RECIPE FEATURE

BEEF BARRANCA Salvatore Barranca has been a personality in the restaurant at Hogarths Stone Manor Hotel for over 15 years. His modern British style of cooking is enjoyed by everyone who visits the hotelʼs Dining Room.

Beef Barranca is a flambé dish named after Barranca himself in recognition of his hard work and reputation with the hotelʼs regular customers.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 oz. Beef Medallions • Diced onions • 1/4 mushrooms • A jug of thin red wine jus • Double cream • Worcestershire sauce • Salt and Pepper • Sherry • Vodka • Seasonal Vegetables • Sauté New Potatoes

METHOD Seal the beef medallions.

Season with salt and pepper.

Remove from pan and place to one side.

Add onions and mushrooms and sauté off.

Add vodka and reduce.

Flame with sherry, adding thin jus afterwards.

Reduce by half and add the cream.

Season and return beef to the pan to cook to your preference.

Serve in the middle of the plate with a pot of seasonal vegetables and a pot of saute potatoes.

Bromsgrove School’s GECO team win 2016 Regional Young Enterprise Presentation Award Bromsgrove School's Young Enterprise team competed at the Regional Final, held in Worcester on Thursday 28th April.

The Bromsgrove team had progressed through to the Regional Finals after a very strong performance in the area competition, where they won an amazing five awards. In all, 47 schools competed for the Herefordshire and Worcestershire region titles.

I am extremely proud of GECO; all of the team members dedicated a significant amount of time to running their business and always faced adversity with positivity and creativity. Many business lessons have been learned over the course of the year, as well as earning themselves a respectable amount of profit too.

Team ʻGecoʼ, were supported through their efforts during the year by local businesses representatives Lyndon Stokes (The Best of Bromsgrove) and Kam Rai (Kip McGrath). The two advisors helped them to build their brand and really hone their business skills. The team performed extremely well at the Regional Finals and despite not progressing through to the next level of the competition they were delighted to be awarded the Best Presentation of the evening.

Coughton Court is delighted to announce the return of the annual duck race along the River Arrow alongside an exciting array of activities for families to enjoy in the great outdoors on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June.

The Coughton annual duck race is a favourite for families and is back this year by popular demand. This is the perfect opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day and sponsor a duck at Coughton’s unique outdoor event. The Potting Shed Café & Restaurant

NEW at Singletons Nurseries

The opening of a new café and restaurant at Singletons Nurseries in Bromsgrove brings a delightful new venue to the local area - the perfect place to eat, drink and relax.

The Potting Shed opened on April 11. It offers plenty of rustic charm with itʼs well crafted wooden interior, which is offset beautifully by a combination of crystal chandeliers and contemporary lighting.

The extensive menu, available from 9am until 4.30pm seven days a week, features breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas, cakes and Sunday lunch. Hot food is served until 3.00pm.

Sunday lunch is already proving very popular. The traditional roast dinner offers succulent locally

sourced meats and seasonal vegetables, with all the trimmings.

Diners can take their own wine to accompany their meal.

Afternoon high tea is also receiving great reviews. Available 12 noon - 4pm, visitors can enjoy a selection of finger sandwiches, homemade scones and cakes with locally sourced preserves and unlimited tea or coffee - served on vintage china. Success for Stage Struck Kids

Students from the Bromsgrove Stagecoach school are celebrating following their excellent results for solo exams in Musical Theatre and Individual Acting Skills. 31 children performed individually before an external examiner from Trinity College London.

Each student performed prerehearsed material before being given a number of improvisation tasks and a brief interview by the examiner. All of the children passed with sixteen awarded merit and twelve gaining the highest attainment possible – distinction.

Trinityʼs Grade 6 - 8 exams can contribute towards higher education through the allocation of UCAS points.

Eleven year old Cameron Dews, who has attended Stagecoach for seven years, achieved the highest mark of all those who took part, with an impressive score of 93%.

“I was feeling poorly on the day of the exam but I didnʼt want to miss it,” says Cameron. “I was really nervous when I first started at Stagecoach but Iʼm much more confident now and love the classes.”

Family Business Celebrates 70th Anniversary

Cupitt Jeweller, Bromsgrove’s longest established family jewellers, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.

The business has been run by Åsa Cupitt since the sad passing of her husband, Simon, in 2013. She has given the shop a fresh new look, re-opened the onsite workshop and created a stylishly relaxing wedding and commissions room.

Classes to help those who’ve had a fall One year on and Strength and Mobility classes across the district are still going strong but more residents are being urged to get involved.

The Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire (SPHW) in partnership with Bromsgrove District and Redditch Borough Councils have been running strength and balance classes for just over a year - designed to help anyone who has had a fall or feels unsteady on their feet.

The classes are designed to improve peopleʼs strength and balance whilst increasing confidence to become more active. Hour-long classes are held in community venues across Redditch and Bromsgrove.

SPHW, the council and class instructors, are calling for more residents to get involved to improve their health, stability and independence and avoid becoming a statistic.

With 30 per cent of over 65ʼs who live in the community falling each year – there could be as many as 32,000 older people falling in Worcestershire every year.

By 2025 it is estimated that there will be 8,700 falls in Bromsgrove and in Redditch 6,000.

Strength and balance class instructor Holly Cook, said: “The classes are designed to help improve participantsʼ muscles and bone strength as well as their balance and stability.

The classes can have a big impact on the participantsʼ confidence, which in turn can help in reducing the number of falls they have but also to enable them to live more independently.

The classes can have a great social element to them as well allowing them to meet new people and make friends.”

In Redditch and Bromsgrove there are currently ten strength and balance classes.

Hogarths Stone Manor Restored with a Modern Twist When Andy and Helena Hogarths purchased Stone Manor from the Dunn family, in February 2015, it was widely assumed that nothing would change.

However, the new owners had great plans for the hotel and a refurbishment project was scheduled for early 2016.

Prior to embarking on the main project the landscaped grounds and gardens were enhanced, the outdoor swimming pool was filled in and the stunning “Pump Rooms” (an outdoor events and wedding venue) was created.

The interior of the hotel was refreshed and cleaned.

Following this work, in January 2016, half the hotel was closed and the refurbishment of the bedrooms, reception and public areas commenced. This work will be completed by the end of May. Guests visiting the hotel can now enjoy the stylish new Dining Room, the bar - renamed “The Hive”, and relax for a quintessential English afternoon tea experience served in “The Burrow” (which was previously the rather ʻtiredʼ residentsʼ lounge).

Chill Skills Help Children Prepare for SATs Children at a number of Worcestershire schools benefited from learning ‘Chill Skills’ as they prepared for their SATs in May.

Go Wellbeing CIC, based in Kidderminster, offers the Chill Skills programme to help promote a positive mental attitude, whilst providing students with important coping strategies. Students are introduced to techniques to help them overcome anxieties and improve concentration and confidence, helping them to feel calmer and so reach their personal potential.

The 3 weekly sessions include relaxation breathing, visualisation, peer massage, the ʻthought / feeling / take controlʼ triangle, and an understanding of what happens to the body when people feel under pressure.

Teaching staff also recognise the benefits of the Programme. A teacher from a Worcestershire Primary School commented: “The children became more aware of their thoughts and feelings and how to manage them.”

A class of 28 Year 6 children participated in the Chill Skills programme at a school in Stourport on Severn. Afterwards, 20 of the children said they felt confident and ready to sit their SATs. Six said they felt better about the SATs and only two expressed ongoing concerns about the tests.

One child at a Kidderminster primary school said: “It was amazing and I would like to do it again.”
