What opportunities do our pupils have on offer to support them with the university application process?
Pupils will have an array of opportunities offering them specialist insights and guidance.
Brighton College Vietnam offers various opportunities to support pupils with making informed decisions and successful university applications.

Representatives from universities across the world visit Brighton College Vietnam not only to discuss what they have to offer in terms of programs and study options, but also to provide insights into how selections are made and how pupils can learn to stand out and shine in their application With the College’s array of strong connections to some of the world’s leading universities from the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore to name just a few, our programme is diverse and encourages pupils to be curious.
With the Colleges strong connections to global admissions officers, we are very fortunate to offer dedicated workshops for our pupils from some of the world’s leading institutions
These workshops and round table discussions offer pupils opportunities to learn in depth about the institution and what they look for in their selective admissions process
The University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and University of St Andrews, Scotland session is just one example of these dedicated university focus workshops
To ensure our pupils are as prepared as possible for the university application process, we run workshops internally, enriched with external speakers when appropriate. Pupils learn how to write a personal statement or the application essays for the different countries they may wish to apply to They learn how to develop their super-curricular and supra-curricular and harness them in their applications The workshops also facilitate reflection and review of the personal statement or the supplemental essays or the motivational statement, as their quality and authenticity form part of global holistic admissions
With the core of the IB focusing on the CAS programme (Creativity, Activity and Service), the pupils have an array of opportunities to develop beyond their academics. This enrichment across sport, music, and the Creative Arts is a central part of IB pupils’ applications for university, therefore engagement in CAS is an essential component of the HE programme. Additionally, having Facultyfocussed academic enrichment opportunities including competitions in STEM, or the Social Sciences or the Creative Arts, the Brighton College International catalogue of competitions contributes to enriching our HE programme further.
Offering pupils access to visiting academic lecturers, providing taster lectures in a particular field or specialised subject area, is an incredibly enriching opportunity for them Faculty visits are an integral aspect of our HE programme at Brighton College Vietnam The series also includes access to workshops based on industry focused skills and qualities such as leadership or entrepreneurship
A central component to the HE programme at Brighton College Vietnam is the personalised approach for pupils Supporting them with individual meetings and family meetings ensures the partnership between the College and families is strong and that the pupils’ feel confident and empowered with their decision making for their best-fit future pathway

A personalised approach: What does the Director of Futures discuss in 1:1 meetings with pupils?
The meetings start in Year 11 and are a very important element of the university application process. In Year 11, pupils at Brighton College Vietnam receive a number of dedicated lessons within the RSHE curriculum run by the Director of Futures. These inform about opportunities for study in numerous countries, in addition to providing insights into specialist degrees and how degrees relate to careers and jobs. Following introductory sessions, pupils have individual meetings with the Director of Futures and the Head of IB, discussing their ideas for their future pathway along with the IB academic subject choices required, or preferred, for access not only to the university but to the degree that they are considering. With a reflection of their IGCSE/ GCSE grades, combined with the dedicated information sessions, pupils are empowered to make smart choices for their IB options. The individual meetings also offer personal guidance on the best possible package IB package that promotes their talents, strengths and interests, whilst taking into account their future aspirations and pathway ideas.

In Year 12, pupils have a dedicated HE programme integrated through the IB Core and wider timetable Pupils embark on a personal ‘My Future Plan’ task, which culminates in a personalised family meeting with the Director of Futures, parents and the pupil The pupil is at the centre of the meeting, presenting their hopes, plans and future direction, based on the work they have undertaken combined with a reflection of their academic achievement These meetings help to consolidate the long list of universities the pupil is considering Towards the end of Year 12, one-to-one sessions with the Director of Futures are more regular, as pupils have a clearer direction and pathway in mind We want to ensure that our pupils feel as prepared as possible for the application process in Year 13, therefore guidance on interview or test preparation for those countries that require is integrated Pupils engage in a range of workshops, which include the writing process and understanding the demands of the different types of writing required, whether it is a personal statement, a supplementary essay or a motivational statement
Throughout Term 1 of Year 13, all pupils work very closely with the Director of Futures as this is the main time frame for global applications submissions. Dedicated support for finalising the personal statement, college essays, motivational statement or portfolio, along with any required interview preparation, is high during this time. To further support the pupils with this busy timeline, we have in place a scaffolding approach to the HE programme, which begins early in Year 12 and includes supporting the pupils in the development of wider skills, especially with regard to managing their time and the workload, as this needs to be balanced along with their IB academic subjects. As such, the HE programme at Brighton College Vietnam is integrated into the wider IB journey for the pupils, with the Head of Sixth Form, the Head of IB and the Core team (T O K Coordinator, EE Coordinator and the CAS Coordinator), all promoting the pupils in both the pastoral and the academics
