Teen Ranch we’d better go and do what we can for the kids so they can hear the Christian message”. They prayed a prayer of faith with $2 dollars to their name that they were willing, but God must supply all their needs.

??

25 years of camps in Scotland, 50 in Australia, who can believe it? For Bob and Jenny Ockenden, founding directors of Teen Ranch Scotland, it all started at Teen Ranch Australia. Both worked as volunteers, knew each other for many years, got married at Teen Ranch, and worked there full time. While listening to the radio, a survey said 65% of Americans were church attendees, 12% of Australians and 5% and falling in the UK. Bob said, “If that’s true, 6

After more discouragements, a random verse in Psalm 75:6 “promotion comes neither from the east, the west or the south” - look at a compass - there is only one direction to go – NORTH. What an amazing verse at that moment. Bob went to have a look, was told at first there were no properties, was leaving the real estate office, was called back, “there is a disused mansion house in a little village called Inchture. It’s not been lived in for 15 years – has 26 acres of land, a small cottage and the mansion house, offers of £75,000”. The dwindling £6,000 looked good against that. Bob walked up the drive saying, “is

50 in Australia, who can believe it?

As you read, you must realise there are many months, experiences, ups and downs between each line. They packed up, said goodbye and left with $11,000/£6,000 in their pockets. They stayed with distant family in Essex and began looking at beautiful properties priced £1,000,000 - £1,200,000. Their £6,000 looked so small and was disappearing by just living, travelling, buying a car. There were few encouragements, especially from Christians. Jenny’s parents came for eldest son’s first birthday, wanted to see Scotland, so we came and fell in love with Scotland.

25 years of camps in Scotland,

this it?” But walked away to look elsewhere as the disused mansion looked a huge task for one as “green” as the hills of Scotland. The real estate would not let go as they had a bite on the line, and finally an offer of £57,500 was placed and accepted. How to pay the deposit of £5,750 with the dwindled £6000? 2 cheques arrived from Australia, giving a total of £5755. They paid the £5,750 deposit leaving £5 in hand and second son to be born in a few weeks. “Your word is a binding contract” Bob was told - now for the balance. A loan was arranged, interest free, from a generous family in Scotland. The property purchased, now for the work to be done. In looking

back the task did not seem huge and daily inspiration and strength was given. 18 months passed, the place was ready for very basic operation - 3 horses, old bikes, canvas canoes, 20 hospital beds, 1 shower and 2 toilets. The first camp was 4 boys from Birmingham, the second a mixture of 8 boys and girls and that was it for summer. 25 years ago there were 12 kids. 50 the next summer; then 75, 150, 450. The summer camps were full and many weekends either side. Over 150 volunteers, about 20 fulltime staff, 25 – 30 horses, 68 acres of land, 2 cottages and more than enough work to run camps and maintain and improve all the activities. For many years it was basic, then improving and now expanding. 7

21st Century Disciples drop the spiritual. To do that would take away our purpose. There have been 1,000’s of volunteers over the years, 100’s who have worn the cap of “full time staff” and without a doubt, with total unison they would say “Take away timeout and its time to be out, shake off the dust of Scotland, and move to another field to plough, sow, watch and harvest”. May that day never come. Over these 25 years, every day activities have stopped for “Time Out”. Fun Christian songs are sung (not worship) and a simple, clear Christian message given. The acceptance of this has been wonderful from the kids, and many changes have happened in peoples understanding of the Christian faith - many taking it up personally as a new way of life. They say at Teen Ranch 1,000’s of kids came (now in the 10’s of thousands), 100’s of them respond to the message given and many have gone on in the faith. Notice the decline, 1,000 to 100 to “many”. Only time and eternity will tell what has happened in hearts and minds over the years. Bob was once told at Perthshire rugby club by one of his mates “You’ll never convert me”. Bob’s answer “You’re right, BUT watch out, God might”. Teen Ranch’s job is not to convert kids but to get them to think and listen to what God says. The rest is between them and God. Today, work marches on, with growing pressure to provide for the physical, mental, social side but

8

As the years have passed many new doors have opened, and Teen Ranch Scotland have believed they should lend a hand to kick start works in France, Romania, Poland, Kenya, and maybe Egypt. Someone once said to Bob, “You can’t have everyone” Bob replied “that’s right, they may pass by your place, but if they stop at the door and ask for help, that’s a different story”. Bob recalls reading the first morning in Scotland, Revelation 3:8 “behold I set before you an open door, that no man can shut” This work is bigger than a man, it is God’s work and God will take it on. May they stay close to His will, to not in any way hinder the work, 25 years is but the start.

Prayer for Schools

Around 1100 Scottish schools are currently being covered in prayer by the Schools Prayer Network.

Our vision: Prayer for every

Of course you can pray without registering, but there is great encouragement in joining with others to pray and in seeing a national
 increase in schools prayer.

school in Scotland

School – we have all been there! It may be a teacher you vividly recall, or perhaps it is a smell which evokes the most memories: carbolic soap, school dinners, not to mention stinky toilets! School memories can be happy, with friendships that last a lifetime and good teachers who influence us for life. School memories can also be painful, with memories of bullying, exam pressures, or failure to succeed. For many of you reading this of course school is a present reality and part of your everyday life as a pupil, teacher or other member of the school staff. Where is God when it comes to our schools? As Christian pupils, do we leave him at church on Sunday, scared to mention our faith to our not-yetChristian friends? As Christian staff members, do we view our work as a calling, aware of a responsibility to be salt and light in the staffroom and classroom? As parents, grandparents and church members, do we support our local schools and pray for them?

Almost all of us have some contact with schools: we live somewhere near one; our children and grandchildren attend a local school; we pass one going to work; young people crowd us out on the bus or slow us down when we are driving home. We want to share Jesus’ heart of compassion and to demonstrate that concern by praying and caring for our schools. School is where our children spend the bulk of their lives. In Dundee City alone, there are almost 26,000 young people at school. School, not church, is shaping their attitudes, their relationships with others, even their relationship with God. The media bombards them with “heroes” who are here today, gone tomorrow. Most have not actively rejected God; they haven’t heard of him in the first place. As one boy in a primary school SU group recently exclaimed: “God? Who is God anyway?” Statistics say that 86% of us come to faith under the age of 16 – how vital then that we pray for our young people, where they are, in school.

for the best online directory of churches contacts details www.dundeeforchrist.com/churches

Nowadays very few young people have meaningful contact with a Christian adult, or access to the Bible, apart from at school. At school they most probably receive a copy of the New Testament, courtesy of Gideons International. At school they may have a Christian teacher or headteacher, investigate Christianity as part of the curriculum, have assembly led by a chaplain or youth worker, and have access to a Scripture Union group at lunchtime or after school. In Scripture Union we have seen an encouraging growth in schools’ groups. There are opportunities for many more, with more schools wanting groups than there are volunteers to run them. We need to give thanks for these opportunities and pray while there are still open doors. Our vision is for every school to have people committed to pray for that school, its pupils, teachers and ancillary staff, and for God’s blessing on all of them. We want people to support in prayer those who bear witness in schools, such

as Christian pupils, chaplains,
youth workers and volunteers. We are very grateful to the numerous people In Dundee who have already registered with the Schools Prayer Network. Of the 50 schools in Dundee City, 23 are now registered for prayer. Will you consider joining the Schools Prayer Network? You can find out more about the SPN by visiting our website at www.suscotland.org. uk/prayer. Simply contact us, via the website, email or telephone, and commit yourself to pray for the needs of a school near you. Are you already praying for a school? Find out if others are too, or whether your school is one of the 27 Dundee schools not yet registered with SPN. Together we can see every one of Dundee’s schools become a focus for prayer!

The Schools Prayer Network (SPN) was started in 1997 by Michael Philip, a Glasgow teacher. SU Scotland took over its administration and promotion in 2006 with the unchanged aim of supporting and encouraging people who pray for their local school.

Gaither’s Concert Saturday 24th October 2009 God has blessed this blind man with. Along with Gordon was Signature Sound who produced excellent harmonies.

On the above date my wife and I had the pleasure of representing ‘Dundee for Christ’ at not only a wonderful concert but also at the ‘Meet and Greet’ where we met Bill Gaither, Janet Paschal and Linda Randle Within minutes we realised that Bill, who is still going strong at the young age of 73, was a very unassuming man whose aim is still to share God’s love with people and glorify His name at every opportunity. Gordon Mote was on keyboards and we all again marvelled at the gift of music which 20

The first half allowed each artist to perform their own style of music and then after the interval everyone came together to produce a wonderful finale in the unforgettable Gaither style. The whole concert resounded in praise to God and allowed everyone in attendance to join with those on stage in the joy of glorifying His Name. On a personal note, I think that the Gaither’s are one of the most talented gospel singing groups around and Bill and Gloria have written some wonderful pieces which many of us have grown up singing. In closing I would like to thank ‘Dundee for Christ’ for allowing us to represent them and pray Gods’ blessing upon all the work that they do for Him. Yours In His Service David and Elizabeth Hornal.

Church Reps Dundee For Christ are looking for people to act as church reps. What would this involve I hear you ask? Well! Here are some responsibilities the D4C church rep would be asked to fulfil:

• You would help co-ordinate the distribution of

BROADCAST to all members of your church. Posting 5000 magazines around the city would be too expensive and making sure the magazines are effectively distributed will be crucial.

• Act as a point of reference for D4C to get information included in your church bulletin and magazine.

• Make announcements in church about upcoming Dundee For Christ events. (optional – if you feel confident enough!)

• Coordinate a D4C visit to your church. Your help would be so appreciated. Please give us a call if can help or you want any more information.

Dundee: A Tale of Two Cities? Last year saw Dundee in the news, and not always being presented in a good light! From Channel 4’s ‘Secret Millionaire’, to the Courier’s announcement of the Tayside Police crime figures revealing the Hilltown as the ‘city’s top crime spot’, the media exposed a less appealing aspect to Dundee.

Maybe the question for Dundee’s Christian community is, how can we begin to integrate the city’s halves to help make a real difference in the lives of people impacted by crime, unemployment and substance abuse? One such initiative currently taking place is Discovery Projects, run by local charity Signpost International and the Discovery Food Programme. The project brings different members of the community together to give help and practical support to people in need and, for ‘Sarah’ (not her real name), this help came just at the right time. Re-housed by Women’s Aid following serious domestic abuse, Sarah says, “I struggled to settle into my new environment and,

22

when my flat was broken into and damaged beyond repair, I didn’t know who to turn to. I felt so helpless. I was offered antidepressants and 72 hours in a medical institution because I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.”

Feature

For a large number of people this portrayal of their home city was controversial and untrue, seeing it as media sensationalism to boost viewing figures or sell more papers. However it is equally true that, for another significant section of the city’s population, this is the reality in which they live.

How can we begin to

When staff and volunteers from Signpost International, the Discovery Food Programme and young people from the Full Gospel Church arrived to re-carpet and paint her flat, Sarah was delighted. She says, “The young people made me feel completely at ease as soon as they arrived and have offered me more of an antidepressant than any doctor could prescribe. They’ve given me a new home!” This year Signpost is launching Discovery Support, a family mentoring scheme to bring much needed support to families in Dundee’s Hilltown area. Volunteers will be trained as mentors to draw alongside families, transferring parenting skills and focusing on the family’s strengths and skills to help them overcome the obstacles that they might be facing.

If you would like to find out more or get involved in Discovery Support or Discovery Projects – as an individual, church or small group – then please get in touch.

News & Competitions

City Prayer Breakfast

Competition The hope of the new City Prayer Breakfast (CPB) initiative is to see Dundee transformed through and for God’s glory. To see relationships transformed by prayerful action, to be a bright beacon on a hill. There are so many great things already happening across the city in many different churches and we want to celebrate these together while we push ahead for more. Your Kingdom come, on earth as it is in Heaven. The breakfast is not only a great chance to build relationship with our brothers and sisters across the city over a croissant, but it is an opportunity to take action – prayer is a powerful tool for change, and now more than ever we need to see change in this city, our city, God’s city. It is an opportunity to speak His word into situations affecting all of us: from the decisions being made in City Hall to ethical choices in Ninewells. From guidance for our teachers and protection over the night shift workers we pass by that morning, and everything in between. I would encourage you all to get up a little bit earlier for just that one morning a month and join us at the centre, if however this is impossible then please take time out and join us in prayer from wherever you may be. There is no agenda, no set way of doing things, just concerned Christians coming together to pray for our city.

City Prayer Breakfast (CPB) is held on the second Tuesday of every month from 7-8am in the Mark Henderson Centre on Dundee’s Ann Street. For info contact Timon or Jamie on 01382 660072, or please see http://cwpd.synthasite.com for further details. It would help if you could let us know before if you can come as it helps us with the shopping, but don’t worry, there’s always plenty and we look forward to seeing you! Christian Men Together for Scotland Christian Men Together for Scotland wants to see more men in church. We also want to see those men who currently attend church better equipped to live out their Christian faith. At the same time we want to help men share their faith with friends and neighbours.

We continue to receive requests to speak at Men’s Breakfasts and other church services and find these very worthwhile opportunities to explain what we are doing and how we can work together with local churches in developing (or starting) their men’s ministry. An exciting venture in 2010 is the tour with Tony Antony which has been organised by Christian Men Together. Tony Antony will be touring around different venues in Scotland in February during a week long series of evangelistic outreach events including Dundee on Friday 26 February. There will also be two seminars on evangelism with Tony – one in Glasgow on Saturday 20 February and the other in Edinburgh on Saturday 27 February. 38

Christian Men Together for Scotland have recently appointed their first full-time Scottish Manager, Allan Robertson. He will work with the current voluntary area co-ordinators with the aim to expand the network across the whole of Scotland. Allan is relishing the challenge. He says: “I believe that now is the time to challenge Christian men in Scotland to live out their faith on a daily basis. By God’s power we want to reach out to men all over Scotland and share with them why our faith is so important to us.” Christian Men Together also continues to work closely with The Commission which runs a one day event for Christian men on the first Saturday of February. This year the event will be held in the Royal Concert Hall (Strathclyde Suite) in Glasgow and Ian Coffey will be the main speaker. CMT would encourage as many men as possible to get along to that event.

It is a well-recorded disc of a live concert of worship songs, sung by a 400 voice choir, and some good soloists. The words are almost always clearly audible, which is unusual for choral items. Some numbers are traditional (such as “Jesus loves me, this I know”), others very recent. It moves from unqualified praise and worship (1-4, 7-8) through testimony (5-6, 9), to prayer (10-11), ending with praise in “Yesterday, today and forever.” The star track, for which alone I would buy this album, is “This is our God”, a recent Hillsong worship song by Reuben Morgan, which sets out the Gospel in some 19 lines! A wonderful song, beautifully sung by this choir. The next song “Jesus, draw me ever nearer” is sung by Kristyn Getty, is cleverly linked to two “old favourites” by Fanny Crosby, “Draw me nearer”, and “Pass me not”. This sequence is truly inspiring. Score: 4/5 Reviewer Peter Campion

Hillsong ‘A Cross /The Earth’ utilises the tried and tested Hillsong format; the mixture of fast paced songs with that riffy, rock sound that tends to get people all fired up, jumping about and having a 40

great time, as well moments that invite listeners into an intimate time of connecting with God, providing opportunities not to worry about singing words or holding a tune, but through the gentleness of the music, allow God to speak directly to you. It doesn’t take a Hillsong CD for God to be able to speak to you, but what this album does so well is provide an avenue for listeners to enter God’s presence through some powerful songs with words of sincere thanksgiving and praise, so that in the times when all that’s left is our own voices accompanied by the talented pianist/guitarist from the United worship team, we’re in a place where we’ve opened ourselves up to God and we can worship straight from the heart. A mighty arrangement of high energy praise and stirring worship anthems. Listen out for Freedom Is Here and Tear Down The Walls.

walk with Christ and it is often hard at times to cope with the challenges but the one thing we can rely on is God’s unfailing love for us. Redman’s title track is a celebration of God’s faithfulness and love for us. Score: 4/5 Reviewer Jacqui Moran

One Voice ‘Every Tribe, Tongue & Nation’

Score: 4/5 Reviewer Stuart Hamilton

Matt Redman ‘We Shall Not be Shaken‘ A new CD by Matt Redman, is in typical Redman style, full of a well balanced mix of praise and worship songs. The album is based on the faithfulness of God to us his people. We live in a world where everything is changing, we face challenges throughout our daily

From the opening strands I challenge you Not to be clapping, singing, dancing whatever you do ... to Praise our Lord. It’s just brilliant, I’m not one for gospel, reggae rap, but it works all mixed together bringing this amazing album, and such a diverse mix of musicians to. From the very catchy strains of the opening track “ What a Love “to the lovely melodic “Anywhere” and culminating with the “One Voice, One Heart” If you’re a closet worshiper, afraid to really give it all.. then this is for you ..from young to old it’s for everyone..

‘Hip Hope Hits 2009’ Hip Hope Hits is back with its annual compilation, a 17 track CD of the hottest Christian rap/hip hop of the year. The album kicks off with one of the biggest names in Christian music, Toby Mac. He brings us a remix of his song ‘One World’ which is a decent start; we then have an original track from Canton Jones ‘ I call Him God’, it’s an almost reggaeton song whose only flaw is the repetition of I call Him G-o-d in the hook, otherwise it is a good song. Listeners are treated to new solo artist Speech who used to be in old school hip hop group Arrested Development, his track ‘When it feels right’ lends the old school flavor of his A.D days with some of the new school feel. My favourite track on the album is a song entitled ‘Future’ by Verbs; a song about his true love for a lady and doing things God’s way. This track has a laid back R n B feel to it and the hook reminds me a little of super hip hop producer/slash artist Pharrell Williams. The stand out track of this compilation is ‘Walking Loud’ by Braille. It encourages to live our Christian walk boldly and it has a great beat throughout. Another track I like is ‘Bottom of the 9th’ by B. Reith. I like the words ‘Look at the Signs we’re running out of time, there’s work to be done’, it’s the bottom of the 9th. Overall this album has its fair share of mediocre tracks although there are more good tracks. I recommend this album as it represents the Lord through its rhymes and beats.

“For them to be healthy!” We want our family members to be healthy; we all want to be healthy… but do we have the same concern for our church? 9Marks Ministries is focussed entirely on building healthy churches – churches that pulse with life and grow in strength and maturity, not because they claim to have figured everything out, but because they continually strive to conform to God’s Word, humbly acknowledging their dependence on His perfect prescription for our life together. Do you want your church in Dundee to be healthy? Then come to the 9Marks Workshop in Edinburgh. It’s for everyone (pastors, leaders, members). And don’t pass up an opportunity to hear Mark Dever. Question: How do I transform my community with the love of Christ? Answer: Become a local councillor in 2012. CARE for Scotland and Evangelical Alliance Scotland are collaborating in a campaign to encourage more Christians to play an important role in impacting their communities by standing as councillors in the Scottish local elections in 2012. We are all called to be Good News through word and deed in our own communities, and there are many ways of achieving that. Becoming a local councillor can be a fantastic way of making a vital contribution in your community and impacting key local decisions with Christian values. It’s not so much about politics; it’s more about serving - having a heart and compassion for your local community. The make-up of a local council needs to reflect its community, and so there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ councillor. Whoever you are, whatever your life experience, your gifts and skills can be used. 2012 may seems years away (well, actually, it is!) but for anyone really serious about living out their exciting calling to become a local councillor, you do need to start planning now. ‘Election2012: Faith in your Community’ aims to provide all the information as well as encouragement and support to anyone wanting to serve their community in this way.

Did you know that 1 in 4 of us has had an abortion? Many struggle for years with the hurt, loneliness and grief of abortion. Do we want to reach those in need? Do we believe the church can make a difference? How much are we ready to care?

What role could you play in reaching those lost in the pain of abortion? Alternatives are here to meet that need. We are here to love through the healing process with compassion. Please encourage those who need to work through the pain of abortion. Ask God what part you could play.

OUTREACH TO VISITING SEAFARERS, DUNDEE AND MONTROSE

Hi, my name is George McAllister, I am an elder in Panmurefield village church, and I have represented the Seamen’s Christian friend society (est 1846) as Seamen’s pastor here in the port of Dundee and Montrose since 1985. Over the years I have had the immense privilege to be a friend to seafarers from many nations, at the same time communicating the good news of Jesus to those who do not know him and encouraging and praying for those who are Christians and far away from home. My own time at sea as an engineer gives me a good understanding of the life on ships. One way to encourage is to provide good Christian music and magazines that can be placed on board the ships when I visit the crews. If there are those who have music cd’s or tapes and are finished with them, they could hand them in to Dundee For Christ who will keep them for me. Also good magazines too. Regards George McAllister, 48
