2. Welcome to the September & October edition of The Bromsgrove Oracle. Here we are heading into Autumn after what could only be described as a tumultuous last few months, that have affected so many people in so many different ways but hopefully we are coming through, albeit very slowly. It is heartening to see many businesses opening their doors and welcome back customers but for many it is not “Business as usual” and the road back to normal could still be quite challenging for us all. In this latest edition of our community magazine we have some lovely features from Stoke Prior Club, Hanbury Watches, Clent Hills Vets, Bromsgrove Sporting, Care Force, New Road Dental Practice and many more, all showing that Bromsgrove really is a great place to live and work, even in such difficult times. My mantra is and always has been to promote the vital link between local businesses and our community and if we do this successfully then the future will indeed be bright. Please don’t forget to help Bromsgrove by “Buying Local” and support our local community and our local economy. Our magazine is and always has been a fantastic place to promote and find out more about local businesses, events, news and information from around our community (all linked to and promoted on our website and social media). – Why not enter or “Find Wol” competition for your chance to win £50.00 - Simply find the hidden image of our friendly Owl “Wol” inside the magazine, go to our website www. thebromsgroveoracle.co.uk and enter the competition for your chance to win, it’s very easy to enter and like the saying goes “you’ve got to be in it, to win it”……Good Luck “Find Wol” - Last Issue’s Lucky Winner was Janice Johnson well done Janice and we hope you enjoy your prize. We really do enjoy providing our magazine for you, we value your contributions and your feedback and please don’t hesitate to provide me with your suggestions for future editions. Hope you enjoy this latest edition and don’t forget YOU can provide YOUR events, news and information too ?. Until next time. Lyndon.

Entertainment News BAA Sees Great Opportunity for Artrix

As a District, Bromsgrove more than punches its weight in providing a wide range of cultural activities for the enjoyment of its residents, and many of these activities attract visitors from all over the United Kingdom and even abroad, thus benefiting the local economy. People throughout the District, whether their interests are in cinema, comedy, dance, theatre, words and music of all genres, have felt diminished culturally by the closure and liquidation of Artrix. Bromsgrove Arts Alive (BAA), which represents 50 Arts, Cultural and Heritage

Organisations, as well as many individuals in the District, congratulates the council on its prompt action in purchasing the assets and fixtures of the venue from the liquidator. BAA see the temporary closure of Artrix as a great opportunity to re-purpose it to create a 21st Century Arts Centre. It believes that proactive steps to define a new operating model for Artrix and establish a new operator with a long term funding model must be taken now to ensure that the venue is ready to reopen when circumstances allow.

While recognising the need for long term commercial viability, this must be pursued whilst providing access and opportunity to the myriad local arts and cultural activities, as was the philosophy of Director Andy Woods, who contributed so much to the Venueʟs success in its first 10 years. The council has stated they believe the key to the process will be to engage with the local community. BAA is ready to work with the council to redefine the role of Artrix, help develop a proper business plan and acquire the necessary funding to achieve what all of us want – a thriving and successful Artrix.

The King’s School, Worcester Welcomes New Headmaster The King’s School, Worcester is delighted to welcome a new foundation headmaster, Gareth Doodes, to lead its family of three schools from September. Gareth joins King’s Worcester from Dover College, where he was Headmaster for the last five years. During his time at Dover College he launched Project 150, an exciting development plan, with investment in teaching, learning, buildings and facilities both for the Junior and the Senior Schools. Previously Head of Milton Abbey in Dorset, Gareth started his career at Taunton School as a history teacher and then as a Housemaster at Oakham School. He has coached sport and has always been involved with music and drama. Gareth was educated at Eastbourne College, where he was a music scholar, and gained an MA in Modern History at the University of St Andrews. A keen cyclist and swimmer, he plays the piano and organ and has extensive choral singing experience. He is married to Jessica, who returns to her home county of Worcestershire, and they have two young children, both of whom will become pupils at the school. As a family the Doodes love spending time exploring the outdoors.

Keen to build on the legacy of the late Matthew Armstrong, the School’s Headmaster until August last year. Gareth added, ‘It is an immense privilege to be the Head of The King’s Foundation. Matthew gave great leadership to King’s and as his successor I want to build on his legacy, strengthening the Foundation and ensuring that King’s long-term success, growth and development continues. King’s strong community, exceptional co-curricular provision, fantastic setting, links to the Cathedral and pursuit of academic excellence have inspired Jess and me. The affection for the school is clear from everyone I have met, and I am excited and privileged to be leading the King’s family forward over the many years ahead.’ Find out more about Gareth’s aspirations for King’s Worcester, at the King’s forthcoming Open Morning’s in September and October. The Growth of a Business Inspired by

ʻHanburyʼ founder Paul Masters

A local entrepreneur drew inspiration from Hanbury Woods, when he launched his iconic timepiece brand ‘Hanbury’ three years ago. Paul Masters, who lives in Bromsgrove, spent his childhood exploring the woodland at Piperʼs Hill and Dodderhill Commons locally known as Hanbury Woods. When he left Droitwich Spa High School he undertook a number of jobs, but his real passion lay in design. He saw the potential of using natural wood combined with his love of watches to create a unique fashion brand.

In October 2017 Paul embarked on a new and brave career direction, launching a Kickstarer campaign to raise £10k to realise his vision. Over 157 backers resulted in £18,500 raised and Paulʼs dream came to life when he launched ʻHanburyʼ with three stylish watch designs hand crafted from natural wood and high grade stainless steel. The original pledgers received one of the limited edition watches.

Just three years later the ʻHanburyʼ timepiece collection has increased from three designs to eighteen, which includes 2 new automatic models - a black edition with natural oak face, and a silver edition with white maple face. These were funded by a second Kickstarter campaign which again exceeded its target. The business also introduced a range of stylish wooden frame sunglasses in May 2020.

13.

Hanbury Woods

Paul said: “The ʻHanburyʼ brand is all about unique products - each watch and pair of sunglasses is individually different due to the natural wood we use and its character grain markings.” Paul is keen to stress that he only uses materials from sustainable sources. ʻHanburyʼ is also in partnership with ʻTrees for the Futureʼ in Senegal. For every watch sold 5 trees are planted and the Forest Garden Programme helps alleviate hunger and reduces greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Paul explained: “Our goal is to help improve the livelihoods of impoverished farmers by revitalising degraded land, one watch at a time!”

Despite having established an iconic brand, representing premium quality products, the ʻHanburyʼ collection is priced for affordability with a starting price of £149 for the Classic range of watches and £79 for the sunglasses. A 2 pack of reusable branded face masks is free with every order over £50. Currently purchases can only be made online but Paul is in discussion with a number of retailers and hopes his products will be available in selected shops soon. For special offers and product updates follow ʻHanburyʼ on facebook and instagram.

Charity News Primrose is Planning Santa Fun Run

The ‘elves’ are currently putting together plans for this year’s Santa Fun Run event to make it as safe as possible for participants. As the Bromsgrove Oracle went to press, the hospice was still working on whether it would be a virtual event or take place as usual but with safety measures to keep runners safe. Last year, around 300 people joined in the fun at Arrow Valley Lake in December to raise over £7,000 for the hospice.

However, things will have to be slightly different this year to make sure the event is Covid safe. Sally Insley, Primrose Hospice fundraising manager, said: “Weʼre busy in Santaʻs workshop deciding how this yearʼs event should operate. I know how much everyone looks forward to the Santa Fun Run so we want to keep everyone informed as soon as we know what we plan to do. “Primroseʼs Santa Fun Run really brings the community together at

Christmas time and we plan for it to take place in some way this year. “The money raised really does make a big difference to the families in our community who have been bereaved. It also helps provides care and support to people with life-limiting conditions and their families.” Anyone interested in taking part should email: info@primrosehospice.org with the subject line Santa Fun Run. Once Father Christmas has given the green light, you will be emailed an update.

Business News Ringing the Change at Accountancy Firm Directors Dave Hazlehurst, Paul Cutter & Kate Jones

In December Halesowen based Cutter & Co Ltd merged with the longestablished Bromsgrove accountancy firm Martin G Clark & Co, in Aston Fields. A subsequent phased period of transition has been taking place, to develop the business and create more efficient and environmentally friendly working practices. The Covid-19 pandemic brought about some of the planned changes ahead of schedule, such as the introduction of Zoom and Teams, for meetings with clients. This has helped maintain a personal, faceto-face rapport.

Digital accounting tools are also being introduced, to automate manual bookkeeping tasks, helping clients maintain their books more efficiently. Packages include QuickBooks, Xero and Sage Cloud. For those new to the online software applications, Cutter & Co will be delivering training via webinar workshops. Director Paul Cutter said: “Cloud-based systems like these significantly reduce time spent on data entry whilst eliminating human error. Small process changes can notably improve accounting productivity and help increase business profitability for clients.

The best way to achieve sustainable change is to do it in a controlled way. We are committed to delivering even greater value as we move forward with more flexible and efficient support for all our clients. Martin G Clark & Co offers a comprehensive range of accountancy services which look after all the financial compliance requirements so business owners can focus on their own core business activities. Bromsgrove MP Congratulates Care Force

Sajid Javid MP with [L] Jo Jacobs (service co-ordinator) and [R] John Hollingsworth (manager)

Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid visited Care Force in July to congratulate the home care provider on being voted one of the ‘Top 20’ home care providers in the West Midlands for the second time (Care Force also won this award in 2018). The award was granted to Care Force Ltd by homecare.co.uk, a UK Home Care review website. Every year homecare.co.uk compiles thousands of reviews of home care agencies looking at elements such as the quality of care, overall standard, management, staff as well as value for money.

The Awards highlight the most recommended home care providers in each region of the UK, based on the review score achieved by the end of April 2020. Care providers must also be compliant with their relevant regulatory authority. Sajid Javid said: “I was delighted to hear that a care service company in my constituency has been awarded such an honour. It is a remarkable tribute and thoroughly deserved. I am so pleased that the hard work of all the staff at Care Force has been formally recognised.” Care Force was established in 1992 and is the townʼs

only independent home care provider. It employs sixty care workers who deliver a versatile range of services, helping older people maintain their independence living in their own home. Michelle Coates, care manager, said: “Our team of carers are committed to providing the very best level of home care. In some cases during the pandemic they have been the only link some people have had with the local community. Winning this award pays tribute to their hard work.” For info about Care Force call 01527 577247 or email enquiries@care-force.co.uk

BARRUP Campaigns for Better Services & Facilities

Two July dates in recent years are of major significance in the improvement of rail services in North-East Worcestershire, giving both economic and environmental benefits to people and businesses in the District. On July 12 in 2016 BromsgroveĘźs new station commenced operations, offering a manned ticket office, two ticket machines on the concourse, several customer information screens, parking for 350 cars and a range of destinations which can be accessed by buses arriving / departing from the Station.

On July 29 2018, the Cross City Line Service to and from Bromsgrove opened, and thus the frequency of trains to and from University and New Street Stations increased from one an hour to four an hour. So gradually, progress is being made in improving the rail connectivity, but much needs still to be done. In addition to the further improvements required to the actual train services, as detailed in the May / June and July / August editions of the Oracle by BARRUP, significant upgrades need to be made to the facilities on the stations.

For example at Barnt Green Station there is the need for a lift for disabled passengers and better signage. At Alvechurch station there is the ongoing issue of the Car Park and at Bromsgrove there are inadequate on-platform passenger shelters and a total absence of any platform walkway weather protection et al. BARRUP will continually press the alphabet soup of relevant authorities for better services and faciities for both passengers and businesses using the four stations in the Partnership.

Bromsgrove Walking Sports Centre Road end. We have had a great response. The football, following Football Association guidelines, is now virtually normal football, meaning we can play carefully controlled matches. Netball is not available yet though we hope to get guidance soon.

“Fun, Friendship and Fitness” is a very apt motto for Bromsgrove’s Walking Sports Centre. Since it opened in January 2020 (before they had to suspend operations due to Covid-19) they had seen over 150 residents playing a variety of walking sports – football, hockey and netball. Alan ormley takes up the story Our participants have been in constant contact

throughout the last four months asking when we can get going again.

We had hoped to have walking versions of tennis, cricket, rounders, and rugby too, but they are now planned for 2 21. Session times:

After taking advice from the National overning Bodies of the sports we restarted on 22 uly with socially distanced versions of football and hockey. Our normal venues Bromsgrove ockey Astro and the Ryland Centre cannot host us yet as they are going through phased reopening so we meet up in Sanders Park, the Whitford

Walking Football Wednesdays 7-8pm Walking Hockey Thursdays 7-8pm Sessions are £3.00 each. For more information contact Alan Gormley: Mobile: 07731369942 email: alan@sport-edge. co.uk
