Dundee For Christ have been working at full speed since a successful Resurrection Day event on Easter Sunday. On what? Well as a media ministry working and campaigning on behalf of ‘the church’ to be a Christian voice within our city and nation we look to place good news stories that reflect the glory of God in the secular media. Dundee For Christ has generated tens of thousands of pounds worth of media coverage both for our own ministry and other Christian’s groups in the City over the past 5 years. As a recent example we were particularly delighted to see a story from our Christmas edition of Broadcast featuring the amazing work of Shona Mason and the Amazon Hope boat used as a major feature in the Courier newspaper In June 08. The church has amazing good news stories to tell so let’s tell the world! We have finally gotten round to collating all these stories onto a page of our website under the page title of MEDIA/NEWS. Why not go check it out when next you have some time?

Running events that strengthen, challenge, inspire and bless the church is a key area of our work. Over the next 6 months we have some outstanding events that deliver in all these areas! ‘A Call to Purity’ in conjunction with Care Scotland is a one day course designed to equip and strengthen Christian men. Prom Praise in conjunction with from All Souls Church London is sure to inspire, and Yfriday supported by Our Future Glory from the Gate church in November will bless our church youth. Paul wrote ‘May The God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope!’ This is our prayer for the church in Dundee and that the Christian community who have been blessed with this Hope they will take and be that Hope in their neighbourhoods and communities in Dundee. Interview

D4C recently sent our intrepid interviewer Sophie Bell of The Gate church over to New York to catch up with Jon Foreman – lead singer with multi–platinum selling band Switchfoot to ask him some questions about music (his new solo project), the bands involvement with the new Narnia film and life in general. (Ok ok (Ed.) - interview was really over the phone from the D4C HQ!)

Jon Foreman How did you become involved with writing music for the new Narnia film? Well, I was asked to write for it. I’m very excited about seeing the film. Are you a fan of the Narnia books? Which is your favourite Narnia book? Yes I’m a big fan. It was an honour to be asked to write a song for it. My favourite Narnia book is the Silver Chair. It was reading the Narnia books that got me into CS Lewis. You’ve divided your first solo project into two albums consisting of Fall and Winter, then Spring and Summer. Why did you choose to do it that way? I thought I’d divide it up into songs that had something in common; the same feeling, but also different. Why did you decide that now was the time to do a solo album? Lots of reasons, one being that I’m back home in San Diego! We’re moving into a new studio now too.

6

Is that because your band went independent? Yeah, which is exciting, because we can move in different directions now. What did you enjoy about doing a solo album? Did you learn anything new from doing a solo album? Oh, lots of things! One of the things I learnt was the strengths of having a band, and the strengths of working as a solo artist. Switchfoot lyrics seem to have a philosophical quality to them. In another interview, you said that when it comes to writing lyrics, you took a ‘Socratic approach’. Could you expand on what you meant by that? Writing songs is my way of exploring questions, I approach it from the perspective that I don’t really know anything, I don’t know the answers, even after finishing the songs the questions are still there. But writing songs is how I explore life, love, sex, death, the issues and the things in the world I’d like to change but can’t.

Switchfoot is doing shows all over the States next month. What do you like and dislike about life on the road? When I’m on the road I feel like a plant in a pot; rootless. And it’s a weird feeling - one moment I’m something big, in front of huge crowds, but then during the day I’m walking round town and I’m nobody.

I saw you in concert in Perth last time you were here. When are you next going to play in Scotland? I’m not the only one who thinks this, but Scotland has some of the best crowds in the world! They’re great. So enthusiastic. Lots of other bands I know think so too. So soon, I hope. Maybe I’ll come as solo artist in the Fall, or come with the rest of the guys early next year.

What do you always have to take with you when you’re travelling around the country? My cellphone and my journal.

Are you ever going to play at Frenzy, the biggest one-day Christian music festival in Britain? I hope so. We’ve played Greenbelt before, but yeah, I’d like to play Frenzy.

Switchfoot and other bands are taking part in the Music Builds Tour, a tour to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. Why did you choose Habitat for Humanity? We chose Habitat for Humanity because it’s a roots movement - it has chapters all over the country, so we’ll be playing gigs in places where there are chapters. We also chose it because its books are so clean - a huge proportion of the money goes directly into the work.

Many Thanks for taking the time to speak with Dundee For Christ Jon

area. In addition to these regular activities I have assisted the schools by taking some RME classes and Personal Search events. Along with Scripture Union I facilitated a highly successful Personal Search Week in Monifieth High School. My visits to various churches included work with youth groups and helping with Christmas and Easter events.

8

What links these three statements? • on average 16,000 hours are spent in school • the age at which most people convert to Christianity • a time where beliefs and opinions are formed and influences are high Did you work it out? The link is adolescence; a key stage in life that is filled with a mixture of memories and regrets.

to employ a youth worker to meet with churches and schools in the area. I am Lisa Hornal and I have been in post since August 2007.

Adolescence is a time when you can have a great influence on young people’s lives. This is one reason why so many youth groups and clubs were started in churches across the world. However, modern society has shifted significantly. It is more difficult to interest young people in what churches offer so churches have to reach out to them.

Before coming to the Trust I studied at the International Christian College in Glasgow. I graduated in July 2007 with BA in Youth Work with Applied Theology. This 3 year course involved working with a local church as well as various schools and community placements.

The 7 Arches Trust is a local charity set up by churches in Broughty Ferry and Monifieth. Its purpose is

Since my arrival I have been working on raising the profile of the Trust. I have been involved in assemblies and SU (Scripture Union) groups in most of the schools in the

Enough of the past and present! The future plan is to consolidate and develop what is already taking place. Many relationships have been established and my intention is to strengthen these and make new ones. Looking to the bigger picture I want to define a clear role for the Trust within its community. Much prayer and consideration is needed here. The Trust’s desire is that it will be able to reach out to young people with God’s message in the way that He would want. Young people spend an average of 16,000 hours in school. Working with schools is the perfect way to create stronger links within the community as it also enables contact with a greater number of young people at one time. Although young people are very impressionable they have high expectations. Our aim is to portray the Good News in ways that will relate to, connect with and challenge today’s youth but will not use coercion. Young people today are searching for answers.

As Christians we can show, by our lives that we have found Someone who helps us in every day life with all its trials. Young folk want to believe in something they can see makes a difference. It is essential that we are there for them when we are needed. For this reason relationships are key to our work.

If you would like to know more about Seven Arches or keep up to date with current activities please check out the website at www.7arches.co.uk or drop me an email through the website. I’d be delighted to hear from you. Thank you and God Bless Lisa

Free homemade soup

every Wednesday 12-1.30pm, during term-time!

Student Feed

10

“Did I hear you say ‘free’?” Yes, absolutely. At Gate Church International we recognise that when students come away to university, good quality home cooking is not often high on the list of priorities. But our heart is to bless the students of Dundee by giving them nourishing lunch and also by showing them God’s love by meeting a very practical need. From 11.45, the noise level outside begins to increase with the sound of footsteps on the cobbles leading down to the side door to our function suite. The queue builds until the doors are opened and the students flood in for their cup of homemade soup and bread.

stand on the Perth Road handing out baked potatoes and beans to passing students. It wasn’t the most auspicious of starts – I mean, would you accept food from a random stranger standing on a street corner? But a start it was, and in the years since then, Student Feed has grown and grown. Today, up to 600 students are fed each lunchtime from 5 giant pots of soup! Some simply come in, choose which soup they want and take it away with them. Some take away 2 or 3 cups and lots of bread (usually the boys!!) But the vast majority come in to our function suite, sit down and relax with friends, or make new ones.

The Student Feed started in 1995 when our Pastor, Gordon Stewart was youth pastor. He and some other church members would

While there are no strings attached, we do provide literature on events that we are holding to which students are invited. For example,

one Sunday each month we hold an acoustic cafe with live music and a relaxed atmosphere where the focus is on building relationships but where short testimonies are also given. Last year we held a student Alpha course with up to 15 students from Student Feed coming along. Four of them regularly attend The Gate, either on Sunday mornings or during the week at our cell groups. This is the real fruit of Student Feed. But it doesn’t end there. Gate member and soup-maker Cath Marshall was on holiday in Dingwall with her husband Alec a couple of years ago. In the course of a conversation with a shop assistant they revealed they were from Dundee. The assistant said “Dundee? I go to art college in Dundee and on Wednesdays I go for free soup at The Gate.” Alec and Cath looked at each other and laughed. “My wife helps make the soup there” he said! What a God-incidence!

The following are quotes we have received from students at Student Feed: “I have been really stressed out all week because of things I needed to get done, and today I was hungry and realised I had nothing to eat at home but its Wednesday and this soup made me smile!” “You have kept us going every Wednesday since the start of term – its tradition! Thank-you!!!” “The highlight of our week!!! - Is that sad?!?” “Hottest place in town anybody who is anyone is seen here on a Wednesday, thanks.”

Eagles Wings Trust A cold wet night in bell street Dundee. A mission field? Yes it certainly is, at 7:30 there they are, around 15 men and women waiting for the soupkitchen to arrive. One comments “ach they winna be out tonight it’s too wet and freezing”, but another cuts him short “they are always here rain hail or shine unless there is some good reason” Soon what they have been waiting for arrives.... a Vauxhall vectra crammed full with boxes and a supplies. This is “The soupkitchen” run by a small charity called “Eagles Wings Trust”. The question has been asked many times “Why do you guys do this?” Mike Cordiner replies “We simply want you to know that God loves you and is interested in you”. This really is the essence of “Eagles Wings Trust”. Isaiah 40 v 30 and 31 says “Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and 12

not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” What a message to take to someone who as far as many in this world are concerned is in the gutter. With God they can rise out of the depths of despair and drug addiction and “fly” with new purpose and a new life. Around 8 years ago the Lord called Mike and his wife Fiona to reach out those who are homeless, or have problems with drugs and alcohol within the city of Dundee. The soupkitchen and the wider Eagles wings ministry were born out of this vision. The Trust was officially set up in June 2001 to meet the physical and spiritual needs of homeless people in Dundee. Their primary aim is to share with them the good news that Jesus Christ can set them

free. They resolve to help them in any way they can, such as finding accommodation, providing food, clothing and having a listening ear. The work of Eagles Wings though could not be done without the hard working and passionate volunteers that the Lord has brought along. Volunteers come from a wide range of churches. Churches represented at the moment from Dundee are Broughty Baptist, Hillbank Evangelical Church, Trinity Baptist Church, St Kilda rd Baptist Church and The Elim. While from Arbroath there are volunteers from Springfield Gospel Hall and St Andrews CoS. Mike continues “The Lord has blessed us in many ways over these years and although at times it’s hard, he brings us encouragement when we need it most. I would love to tell you of wonderful conversions and the transformed lives of many people, but sadly I would be lying were I to do that. The work of God that we are involved in is very often a long slow process, but we are only links in a chain of which God is the one in control. He is the one who saves and changes lives, and that’s exactly what he does”. Eagles Wings seeks to stand as a signpost telling those in places of rejection, darkness and oppression that there is a God who loves them and cares for them. It’s so easy for us to be judgmental about those involved in drug or alcohol abuse without considering how they got there, but each person has a story to tell and each one is different. Often within those life stories there are tales of pain, disappointments, heartbreak, abuse, rejection etc. “I drink to forget” said one man,

unfortunately one drink too many and he fell in front of a bus. “The Kit (slang name for heroin + the needles) eases the pain” said a girl, “but I wake up in the morning with more problems and how will I get my next fix, what will I have to do?” The people we work amongst need love most of all. Real love, not a soppy artificial sympathy, but love that reaches out like Christ did for us. If we can be a listening ear for someone just out of prison or scared of death, having just lost a friend to a drug overdose then that is what we do. A couple of days a week we are able to meet up with those who need help. Maybe to talk about spiritual matters, life in general or perhaps to help with moving into other accommodation or maybe filling out forms if literacy is an issue. Our goal is to win people for Christ but it has been said before “People don’t care what you know, until they know that you care” Who comes to the soupkitchen and who do you meet with each 13

week we often get asked. The answer is simple “People like me and people like you” as one of our older volunteers said after an unusually rowdy night “they are just children who have got lost”. There was Terry* who had suffered abuse by a family member when younger. He started drinking heavily and got involved in crime, the down ward spiral started and after serving time in prison he started drug abuse which led to more sentences. A family member told him one day about Jesus and we had many long discussions with him. He slept rough for over a year and we were able to supply him with blankets and sleeping bags at this time. An early death due to HIV took him from us we pray that he trusted Christ while he had the chance. Joyce* was young when she started cannabis use, but when she was sixteen her heroin use drove her to prostitute herself. This resulted in a number of attacks, one in which a knife narrowly missed her spine. At the soupkitchen we shared Gods love with her with some sandwiches, a pot noodle and an open ear. It was good to share with her the testimony of others at an evangelism night in the Salvation 14

Army hostel. Fred* started using drugs while still at school and slipped eventually into heroin use. Coming from a reasonably well off family lots of money was spent in a bid to free him from the drugs, but to no avail. It was great to send him off to a Christian drug rehab called Betel over a year and half ago and even better to later hear of his faith and growth in God. On Friday they told me he was still doing well down there where he now has responsibility in the centre. Thanks be to God for stories like his, but like others it started on a cold dark night, at a soupkitchen on the corner of Bell Street. A lot has changed over the past eight years, but God has been faithful at all times and has always provided for us and directed us as to what as a trust we should be doing. Over these years it’s good to look back and see how the Lord has worked in our own lives as well as the lives of some of the men and women in Dundee. To find out more or get involved with the Eagles Wings Trust please call Mike Cordiner on 07835719491

That most Christian of 16

you’re wondering I mean Purity. It’s a word we don’t often want to think about and I fully understand this. After all, we don’t generally consider ourselves to have an issue with Purity (at least no issues that we wish to discuss or consider) and so we kind of shove the concept to one side.

Philippians 4 v 8(Living Bible) 8.

And now, brothers, as I close this letter let me say this one more thing: Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about. As I sit writing this article we are deep in the throes of Euro 2008 (please don’t stop reading, I promise not to mention too much about the football!!)

a duty to be open and honest and to fix our thoughts on what is right. I know from my own experiences and the experiences of many others that this can be a daily struggle.

In every game we have had the usual supply of fouls, cries for penalties and unmentionable comments aimed at the officials.

Over the past eighteen months or so I have spoken to many men about their struggles and the ways they deal with them (or in many cases just ignore them and hope they will go away). I have seen the devastation that is caused by choices that lead us away from Purity, and the effects that those choices have on the individuals and their families.

As I focused my thoughts on these things I pondered about what I have been planning for this article. You see, life can be a bit like a football match, we play the game, we sometimes get fouled (whether or not we deserve it) and we can even feel we have been booked or sent off. But, imagine for a moment if we had to base what we do and what we say on the opening scripture ‘Fix your thoughts on what is right, etc’. How well would we do, how often do we focus on what is right as we walk through life? As Christians we are called to walk in his truth and righteousness, we have

We set out to do what we know we should, remember what Paul said in Romans chapter 7 15. I don’t understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I can’t. I do what I don’t want to--what I hate. How many of us can put our hands up and say yes, been there done that opened the t-shirt franchise!! I have tried hard not to mention the “P” word too much and in case

Principles: Purity

But…… its time I believe to redress the balance and to really look at what it means to be pure in the sight of God. Purity is not about being a prude, and its not about NOT having fun. It is about integrity, Honesty, commitment to one partner when married etc etc etc. I don’t need to spell it out to you , all I would say is please ensure that if you are struggling in this area, talk to someone you know and trust. Given the nature of this magazine its not appropriate to discuss some of the issues that men face on a daily basis, but if you’re a man (or your married to one) you will know what I am alluring to, the thing is, we need to guard our hearts and minds, as well as our eyes. As I said earlier I have spoken to many men about the issues they contend with in regard to Purity, but it needs to be said that women also have huge issues in regard to Purity, perhaps a future edition of this magazine could include an article for women by women I am sure that we all have to deal with “stuff” which drags us down and at times prevents us from being all we can be. Now, before I completely forget about football (yes, that’s where we started). Just imagine your walking with God, doing what you know he is calling you to do and

then one day you falter. Do you hear the shrill whistle of God as a heavenly yellow card descends to have you booked? Or even worse, Gabriel appearing with a RED one? No you don’t because God doesn’t work like that. Yes its true to say that if we sin , there is need for repentance and in some cases restoration , and I am sure there are those much better equipped than I to discuss those topics. God longs for us to get close to him He wants us to have an intimate relationship with him and I firmly believe that the whole arena of Purity can be a stumbling block What do I mean? Well, I know what it’s like to really make a mess of things and find God still wanting to love me, care for me and be close to me. Perhaps at this point it’s worth saying this. If you know someone that is really struggling in the area of purity, Please don’t disregard them they need to know they are loved and cared for. May I also boldly speak to pastors here, please seek to help people who are messed up due to poor choices in regard to Purity, they know they have done wrong(trust me on that) what they need is love, discipline and the knowledge that they are still part of a family, they don’t need to be disregarded. I have only touched on the surface of this huge and extremely important topic, and if I get away with it I will delve deeper in a future issue. I would like to mention briefly a conference which will address 17

Feature many issues that can cause hassle as we try to walk in Purity. There is an assumption that when Purity is mentioned its usually because someone has got involved in pornography or similar, and while that is in part true it has to be said that many issues can drag us down the impure alley

Iain Craig will be one of the speakers at the A Call To Purity event at Logie and St John’s Church on Saturday 27th September

18

The conference will address issues relating to Alcohol, anger, gambling mid life crisis, and fathers and families. There is an advert opposite which gives more details. I would encourage all men who read this to attend (oh, did I mention it’s a men’s conference?). Ladies, please don’t feel left out, you can encourage the man in your life to attend. It’s a

great day which will challenge and hopefully encourage all those who come along. Lets finish then where we started, no not the football! The scripture just above that first paragraph Philippians 4 v 8(Living Bible) 8. And now, brothers, as I close this letter let me say this one more thing: Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about. Let’s agree with Paul, lets fix our thoughts on what is true, good and right. And think about things that are pure and lovely. Iain Craig

Interview years). Early on in 2004 the Scottish Team Leader of UCCF, Stuart McPhail, was unwell for several weeks and so I also had to cover for him. During this year I realised that I really enjoyed helping to ‘manage’ Christian outreach projects, as well as students and staff. My role with LCM feels very much like a continuation of the role I played in my final year with UCCF - although the ministry context is very different!

Duncan Cuthill As a staff worker with UCCF Duncan Cuthill lived and worked in Dundee until in 2004 he left for the bright lights of London! Today Duncan is Director of Ministries with London City Mission (LCM), one of the largest Missionary organisations in the UK. D4C recently caught up with Duncan to find out a little more of what he is up to at the London City Mission. You are a director with London City Mission but a few years ago you lived and worked in Dundee and attended Central Baptist Church for a year. What were you doing in Dundee/what led to the move/and how did this shape what you are doing now? Previous to living in Dundee, I spent four years as the UCCF Staff Worker for Stirling and St. Andrews University Christian Unions, working alongside Jonathan Norgate who was the UCCF Staff Worker for Aberdeen and Dundee, and other Staff Workers in Edinburgh and Glasgow. When Jonathan finished working with UCCF in 2003, there was an unexpected funding crisis which 20

meant that UCCF were unable to replace him; as a result, I was asked to cover Jonathan’s area for a year, while continuing to support the Christian Union in St. Andrews. I decided to move to Dundee where I could get along to Dundee Uni Christian Union (CU), as well as travelling up to Aberdeen and across the Tay to St. Andrews. Since this “mega-patch” had over 500 students, I wasn’t able to do many of the things I had been involved in before, but instead had to concentrate on vision-casting and coming alongside the key leaders in each of the CUs (for example, St. Andrews CU organized a Mission Week in 2004 for the first time in five

How was the change from life in Tayside to Life in London? I have to say that I loved living in Tayside (the best part of Scotland, even though I’m from the Lothians!) and I love living in London. Both places are amazing and I can’t really say that I prefer one or the other as such, but feel that the Lord placed me in the right place at the right time for different stages in my life. As I look back at the time I spent in Tayside it seems very relaxed, very tranquil and – dare I say it – very safe and secure. Life in London is the exact opposite! London is a city of world-wide influence, mind-boggling cultural diversity, architectural innovation, lifestyle experimentation, conspicuous consumption, teenage violence and every –ism that you care to imagine! And you never know what to expect next… for example, within a mile of where I work, a traffic jam was caused last month by a homeless man - whom LCM staff had ministered to - being run over by a bus and killed near Elephant & Castle, and another one was caused by a surprise Westminster government Cabinet meeting being held in a community centre in Bermondsey. That would be like the Scottish Cabinet meeting unexpectedly in

Lochee! For me, life in London has been fun and frustrating, exciting and draining, stimulating and overwhelming - all at the same time. In the church scene, there are slightly more Black Majority churches than white or mixed race churches, which in itself creates a very different dynamic in terms of the role that God’s people play in the different communities of London. In 100 words or less who are LCM and what do they do? Our vision statement is: “London City Mission exists to share with the people of London, patiently, sensitively and individually, the transforming love of God in Jesus Christ, and to enable them to join his church.” We have about 180 paid outreach staff and 200 volunteers engaged in our ministries, including running 25 community centres, a homeless centre, two cafes, an arts centre, seconded evangelistic staff to local churches, workplace chaplains (to railway staff, underground staff, police, ambulance workers, theatre staff, post office staff, etc.) and many chaplains in other places e.g. schools, hospitals, residential homes, refugee centres and working with ethnic groups.

Interview

What have you enjoyed most about LCM? London City Mission is making a significant contribution to the spiritual well-being of the city. It is a well-respected historic organisation which is also flexible and innovative, with an emphasis on caring for all sorts of people in all kinds of ways, through kind actions and by faithfully sharing the life-transforming gospel of Christ. I enjoy being part of LCM because I believe that it is a great model of compassionate social action from an overtly evangelical platform which is of value in itself, and our work also gives compelling credibility to the gospel in a city where there is considerable negativism, cynicism and indifference towards the church. We draw on a wide-range of the best evangelical leaders in the country. For example, speakers at our annual meetings include the Rev. Sandy Millar (formerly of Holy Trinity, Brompton) and Tim Keller of Redeemer Church in New York; we also had Rico Tice, the

22

author of the Christianity Explored outreach course run training for our staff; and Dundee’s very own Rev. David Robertson is due to speak at our staff Team Day in September! I believe it is important to learn from and value different streams within the evangelical church; LCM draws on these streams and is a catalyst for greater unity in London’s churches. Also, the Chief Executive of LCM, Rev. John Nicholls, is an extremely visionary and dynamic leader who has initiated a lot of changes which I believe are making a big difference to the way that LCM operates and the impact that God is enabling us to have in various communities and workplaces across the city. The Olympics are coming to London in 2012. Does LCM have plans or a targeted response to the worlds largest sporting event arriving on its doorstep. What are the opportunities this poses? London City Mission has always been involved in sharing the gospel at large cultural and sporting events

in London e.g. the 1851 Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace, the 1948 Olympic Games at Wembley and every year we reach out with the gospel to spectators at the London Marathon. As you point out, there are exciting opportunities for outreach at the 2012 Olympic Games. It has been agreed that other Christian organisations, such as Christians in Sport, will spearhead the church’s efforts and London City Mission will play our part in supporting these efforts, but we won’t take a lead role since our ministries generally involve longterm engagement in peoples’ lives (as opposed to connecting with short-term visitors to the city), and our strength lies in reaching out in areas of high urban deprivation where there is often little or no other Christian witness. Any downsides fo life in London? I live near the Thames and there are certainly some beautiful parks in London, but there is absolutely nothing to compare to the Angus Glens or Schiehallion! Are there opportunities for Christians in Dundee to find out more about LCM & get involved in LCM? Yes, absolutely! London City Mission is always on the look out for committed Christians who enjoy (and are gifted in) sympathetically coming alongside vulnerable people and caring for their needs, and expressing the immeasurable love that God has given us in Christ, through kind words and deeds. We are not necessarily looking for academic or highly qualified professionals, but rather we need people who are willing to spend time with other people, patiently sharing their lives in a nonjudgmental and caring way, that

God might be glorified in this great city! Our approach is to ‘incarnate’ the gospel – to be people who live amongst those whom we seek to serve in deprived communities (1 Thess. 1: 5b). Given the importance of major cities in God’s plan to reach the nations, and with a population of over 7 million people, the needs and opportunities in London are massive – perhaps you could make a difference!? If you are interested in seeing some of our ministries, we are happy to arrange short-term visits. We also run a Gap Year programme for young people and a scheme for those who have recently retired… please visit our website if you would like more info: www.lcm.org.uk. We would also be happy to add your name to our mailing list so that we can send you a copy of our quarterly magazine “Changing London” which explains more about our ministries and other Christian work in London. With over 300 different languages spoken, London is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world, so if you are interested in getting involved in ‘missionary’ work without leaving these shores, please do get in touch! On behalf of London City Mission, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for reading this interview and for your prayers. Thanks for taking the time to talk with us Duncan

Church Reps

Church Reps Dundee For Christ are looking for people to act as church reps. What would this involve I hear you ask? Well! Here are some responsibilities the D4C church rep would be asked to fulfil:

• You would help co-ordinate the distribution of BROADCAST to all members of your church. Posting 5000 magazines around the city would be too expensive and making sure the magazines are effectively distributed will be crucial.

• Act as a point of reference for D4C to get information included in your church bulletin and magazine.

• Make announcements in church about upcoming Dundee For Christ events. (optional – if you feel confident enough!)

• Coordinate a D4C visit to your church. Your help would be so appreciated. Please give us a call if can help or you want any more information.

Operating in the city of Dundee the ministry is now 5 years old & the pace at which God has been blessing this ministry for His Names sake has been remarkable! Detailed here is a key fact sheet with a brief resume of who D4C are; what D4C have achieved; what D4C hope to achieve in the future as we seek to win this City for Jesus!

What is Dundee For Christ? D4C is a charitable company working in the City of Discovery to spread the glorious message of Jesus; fuelling and encouraging an army of history makers to live life out loud for Jesus! Our vision is to win the city of Dundee to Jesus Christ, reconciling every man, woman and child with God by the power of the Holy Spirit. D4C are working to see Dundee won for Jesus Christ in this generation! We passionately believe that ‘Now’ is the time for the Church, the bride of Christ, to rise up and win this City for Jesus Christ! D4C has been making a BIG impact since launching in 2003 attracting 18’000 people to hear the gospel at various events!

34

‘In 5 years Dundee For Christ 18,000 people have attended a Dundee For Christ events to hear, be challenged, changed & blessed by the Gospel of Jesus!’

What has Dundee For Christ achieved? D4C began with a poster campaign in 2003 with the purpose of making people think of the meaning of Easter. In 2004 a new poster campaign was launched promoting our first evangelistic event on Easter Sunday at the Caird Hall entitled Resurrection Day where 2000 people came to celebrate the Easter message.

In 2005 we held another successful Resurrection Day & began to bring evangelists to Dundee, including world famous Brother Yun subject of Christian book of the year 2004. D4c brought bands Superhero & Phatfish and a ‘pop-opera’ Luv Esther’ to the Caird Hall performing before 850 people! In 2006 we held a week-long visit from evangelist Tony Anthony, subject of the Christian award winning book Taming The Tiger; a praise night in Abertay University entitled ‘Sing Like The Saved’ and a ‘craicing’ ceilidh entitled ‘The Reel Fling’! Resurrection Day 07 attracted worshippers from more than 30 churches across the City. Singer/ songwriter Graham Kendrick led an amazing praise service in Caird Hall to 850 people! In November 07 Tre Sheppard, evangelist and singer with band One Hundred Hours spoke at Central Baptist Church at Sing Like The Saved event and we also have another Reel Fling ceilidh at the larger venue of Dundee University Bonar Hall. The world famous Watoto Children’s Choir sang to capacity audiences at Christmas 07 and made the regional television news!

Perhaps the hi-light of 2007 was when we secured the International super-group Delirious? in November 07! What a night! Resurrection Day 08 with George Verwer was held on Easter Sunday at the Caird Hall In Dundee with almost 2000 people attending! It was the largest Easter Celebration in Scotland in 2008! We believe events such as Resurrection Day have been an important tool in promoting interchurch unity.
