Remain! “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 (NIV) This scripture verse is one we all need to come back to on a daily basis isn’t it? We need to remember to draw from the well each day in the knowledge that it is only in and through Christ’s power that we can hope to be all we are called to be In Christ Jesus!

Brian McLaren Brian D McLaren is a well-known American author, speaker and pastor, involved in mentoring church planters and pastors, as well as networking innovative Christian leaders, thinkers and activists. Probably best known for being one of the most prominent voices in the ‘emergent church’ movement, Signpost International’s Kerry Dixon interviewed Brian McLaren for Dundee4Christ, ahead of Brian’s visit to Scotland in December... Brian, for the readers who have not heard of the ‘emergent church’ movement, could you give us a brief overview of what the movement is about, and where it finds itself today? I believe the church has been through several emergences, 6

amongst them: in the book of Acts, a small Jewish movement emerges and begins to accept Gentiles; an emergence in the second century into the intellectual world of GrecoRoman thought; Martin Luther led another emergence, as did Menno Simons. Similarly, in today’s world, there is a conversation among innovative Christian leaders who believe that some sectors at least of the Christian community must emerge from a five-hundred-year embeddedness with modernity to engage with and help create a new way of thinking, learning, believing, and working together. In your book “A New Kind of Christian”, the character Dan faces a crisis that starts him on a new

spiritual journey. To what extent does this book take us into your own story? Was there a catalyst (crisis) that caused you to rethink your faith and, if so, was it the crisis that caused you to rethink your faith, or the rethinking of your faith that caused the crisis? Dan is a composite of a lot of people I met when I began speaking out about some of my own struggles. The catalyst, for me, was my evangelistic impulse. The church I pastored always had a steady stream of “unchurched” people coming in, and many of them were asking questions that I had to admit I didn’t have good answers for. The smartest Christians I knew of at the time - like Francis Schaeffer and C. S. Lewis - didn’t seem to have satisfying answers for these kinds of questions either. So I tried - in the spirit of 1 Peter 3, where we’re told to respond to people’s honest questions with gentleness and respect - to take their questions seriously. Eventually their questions became my questions and that forced me to rethink a lot of things. It was a scary process, but I’m glad it happened.

Many people who have read your books and resonated with some of the ideas contained within them feel trapped between prevailing church culture and their desire to embrace a new culture. What advice would you give to people who find themselves in this situation? First, I would encourage people to stay in touch with God. We need deep roots in God, nourished by spiritual practices, to sustain us. It’s tempting to let go of God when we’re asking questions, but we need to realize we’re questioning our ideas about God and Christianity ... that’s not the same as questioning God. Second, people need a few friends with whom they can open their hearts freely and be honest, with whom they can read and think and question and struggle in solidarity. Third, they need to be patient. Church cultures don’t change overnight. In fact, if we recall the old story of leaving Egypt, it may be that many of us are the generation that heads into the wilderness and prepares the way for the next generation to create a new culture of faith. We can’t wait for the

church to change to begin living well. We simply need to live the ways of the kingdom of God, as we grow and learn, without waiting for it to be popular or the norm.

Interview

There has been some criticism of the emergent church becoming insular, in that its focus can be so much on the ‘conversation’ that a practical outworking of our faith can often be overlooked! How would you suggest we guard against this? I haven’t encountered this criticism. If anything, I’ve heard the opposite - we’re too “out there.” I suppose there are some people who spend way too much time on the internet and not enough time out there in the real world. On the positive side, I see the conversation moving - as all good conversations do - to new territory. Where the conversation was largely about the church and how to “do church” some years ago, it then seemed to move to theology and our understanding of the gospel, and more recently has been moving to justice and our role in the world. So, I’d encourage people not to get stuck, but to let the conversation keep moving along. Many people feel that postmodernism represents a disintegration of society and it is therefore seen as a threat, however you seem to embrace postmodernism and see it as an opportunity! If that is true how do you keep a balanced view, and what are the opportunities of postmodernism that we should embrace? Postmodernism is a highly contested term, meaning different

things to different people. But I do believe that modernity has captivated the church, and the Christian faith in the West has fallen into devastating kinds of modernist approaches - rationalism, consumerism, colonialism, individualism, etc. I certainly don’t want to advocate a similar syncretism with whatever postmodernism may be or become, but I do hope we can soberly face and repent of the way we have turned the way of Jesus into an institution of modern Western Civilization, and I hope we can regain a high vision of the kingdom of God. Other than the Bible (or a Brian McLaren book!) what books would you recommend that people read, and what books are you reading at the moment? Phyllis Tickle’s new book ‘The Great Emergence’ (Baker 2008) is extremely important. I highly recommend it. Doug Pagitt’s ‘A Christianity Worth Believing’ and Tony Jones’ ‘The New Christians’ are also very worthwhile. I read lots of theology, but I always try to have a novel or book of poetry next to my bed as well - I just finished a really good science fiction novel called ‘The Doomsday Book’ by Connie Willis and, for a theology book, I’m enjoying African theologian Kwame Bediako’s ‘Theology and Identity’. You can hear Brian speak at ‘A New Kind of Christian – an Evening with Brian McLaren and others’, to be held at Letham St Marks in Perth, on Friday 5th December 2008 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at the door for £5.

Hot Chocolate Trust is a Dundee based youth project which works with marginalised young people who hang out on the grass outside the city churches. Starting out 7 years ago, some volunteers from The Steeple went out onto the grass and offered the young people hot chocolate (the drink) to get to know them, and the project has been growing ever since. Now there are 4 staff members and around 20 volunteers who, from week to week, work with around 150 young people. The young people are aged12-21, and most of them face significant issues in their lives, ranging from family breakup, pregnancy, alcohol and drug misuse, unemployment, abuse of various kinds, low education attainment, homelessness, and very low selfesteem. Hot Chocolate offers 3 open doors sessions (Tuesday 10

Feature

Hot Chocolate Trust nights, Wednesday nights, Saturday afternoons), group work sessions, one-on-one support sessions, summer and Easter programmes, and residential events. Coming from the perspective that each person is created in the image of God, Hot Chocolate embraces a holistic mission, desiring to see the young people develop mentally, emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. We believe that Jesus did all this: he got alongside people, had compassion, took risks, became vulnerable, loved, asked questions, trusted, challenged, forgave, sacrificed, and walked with them for the long haul. We seek to replicate this approach in our

11

relationship with the young people, and introduce them to this Jesus along the way.

July/August saw our seventh Exodus (our three week summer programme), which creatively explored the theme of ‘hope’ through art, music, video, trips, meals, and discussions. In week 1 we looked at the current reality of our lives, the city, and the world. Week 2 considered what our dreams for these things are. And week 3 explored whether these dreams could be achieved, and what our role (and God’s role) in them was. During this time we saw many young people catch glimpses of hope, and make very practical steps forward in their often messy and complicated lives. Goals were identified and encouraged. Confidence was built. CVs

were written. College places were applied for. Portfolios were developed. Money was raised for charity. Referrals were made to more specialist agencies. Work experience was set up. (Positive!) newspaper articles were written. As well as all this, we encountered very varied perspectives on all what ‘hope’ is. Some young people completely rejected the concept of hope, writing it off as ‘wishful thinking’ or considering the world to be too bad for anyone to be able do anything about it. Others spoke of a supernatural sense of longing for something better. We bought one young person their first Bible, and another their first Christian book. These are all exciting steps forward on their faith journeys, and we consider it a privilege to be involved in their lives – both in a spiritual and practical context. The kingdom’s near.

CLC Bookshop CLC Bookshops next to Scott’s the Kilt shop in Whitehall Crescent is more than just a Christian Bookshop. It has been in Dundee since 1952 supplying Christian books, greetings cards, and music.

So CLC is more than just a chain of Christian bookshops? Yes. Today we have 15 shops in the UK and work in 55+ countries, using books as a means of bringing people to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and for the building up of the church. The original reason for the couple opening their Colchester shop was to combat the literature that was being left around the houses by the cults. That still is part of CLC’s ministry. A bookshop is a neutral place where folk can come with their queries about any aspect of Christianity. Most of our

shops will have a prayer ministry in which many of our customers will be involved. Often we give out gospels and booklets to enquirers. The work in the UK has helped to open and support bookshops and book mobiles in Africa, India, Asia, and South America. At our recent International Council meetings in Bangkok a new vision statement for CLC was drawn up. To multiply: 1. Bookshops that impact the community; 2. The Publication and Distribution of the Word of God and Christian media that transforms lives; 3. The Resourcing of projects worldwide. Quoting from our International Leader, Neil Wardrope: “This is a very challenging vision that needs to be prayed through… Two components of our work are business and mission. We want to do our business in such a way that there are spiritual results. I calculate that some 3 million people pass through our stores each year. What a responsibility! What an opportunity!” John Piper, an excellent author says, ‘Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is.’ That for me is what it’s all about. How did CLC come to be in Dundee? 2 ladies, May Ramsay, a rather formidable lady by all accounts, and her colleague, initially using CLC Aberdeen as a base, distributed Christian literature around the housing estates of Dundee. Premises were acquired in the Nethergate and being close to the University, Christian students found fellowship and challenge in the CLC shop – and at times helped the ladies with their mobile work. Liz and I came to CLC

22

Dundee in 2000 having worked in Ipswich, Southampton and our Alresford warehouse. You mention CLC Aberdeen. Are there other CLC Shops in Scotland? Inverness in Scotland; the rest are in England. Tommy Hunt, the previous manager in Inverness not only ran the shop there, but did extensive mobile work among the towns and rural arrears of North East Scotland. My first experience with CLC was with Tommy doing his mobile Christmas run visiting towns up as far as the Black Isle, along the Murray coast and inland. Starting out in the early hours of the morning, travelling a hundred miles or more, we unloaded a score of metal ‘coffins’ loaded with books, setting them out in church halls and returning late at night. Exhausting but worthwhile. Some of the people in the places we visited would not have seen any Christian books since Tommy’s last Christmas visit.

Interview

What does CLC stand for? Christian Literature Crusade, which used to be above our centres. Although it informed Christian readers what we were about, latterly people generally might have had problems with the words ‘literature’ and ‘crusade’. CLC was originally part of WEC Worldwide which came out of the ministry of CT Stud in the 1930s. A couple running a small Christian bookshop in Essex, joined WEC and were told,

rather than sell the shop, to open more ‘like spiritual Woolworths on the high street’.

Do people still read today? With the advent of the visual age, maybe not as much as they use to. Nevertheless, when a single mum on state benefit writes a book and becomes a multimillionaire as a result there must a lot who do. A programme on the TV was recommending people get back to reading. Do people still read books today? Just up the road from our shop is Jimmy Chung’s where people queue for some time for the Chinese food they have an appetite for. Their willingness to put themselves out to satisfy a physical hunger reminds me of a quote of Mrs Gaskell the English 23

News & Competitions novelist, that I read on a margarine tub: “I look at (books) as a child looks at cakes – with glittering eyes and a watering mouth, imagining the pleasure that awaits him.” Books should create and feed our spiritual appetite. We read, not just for acquiring knowledge, but, as the scripture says, that we might know Him. Just as eating once a week will not going to keep us going so an hour or two on Sunday is surely insufficient for our spiritual health. Acts says the church met daily. Christian books are there 24/7.

Interview

How many titles do you stock? We stock about 2 ,000 and that’s less than 5% of what’s available! This means that there’s a fair chance of not having what a customer wants who then goes on the net to buy. But remember every book or CD bought on line, means your local Christian bookshop is that less viable. With so many titles a problem is trying to sort the wheat from the chaff. With so many, how do you decide which ones to stock? Initially by what the publisher tells us. A rep who does his job properly will not try to sell me something that doesn’t agree with CLC’s statement of faith or that won’t sell in this area. It’s not black and white though. There are grey areas. In matters of theology for instance we try not to stock books that are derogatory, of another’s position but to have a representation of different theological views. I often say to folk all our books are judged by the one book, the Bible. If you find something in a book not

warranted by Scripture we will take it out of stock. Have you read them all? By no means although some folk think we ought to have! Have you had any odd requests? A lady once wanted a suitable CD for her parrot who she said fully appreciated Christian music! When you say CLC works in 54 countries do you send folk there.? In times past, yes, but today we find, or are approached by nationals who want to get involved in the distribution of Christian literature. CLC UK has been involved in their training and support. As a mission are there any prayer points that you can give us. Like most missions we always need folk who are called by the Lord to come and work with us. Looking at our notes for our recent prayer day there are a hundred and one things we could pray for throughout the CLC world; personnel – their safety, particularly in volatile parts of the world, the importing of literature where there is a mountain of red tape and local bureaucracy. For many years we prayed about opening up in Moscow. We have now been there 2 years. There are other places seemingly impossible that the Lord enabling, we would like to be. Above all we would like folk to pray that we are a mission that is a blessing to God and to the folk of Dundee of course.

This year D4C have made presentations to the Full Gospel Church, Central Baptist Church and PACT, (a churches together group across Paisley). D4C travelled south to PACT to share what we have achieved in the City of Dundee and to encourage them. We would be delighted to come to your church too to share our vision! Please contact D4C to arrange a suitable time.

Lifeswap captures a main theme of John’s Gospel: transformation - water into wine, the dead to life, blind to sighted. Krish draws us into the stories and demonstrates how similar we are to those in the first century who came to meet Jesus. To be in with a chance of receiving a copy of LIFESWAP just answer the following question: In which venue will The Reel Fling Ceilidh 2008 be held? a. b. c.

Who am i?... ...is is the question that lies in the heart of every child and young person. They ask it in a thousand ways to everyone around them; “Do you still love me mummy?”, “Am I pretty?”, “Maybe if I’m naughty, then someone will notice me..”

What difference would it make if they knew that God loves them; delights in them; and promises them a hope and a future? Beauty for Ashes Born Identity? is a conference for Christians who long to help children and young people reject the negative messages they’ve believed about themselves, and grow in confidence in God’s love for them. In the morning we’ll look at how child identity/self worth is formed, and how it can be damaged. In the afternoon a choice of seminars will give us practical tips on topics such as building Biblical self esteem with children/young people; mentoring those at risk of exclusion;

Alongside inspirational seminar leaders, we’re delighted to be joined by John Hayward (Glasgow) and Kathryn Copsy (Dundee), who are passionate practitioners working with some of the most disadvantaged youngsters in London. We hope and pray that Beauty for Ashes will be an encouraging day as share ideas and seek God together in order to see our children set free from shame and able to rejoice in their inheritance. Central Baptist Church banner makes National Press. Ok…. if I was to pick a newspaper I would ‘make it into’, the SCOTTISH SUN wouldn’t be top of my list, but I was delighted to hear about how they printed a ‘comical’ story on our new banner. It came about when our banner first went up in June ’08 and was getting quite a lot of attention from people passing by. One of the Sun readers decided to take a photograph and send it in; and the paper couldn’t resist a few cheesy puns to accompany a small article and photo. Since then, we have continued to received lots of positive feedback about the banner from passers-by, local residents and offices workers across the street The history of the banner goes back a few years, as it was always 28

I was delighted to see an article from David Robertson (Free Church, Perth Rd.) in the Courier a few months back, letting members of public know loud and clear that even though we hear stories every week about the decline of the Church, MANY of Dundee’s Churches are actually expanding, running out of space, and embarking on Building Projects to improve, extend and enlarge their premises! So God certainly is at work, and it’s exciting!

3. “A new modern, flexible building for a growing Church and the wider Community.” This caption was taken straight from the churches ‘vision statement’ on what the building should be even before we had hired an architect, and captures exactly what the project is all about. Yes we are in desperate need for space to house all our youth and children’s work (and many other of the churches ministries), but this building is also about Community use. A church that remains

inward looking and not outward thinking needs to look up the MANY Bible verses teaching about Evangelism, helping the community and reaching out to others – and then to act on them. I hope and pray we can live up to that.

our former minister Jim Clark’s desire to make full use of our ‘blank canvas’ in front of the site when the scaffolding was up: to advertise our Building Project when the old Auction house was demolished. As part of Central Baptist Church’s Building Action Group (BAG for short), we wanted the design to be clear, punchy, and make both our church and the general public fully aware of the exciting building that we are hoping to open in 2009. The Banner design was then split into 3 parts: 1. WARNING - GOD AT WORK! (including a picture of the ‘men at work sign’ with a little halo about the man!). This is the bit that seems to grab most peoples attention - a comical reference to God actually

Jesus’ words are a challenge! “For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect”. Where does your knowledge about Islam come from? Christian Endeavour seeks to lead children and young people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as revealed in the Word of God, bringing them into the life of the local church, and training them to develop and use their gifts and talents in the Church and community.

Currently NCF’s activities include a number of prayer groups in different parts of Scotland, a quarterly magazine and prayer diary, an annual conference, an open meeting in the Autumn and from time to time other activities as seem appropriate. The annual conference is normally held over a weekend and is residential, although day visitors are welcome too! NCF co-operates with other Christian groups working with health professionals, and also responds to any government proposals likely to affect the nursing profession. Contact is also maintained with nurses serving overseas. Our Autumn meeting takes place on Saturday 15 November, with the AGM in the morning and Rev Andrew Graham, Spiritual Care Provider at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, speaking on ‘Conflict’ in the afternoon. 35

I urge you to support and participate in this incredible ministry!” Tony Anthony, International Evangelist and Best Selling Author “Everyone at MAF will support D4C both spiritually and practically as

we in partnership with them enable the gospel to be preached both in word and deed in and around Dundee.
