Because working alone can be daunting and occasionally demoralising, I thought I would attend a few networking events.

I wrongly assumed business networking was a way to 驶hard sell始 and that attendees would have bags of tricks to entice me and waive fists full of leaflets under my nose. I am relieved to report that productive networking is not like this at all.

There are businesses that have a promotional stand and who talk about their product or service; they deserve to do this because they have paid for the privilege.

What they don始t do is make you buy something for the sake of it, as their marketing is usually geared to the topic of a particular networking event.

Those who are not exhibiting are attending to seek information, make useful contacts and enjoy conversation with likeminded people.

Networking is not just for the brave; it始s for people who work alone or in teams, who want to communicate with others and share their knowledge.

You will leave inspired, having made some connections with people who want to help you and who may even tell others about you and your business to help expand your own individual network.

Here at Coughton we’ve had a brilliant year and we thought it would be a good idea to ask members of the team what their favourite memory was from 2015.

We thought it would be nice to share these moments with you.

Bill, our Website Administrator, says his favourite moment was finding a long forgotten glass negative.

Sunday 6 March, 11am 5pm Treat Mum to a delicious afternoon tea in the Coughton Kitchen Restaurant.

Saturday 26 – Monday 28 March, 11am – 4pm, £3.00 per trail.

Family Easter trail; with chocolate egg, outdoor games and take-home crafts.

‘Resting in a Kodak photo paper box the glass negative showed an old car in the Stableyard at Coughton and a gentleman in the driver’s seat who we have recently discovered was the Chauffer, Joseph Serrell.’

Rebecca, our Conservation and Engagement Manager says her favourite memory is the Christmas tree in the Saloon.

‘It’s 21 feet high and took 11 people and 1 chainsaw to get it in position. With a little help from our longest ladder and a bamboo pole we got the lights and decorations up there. It’s the biggest tree we’ve ever had, and we’ve had amazing feedback.’

Beat the January blues at Artrix With Christmas over and winter in full swing, there’s a chance to brighten up your January by starting a new hobby and making friends at Artrix.

From 5th January onwards, the Bromsgrove arts venue will be running a series of courses and workshops for adults and children.

Adults can try Ballet and Belly Dancing, Stand up Comedy with comedian and writer Theo Theobald or learn some sparkling songs at the SongStars Showchoir. The Showchoir is led by Estelle Williams, a professional teacher and former stage singer.

Future stage stars aged 6-9 years can take a bow at the Out of the Box Juniors acting courses on Tuesday evenings.

The venue also hosts Out of the Box Seniors on Saturday afternoons for 10-18 year olds.

For young singers, 5-9 yrs, thereʼs a Little Songstars Showchoir. The Songstars Junior Showchoir caters for ages 10-15. For aged 16+ there is a Songstars Adult Showchoir. All choir sessions run on Thursday evenings with a chance to learn great songs and take part in fun performances.

The Adult Ballet Beginners Class is an excellent for those who have never tried it before. The intermediate class includes some pointe work, floor exercises and barre work. The Belly Dancing class is for all levels and although it is low impact, it helps build core strength and increases flexibility.

Theoʼs Comedy Skool commences 26th January - offering would-be comedians the chance to hone their skills and develop a stage presence.

TC Peppercorn, Artrixʼ Engagement and Learning Co-Ordinator says: “These courses and workshops offer a fantastic opportunity to anyone who fancies a new challenge in 2016. We hope that people will come along and try a taster session before booking”.

What is personal resilience and why is it important?

In its simplest terms, personal resilience is the ability to stay physically and psychologically bouncy regardless of what life may throw at you.

So, when itʼs a wet Monday morning in November, the kids donʼt want to go to school, the dogʼs been sick on the new carpet, the car wonʼt start and your most important project at work looks like growing arms and legs, resilience allows you to find the reserves that help you to deal with each issue with grace and alacrity without allowing negative thoughts and feelings to destroy your equilibrium.

In fact, by making small changes to the way you think and feel and also to the way you approach living, you will find you can get more done and experience things positively rather than feeling like the world is against you.

By paying attention to how you treat our physical, psychological and spiritual selves you can put ourselves in the best possible position to roll with the punches and lead the bounciest life possible.

Planning permission granted for district’s new leisure centre

Members of Bromsgrove District Councilʼs Planning Committee granted planning permission for the development of the districtʼs new leisure centre, on School Drive in Bromsgrove, at their meeting on December 7, 2015.

The approved plans featured changes made after feedback from residents in the final consultation in October, including extra spectator seating, showers, and baby changing space, and a new layout for the foyer and café Welcoming the decision, the district councilʼs portfolio holder for Leisure Cllr Rod Laight said: “We welcome the committeeʼs decision and we can now move forward with the exciting plans.

Weʼre delighted to be able to build new and improved facilities in the face of unprecedented reductions in public spending.”

Facilities will include: 25m six lane main pool.

15m learner pool with moveable floor.

Climbing wall.

100-station fitness suite.

School Children Build a New Home For Local Ducks Ducks living on a pond on the Oakalls estate in Bromsgrove have been given a brand new home to keep them warm this winter, thanks to students from St Bedeʼs Catholic Middle School (Academy) in Redditch.

The previous duck house had almost completely disintegrated and Cllr Caroline Spencerʼs attempts to find a local carpenter to build a new one failed. An approach was then made by a resident from the Oakalls to the Head of Technology at St Bedeʼs, Luke Twigg.

Mr Twigg felt it was a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn new skills whilst creating something special for the local community. He assembled a team of six student volunteers who worked on the project as an extra-curricular technology assignment during lunch breaks.

The students drew technical plans for approval by the Council.

They identified and purchased the materials they needed and explored buoyancy aids and how to stabilise the floating platform.

The new duck house was floated on the pond by Bromsgrove District Councilʼs Leisure and Cultural Services last November.

“The students had many issues to consider beyond the build process itself,” says Luke Twigg.

“The project also helped them realise that technology has a real place in their living environment rather than it being an abstract notion taught only in schools.”
