CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF BRITISH MILITARY AVIATION British military aviation reaches an important milestone in 2018 when the Royal Air Force celebrates its centenary year. Globally respected and steeped in tradition, this venerable institution provides aerial protection for the United Kingdom and her interests.

Bremont Watch Company was founded on a love of aviation, so it comes as no surprise that the brand will commemorate this significant anniversary with the ‘Bremont 1918’ Limited Edition watch.

As with previous Limited Edition watches, a percentage of proceeds will go to charity and Bremont has chosen the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), which has supported current and former RAF personnel for almost 90 years. Continuing the established tradition of the company’s collectable Limited Edition range, the Bremont 1918 encapsulates RAF heritage.

The watch’s rotor will include material from an unprecedented four exceptional historic aircraft which fought with the RAF during major campaigns of both world wars. Giles English said, “Bremont has become renowned for some of its rather special limited editions that incorporate parts of history, and this watch has become something we are exceptionally proud of.” With the 1918, Bremont is delighted to salute the RAF, the world’s oldest independent air force.

Named in tribute to the RAF’s founding year, the Bremont 1918 takes inspiration from the RAF’s rich past, as company CoFounder Giles English describes, “With this classic men’s watch we have tried to incorporate some subtle design features from the traditional RAF issue sector clock. It is also the first time that we have used an am/pm indicator, which has been carefully designed to depict the iconic Supermarine Spitfire dogfighting in the Battle of Britain during the day, and then the legendary Avro Lancaster bomber flying on a night mission lit up by search-lights. The incorporation of a telemeter, which allows the user to approximately measure the distance to an event that can be both seen and heard (e.g. a lightning bolt or a torpedo strike) using the speed of sound, is another first for Bremont.” The 43mm watch case, available in white gold, rose gold and stainless steel, houses the beautifully finished BE-16AE chronograph.

A Bristol Blenheim, a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane that all flew during the summer of 1940 are incorporated into this remarkable timepiece. Each of these Battle of Britain aircraft forms a propeller blade in the rotor and are complemented by a veneer of original wood from the Shuttleworth Collection’s 1917 SE5a which can be found at its center. A limited production of 275 steel cased and white dialed Bremont 1918s are to be manufactured, 75 white gold with a two-toned blue dial, and finally 75 in rose gold set off by a black dial. Each version will have an alligator strap.

THE 1918 AIRCRAFT Bremont has carefully selected four iconic British-built aircraft that reflect the RAF’s outstanding achievements. All four types featured are RAF combat veterans, two of which fought in the Battle of Britain. Remarkably, all are still flying today as a tangible tribute to the RAF personnel who operated them in combat.

Entering service in 1917, the Royal Aircraft Factory Scout Experimental 5 was a nimble biplane fighter. Pilots considered it a well-built, good flyer with one exception – it was underpowered. The subsequent SE5a model was fitted with a more suitable power plant, but an unfortunate engine shortage meant squadrons were not re-equipped until late 1918. In 1955, the aircraft joined the Shuttleworth Collection where it remains today. After an extensive refurbishment in 2007, F-904 regularly takes to the skies at Old Warden. A veneer of wood from the original rudder bar has carefully been machined within the UK and integrated into the rotor.

The Supermarine Spitfire, considered Great Britain’s most iconic fighter aircraft, helped turn the tide against the Luftwaffe. During the Dunkirk campaign, N3200 took a bullet to the radiator and its engine seized and it was forced to land on a beach near Sangatte. After crash-landing on the beach, the Spitfire slowly sank, until shifting sands lead to its discovery in 1986. Although badly corroded, the airframe was refurbished and N3200 is now airworthy again. Gifted to the Imperial War Museum in 2015, it flies from No. 19 Squadron’s former wartime home of Duxford. Original aluminium skin from N3200 forms one of the watch rotor propeller blades.

Considered the workhorse of World War Two, the Hawker Hurricane’s fine wartime record is frequently eclipsed by its glamorous cousin, the Spitfire. However, the strong and reliable Hurricane brought down more enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Hurricane P3717 survived service and remains were returned to England in the 1990s. After extensive restoration, today she resides at Old Warden aerodrome.

At the outbreak of World War Two, the Blenheim was the RAF’s most numerous type. Today only one airworthy example survives, thanks to a twelve year restoration by the Aircraft Restoration Company. Blenheim Mk.I-F (Interim Fighter) L6739 was a night fighter with No. 23 Squadron based at RAF Collyweston. Today L6739 flies from Duxford in tribute to the considerable bravery of the crews who flew her in darkness.

TH E ROYA L A I R FORC ES A SSO CI AT I O N (R AFA ) Launched in 1929, the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) is a charity providing welfare and support to current and former RAF personnel and their dependents. First set up to unify efforts to help Great War veterans, RAFA now has a worldwide network with over 400 branches and 65,500 members.

THE RO LE O F T HE SPI TFI RE AT DUNKI RK Most people have heard of the horrors at Dunkirk, but few know of the incredible role of the Supermarine Spitfire.

In May 1940, the Germans had surrounded the troops on the ground and death or capture seemed inevitable.

Ships were arriving from Britain to evacuate as many soldiers as possible, but the German Luftwaffe planes were machine gunning land and sea.

The only hope for halting the German bombardment, was the RAF. Pilots' log book files detail how British fighters intercepted huge numbers of German planes - the reason for this, the mighty Supermarine Spitfire Mk1. Built for high speed manoeuvres, the Spitfire was perfect for attacking the German bombers before they could reach the beaches, enabling the soldiers on the ground to escape. It's estimated that efforts from the RAF saved over a third of a million soldiers at Dunkirk.

THE CARS Nick drove a 1970 Series II 4.2L E-Type which was restored by Euan English, their father, over 35 years ago. Whilst Giles drove a 1973 Porsche 911T owned by the English family for over 20 years. With a combined age of nearly 90 years between the cars, the brothers had to keep their mechanical wits about them to keep them moving in the right direction.

BEN SAUNDERS TO TEST NEW WATCH ON RECORD BREAKING TRANS-ANTARCTIC SOLO EXPEDITION In November 2017, record-breaking polar explorer Ben Saunders set out to make the first solo and unsupported crossing of Antarctica. This west-to-east traverse from Berkner Island to the Ross Ice Shelf via the South Pole and the Shackleton Glacier was planned by Ben’s close friend Lt Col Henry Worsley, who nearly completed the expedition before falling ill and passing away in hospital in Chile in January 2016.

The journey remains unfinished.

Henry’s legacy raised over £500,000 for the charity, and Ben is determined to continue this fundraising in memory of him.

In May, marine archaeologist and Bremont Ambassador Timmy Gambin took part in a special ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of HMS Olympus which was tragically lost in 1942. The vessel struck a mine in the early hours of 8th May and nearly 90 men perished in what has been known as one of the worst naval disasters of the second world war. Only nine of the vessel’s crew members survived after swimming seven miles back to shore in cold water.

The spot where the 283-foot-long submarine sank in the Mediterranean Sea was a mystery for 70 years and was only discovered in 2011 using side-scan sonar technology to survey the seabed. This was a project in which Timmy was heavily involved as the archaeological director of the Aurora Trust, a team of expert divers.

2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the wreck and to mark the occasion Timmy led an international dive team to descend 115 meters to the site where they laid a memorial plaque by the shipwreck. A monument was also unveiled to honour those who were lost overlooking the former Royal Navy submarine base off Manoel Island, Malta. Timmy and his team wore the three Bremont Supermarine watches during the dive, which are the exclusive watches being auctioned. The watches are an S300/BL, S300/BK and S301 all with the HMS Olympus crest on the dial and 100% of proceeds will go to the HMS Olympus Memorial Fund.

In July 2017, Great British rower Alex Gregory joined a crew of international rowers on a pioneering Arctic expedition from Norway to Svalbard. Unfortunately, the crew got into difficulty, they had no sails and no motor and had to head towards the island of Jan Mayen, where they were stranded for over two weeks. Alex, who had been truly tested beyond endurance, shared this image of his hands which got a lot of coverage online. @AlexGregoryGB

B ER N I E B ROA D Invictus Games UK Team Captain Bernie Broad, a former Army Major with the Grenadier Guards, lost both his legs below the knee due to injuries sustained in an explosion in Helmand Province in 2009.

He underwent four and a half years of extensive surgery whilst at the same time undergoing rehabilitation at DMRC at Headley Court. He said: “Since being medically retired from the Armed Forces in 2014 after 32 years’ service, I felt that I had lost my motivation and drive and had become quite complacent. I am looking forward to taking part in the Invictus Games as I see this involvement as a way to re-focus myself physically and mentally and to re-engage in a full, active, competitive and fulfilling life.”

War hero auctions Bremont watch for charity, then buyer gives it straight back to him Mark Ormrod, who recently won a silver medal for indoor rowing at the Invictus Games for injured military veterans, donated his Bremont RMC watch at an auction raising money for the Royal Marines Charity. It was initially sold for £12,500 to a bidder who has not been named. That bidder then declared that he would return the watch to Mr Ormrod if somebody else matched his bid. The bid was matched, the watch returned to Mr Ormrod, and £25,000 was added to the total of £156,000 raised on the night.

KEL LY GA N F I EL D Invictus Games UK Team Athlete Former Corporal Kelly Ganfield was medically discharged in 2005, and suffers from visual impairment as well as epilepsy. Kelly, from Plymouth, said: “Trying out for the Invictus Games has given me a purpose and sense of hope and achievement. I had lost my identity and confidence since leaving the Army, but the Invictus Games has ignited desire, drive and a commitment to be somebody again. I now have an identity and feel part of something amazing.

I am growing in confidence all the time and finally feel deserving of these opportunities.” Kelly, who competes in athletics (100 metres, 200 metres and discus) and rowing, needs support using the rowing machines as she cannot see the screen, and requires a guide to run with. However, she no longer lets requirements like these stop her from training as hard as she can.

Invictus Games UK Team Athlete Former Royal Marine Commando Mark was out on a routine foot patrol in Helmand Province in 2007 when he stepped on and triggered an Improvised Explosive Device. He lost both his legs and right arm. Despite his injuries, Mark won four medals and was presented with an Exceptional Performance Award at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto.

The Bremont U-2 was designed exclusively for, and tested extensively by, the elite Spy Plane Squadron based at Beale, California. These incredible pilots regularly take their iconic aircraft up to 80,000 feet on reconnaissance missions that often last over 12 hours. Three retail models are available, which have all been put through their paces at 100,000 feet and -50°C in the laboratory and out on missions.

Great Britain has a wonderful history when it comes to watch making and has probably been the home to more advances in horology than any other nation. Bremont is determined to play a pivotal role in the reinvigoration of this industry on British shores. Bremont builds many of its own watch components at its state-of-the-art parts manufacturing facility in Silverstone. As a company we verge on the obsessive in the desire to produce watches that are over-engineered for the task in hand. This passion becomes very evident when you hold a Bremont watch.

The love and passion for aviation has coursed through the founders' veins from very early in their childhoods. There has always been a very close association between time and aviation since the first brave adventurers took to the skies over 100 years ago. All Bremont watches are manufactured and assembled at our workshops in the UK

Bremont is excited to be at the heart of a British revival in watchmaking. Our goal has always been to bring back as much of the process to the UK as possible and our watches are all designed, manufactured and assembled in England.

Our British watchmaking facility is located in Henley-onThames, South Oxfordshire. A beautiful oak-framed building in the heart of the Chiltern Valley, it has been custom built for watch manufacture. Our long-term staged investment programme is aimed at developing watchmaking expertise in the UK. All of our key movement and case components are assembled and finished in Henley.

Bremont is making considerable investment in its UK watchmaking and manufacturing and in 2014 launched a new facility to produce case and movement components. This is part of a long staged investment programme and has seen Bremont invest in some state-of-the-art CNC mill-turning, metal cutting and finishing machinery, some of which are the first of their kind in this country. This investment will enable Bremont to manufacture significant quantities of beautifully engineered and finished watch parts on British shores. Alongside Bremont’s Henley based watch assembly facility, Bremont’s Parts Manufacturing Facility offers the best foundation for growth.

T H E ME C HANICAL WATCH Bremont is built on precise timekeeping. Only the highest quality components are used in our movements. Every watch in our core range is chronometer-tested, then further subjected to a rigorous quality control programme. The results are all documented in detailed records securely stored at our headquarters. The only exceptions are some of our limited edition pieces, for which a stringent testing programme is well inside the C.O.S.C parameters. Every watch in our core collection is accompanied by a performance certificate issued by the ‘Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres’ (C.O.S.C).

The certificate confirms that the mechanical movement has passed each of the rigorous precision tests necessary for the chronometer designation.

Watches are the most precise mechanical devices on the planet. Bremont aims to keep it that way. Our watches are subjected to rigorous testing procedures. For example, chronometer certifications take 15 days to complete over several different temperature ranges and watch positions.

The average daily variation rate must be between -4 and +6 seconds. With 86,400 seconds in a single day, it means every single Bremont watch is 99.998% accurate.

Bremont Roto-Click® Many Bremont watches have been designed from a clean sheet of paper. New bezel technology designed and built in-house is now integrated into a number of models such as the MB. The bezel rotates while gliding on a series of four ball bearings. These bearings knit into the gearing of the bezel to produce a most satisfying click for every minute rotated.

2 Bremont Anti-Shock Designed by Bremont initially for the MB range of watches, our unique rubberised movement mount encloses the inner workings. A flexible ring then connects the mount to the outer case, absorbing shocks and allowing the inner case and movement to float.

Anti-Magnetic Faraday Cage A number of Bremont models are designed to withstand the detrimental effects of magnetism on a watch’s movement. With a limited amount of space available, this is achieved by encasing the movement in a soft-iron Faraday cage. Any potentially harmful magnetic fields are then routed around the movement.

The BWC/01 movement, pictured here within the Jaguar MKI, has been part-developed and designed in Britain with our Swiss partners. A number of the key constituent movement parts are also manufactured at the company’s workshops in the UK, which is the first step for Bremont towards manufacturing movements in their entirety on these shores.

The separate middle section offers flexibility in both durability and design. It allows us to manufacture cases from different metals, such as titanium, to alter the watch’s weight. DLC, meanwhile, adds to the variety by using contrasting colours to distinguish between models.

B RE MON T TEST ING Testing. It’s something of an obsession. Our first five years were devoted to it, both in the workshop and in the field. Watch parts are continually tested for tolerances, strength, hardness and finish. In fact, every single component undergoes the most rigorous quality controls and it doesn’t stop there.

Each movement in our core range is independently chronometer-tested over 15 days. Once assembled in their hardened cases, the movements are then checked and tested again before being regulated by the watch makers.

The watches then enter a further testing programme involving mechanical and visual inspections. Finally, chronometers are assessed for accuracy, functionality, automatic winding and water resistance. So yes, testing is an obsession. But one that results in every timepiece leaving our workshop with a 3-year warranty.

Bremont watches have been tested beyond endurance by explorers, adventurers, extreme divers and the military. Now, it’s your turn.

B RE MON T FE ATURES

Bremont Sapphire Watch Crystals Our convex sapphire crystals come with a Mohs hardness rating of 9. That’s also the equivalent to 2000Hv on the Vickers scale. Untreated crystals can allow light to reflect back, significantly affecting the legibility of the dial. So antireflective coatings are vapour-deposited to both sides of the glass in a vacuum environment, reducing reflections to less than 0.5% for optimum legibility.

Helium Escape Valve The Bremont Supermarine range features a helium escape valve. This spring-loaded single-direction valve is activated when the differential between the inner and outer pressure reaches a critical level. This results in the release of the gases trapped in the watch case. Watches with helium escape valves are pressure tested at our workshop.

Super-LumiNova® Bremont carefully applies as many as 15 to 20 coats of SuperLumiNova® paint to a range of dials in our collection. It ensures optimal visibility in the poorest of lighting conditions.

Bremont B-EBE2000 Watch Case Treatment Bremont watches, including our polished models like this ALT1-C/PB, are treated for hardness with B-EBE2000 technology.

During this special stage in the case production the metal is heat-treated and defused with carbon, then bombarded with electrons. The process dramatically increases the hardness and scratch resistance of the stainless steel. On the Vickers scale of hardness, for example, B-EBE2000 produces a watch case with a value of 2000Hv - approximately seven times that of the normal stainless steel used for watch cases.
