Early Years Foundation Stage Handbook 2024-25
This Welcome booklet has been written to introduce you to our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Brighton College Bangkok Vibhavadi. It should be read in addition to the Parent Handbook and school policies which are available for parents. We hope it will answer many of your questions regarding your child’s time in Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception and help establish a close relationship between home and school.
Our dedicated Early Years staff are devoted to delivering exceptional education and care for your child. They collaborate closely as a team within the department, aiming to create stimulating opportunities and challenges for your child. Should you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to raise them promptly so that one of our staff members can address them effectively.
At Brighton College Bangkok Vibhavadi, the EYFS covers our Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception year groups. Children join the Pre-Nursery during the academic year of their third birthday.
In acknowledgement of our host country, we use Thai flowers as names for each of our Early Years classrooms. Each flower name serves as a reminder of the beauty in diversity and the nurturing qualities we aspire to embody as we grow together.
We offer four-form entry to each year group. Staffing within each Pre-Nursery class will comprise of a class teacher, teaching assistant and nanny. Our Nursery and Reception classes will each have a class teacher and teaching assistant.
At the end of each academic year, class dynamics and balance are carefully considered to assess the need for potential re-grouping of classes. Our aim is to have parallel classes balanced in age, gender and ability, whilst maintaining positive friendship groups. At the end of Reception, children will be regrouped to create balanced classes before transitioning to Key Stage 1 at five years of age.
Alongside our whole school aims, during your child’s time in the EYFS, we also want to achieve the following :
• To provide a safe, secure and caring environment.
• To embed a culture of kindness where children learn the joy of helping others, begin understanding the importance of their own wellbeing and that of others and make a positive difference in their communities.
• To encourage independence and resilience and build self-confidence in a variety of social and learning situations.
• To promote the cultivation of skills vital for lifelong learning, critical thinking, and self-reflection by sparking and stimulating their curiosity, encouraging them to ask questions, explore, find ways to solve problems and enjoy achieving their goals.
• To develop a diverse cultural awareness and inclusive environment, by celebrating a range of local and global events and promoting individuality.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is divided into seven areas of learning and development with three Prime areas and four Specific areas.
Prime areas:
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Communication and Language
• Physical Development
Specific areas:
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the World
• Expressive Arts and Design
Learning is based on a continuum of development from birth to the end of the Foundation Stage. It helps us as practitioners to plan the care and learning that is right for each child at each stage of their development.
Underpinning the learning and development across all areas we look at the characteristics of effective learning: playing and exploring (engagement), active learning (motivation), creating and thinking critically.
During the day, the children take part in both structured and independent activities covering all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. The children will sometimes work and play individually, in small groups or as a whole class.
In Pre-Nursery, skills are developed through play-based learning whilst focusing on physical development, social relationships, personal interests and emotional wellbeing.
Nursery
In Nursery, the educational focus is on structured play alongside the essential first steps in reading, writing and numeracy as well as laying the basic foundations for other areas of learning. In this way, Nursery plays a vital part in preparing your child for the schooling to come.
Within both Pre-Nursery and Nursery, children are offered the opportunity to nap, according to their age. During Term 3 of Nursery, naptime is eased out of the school day in order to prepare pupils for the full school day in Reception.
Reception
In Reception, the educational focus provides a varied and stimulating balance between learning through play and more structured activities covering the seven areas of learning and development.
Specialist Subjects
Weekly specialist subjects are enjoyed by children across all year groups in Early Years. This includes lessons in music, Thai and Mandarin. Children in Pre-Nursery enjoy a weekly session of waterplay, before transitioning to our weekly school swimming lessons from Nursery onwards, which are taught by our specialist swimming staff.
At Brighton College Bangkok Vibhavadi, the EYFS curriculum is taught in ways that build on a child’s curiosity and interests, enabling them to learn through self-initiated play activities. It provides opportunities for them to explore, be imaginative, plan and to reflect on experiences in both a classroom and outdoor learning environment.
Enabling Environments
Our teachers create a rich and varied learning environment for your children where there is an emphasis on a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Spaces are designed to foster a sense of belonging for the children so that they feel at ease and happy to be playing, learning and exploring their interests.
Outdoor Learning
All classes have access to exciting and spacious outdoor learning environments. Here, teaching and learning enables gross motor development, construction and the freedom to explore, using their senses and being physically engaged.

Staff will encourage the children to do their arrival routines independently and will settle them into an activity. If a child has difficulty settling or parting in the morning the teacher will help; usually a farewell followed by a swift departure is the best policy.
We would be grateful if you would arrive promptly to collect your child at the stated dismissal times from the Early Years collection points. The children will remain inside the Early Years area until the team identifies which parent has arrived and will then call their child by name.
Collection from extra curricular activities: if your child stays for extra curricular activities sessions at the end of the school day, collection is at 3.30pm from the designated collection points.
Throughout the EYFS, we are continually assessing the children through both structured and independent activities. This informs our teaching and enables us to cater for each child’s needs and plan the next steps in their learning and development. Observations are made throughout the year and are reported on in the termly Parent Teacher Meetings and reports.
At the end of the Reception year, staff complete the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile for each child. Each child’s level of development is assessed against the Early Learning Goals across all seven areas of learning. This assessment does not involve testing of any sort, but focused observations by the class teachers.
Tapestry is the secure online Learning Journal that we use to record photos, observations and comments for your child, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This allows us to build up a record of each individual child’s experiences during their time with us.
Each child has an electronic learning journal which offers us a way to record your child’s special moments and to keep parents involved in a partnership as their children grow.
Your child’s journal can be accessed online and we would actively encourage you to view and comment on these special moments, as well as contributing your own comments and photos about your child’s life outside of school. An automatically generated email informs parents when an observation has been added.
Details of how to access the journal will be shared during the ‘Meet your Teacher’ event early in term 1.
What should I put in my child’s learning journal?
• You can reply to observations staff have made.
• You can let us know if they have enjoyed a particular activity and are talking about it at home.
• You can put in photos of things they have made at home or activities they have done.
• You can write a quick comment about something they have said or noticed.
The children love to share special home moments with their friends in school and it is a lovely way to encourage and develop their social interaction and listening skills.
Tapestry continues throughout Reception and at the end of their time in the Early Years a PDF of their Learning Journal is generated, so that a copy can be kept forever.
Please see the Uniform Policy for full information.
Snacks and drinks are provided by the school. Several children have serious and potentially fatal reactions to various ingredients, so we ask you to comply strictly with our guidelines about the bringing of any food and drinks to school. Your child will be able to bring a cake for their birthday, and small, healthy snacks for special activity days as per guidance provided at the time.
Lunch is served at 11.20am. The children are served a nutritiously balanced main and dessert course and are supervised by staff. The menu is available for parents to view weekly on the school website. We encourage the children to try each item on the menu, use their cutlery and to use polite table manners. Please keep us informed of any dietary or food allergy needs by completing the forms provided and speaking to your child’s teacher.
We have a full-time nurse and all of our EYFS staff are well-equipped to look after your child should they feel unwell. If your child becomes unwell at school, you will be informed so that they can be collected. Minor accidents may occur at school and these will be dealt with by our nurse. These will be recorded and you will be notified when you collect your child. In the event of a more serious accident, we will contact you immediately.
Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell or have a temperature. Absences need to be reported on the Absence form on the morning of absence by phone or email.
We would generally expect that by Nursery age the children no longer require nappies, and that they are mostly able to support themselves in toileting. We will work with children and families in cases where children have not quite yet reached this stage.
We ask the children to wash their hands with soap and dry their hands after visiting the toilet, as well as frequent intervals throughout the school day.
Occasional accidents will be dealt with kindly and diplomatically. However, frequent soiling is a cause for concern which would be discussed with parents. Parents may be contacted in case of a very bad soiling accident where a child may need to go home for a shower/bath and a complete change of clothes.
As parents, your support and co-operation play a vital part in your child’s education. Effective communication between the teaching staff and parents mean that your child can be given the best support and teaching based on a fuller understanding of their needs. If there is any matter likely to affect your child, e.g. moving house, parent away on business trip, bereavement, etc. please let us know.
Please feel free to ask questions or discuss worries or concerns with staff in person or via email. If you have detailed questions or matters of a confidential nature, please ask for an appointment with your child’s teacher. Similarly, if we feel your child is experiencing any difficulties at school, we would ask to meet you to discuss the best course of action.
Within the EYFS, we encourage all children to develop an understanding of each other’s needs and demonstrate socially appropriate behaviour. We consistently celebrate good conduct. Staff have the opportunity to talk with parents during pick-up times where the events of the day may be discussed. This approach fosters a strong partnership with open communication between home and school.
Please see the Behaviour Policy for full information.
Children are supported with understanding their emotions and developing their skills in emotional self regulation using the Regulation Rainbow.
Our aim is for children to spend as much time as possible in the green band of the Rainbow. When the children are feeling ‘in the green’, they are feeling safe and happy, they are ready to learn and positively interact with others. Of course, children do not always feel this way and may move into the blue, yellow or red bands. Children understand that all feelings are ok; there is no shame in being in any band of the Rainbow and they are supported in developing strategies to support them when they present as dysregulated.
Contacting a member of the Team
In the first instance, please contact your child’s teacher either in person or via their email.
During the school day, a message can be left with the Office team. The message will then be passed across to the relevant member of staff.
We wish you and your child a healthy, happy and successful year.
This Welcome booklet should be read in conjunction with the Uniform Policy as well as the School Parent Handbook that contains policies and procedures applicable throughout the school.
As this booklet is designed to help you, please let us know if we have omitted any information that you would have found useful.
