Christian Skaters UK

The organization not only encompasses Skateboarders but also BMX, and Roller Bladers, and believes the best way to reach this tight knit community is through its own riders. The network has seen over 60 leaders get involved at any one stage, and we are excited for plans in 2011 with the website being overhauled, a ‘Christian Skaters UK’ face book page being set up.

God has been able to use the exciting sport of skating, to reach people that other traditional church activities would never reach

We are also seeing a number of new and exciting network developments as the individuals involved in Christian Skaters help out at each other’s events around the country, and are able to share the gospel in a relevant way to Skaters. Each year the Christian Skaters UK team meet up for an annual conference, and the initial three of these were all held at the ideal facility of the Factory Skatepark in Dundee. Despite the long distances required for most people and the pretty cold conditions ( as the gatherings were always held in the winter ) the enthusiasm to travel did not diminish. The attendees were able to ‘sleep’ on the ramps, meet for the formal sessions in the café and office facilities, and best of all for the skaters, was to be given access to the quality Skatepark. Feedback from all these events was really positive.

Affiliates include the Dundee Factory Skate Park, Projekts Skate Park in Manchester, the Skate Park at Clitheroe, Unit Skate park in Launceston, and Christian Surfers UK, and Sutton ramp events. Spokesman for Christian Skaters UK Phil Williams comments ‘That they have been amazed at how God has been able to use the exciting sport of skating, to reach people that other traditional church activities would never reach. These activities have ranged from skate events in amazing churches such as Malmesbury Abbey, and outside Exeter Cathedral, to events set up at Skate Parks around the country. 2011 for us is an exciting year and we continue to pray for leaders to come through and individuals to join the network to enable us to launch our first ever Summer Skate Camp. Please pray for us as an organization as we continue to develop and seek to share the gospel with Skaters, BMX, and Rollerblade communities” .

Passion for Jesus, passion for prayer, passion for the poor Tearfund Scotland will be lighting beacons of prayer across the nation in 2011 through a series of exciting events. On the evening of Tuesday March 1 we will be in Central Baptist Church in Dundee, worshipping God and calling out to him for transformation and breakthrough in the world’s poorest communities.

We are inviting the people of Dundee to join us as we seek to lift up the name of Jesus and light up the world with our prayers. We want to illuminate the darkest places where poverty punishes the poorest – across the world and in our own cities. The event is part of a Tearfund global prayer gathering - One Voice 2011. Our guest speaker is Stephen Venable from the International House of Prayer, (IHOP), Kansas City. Stephen is a leader at IHOP and a highly-regarded teacher at their bible college. He will be igniting us with greater passion for Jesus, for prayer and for the poor – the theme of our event. For those unfamiliar with IHOP, they are an evangelical missions organisation that is committed to praying for the release of the fullness of God’s power and purpose in all spheres of society. Having prayed without ceasing for over 11 years, they combine 24/7 prayers for justice with 24/7 works of justice.

Also joining us at the event will be a team from the Glasgow House of Prayer (GHOP). GHOP will be leading us in contemporary worship interwoven with intercessory prayer along with some local leaders from Dundee. Join us at Central Baptist Church, 9a Ward Road, Dundee DD1 1LP at 7.30pm on Tuesday 1st March as we unite in prayer and worship across Scotland. There will also be an informal teaching session in the afternoon for church, prayer and worship leaders to hear more teaching from Stephen on the global prayer and worship movement. Please contact Tearfund Scotland if you are interested in coming to this, or check out our website or Facebook page. (www. tearfund.org/scotland) We also have a free resource pack to help your church pray with One Voice about issues of poverty and injustice. The resource includes an animated film, seven-day prayer guide and map. You could use this as part of your Sunday service, prayer meeting or small group. There are also prayer pod ideas which are ideal for use in prayer rooms. For more information about the One Voice event or to order the resource pack, please contact us in the Scotland office on 0141 332 3621 or email Scotland@tearfund.org.

Mission International Mission teams are central to the work of Mission International

Feature

Dundee based Mission International has three central core elements, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, to be Christ’s disciples as well as disciple others and to support the poor through sustainable partnerships via teams deployment and project development. This young Scottish charity has staff with 20 years of experience in mission work and is prepared to reach out to those in areas of the world where there is no major support or outreach at present. Currently the charity is serving in East and West Africa and in Haiti after the earthquake and other tragedies which have rocked the whole nation. Mission teams are central to the work of Mission international. Team members from every walk of life are encouraged to share their skills and talents to glorify God and to realize the core values of the ministry. During 2011 teams are planned to Burundi, Ghana and Kenya/Tanzania 12

in Africa as well as to Haiti. Teams, after a period of training, will be deployed in support of local mission/project partners and will assist them in achieving their work and reaching their goals in the local community. The teams, which are deployed for a 2-3 week period during July and August, will visit communities in urban and very rural communities. The Ghana team for example will travel 600 miles into the interior to reach people groups who as yet have not heard the name of Jesus. The Kenya/Tanzania team will serve amongst the Maasai and Mang’ati peoples and will require a keen but hardy

sort to cope with the basic conditions and the hard work of preaching and practical duties required. The Burundi team is a Mission Medics (www.missionmedics.org ) team and will preach the Good News as well as treat people with their medical and dental skills. You don’t have to have any medical/dental skills to be part of the team but just be willing to serve and to muck in. Haiti’s mission team will serve amongst the urban poor in one of Haiti’s major cities, in particular with orphaned and destitute children and families.

to “...go into all the world and preach the Gospel...” get in touch with Mission International to discuss the options further and it may be that your life is radically changed as a result of serving God in the developing world.

Applicants may have skills and talents that they would like to share, medical/ dental, music, preaching, teaching etc, however you may feel that you don’t have very much to give at all; you too would be a valuable member of a team if you are keen and ready to serve. Please prayerfully consider God’s call

Mission International also provides ways that you can be involved in God’s service even if you are unable to go on a team. Mighty Meals, Global Sponsor and Bibles & Literature, etc allow donors to support poor communities in the developing world. To see more visit www.mission-international.org

Signpost International presents an evening with

Early this New Year the well-known speaker, pastor, author and sociologist Dr Tony Campolo will once again be speaking in Dundee. hunger every day. It says that old people shall live out their lives in perfect health. I want to see elderly people cared for, as they should be. It goes on to say that everyone should have decent housing to live in. It says that everybody has a job, to work in the vineyard out there, and earn a living. I want to see people get a job.” Tony also finds respect for the Earth in the Bible. “The last verse of this chapter of Isaiah says, ‘Neither shall they hurt the earth anymore.’ Environmentalism is in there,” he says.

Dundee’s Caird Hall Wednesday 26th January 2011 Doors open 7:00pm for a 7:30 start Free Entry Tony is a well known speaker, author, sociologist, pastor, social activist, and a passionate follower of Jesus! "Tony Campolo is my favourite evangelist, he blends revival with social justice. In that way, he's like one of the nineteenth century evangelists who fought for the abolition of slavery and women's suffrage and social reform. His altar calls urge all of us to overcome poverty, end war, and stand up for human rights for everybody."

(Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners) Entry is free, with a collection being made for the work of Signpost International, a Dundee based Christian Development Agency working with poor communities worldwide.

A passionate follower of Jesus, Tony is a believer in faith-based activism for social justice. “When I call people to commit their lives to Christ,” he says, “it is primarily in order that God might use them in this life to do the work that needs to be done. I try to get people to give themselves over to Jesus so that Jesus can take them and put them into law, business, the arts, and to government, to be agents of change.” For Tony, the Kingdom of God is a place of justice. When asked to ‘spell that out,’ he refers to the Scriptures. “I go to the Bible and the sixty-fifth chapter of Isaiah, starting with verse seventeen, in which the Kingdom of God is shown to have certain characteristics,” he says. “First of all, children do not die in infancy. I want to go to work around the world to do something about the infant mortality rate, the fact that 30,000 kids die of

For the past few years Tony Campolo has been the Patron of Dundee-based Christian development agency Signpost International. “We have the same vision,” says Tony, “and I want to make my contribution to Signpost’s terrific ministry.” It is at Signpost’s invitation that Tony will be speaking in Belfast and at Dundee’s Caird Hall in January.

“It is always exciting to hear Tony speak,” says Signpost’s director Kerry Dixon. “The challenge is to see what tangible difference our faith makes to the lives of others. Whether we are taking literally the teachings and practice of Jesus!” Tony Campolo will be speaking at Dundee’s Caird Hall on Wednesday January 26th at 7.30pm. We have made a big effort to ensure that the church is inclusive and genuinely welcoming

Broughty Ferry Baptist Church has been greatly encouraged by significant growth in both numerical and spiritual terms since the 1990s. We are very thankful to God for the transformation of the life of our church over these years and look forward to even greater things happening in the years to come. We have made a big effort to ensure that the church is inclusive and genuinely welcoming to new friends joining us for Sunday worship or other activities during the week. This has been a key factor in many new people joining us over the years. The growth has come about in a number of ways. First of all, closer links with the local community has been foundational. Over the years we have arranged a variety of social events which have been well attended by a wide range of people from the area. We have a very

successful parent and toddlers group on a Monday morning in the church hall, together with ‘Boogie Babies’, a happy singing and activity session for young children and their parents or carers on a Wednesday morning, and a Craft Club with an experienced teacher for slightly older preschool children on a Friday afternoon. Our Girl’s Brigade Company on Tuesday evenings in Barnhill Primary School has also seen steady growth to the present record numbers. We also have a variety of meetings and activities for older people and most importantly several prayer meetings on Mondays and Tuesdays for women and on Saturday mornings for men at a prayer breakfast –we like our food in the Baptist Church! We also have a high proportion of the

congregation who are associated with one of the various house-groups who meet at different times during the week. The growth of families in the church has led to a record high of 45 children in the Sunday School. We also have Breakthru, our innovative work amongst young people of high school age. Another key factor in the growth has been the great blessing of Christianity Explored courses. There have been many people of all ages who have come to faith in Christ through attending this course, which we run twice a year –the next one being in January. It is a wonderfully clear presentation of the Christian faith and we rejoice in the way God has used it to bring people to Himself. Other courses that we run each year include, Discipleship Explored; a Marriage course; and one on parenting skills. The church has mission as a high priority both at home and overseas. We have

been very supportive of the Seven Arches Trust work in the local schools; the new Street Pastors initiative in the Ferry and appreciate the growing strength of ties between Dundee congregations in membership with DECA. Overseas we are involved in church-planting in Serbia; supporting disadvantaged or disabled young people in Romania; and working on various projects with the Baptist Missionary Society, Tearfund, MAF, and a number of other mission agencies.

We do face a number of challenges. Not least of which are our premises which are too small and in need of upgrading to best serve the needs of the church and community for the 21st century. God’s Hope for the City Prayer Across Dundee 22

Women Walking with God So, Christmas has come and gone and is probably by now but a memory sustained by a few blurred photos and perhaps a few extra inches?! That is until the credit card bills start piling up on the doormat; a stark reminder of the cost of living in a society driven by consumerism and Boxing Day sofa sales. But we’re not trapped helplessly in discarded wrapping paper and string are we? No, our hopes haven’t been dashed by the failure of that new widescreen-plasmaTV-with-built-in-blu-ray-DVD-andtoaster to sate our hunger, for our hope lies beyond these things. Doesn’t it? As we begin to look forward to the New Year we are reminded of the promise that the birth of our saviour brings to us, to the world. A hope that outlasts any three-year warranty or money-back guarantee. This Hope is of course fully realised and celebrated not at Christmas alongside Santa and his reindeer, but rather a few months down the line at our most important of seasons; Easter. Last year in 2010 we at Prayer Across Dundee (PAD) and Signpost International joined hands with Dundee for Christ and Christians across the city (and beyond!) to humble ourselves in prayer before our mighty Creator as we maintained 160 hours of continual prayer. Regular readers of Broadcast will be aware of the huge successes of both this week long 24/7 event and of Resurrection Day 2010.

Last year was great, but basically we want more. We all worship a God who thinks BIG (just look at the world around us!) and we want to offer Him praise that is a reflection of His awesomeness and His desire to see transformation come to this world, to this land, to this city. The 24/7 event was a real step of faith for us, and God came through above and beyond our wildest expectations. This year we want to build on this, we want to continue to ride this wave, and we would love to see others join us. Our vision this year is for a week of events focusing on bringing together followers of Christ from across the city to seek His face, worship together, and stand together; confident in the Hope that we share. We feel that there is real momentum and strong desire for another focused 24/7 prayer event through Holy Week, but we would like to see other events running concurrently in churches around Dundee. This is not about building up any one church or organisation, rather coming alongside each other and raising up THE CHURCH. We would love to see representation by as many churches as possible in the planning of this prayer event and really value any and all comments and suggestions. Please visit us at www.prayeracrossdundee.co.uk or call us on 01382 660072 for more information. Many thanks, and God bless. Timon Scheven

Jean “When I was inside the rubble, the concrete on top of me was so heavy I thought I was going to die.” Jean Guierrier was one of the thousands of children left homeless by Haiti’s earthquake. His arm was crushed under the debris of his collapsed home, but with the support of Compassion he was given the vital medical care he needed. The trauma therapy that Compassion provided also helped him to regain his self confidence and build friendships. When the earthquake struck, Compassion were there searching for thousands of sponsored children and their families. Haiti – One Year On A year on from the Haitian earthquake, Sean Sheridan returns to Haiti to find out what progress is being made. I throw open the curtains of my spartan Port-au-Prince hotel room to be confronted by a jammed-packed tent city. In plain view, an elderly woman stoops over a bucket of murky water, washes the night’s grime from her body as she stands in the mud. “It doesn’t sound like much has changed down there,” friends had told me. My last visit here was a few weeks after the January 12, 2010 earthquake, and judging by the million people still living on the streets and the sheer volume of rubble that still clutters the city, they may be right. “Nine months after the earthquake, we are still in a desperate situation,” Compassion Haiti Country Director, Gilbaud Saint-Cyr, tells. “The Haitian people are very brave and strong, and they want to do their best to have a better life,” he says. “But in general, it is really a nightmare.” Yet there are signs of progress. In three days visiting Compassion projects, every sponsored child and parent I spoke with tells me they have survived because of the one-on-one care they received from Compassion: the food kits, the shelter, the access to medical

care, the counselling, the schooling, the clean water. Stepping into each Compassion project is like stepping into an oasis. None of this is by accident: an ongoing strategic plan to help children and families (and in turn, Haiti) is being directed by former Compassionsponsored child Elissant Jean Jacques. “The most important strategy, in my mind, is to help parents generate income,” he tells me as we sit on a mound of rubble in Leogane (the epicentre of the earthquake) outside the Leogane Child Development Centre, where funds from Compassion have been used to set up a temporary school. “We are also helping church partners rebuild,” he says, nodding at the well equipped interim classrooms. As I witness him and other Compassion staff in action, it is clear that the strategic plan is working, that little by little hope is taking root. Looking at the woman washing herself in the tent camp, that’s still hard to imagine. But looking inside Compassion projects, that’s an entirely different story. Sean Sheridan

Compassion supports more than 64,000 children in Haiti and more than a million in 26 countries across the world. It costs less than 70p a day to sponsor a child with Compassion. Visit www.compassionuk.org or call 01932 836490 to sponsor a child today.

International Christain College

hits the road On Friday February 11th Richard Tiplady, Principal of International Christian College in Glasgow is hosting an open evening at Central Baptist Church to meet Dundee’s Christians, local church leaders and former students of ICC.

ICC, formed out of the merger of Glasgow Bible College (previously BTI) and Northumbria Bible College is now 12 years old. In 2010 we appointed Richard as our second Principal, succeeding Tony Sargent who retired in 2009. Richard is a graduate of GBC and has worked with Global Connections and Tearfund, and most recently was the UK Director of European Christian Mission. His passion is for Christians and churches to catch the vision of being mission-focussed and mission-shaped, and for ICC to be a centre which not only trains individuals for a variety of ministries but which is a resource for congregations across the nation to help support them in responding to the missional challenges which the church in Scotland faces. Richard says “The biggest challenge we have to face in the West in our mission is to accept that Christendom is over. We are no longer in a privileged position of power in society and we do ourselves no service – we do the gospel no service – 28

to clamour to bring it back. I think that means we need to think again about how we live as Christians, the purpose of Church, discipleship, and the function of church leadership. We need to be training Christian leaders who are able to navigate this new environment, able to lead God’s people to be comfortable with it and faithful to God in a new landscape. We have a fantastic opportunity, an enormous privilege and a huge responsibility to do that as a college”. Refreshments will be served from 7.00pm and the evening’s programme will commence at 7.30. Richard will speak and share something of his vision for how Christians in Scotland and throughout the UK can face up to some of today’s challenges, and how ICC can work with churches to help encourage and equip them to do this. There will also be contributions from staff and students. We warmly invite as many readers of Broadcast as can make it to come and join us this evening. 29

It is a demonstration of unity and also a chance to celebrate what unites us. It is a chance to get together for a time of worship and a picnic. The first year we ran the event we had 15,000 people and in the second year we got over 20,000 people. In 2011 we are looking at about the same numbers if not more.

Tim Jupp Tim Jupp has been known for many years as the man behind the keys in the Band Delirious? Having travelled the world and played to thousands of people (including a gig a Wembley Stadium) Tim now organises a new venture “ The Big Church Day Out” Tim – You are more known for playing Keys with Delirious. Now the band are no more do you ever get to play keyboards? The only place I get to play these days is in church. Sometimes that’s Martin leading and sometimes with others. I don’t miss the travelling too much because we were all over the place. I miss walking on the stage and helping lead people into the presence of God. With the band I was often caught up in the organisational stuff so being involved in Big Church Day out is a bit of a continuation of that.

So what exactly is the Big Church Day Out? The Big Church Day started 2 years ago in Sussex. Years ago Delirious used to do events in our community to bring people together. I remember being in a small church as a young lad myself, and being taken to a big event like spring harvest and being amazed there were so many Christians. I love the idea of having an big event where people can come from smaller churches and join together. It is a demonstration of unity and also a chance to celebrate what unites us.

What we are doing with the Big Church Day out is gathering the church and its key aim is not evangelistic, having said that it has been great to see people bring their non-Christian friends.

Matt |Redman, Dave Crowder Band, Newsboys, Chris Tomlin and Israel Houghton amongst others. We also have the UCB stage with some of the top UK artists around.

Since the festival Frenzy finished in 2010 there has been a move by people on facebook to bring The Big Church Day Out to Scotland. Is this a possibility?

Church is all shapes and sizes and ages too so we have the “Tea Tent” which is for people in their 50’s/60’s + where we have more relaxed artists and serve tea and scones. We served 2,500 cream teas in the first year!

We have not ruled this out and have been exploring the option. It will not happen overnight but we are looking into it and seeing if this can be a possibility, It certainly will not happen in 2011 so people should come to Sussex. People can join the facebook and let us know their thoughts, thanks.

Sussex is a long way from Scotland. How can you encourage people to venture south? What we are offering is a chance for people to come from Scotland and have free camping which others would have to pay for. People can fly to Gatwick and get a train to the venue in 40 minutes. You can write into the broadcast magazine and get a free voucher for the camping. What are some of the key changes in the Christian music scene over the past 10 years? Worship has become a bigger thing, with things such as Soul Survivor and Delirious being a part of that too. There have not been as many obvious

Interface Arts Graduates there is often a sacred/ secular divide when it comes to how art should be made by Christians. One of the staple topics for discussion was how best to glorify God through art with integrity to artistic disciplines and with respect to peers.

Cully graduated as an artist from Duncan of Jordanstone Collage of Art and Design. He has worked formerly as Stable manager and Riding Instructor at Teen Ranch Scotland. He is co- founder of INTERFACE ARTS GRADUATES. -- . .- … ..- .-. . / ..-. --- ..- / -- . .- … ..- .-. . When Jesus told a parable he was encouraging his audience to think beyond what they were experiencing on a surface level and when he stated “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Mark 4:24) he was expressing to his audience that the deeper they investigated the more they would be blessed with understanding. I find this a good principle to apply when speaking to people about the nature of understanding art, especially contemporary art, which is less obviously representational and therefore harder to access. It is true that art, like anything

36

that is alien to those who don’t ‘speak the language’ will remain an enigma unless barriers are surmounted to enable learning. I see ‘communicating in and through the arts’ as part of my job with INTERFACE ARTS GRADUATES.

As I worked with students and over the years saw them graduate, it became apparent to me that those pursuing life as an artist and a Christian after art school felt very isolated and many lacked support and understanding. When my contract ended with UCCF I began, with my London based colleague Ally Gordon, to set up the new initiative INTERFACE ARTS GRADUATES with the aim to offer support to recent art graduates. The aim isn’t dissimilar to the work I did with the students but a key focus is to reassure art graduates that their artistic gifting and calling from God remain. We want them to know that their skills allow

We don’t take on the role of Church in the lives of art graduates but we see a need to develop a better relationship and understanding between the local church and the arts so that the church can embrace, value and pray for those in their family who need support in a Godless art world.

Feature

The sentiment raised in this work made by concept artist Joseph Kosouth emphasizes the need for Christian artists to engage and dialogue in the art world

At Glasgow School of Art last year the Freshers were told by the head of school at their induction that they were now part of an atheist community. This made my role to encourage the Christian Union groups to share their faith in Jesus in this environment all the more poignant.

them credible access to the art world. We want to encourage them to commit to the art world, to see it as their mission field and to bring God’s light to it by the way they live, speak and practice their art. INTERFACE ARTS GRADUATES is developing a network for Christian artists across the UK offering a support community and opportunities to collaborate and develop personally through critique. We host monthly gatherings in London and Scotland as well as two National conferences each a year. At these events we hope to unite Christian artists, equipping and training them biblically to begin to fashion the arts with Godly values while maintaining artistic credibility.

INTERFACE ARTS GRADUATES is associated with UCCF: The Christian Unions, Arts Centre Group (London), the L’Abri Fellowship and SOLAS in Dundee. If you would like to know more about us or would be interested in how to offer support please contact me Cully McCulloch on: cullyandtrish@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.interfaceartsgraduates.org

For the last 5 years I have worked as an Arts Staff Worker for UCCF (Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship). My job was to support Christians at all the Art Schools in Scotland and to help them see that God as creator valued and gifted them with artistic ability which he would want them to use to glorify him. DEAD

‘An exciting story where love triumphs over evil and hope over despair. A book, the author hopes, will communicate to the reader the effects of poverty, the importance of education and the need to take every opportunity to make the world a better place. To do nothing is not an option. The 150 million street children of the world need today’s generation to do something to help them.’ PF Cairns It has been my great pleasure to review the debut novel by P F Cairns. The book is an exciting insight into jungle life and the lives of street children in South America. An adventure story, set in Peru, it is hoped that it will inspire everyone to do something to help street children. It has been my joy to see the first book come to print, not least of all because this noble book is set to send all its profits from the sale of the book to help street children globally but also because the author is my mother.

DON’T HURT US

P F Cairns writes to inspire the reader in many forms. Two British children, living in Peru are survivors of a plane crash. Their challenge is to get home and their journey is the basis for the book. PF Cairns boldly tells the story whilst conveying the message of hope; the hope that we have if we trust in Jesus Christ as our personal saviour. To those who believe, the message of God’s love is demonstrated throughout the book, to those who don’t the novel conveys that God is real and that communicating with Him is a good thing.

s n r i a C . F P. A rare glimpse into life in the jungle and the pressures on Amazonian communities.

as although this is a work of fiction the trauma of children living on the street across the world is very real. P F Cairns was involved heavily with The Vine Trust (www.vinetrust.org ) making many trips to the Amazon. It was there, along with her husband, that she gained a wealth of firsthand knowledge of jungle life and that she first became aware of the poverty and helplessness of abandoned children. It was these experiences that enabled her to write honestly and accurately about life in jungle and throughout the book.

The novelist uses various characters to inform the children through the book that trusting in God is their way to succeed in their quest to get home.

‘The Dead Don’t Hurt Us’ is a rare glimpse into life in the jungle and the pressures on Amazonian communities. As the story continues, the horrific life of street children in Peru is depicted. The story itself leaves a bitter taste with the reader

The story is aimed at early teenage years however I believe that there is something in the book for anybody over ten years old. Everyone loves an adventure, least of all because our own lives are a story interwoven with challenges and relationships, but mostly because we just love to hear stories. This is how Jesus taught.

Scotland has had a long tradition of influence from Christian values for instance Glasgow’s motto has been, ‘Lord let Glasgow flourish through the preaching of thy word and praising thy name.’ Sadly, it appears that Scotland is ashamed of its Christian roots. Glasgow’s motto is often shortened to ‘let Glasgow flourish’ showing that many Scots want blessing; apart from acknowledging where the blessings truly come from or any relationship with God. Why is this so? There are many reasons. Solas’ mission is to uncover the truth about Christ and reveal it to people in a caring and thought provoking way, making Christianity once more accessible to the public.

42

In case you missed the Out of the Silent Church Conference, it was a day conference designed for Christians to learn more about effective evangelism. World renowned speakers Ravi Zacharias, John Lennox, Stuart McAllister and our own David Robertson gave keys to help unlock the barriers between people and Christ. Solas (Centre for Public Christianity) has the talks (audio and DVD’s) available via our website: www.solas-cpc.org, for a small fee. We aim to have another large conference this coming October! Solas seeks to engage areas of the public through Society, Science, Cafe, Music, the Arts, Medicine, History, Media, Philosophy and Church. We can’t afford to be passive

and submissive any longer as militant secularists would happily shape these areas and further lead people away from God. Solas seeks to develop the tools for use in the 21st Century. We don’t have all the answers by a long chalk but with suggestions, guidance and prayer from you and people like you we hope to find them and make them widely available. If you’d like to join Solas as a member please contact the head office on (01382) 525 021 or email: office@ solas-cpc.org. There are many resources available via our website, but membership gives you full unrestricted access to all our materials, plus you’ll receive a 10% discount card for CLC Bookshop Dundee and you will be able to have a say in what Solas does and is about.

The weekend of November 20, 2010 was the official launch of the centre in Dundee and certainly a jump start to Solas’ mission.

Stay up to date with our training events and conferences via our website. If you want us to present to your church what Solas is all about please let us know. It could change your world This year, 2011, provides a terrific opportunity for churches to encourage their communities to meet with the living God through His Word. Why? Because it is the 400th anniversary of the publishing of the Authorised King James Version of the Bible. Biblefresh (www.Biblefresh.com) provides loads of ideas to help your church celebrate. Will your church sign up to 4 pledges - read, train, translate and experience?

Read Scripture Union is promoting E100 (www.e100challenge.org.uk) to help congregations read some selected Essential 100 passages from the Old and New Testaments. Bible reading can be difficult. Why not set up a group where you can talk to each other and share the difficulties of each selected reading on a regular basis?

Train Biblefresh Teams are here to introduce your churches or house groups to different ways of studying God’s Word. One way might be meditative and contemplative, another way more of a conversational approach? Or perhaps you would be more comfortable with a traditional method with a difference. You print the Bible passage onto an A4 sheet with double spacing, and then write notes and comments as you study and learn together - great fun! If you’d like to know more about Biblefresh Teams please email biblefresh@ scottishbiblesociety.org to book a team for your church. But don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate four hundred years of the Bible being available in a language we understand.

Translate There are many examples of people’s lives being transformed by their exposure to the Scriptures in their own languages for the first time ever. In Burkina Faso, West Africa, a church leader recalled an exciting incident: “The class used Bible stories for literacy instruction in the 46

local language - Sìcìté. As a result of this powerful teaching, almost the whole class became Christians. Today there is a Christian village in this Sìcìté area, thanks to literacy instruction.” We want to help more people have the Bible in their own language and will be raising funds for translation work in Burkina Faso. It is estimated that it costs about £6 to translate a verse of the Bible - how many verses could you or your church group help to translate? Want to give? Here’s the link www.biblefresh.com/resources/ translation/donate/

Experience The Nativity acted out by young children is always fun and memorable. We remember it so much better because we learn the story in a different way. Drama has that effect. If the book of Esther was to be made into a film who would you get to play Esther? What sort of person was she anyway - good, bad or both? How about setting a challenge for the church members to take a photograph to illustrate the verse “What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and then lose his soul?” Just some ideas of how to use different ways to experience God speaking to you through His Word in different ways Lets make sure we take the opportunity to celebrate God’s Word being available to us so that we hear God speaking clearly and loudly to each member of our community.

47

Can you answer clearly questions about the authenticity of the Bible? Are you fully convinced of this yourself? Can the Bible stand up against science, archaeology and modern scholarly attacks?

It’s hard to overstate the importance of the Bible central to Christians and Christianity. It is our source of knowledge about God, ourselves and our faith. By it God speaks to us; He teaches, rebukes, corrects and trains us through it. Little wonder then that those who oppose Christianity direct their attacks on the Bible; on its reliability and trustworthiness. Scan the bestselling book lists to see just how many imply the Bible is politically manufactured, casting doubt on its authenticity or even calling it dangerous for humanity. Fighting back is Charlotte Baptist Chapel in Edinburgh who are hosting a one day conference taking aim at these attacks. Associate pastor Liam Garvie (well known in Dundee for his time at Central Baptist) says this is a unique chance to hear some of the best evidence for believing the Bible. “In conjunction with Bible and Church ministry we’ve invited 3 leading scholars from Tyndale House, University of Cambridge to focus in on Jesus and the Gospels. “These guys are international experts who have devoted themselves studying

48

the reliability of scriptures. Between them, they’ve got more degrees than a thermometer, they really know their stuff.” But this isn’t a conference for fellow scholars, this is for your ordinary person in the pew. Liam continues “It’s not all ‘tweed jackets and elbow patches’, this is a superpractical day for ordinary Christians. Ultimately it’s about helping us all to share the good news of Jesus with our non Christian friends. We want to help people feel more convinced of the Bible’s reliability and give them the confidence to respond to the attacks they see in films and books. “Even Christians can have questions about the Bible and it can be hard to get well researched, expert answers in a format you can really understand and then use in conversation. That’s exactly what this day is about.”

Liam Garvie

The conference runs for one day from 10am-4pm and costs £10 (£5 concessions) including lunch. More information and online booking is available at www.charlottechapel.org/tof

Intelligent, loving, trust worthy, decent, respectable, supportive, hard working, attractive. Would you describe a prostitute like that? Or is a person caught up in the sex trade someone who is worthless and a waste of space? What if it was your daughter being pimped out by an abusive partner and had no way out? Would you still love her? Theresa Cumbers saw the needs of these young girls who were trapped in prostitution and loved them as if they were her own daughters. This book is her story, the girls who made it out, some who didn’t and the story of the Magdalene Group, a charity working with prostitutes in Norwich, who show unconditional love to every girl and family they meet. ‘The Grace Outpouring: Blessing Others through Prayer’ Every now and then along comes a book which surprises you and births a deeper hunger for God in you: this is one of those books. Roy Godwin teams up with Dave Roberts, co-author of ‘Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer is Awakening a Generation’, to tell the amazing story of God’s Presence at work in Ffald-y-Brenin, a retreat centre in Wales, www.ffald-ybrenin.org. Beautifully written, full of faith, love and humility, ‘The Grace Outpouring: Blessing Others through Prayer’ is the story of how Roy and Daphne Godwin who followed God’s guidance to become directors of Ffald-y-Brenin. For Roy it was a time of apparent wilderness where he wasn’t able to share his faith with with people who don’t know Jesus. However, quite unexpectedly, the Holy Spirit began to draw people to the centre. Far from it being dependent upon Roy’s ability to share the Gospel, the transformation of lives was through simply praying blessing over people as they entered the little chapel and leaving them alone with God. The responses were astonishing.

If you have felt that your prayer life is lacking in something, if you want to see how God uses normal people and situations, if you’d like to be part of God’s mission to bless the world, this is the book for you.

The simple idea of praying blessing on all those around; their crops, their livestock and their homes, quite regardless of who they are really impacted my prayer life. The book is very inspiring; it stirred hunger for more of God in my life and more of His kingdom to burst out in the area I live, Dundee and beyond! This short book will stimulate your faith and restore your faith in a God who changes lives, not through our words, but through our desire to be a blessing to all – not cloistered away from the world, but maintaining a regular rhythm of prayer and realignment with God throughout the day. I heartily recommend this book. read about D4C generated media at www.dundeeforchrist.com/projects

We all want to be part of something great, something vibrant, something dynamic. We serve the local church but recognise that for the local church to flourish we need each other. That is what CLAN is seeking to do by bringing Christians together from across Scotland. We want to encourage, strengthen and bless one another, but we also want to go beyond this to see a movement established that is greater than any one local church. Raising Up A Missionary Movement is an event designed to gather up our strengths to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Bob Johnson is someone who will encourage and challenge us to grasp this opportunity. As a gifted evangelist, leader and well known speaker in USA, he has been used in some of the toughest spiritual places throughout the world, bringing people to faith and building up the local church to step out boldly in seeing the Kingdom of God established. Bob is passionate about equipping believers and someone you will enjoy spending some time with – he will make you laugh, he will encourage you and he will help build us together.

A day for church leaders and members of their leadership team to be inspired and equipped as we seek to raise up a missionary movement in and for Scotland. CLAN Ministries Day Saturday 29th January Open to all who wish to attend, as we encourage and equip local churches to see our nation changed. Worship at each event will be lead by Allan McKinlay. When & Where • Holy Trinity Wester Hailes, Edinburgh • 10am - 4pm • £15 per person Booking http://www.clangathering.org.uk About Bob Johnson: Bob is married to Kimberly and has a church in San Francisco called the Gate & a ministry serving the homeless, prostitutes & inner-city kids. Bob is the brother of Bill Johnson, Senior Leader of Bethel Church in Redding, California.
