It’s hard to believe that we are starting another new year and that 2020 is now fully upon us, where did 2019 go ?. Anyway, although time really does fly too quickly, we at the Bromsgrove Oracle are now entering our 6th year supporting and promoting local business in our community and we will continue to strive to do our best this year, to help Bromsgrove thrive and continue to be a great place to live and work. Wellbeing News Health Benefits of Shooting for Fun

New Year resolutions aren’t all about dieting.

Why not consider a new activity this year which offers social, physical and wellbeing benefits?

Shooting activities are about far more than simply pulling a trigger. According to a Sport & Recreational Alliance survey in 2016, shooting activities are increasingly being recognised as important for their contribution to peopleʼs health and wellbeing.

Key findings from the survey stated: “Shooting can help get more adults active through sport and physical activity, reduce social isolation and promote personal wellbeing whilst

encouraging people to engage with the natural environment.

Allowing for discipline variations shooting and its associated activities are moderate to high intensity physical activities.”

Vets Launch Doggy Donor Campaign be relaxed in a veterinary environment, be up to date with vaccinations and have never travelled abroad.

Sarah Male, Deputy Head Nurse at Clent Hillsʼ Hagley Practice said: “People donʼt always realise that animals can need a blood transfusion just like humans.

Clent Hills is committed to raising awareness of the importance of dogs donating blood to support sick and injured pets. The health and wellbeing of the donor dog is as important as the dog who requires the blood, which is why only those dogs who meet the criteria can be considered.”

Clent Hills Vets has kicked off the new year with a campaign to encourage local dog owners to register their pet as a blood donor.

Dogs can need blood for a variety of reasons including during some surgical procedures and complicated forms of medical treatment.

Just like with humans, there must be a sufficient period of time between donations, which is why itʼs important

for Clent Hills to compile a list of multiple dog donors.

In emergency situations, especially when time is critical, having a list of local dogs who may be able to donate, could literally save another dogʼs life.

Dog blood donors must meet certain criteria, which includes being fit and healthy; aged between 1 and 8 years; and weighing more than 25kg. They must have a good temperament,

Young Musicians Played to a Packed House Members of band ʻLimitlessʼ

There was standing room only when members of Bromsgrove Rock School took to the stage at Stoke Prior Sports & Country Club on 8 December.

The young musicians were performing in their end of term gig, following 10 weeks of preparation under the guidance of professional musician Brian Hoggard, supported by guitarist Loz Rushton and vocal coach Givvi Flynn.

Junior band ʻInsomniaʼ opened the show with Back in Black by ACDC. The six piece band of youngsters, aged just 9 - 11 years, exuded confidence, fronted by lead singer Tigo who clearly enjoyed taking centre stage.

As the juniors gave way to senior Rock School members the audience was treated to an ecleptic mix of genres from mellow acoutic numbers to thumping heavy metal. Some real talent was on display from both singers and musicians; including Freya, Phoebe and Storm

as vocalistis; Sam and Blake on drums; and Charlie, Cassius and Jake on guitar.

Bromsgrove Rock School welcomes young musicians and singers aged 8 to18.

There are plenty of live performance opportunities at festivals and charity events throughout the year.

Sessions are on Saturday mornings in Bromsgrove.

In Loving Memory of John Singleton Several hundred people paid their respects on 5th December, at the funeral of John Singleton, owner of Singletons Nurseries in Bromsgrove.

Hard work was something he learnt and never forgot from an early age.

On leaving school John undertook an apprenticeship and studied at Pershore Horticultural College.

Johnʼs passion always lay in the world of horticulture and his role in the family business developed with him managing the business and helping to broaden its scope.

He enjoyed building relationships with his customers and the business flourished under his leadership.

John was born in Bridgewater and when he was three years old his mother, Peggy, moved to Harborne with John. They joined her brothers Harry, Jack and Harold Kinder, who ran the family business, established in 1947, 'Kinder Brothers at Harborne Lane Nurseriesʼ.

John attended St Peter's First School and then Harborne Hill School. In his teens he would get up early before going to school to go and buy flowers from the market for the Nursery and for Singletons Florists, a shop in Northfield set up by the uncles, but run by his Mum.

When John relocated the nursery from Harborne to its current Lydiate Ash location the larger site allowed for business expansion, which included more commercial growing, a landscaping division and most recently the opening of the Potting Shed Café, where John loved popping in to chat with customers.

John married Claire, they had two children together and John was a doting Dad. As a family they enjoyed many lovely holidays, including trips to the Far East, the Caribbean and Disneyland Paris.

There was far more to John than being a businessman and family man.He also developed excellent community relationships through his generosity. He supplied the Birmingham District Allotments Association with fertilizer and compost and was hugely supportive of the Birmingham Children's Hospital for many years, supporting charity events and auctions. In 2017, in celebration of Singletons Nurseries 70th anniversary, John and Claire hosted a Red Balloon Ball for 160 people which raised almost ÂŁ8000 for the Hospital to benefit the oncology unit.

John always supported schools, churches and charities with raffle prizes. He regularly donated flowers to St PeterĘźs Church in Harborne, affiliated to the primary school he had attended as a child, to ensure the Church was beautifully decorated, especially at festival times. His funeral service was held at the Church on 5th December.

John's untimely death in November was a huge loss for his family, friends, work colleagues, and the wider community. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The first ever North Worcestershire Business Awards were launched in 2019 by North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration (NWedR) and North Worcestershire Business Leaders (NWBL).

More than 170 business leaders from across North Worcestershire attended the first NWBA awards ceremony on 28 November, at Hogarths Stone Manor.

Six winners, selected from 54 entrants to the awards and 20 finalists, took home crystal trophies from the prestigious event. BBC Presenter Joanne Malin was the event host.

The judges said that the finalists and the winners reflected “an impressive range of businesses, all showcasing products and

services that really stand out. They are a credit to North Worcestershire.”

Care Force Supporting Local Age UK

Bromsgrove home care business Care Force Ltd pledged its support last November for the local Men in Sheds scheme, which helps tackle loneliness and isolation in older people.

Bromsgrove Men in Sheds is run by the local Age UK and Care Force sponsored the groupsʼ ʻShed Shareʼ scheme, which helps raise money to contribute to the rent and running costs of the groupʼs base (known as the Shed) on the Metal & Ores Industrial Estate.

Following a meeting with the Shedders, Care Force was so impressed with the work the group do that it decided to nominate Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch and Wyre Forest (BRWF)

as its official charity for 2020. Staff at Care Force are now exploring different ways to raise money for Age UK BRWF, which is a local self-funding charity.

Care Force Operations Director, John Hollingsworth, said: “We are delighted to be fundraising for Age UK. As a care provider for older people we fully understand the importance of a personcentred approach, offering services to people in their home to encourage and promote independence.

There is a synergy between the services we offer and those offered by Age UK BRWF.”

Age UK BRWF relies heavily on donations, as well as income from its charity shops. £5 helps pay for a lonely person to receive a Weekly Care Call for a month. £10 helps pay for a Befriending Volunteer to visit an older person at home. £20 helps support

We are seeking a volunteer for our book shop at Shrub Hill Station Worcester, who can support two young men with learning difficulties to continue their placement at Onside’s second hand bookshop. We also have opportunities at our Great Malvern Railway Station book shop.

The volunteer’s role is to check that they are okay and to identify any tasks they might do when the shop is quiet .Ideally, you may have some experience of supporting adults with learning difficulties.

9am – 4pm - Monday to Thursday 9am – 4pm Friday Volunteers can do mornings or afternoons or all day to suit.
