Welcome to the Early Years Parent and Carers Handbook
We are thrilled to welcome you and your child to the Early Years at Brighton College Vietnam. This Welcome booklet has been designed to provide you with key information about our approach to early childhood education, our curriculum, policies, and the dayto-day routines that help create a nurturing and engaging learning environment for our young pupils. Within these pages, you will find all the information you need to know.
Our aim is to build strong partnerships with parents and carers, ensuring open communication and collaboration to support your child’s journey. We believe we give our pupils the best start in life.
We encourage you to familiarise yourself with this handbook, as it will be a helpful resource throughout the year.
This Welcome booklet should be read in conjunction with the Prep School Parent Handbook that contains policies and procedures applicable throughout the school.
Should you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to reach out. We look forward to working together to provide the best possible start for your child’s education.
We wish you and your child a healthy, happy and successful year!

“There are two things we should give our children: one is roots, the other is wings.”
Early Years Curriculum
At Brighton College Vietnam, our Early Years curriculum is grounded in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which guides our approach to child development and education. We strive to create a nurturing, inclusive, and stimulating environment where each child can thrive and develop at their own pace.
EYFS Structure
At Brighton College Vietnam, the EYFS includes Nursery and Reception. Children join the Nursery on or after the day of their third birthday. The children are re-grouped at the end of Reception and proceed into Year 1 at five years of age. To encourage further friendships, children are re-grouped again at the end of every school year. Our aim is to have parallel classes balanced in age, gender and ability, whilst maintaining positive friendship groups.
Areas of Learning
The EYFS curriculum is divided into seven key areas of learning and development. These areas are interconnected and help children to grow holistically:
1. Personal, Social, and Emotional Development: Encouraging self-awareness, empathy, and positive relationships with others.
2. Communication and Language: Developing listening, speaking, and understanding, with a strong focus on Phonics and language skills.
3. Physical Development: Promoting fine and gross motor skills through various activities, including PE and outdoor play.
4. Literacy: Fostering a love of reading and writing through activities that engage children’s imaginations and language skills.
5. Mathematics: Introducing early number skills, patterns, and problem-solving through practical, hands-on experiences.
6. Understanding the World: Encouraging curiosity about the world around us, including the environment, technology, and different cultures.
7. Expressive Arts and Design: Providing opportunities for creativity through art, music, drama, and imaginative play.
Teaching and Learning Approach
At Brighton College Vietnam, we know that children learn best through active engagement and hands- on experiences. Our teachers serve as facilitators in the learning process, observing children’s interests and guiding their exploration. We prioritise child-initiated play, allowing children to take the lead in their learning and discovery. This fosters independence, critical thinking, and the development of problem- solving skills.
Our approach ensures that each child is empowered to engage in meaningful learning, building a love for learning that will support them throughout their education.
By combining structured learning with opportunities for independent exploration, our Early Years curriculum provides a well-rounded foundation for your child’s academic and personal development.
Key Worker
Throughout your child’s time in the EYFS, they will be assigned a keyworker who will ensure that their learning and care is tailored to meet their individual needs. They will also share ways to support development at home. In both Nursery and Reception, your child’s keyworker will be their class teacher. Each class is led by one class teacher, supported by two Vietnamese teaching assistants, who work closely with the pupils to support them in their daily learning activities.

EYFS Philosophy
At Brighton College Vietnam, our EYFS philosophy reflects the whole-school belief that education is an active, collaborative, and joyful process. We see each child as a unique individual, full of potential, and we nurture their talents through personalised, child-initiated learning experiences that inspire curiosity and a love of discovery. Our immersive and play-based environments encourage children to explore, question, and create, while carefully structured opportunities ensure developmentally appropriate progression in key areas of learning.
From the earliest stages, pupils are introduced to specialist teaching in STEM, swimming, Vietnamese, physical education, music, and art, providing a rich foundation for their future learning. English language development remains a key focus, embedded across daily experiences and promoted within our enabling environments to build confidence, communication, and understanding. By fostering independence, creativity, and a sense of belonging within a diverse and supportive community, we prepare our youngest learners to thrive not only in school but in the wider world.
Our Guiding Principles
Our curriculum is based on four core principles:
• Unique Child: We celebrate the individuality, strengths, and interests of every child. Our approach is tailored to meet each child’s specific needs and ensure they are supported in their learning journey.
• Positive Relationships: We believe in fostering strong relationships between children, parents, and staff. These positive connections create a sense of security and belonging, which is essential for children’s development.
• Enabling Environments: Our learning spaces are thoughtfully designed to be well-resourced, inviting, and flexible. These environments encourage exploration, creativity, and independent learning.
• Learning and Development: We promote active learning through hands-on experiences, play, and inquiry. Children develop in all areas of learning, building a strong foundation for their future academic success.
Enabling Environments
Our teachers create a rich and varied learning environment for your children where there is an emphasis on a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Spaces are designed to foster a sense of belonging for the children so that they feel at ease and happy to be playing, learning and exploring their interests. Our environments are also designed to promote English language development.
Outdoor Learning
All classes have access to exciting and spacious outdoor learning environments. Here, teaching and learning enables gross motor development, construction and the freedom to explore, use their senses and be physically engaged.
Daily Routines
Arrival for all pupils: flexible drop off between 8:00 am to 8.30am Dismissal time for all day pupils: Monday to Thursday: 3:00 or 4:00 pm (if your child is staying for a CCA) and Friday 3:00pm
On arrival, parents are requested to bring their child to the classroom entrance where a member of staff will greet them. Staff will encourage the children to do their arrival ‘jobs’ and will settle them into an activity. If a child has difficulty settling or parting in the morning the teacher will help; usually a farewell followed by a swift departure is the best policy. A Seesaw message from parents to the class teacher (details on page 18) to ensure all is well is totally acceptable. We would be grateful if you would arrive promptly to collect your child at either 3:00pm or 4:00pm from the classroom.
Assessment and Reporting
At Brighton College Vietnam, we are committed to keeping parents well-informed about their child’s progress. We provide clear, personalised, and effective reports to ensure you are up-to-date with your child’s development across all areas of the curriculum.
Throughout the EYFS, we are continually assessing the children through both structured and independent activities. This informs our teaching and enables us to cater for each child’s needs and plan the next steps in their learning and development. Observations are made throughout the year and are reported on in Parents’ Evenings and the mid and end of year reports.
Throughout the academic year, you will receive three key reports:
• Settling-in Meeting: An early update on how your child is adjusting to the new environment.
• Termly Report: A mid-year review focusing on your child’s achievements and development.
• End-of-Year Report: A summary of your child’s progress during the academic year.
In addition to these reports, we hold two Parents' Evenings each year, where you can discuss your child’s progress directly with the teacher.
We value open and regular communication. Parents are encouraged to reach out if they have any questions or concerns, and teachers will also arrange meetings as needed to ensure a collaborative approach to supporting your child’s development.
Assessment for learning
At the end of the Reception year, staff complete the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile for each child. Each child’s level of development is assessed against the Early Learning Goals across all seven areas of learning. This assessment does not involve testing of any sort, but focused observations by the class teachers.

A Day in the Life of an Early Years Pupil
This is what a typical day looks like for an Early Years pupil at Brighton College Vietnam. Our daily routine includes specialist lessons and follows a play-based curriculum designed to foster curiosity, independence, and a love of learning.
During Curiosity Time, we believe that children learn best through active engagement and hands-on experiences. Our teachers act as facilitators, observing children’s interests and guiding their learning journey. We encourage child-initiated play, where children take the lead in their exploration and discovery, developing independence and critical thinking skills.
The following is a sample timetable:
Pastoral Care in Early Years
At Brighton College Vietnam, we place a strong emphasis on the personal, social and emotional development of every child. Pastoral care is at the heart of our Early Years program, ensuring that each child feels safe, supported, and valued throughout their learning journey. We believe that a nurturing environment is essential for children to thrive and succeed, both academically and personally.
How Pastoral Care is Established in Early Years:
Class Teachers as First Points of Contact: Your child’s class teacher is the first person to speak to regarding your child’s well-being, progress, or any concerns. We encourage informal conversations before or after school, but for more in-depth discussions, please arrange an appointment via Seesaw.
Supportive and Nurturing Environment:
We create a safe, warm, and welcoming classroom atmosphere where children feel comfortable and confident to express themselves and build positive relationships with their peers and teachers.
Open Communication:
We value open communication with families to ensure we are working together to support your child’s emotional and academic development. Conversations with staff are conducted in English, or with the assistance of a translator if necessary, to ensure mutual understanding.
Collaboration with Families:
We work closely with parents and carers, ensuring alignment between school and home in supporting your child’s growth. If you wish to speak with the Head of Early years, please email Ms McKee directly (sebmckee@brightoncollege.edu.vn). If you would like to speak to a member of the Prep Leadership Team, please email Mrs Bagshaw, Head of the Prep School (headofprep@brightoncollege.edu.vn).
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
We are committed to fostering a welcoming environment that embraces diversity. Our approach is centred on ensuring all children, regardless of their background, feel respected, included, and supported as they develop.
Staggered Starts and Building Relationships:
We recognise the importance of the transition into Early Years and use staggered starts to allow children time to adjust gradually. This also provides an opportunity to build strong relationships between teachers, parents, and children from the very beginning, creating a supportive triangle that fosters trust and communication.
By focusing on both academic achievement and emotional well-being, our goal is to create a balanced, holistic learning experience where your child feels supported, understood, and inspired to learn and grow.
Safeguarding in Early Years
At Brighton College Vietnam, safeguarding is of the utmost importance. We are committed to ensuring that all children feel safe, secure, and protected at all times. Safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and all members of our community, including staff, parents, support staff, and external providers, play a vital role in maintaining a safe environment for our pupils. Any breaches of safeguarding policy will be addressed in line with our policy guidance.
Our Commitment to Safeguarding
All staff in Early Years receive comprehensive safeguarding training and ongoing professional development to ensure they can effectively identify and respond to safeguarding concerns.
• Safeguarding concerns should be shared immediately with the safeguarding team to ensure appropriate action is taken.
• We promote a culture where children’s safety and well-being are prioritised in all aspects of school life.
• All adults interacting with children, including parents and visitors, are expected to adhere to our safeguarding policies and report any concerns

How Parents Can Support Their Child’s Smooth Transition into School
Starting or returning to school-whether it’s after a long holiday or for the very first time-can feel like a big step for both children and parents. A calm, consistent routine at home and at drop-off really helps your child feel secure and ready for their day. Here are a few tips to support a smooth and happy transition:
Early bedtimes
(around 7:00–7:30pm) help ensure your child gets the sleep they need to feel rested and ready for the day ahead. Limiting screen time before bed and having a regular wind-down routine helps children sleep better, which makes the next day go smoother.
Positive affirmations
Saying something like “You’re going to have a wonderful day” or “You are brave and kind” before school can help your child start the day feeling calm and confident.
Arrive on time for registration this gentle beginning to the day gives your child time to settle in calmly with the support of our staff. Late arrivals can be unsettling for your child and disrupt the class routine.
Say a quick, confident goodbye
A simple, reassuring farewell lets your child know they’re safe and cared for. Please be honest that you’ll be back later to collect them—this builds their sense of security.
Encourage independence
Support your child in walking into school on their own, carrying their own bag, and beginning to manage their morning routine with confidence.
Leave promptly after drop-off
Lingering at the classroom or trying to return after saying goodbye can make it harder for your child to settle
Connection after school
Try to give your child some undivided attention after school, even just for 10–15 minutes. Let them know you’ve missed them and are proud of them, no matter what.
Staggered Start Program
At Brighton College Vietnam, we believe in providing the best possible start to your child’s educational journey. As part of our commitment to ensuring a smooth transition into Pre-Nursery, Nursery or Reception, we have implemented a staggered start program.
What is a Staggered Start?
Staggered starts are carefully planned programs that build on our weekly Bright Start sessions that gradually introduce children to their new learning environment. This approach helps to reduce anxiety, promote confidence, and facilitate a positive settling in experience for your child.
Week 1
Collection: 11:00 am
Week 2
Collection: 12:00 pm
(*) Pupils stay for lunch.
Week 3
Collection: 3:00 pm
(*) Pupils stay for lunch, rest and relaxation time.
(*) The 3-week plan is optional; parents may choose for their child to follow the full schedule from the beginning or to follow the staggered plan, depending on their child’s individual readiness to settle.
Why is it Important?
Personalised Attention:
Staggered starts enable us to provide individualised support to each child, catering to their unique needs and preferences.
Building Relationships:
It provides an opportunity for our staff to build strong relationships with both children and parents from the outset, fostering a sense of trust and security.
Smooth Transition:
By easing children into their new routine gradually, we aim to ensure a seamless transition and a positive start to their educational journey. If a child is finding their transition challenging, we can create a bespoke pathway in collaboration with the class teacher to provide the necessary support.
Your Role as Parents
We kindly ask for your cooperation in adhering to the staggered start program. Your support is invaluable in helping your child feel comfortable, secure, and ready to thrive in their new environment.
Get in Touch
If you have any questions or concerns about the staggered start process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Our Early Years team are here to support you every step of the way (sebmckee@brightoncollege.edu.vn).

Seesaw
The primary method for contacting your class teacher for non-urgent matters. Please see further information regarding how the school uses this APP to engage home and school as partners in each child’s learning journey in the paragraphs below.
Urgent Messages
If immediate contact is required, please call our dedicated Customer Care Team at Reception on 1800 6010, and they will pass the message to the class teacher or other required department.
Email Communications
Additional whole-school updates and announcements will be sent via email from the Head of College or the Head of Prep Office.
Communication with Staff
For the privacy and professionalism of both parents and staff, communication through personal messaging platforms such as Zalo, WhatsApp, or other similar channels is not permitted. We kindly ask that all communication with staff be conducted through official school channels, including Seesaw or email, to ensure that all interactions are managed in a professional and organised manner. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Seesaw is the secure online Learning Journal that we use to record photos, observations and comments for your child, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This allows us to build up a record of each individual child’s experiences during their time with us.
Each child has an electronic learning journal which offers us a way to record your child’s special moments and to keep parents involved in a partnership as their children grow. Your child’s journal can be accessed online and we would actively encourage you to view and comment on these special moments, as well as contributing your own comments and photos about your child’s life outside Nursery and Reception. An automatically generated email informs parents when an observation has been added.
Details of how to access the journal will be shared during the ‘Meet your Teacher’ evening in January.
What should I put in my child’s Seesaw learning journal?
• You can reply to observations staff have made.
• You can let us know if they have enjoyed a particular activity and are talking about it at home.
• You can put in photos of things they have made at home or activities they have done.
• You can write a quick comment about something they have said or noticed.
The children love to share special home moments with their friends in school and it is a lovely way to encourage and develop their social interaction and listening skills.
Seesaw continues throughout Early Years and the Prep School and at the end of their time in the Early Years a PDF of their Learning Journal is generated by parents, so that a copy can be kept forever.

Lunch and Snacks in Early Years
We provide a nutritious lunch along with an afternoon snack every day. Please provide your child with a healthy morning snack and labelled water bottle (with a pull- up, non-spill spout) each day. The weekly menu is shared on the BCVN Portal and class teachers can provide updates on what your child has eaten.
Our goal is to encourage young children to develop healthy eating habits and enjoy a variety of foods.
Daily snack ideas include whole small or pre- prepared portions of fruit or vegetables, cheese cubes or sticks, whole grain crackers, cucumber slices, banana oat biscuits, rice cakes or mini smoothie bottles. Pre- prepared portions of fruit or vegetables and smaller snack pieces must be brought in a labelled container no bigger than 10 x 15cm in size.
Snacks must be nut free to ensure the safety of children with allergies.
Please note grapes and cherry tomatoes should be cut in half to avoid choking. Please note no healthy bars (e.g. cereal bars, fruit bars, fruit flakes), sandwiches, pepperamis, yoghurts in any form, sweet or savoury biscuits (this includes mini-cheddars), chocolate or sweets are allowed.
Children eat with their class teacher and Early Years Teaching Assistants, ensuring a supportive and familiar environment.
As part of our approach, we offer healthy Western and Asian options, allowing children to decide how much they would like to eat.
Lunch is served for Early Years children at 11.30am. The children are served a nutritiously balanced main and dessert course and eat with staff. We encourage the children to try each item on the menu, use their knife and fork and to use polite table manners.
Dietary Requirements and Food Safety
• If your child has specific allergies or dietary needs, this will be recorded as part of the admissions process, ensuring the correct meal is provided.
• Any updated food requirements should be communicated to the school nurse, who will inform the canteen staff and all relevant teachers. Special dietary meals will be prepared as needed.
• Several children have fatal reactions to various ingredients, so we ask you to comply strictly to the snack system and support the school in educating our children towards healthy eating.
Encouraging Independence at Mealtimes
Our lunches expose children to a wide range of foods, and we encourage them to eat independently using a fork and spoon.
Both morning and afternoon snacks follow a rolling snack system, available between 9:40–11:00 AM and 1:30–3:00 PM. This approach fosters independence, allowing pupils to help themselves, pour their own drinks, and learn to listen to their hunger cue.
End-of-Day Procedures
Pick-up Time is at 3:00 or 4:00 (if your child stays for after school CCA) and parents and carers of Early Years pupils can collect their child directly from their classroom at these times. The school gates will not open before this time to ensure a safe and orderly dismissal.
After pick-up, parents have the opportunity to speak briefly with the class teacher or Teaching Assistant if needed. However, all parents should leave no later than 10 minutes after the end of the school day to allow staff to prepare for the following day.
If a child has not been collected 20 minutes after pick-up time, a staff member will contact parents to determine their location. If we are unable to reach parents, we will contact the emergency contact listed on the child’s records and they must wait in the Lobby.
Reporting Absences
We encourage excellent attendance and punctuality, as consistent school attendance is essential for your child’s learning and development. If your child is unable to attend school, please inform us by 7:40 am?? so we can update our records accordingly.
• To report an absence, please submit an application through the Parent App or email the Pastoral Department at p.pastoralcare@brightoncollege.edu.vn and add in your child’s teacher email.
• If your child is absent and we have not received prior notification, we will contact you to confirm their whereabouts.
Attendance is closely monitored with the expectation that all pupils attend at least 95% of the school year. We understand children get sick and / or need to attend appointments. These will be recorded as authorised absences. If your child’s attendance falls below our school’s expectations, your child’s class teacher will alert you to their concerns and you may receive a letter from our pastoral leaders. Persistent low attendance and poor punctuality may result in the school taking further action to support regular attendance.
Leaving During the School Day
If you need to collect your child early for any reason, please inform the class teacher in advance via Seesaw and/or notify the Pastoral Officer Ms Duong (p.pastoralcare@brightoncollege.edu.vn). On arrival, you will not be able to collect your child directly from their class during the day for safeguarding reasons.
Celebrating Birthdays in Early Years
Birthdays are special occasions, and we enjoy celebrating them in class! We invite parents to share a birthday treat with the class to make the day memorable for your child.
Guidelines for Birthday Treats:
• Cupcakes are the preferred treat as they are easy to share with the class.
• All treats must be nut-free to ensure the safety of children with allergies. • Parents do not need to attend the celebration; birthday treats can be sent with your child in the morning, and the class teacher will manage the celebration.
• Photos will be taken during the celebration and shared with parents via Seesaw to ensure you can join in the special moment.
Birthday Gifts and Social Gatherings
To promote a fair and inclusive environment, we kindly request that party invitations, birthday presents and gifts be exchanged outside of school. If parents would like to organise gift exchanges or social gatherings, we encourage these to take place off-campus.
We appreciate your support in making birthdays enjoyable and manageable within the school setting while ensuring inclusivity and fairness for all pupils.
In order to support your child to becoming independent when using the toilet, please let them organise themselves when visiting the toilet (taking down pants, using toilet paper, pulling up pants). If a child requires support, staff are always on hand to help.
We ask the children to wash their hands with soap and dry their hands after visiting the toilet. Occasional accidents will be dealt with kindly and diplomatically. However, frequent soiling is a cause for concern which would be discussed with parents. Parents may be contacted in case of a very bad soiling accident where a child may need to go home for a shower/bath and a complete change of clothes.
Toileting Positive Behaviour for Learning
Within the EYFS, we encourage all children to develop an understanding of each other’s needs and demonstrate socially appropriate behaviour. We consistently celebrate good conduct. Staff have the opportunity to talk with parents during pick-up times where the events of the day may be discussed. This approach fosters a strong partnership with open communication between home and school.
Please see the Behaviour Policy for full information.
The Zones of Regulation
Children are supported with understanding their emotions and developing their skills in emotional selfregulation using The Zone of Regulation. To make this learning age-appropriate, we also use The Colour Monster to help children recognise their feelings and talk about them in a simple and engaging way. Our aim is for children to spend as much time as possible in the Green Zone. When children are in the Green Zone, they feel calm, happy, and ready to learn and interact positively with others. We also help children understand that everyone moves between different Zones, just like the different feelings shown in The Colour Monster. All feelings are okay, and there is no shame in being in any Zone. Children are supported in recognising their feelings and developing strategies to help themselves when they feel dysregulated.

Illness
Illness at School
All of our EYFS staff are paediatric first aid trained and are well-equipped to look after your child should they feel unwell. Our onsite medical centre is also staffed by a qualified Nurse throughout the school day. If your child becomes unwell at school, you will be informed so that they can be collected. Minor accidents may occur at school and these will be dealt with by our qualified team. All incidents will be recorded and you will be notified when you collect your child. In the event of a more serious accident, we will contact you immediately. Our Nursing Team is available throughout the school day and whenever a pupil is onsite.
