content and products. You can improve your current situation if you are active now. Donʼt wait till life returns to normal to promote your business. You will be fighting against everyone else amid a huge spike in competition as businesses fight to sell and claw back income.

The economy wonʼt bounce back immediately and sadly businesses will fail as a result of the pandemic. Those who are pro-active and accept the challenge now will be better placed to survive in the ʻNew Worldʼ. Sarah Rees has run Big Splash Communications Ltd in Bromsgrove for the past 13 years. The business offers professional marketing communications support for independent, local businesses. Sarah achieved Chartered Marketer status in 2010. Accountants Help Plant a New Forest

A Bromsgrove Accountancy firm has contributed towards 62,355 new trees being planted this year at a huge broadleaf forest in Warwickshire. Staff from Martin G Clark & Co, in Aston Fields, visited The Heart of England Forest near Evesham on 13th March and planted 564 trees, in addition to making a donation of £681 to the charitable trust. This was the culmination of a 12-month period supporting the charity, instigated by Halesowenbased Cutter & Co Chartered Accountants which formally merged with Martin G Clark & Co in Bromsgrove in December. In April 2019 Cutter & Co had nominated The Heart of England Forest as its chosen charity for a year. The business agreed to donate the cost of one tree sapling on behalf of all clients who settled their invoices within 15 days

during certain months. Clients who qualified received a certificate of the donation made on their behalf. The Heart of England Forest is a charity registered by the Charity Commission for England and Wales, with its head office in Stratford-upon-Avon. It has an ambitious vision to plant, protect and preserve a new forest, planted with the help and support of anyone wishing to be a part of the project. The forest will become a place of tranquillity and natural beauty for everyone to enjoy. A representative said: “Planting a tree is a great way of connecting with your environment and sowing the seeds of a better world for the next generation.”

Dave Hazlehurst & Kate Jones

Dave Hazlehurst, a director from Martin G Clark, added: “This is a lovely charity to support. We are proud that having traditionally been ʻpaper-pushersʼ, Martin G Clark & Co has not only been transitioning into working paperless but are now actually planting trees rather than using them up. Quite a reversal!” For more information: heartofenglandforest.com

Take Part in Primrose Fundraising Challenge bike and raise money for your local hospice. “Primrose Hospice is continuing to provide many of its vital services but weʼll see a big gap in fundraising with events cancelled or postponed and our charity shops closed. Last year, our Fundraising Team (excluding shops) received £151,000 from March 1 to April 30 but this figure will be drastically reduced this year. People are asked to take part in a fundraising challenge, to help support their local hospice as it sees a surge in demand. Pace for Primrose has been launched as Primrose Hospice continues to provide care and support during the pandemic to palliative care patients and bereaved families. People are being asked to use their allotted exercise time to do a sponsored walk, run, jog or cycle to raise money so the hospice can continue to deliver its services in north east Worcestershire. While Primrose cannot run its groups at the moment including its day hospice,

staff have been busy transforming the service so it can continue to operate safely. However, with events postponed or cancelled fundraising for the hospice will be greatly affected. At the same time, staff are seeing a surge in demand for its services and expect to see more people wishing to access its bereavement services over the coming months. Sally Insley, Fundraising Manager at Primrose Hospice, said: “Pace for Primrose is a really fun challenge which will get people moving and give them something to do while at home. You can walk, run, jump on your rowing machine or exercise

“We need your help to ensure we can continue to deliver our palliative and bereavement services to over 1,000 people living in our community in north east Worcestershire. “We canʼt wait to see what people have decided to do and look forward to seeing their pictures and videos on our dedicated Facebook group too.” People should use their allotted exercise time to take part in the challenge and follow Government guidelines. Toss Delayed: Inspection at Start of June!

By now, we should have been playing our friendly matches prior to starting, at the end of April, our Saturday BDPCL and Worcester League Fixtures and our Sunday Arden League Fixtures. But, along virtually every other sport, we have had to delay the start of the 2020 Season. However, the work on our three grounds continues – cutting, rolling, watering et al, so that, when we are allowed to play once again, all of them will be in first class condition. Off the field, our main sponsor, Gymshark, has

decided to step down and we thank it very much for its generous support for the last three years. In its place, we are delighted to announce that we have a new main sponsor for the 2020 /1/2 Seasons - ANP Training. ANP Training, whose Meeting, Training, Seminar and Hot Desking Venue is located on Buntsford Park Road in Bromsgrove, provides a wide range of Workshops covering Employment Law, Employment Tax, Human Resources and Bespoke Business Development Solutions. We look forward to a mutually beneficial

association. On Sunday 5th July we are due to hold our Music Festival, building on the success of “ Hello Bromsgrove “ last year. However, this depends on the situation with the Lockdown. We will update you on this and when we start playing cricket - see our website and social media. Pandemic Highlights Need for More Carers necessary because we provide full training, with ongoing support and guidance.”

Bromsgrove domiciliary care business, Care Force Ltd, said Covid-19 has highlighted the vital need for more care workers to provide support to the elderly and vulnerable in their own home. The UK was facing a social care crisis before the pandemic with staff shortages a real cause for concern. A recent Timewise report, Caring by Design, noted there are currently 1.5 million people working in the social care sector in England, of which 82% are women. And the combination of an aging population and the associated increase in the number of people with disabilities means that, by 2025, a further 1 million carers would be needed.

Care workers provide a vital role in the community, enabling older people to remain in their own home, thus retaining their independence. Support services include assistance with personal hygiene needs, taking medication and domestic tasks. Carers will also help with shopping, arranging health appointments and taking service-users to community leisure activities. John Hollingsworth, Care Force operations director said: “The care sector is struggling to meet demand due to historic problems recruiting frontline staff. It can be a hugely rewarding job with good career progression opportunities. No previous experience is

John Hollingsworth Care Force operations director

Care Force has experienced a significant increase in job applications over the past few months but it still needs more care professionals. Michelle Coates, care manager, said: “We have a variety of employment opportunities, full and parttime, and urge anyone who would like to know more about a career in care to get in touch.” For more information call 01527 577247 or email enquiries@care-force.co.uk

matches because of the cold weather.

Angelique Dalton, COO at Primrose, explained that the Bromsgrove-based hospice liked to go the extra mile for its patients, taking care of their emotional and practical needs as well as their medical needs.

Knowing how important these matches are to Neil, his clinical lead spoke to Primrose Hospice's chief operating officer Angelique Dalton who managed to organise a box at the stadium for Neil and his friends and family.

"As soon as we learned that rugby was a big part of Neil and Val's lives but sadly he had been missing matches we knew we had to act. Warriors were incredibly accommodating and we would like to say a big thank you to them.”

Neil Leddington

A RUGBY fan and hospice patient who was having difficulty attending matches was given the VIP treatment in early March, thanks to Primrose and Worcester Warriors. Neil Leddington, from Bromsgrove, has been a Warriors fan and season ticket holder for over a decade. He and wife Val were even married at the Warriors ground Sixways in 2012 and had former Warriors lock Craig Gillies attend as a special guest. However, during a clinical appointment at Primrose Hospice, Neil explained he was unable to attend

Neil said: "It was absolutely brilliant. After talking to Dr Douglas about it, within ten days it was all organised. We had a fantastic time." Neil, his wife Val as well as family and friends, watched on as Warriors were beaten by Northampton Saints 10-16 on Friday, 6th March - pre-lockdown.

Warriors Managing Director Peter Kelly said: “We are pleased to learn that Neil enjoyed his visit to Sixways and delighted that we were able to work closely with Primrose Hospice to make the day a success.” To support the hospice, visit primrosehospice.org

From BRUG to BARRUP

Bromsgrove Rail User Group (BRUG) was one of the driving forces in getting both the new Interchange Station completed in 2016 and the Cross City Line Service extended to Bromsgrove in 2018, with the consequent much improved frequency of service to and from the University, the Q.E., Birmingham and beyond. At a recent meeting of BRUG it was agreed that its remit should be widened to include other districts in North East Worcestershire with stations on the Cross City Lines i.e. Barnt Green, Alvechurch and Redditch.

Thus the name of the Group has been changed to Bromsgrove and Redditch Rail User Partnership (BARRUP). The purpose of the Partnership is to improve the services to, and the facilities on, all four stations, thus benefiting all the passengers currently using them. Thus both existing and new passengers will be encouraged to use the train services to travel to and from a wider range of destinations, consequently bringing also economic benefits to a wide range of businesses in North East Worcestershire.

Initially, B.A.R.R.U.P.Ęźs two main aims are: Getting the Cross Country Services to and from the South West of England and South Wales to stop at Bromsgrove. Improving the West Midlands Trains Service to and from Birmingham / Worcester / Hereford, so that two trains an hour stop at Barnt Green and Bromsgrove.

You will find the BARRUP Website at: bromsgroverail.org.uk
