MIND OVER MATTER ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’

On 8 January 1942, 300 years to the day after the death of Italian astronomer Galileo, Stephen Hawking was born. With characteristic humour, he later estimated that at least 200,000 other children were born on that day. It seems only one became a world-famous theoretical physicist.

Hawking grew up in St Albans, where his intellectual family were deemed eccentric by local standards. They drove around in an old black cab and preferred reading books at the table to conversing during mealtimes.

Although Hawking’s performance at school was average, his friends nicknamed him Einstein, suggesting they knew more than his teachers of his mental ability.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Hawking won a scholarship to Oxford University. Aged just 17, he adopted the prevailing attitude towards work. Either you were brilliant and achieved great results with no effort, or you accepted failure. Studying was most unfashionable. Despite this lack of effort, he scraped a first and negotiated a place at Cambridge University as a graduate student of cosmology.

Over time Hawking noticed he was becoming more clumsy and was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The prognosis was bleak. Not only would this rare disorder weaken his muscles to disability, the doctor estimated the 21 year old had just two years to live. Hawking sank into depression, unable to see the point in continuing his PhD. It was love that returned purpose to Hawking. He credited his engagement to Jane Wilde for saving his life. In order to get married, he would need a job and for that he would need to complete his PhD. His attitude towards work changed: ‘When you are faced with the possibility of an early death, it makes you realise that life is worth living and there are lots of things you want to do’.

During thirty years of marriage, Stephen and Jane raised three children: Robert, Lucy and Tim. With Jane acting as wife, mother and carer, Hawking embarked on a brilliant scientific career. He acknowledged that, ‘Without the help that Jane has given I would not have been able to carry on, nor have had the will to do so.’

THE BIRTH OF THE UNIVERSE ‘My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.’

Today the Big Bang Theory dominates modern cosmology. When Hawking’s PhD was published in 1966, it was neither widely known nor accepted. His thesis showed that the universe could have begun from a single point: ‘The proofs I worked out in 1965 … demonstrated that, according to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, space-time must have a beginning in the big bang and an end in black holes.’

With his body failing, Hawking harnessed the full strength of his mind to further explore black hole theory. His colleagues believed he had a unique ability to visualise problems, even the fourth dimension of space-time, enabling him to envisage solutions in his mind. Getting into bed one night in 1970, he had a ‘eureka moment’ when he realised that the boundary of a black hole could never decrease in size. Too excited to sleep, Hawking waited until the morning to contact his colleagues.

This moment lead to a series of other discoveries including Hawking radiation: ‘My 1974 prediction that

black holes should appear to emit radiation brought together general relativity and quantum mechanics, the two great theories of the twentieth century.’ It posed the possibility that over time a black hole could evaporate. Hawking’s work revolutionised the accepted knowledge of black holes and his achievements were recognised. At 32 he was elected as a Fellow to the Royal Society, one of the youngest ever. At 35, he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a prestigious post also held by Sir Isaac Newton.

Hawking’s disability never stopped him travelling the world to work with other scientists. During a trip to California, he was given an electric wheelchair that provided him greater independence and mobility. In 1985 he contracted pneumonia on a visit to Geneva. A tracheotomy saved his life but he lost his ability to speak. The provision of an electric voice synthesiser, operated by tiny physical inputs, enabled him to communicate albeit slowly. Before the tracheotomy, speech was difficult for Hawking and required an interpreter. Of the synthesiser he said, ‘I can communicate better now than before I lost my voice’. His new computerised voice became an unmistakeable trademark. The synthesiser enabled him to finish the book that made him a household name.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME ‘We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.’

Hawking wanted to publicise the progress physicists had made towards understanding the laws that govern our universe. When he approached publishers with a first draft for a popular science book, they told him that every equation within would halve sales. A number of scientists understood theoretical physics, but Hawking wanted his book on sale in airports so in order to make his field accessible to all, he needed to simplify the subject. The final version included only one equation (Einstein’s theory of special relativity - E=mc2).

Published in 1988, ‘A Brief History of Time’ enjoyed sensational sales, rapidly becoming a landmark publication. His book spent 237 weeks in the bestseller charts and sold over 25 million copies worldwide in 40 languages.

The success of the book propelled the author to celebrity status. People were fascinated by Hawking’s genius and personal courage. His sharp sense of humour and

charisma were displayed during interviews and lectures worldwide. He experienced adventures on the way like a submarine voyage, a South Pole trip and a zero-gravity flight. Now an icon of popular culture, he made cameo appearances in television series, and his life was portrayed on the silver screen. He wrote more books, including a science series for children written with his daughter Lucy. Although in high demand, he balanced the whirlwind of fame with science, continuing his research in relative normality at the University office he had occupied since the 1960s.

For much of his career, Hawking searched for a theory of everything, one mathematical law that would unify general relativity and quantum theory.

His final lines in ‘A Brief History of Time’ explain that if discovered, it should be understandable to everyone: ‘Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we would know the mind of God’.

In March 2018, Hawking passed away. Tributes flooded in for the 76-year-old scientist. Hawking lived with the prospect of an early death yet survived 55 years beyond the doctors’ initial prognosis. As a brilliant physicist, he used his time to search for answers. As a promoter of science, he and his legacy inspire us all to keep asking questions: ‘Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.’

One of Bremont’s proudest achievements to date was the beginning of an official partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in 2019, paying tribute to Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

Through this partnership, Bremont became the sole luxury watch producer legitimately allowed to use the signs, symbols and Heraldic Badges of all three services; the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

2020 sees the introduction of the Broadsword Bronze timepieces, adding to the original line up in Bremont’s Armed Forces Collection. The use of bronze nods to the material’s importance in naval engineering due to its high corrosion resistance to salt water. The new Broadsword case is made of CuSn8 bronze, a solid solution strengthened copper alloy with 8% tin. The high tin content adds to strength, wear and resistance to corrosion. The Bremont Broadsword was originally designed as a contemporary take on the three handed ‘Dirty Dozen’ watch design, a series of timepieces commissioned for the British Army during World War Two when Britain’s Ministry of Defence needed watches to issue to military personnel.

The new bronze editions will be available in three different coloured dial and strap variations, complementing the existing range. The ‘slate’, ‘sotek’ (a military green/teal colour) and ‘tobacco’ dials feature a sub-seconds hand at six o’clock as well as multiple layers of luminous paint on both the dial and hands to complete the original specification for the British Army. The Broadsword Bronze houses the chronometer rated BE-95-2AV movement inside its two-piece 40mm case featuring a steel, screw-in case back stamped with the badges of all three services.

As a ‘living’ metal, each model will develop its own unique patina over time, meaning no two watches will ever look the same.

In the 1940s very strict performance specifications for the original Dirty Dozen were set which included waterproofing, regulation to chronometer specification, luminous markings on the dial and a robust case construction. The Broadsword has not only been designed and engineered to meet these criteria but also to reflect the needs of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces today.

As with all Bremont watches, the Broadsword Bronze will be produced at the company’s headquarters in Henley-on-Thames, UK. Bremont’s well-respected heritage and reputation within the military, specifically with the British military, made the British watchmaker the natural partner of choice for the MoD. Bremont has created numerous special-order projects at the request of personnel from all branches of the British armed forces and is widely recognised throughout for its discretion, its patriotism and its reputation for supplying products that are fit for purpose.

Flight has inspired and benefited us all. The question today is how aviation meets the demands of a growing, more connected society with sustainable, net zero carbon power. A race for change has started and RollsRoyce is pioneering this next generation, and indeed revolution, in aviation.

Bremont is teaming up with Rolls-Royce to become the Official Timing Partner for its all-electric speed record attempt. A dedicated team has been developing the plane, aptly called the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ and are aiming for the zero-emissions aircraft to be the fastest in history. Rolls-Royce is aiming to surpass the current record of 213mph by reaching speeds over 300mph early next year.

Bremont was involved in the design of the plane’s cockpit which will feature a Bremont stopwatch, and the company has machined canopy release parts from its Henley-on-Thames manufacturing facility. Bremont is also releasing a new mechanical chronometer called the ‘Bremont ionBird’ to celebrate the partnership, which the test pilots will be wearing for the development and record-breaking flights. The Bremont ionBird uses a lightweight aviation grade titanium 43mm case and houses a BE-93-2AV chronometer rated GMT movement which is safely cushioned against shock using Bremont’s proprietary ‘Anti-Shock’ technology inside the case.

The two time zones are clearly displayed on the very readable dials, and there is a nod back to the early days of aviation with the vintage feel numerals and bronze hands. The watch will be available on a brown nubuck strap.

Aside from being a pinnacle of engineering, ‘Spirit of Innovation’ marks a partnership between two global companies with British roots dedicated to precision engineering. Rolls-Royce has an incredible history of supporting record flying speed attempts dating back to the remarkable Schneider Trophies of the early 1930’s when R J Mitchell’s Supermarine S.6B flew to victory powered by the state-of-the-art Rolls-Royce ‘R’ engine. Bremont has previously paid homage to these incredible achievements with its Supermarine range of diving watches. This new attempt, to become the fastest electric aircraft is aiming to take place in early 2021 with a zero-emission aircraft unlike anything the world has ever seen.

In addition, Bremont has joined with Rolls-Royce to produce an App that will be used to aid the accuracy and safety of flying the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ on its remarkable journey to becoming the fastest all-electric aircraft. Working with software developer ‘Compsoft’ the App has been designed to provide checklists, timing functions and many other aids to efficiency and safety in the cockpit of modern aircraft. This soon-to-be-released App can be used by amateur and professional pilots alike. For the development and record breaking flights, the ionBird chronometer will be able to communicate with the App via its new Bluetooth ‘alerting’ strap that updates and informs the pilot when certain timing features within the App are reached. With a hugely demanding record profile to fly, where time management will be critical, the unmistakable ‘tap on the wrist’ from the Bremont ionBird strap will be vital.

2019 saw one man achieve the impossible. It is unlikely in this lifetime that anyone will complete something of the magnitude that Bremont Ambassador Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja MBE accomplished in just 6 months and 6 days. Nims firmly took his place in mountaineering history when he completed Bremont Project Possible, a challenge to summit Earth’s 14 tallest mountains, all higher than 8,000m, in less than 7 months. Smashing the previous record of nearly 8 years and breaking a further 6 world records in the process, it’s arguably a record unlikely to be broken. The 14 mountains all enter the ‘death zone’ at that altitude, so-called because human life cannot exist there. Unphased by the enormity of the challenge, Nims never contemplated failure.

To celebrate this remarkable feat and the ultimate mountaineering goal, Bremont released the Limited Edition Bremont Project Possible. Limited to only 300 pieces, the GMT diver is based on Bremont’s celebrated Supermarine 500. Built from titanium and bronze, the timepiece boasts a dark

blue dial with bronze bezel and ceramic blue insert, teamed with bronze hands. Turning the watch over reveals an open case back through which the rotor can be seen which details the heights of each of the 14 mountains, and in the order that Nims summitted them. Even with the sapphire case back it is still water resistant to 500 meters and although built in limited numbers its strength as a mountaineering watch has not been diminished.

THE HOME OF BRITISH WATCHMAKING; AN UPDATE ON OUR NEW HEADQUARTERS Our long-term vision has ultimately been to play a part in the revival of British watchmaking. We knew the journey wasn’t going to be easy, it’s certainly been a marathon up until this point and one that we are very much still running.

However, our new watchmaking facility, due to open in spring 2021, brings us ever closer to reaching this goal.

It was over four years ago that we started our exhaustive search for a new site to house the whole UK team together under one roof. With so many different parts of the business to please this was always going to be challenging.

Devising a space to accommodate sizeable dirty CNC machines near a watch assembly area, where the smallest bit of dust can prevent a watch being built, was going to stretch the confines of any space. That’s not forgetting the need to keep Nick happy in his ivory tower!

After an extensive search in a wide area around Henley, we concluded there wasn’t going to be anything suitable already on the market. We needed to start afresh and build a brand new state-of-the-art facility that would be able to satisfy all of our business requirements from manufacturing to marketing.

Culden Faw Estate, our current landlord, came to the rescue as they had some land that we were able to use for our development. So, with a lot of hard graft over the past few years and working with South Oxford District council as well as our architects, Spratley Partners, we have got to this rather exciting point…

FAVOURITE MOMENT AS A RETAIL (THRUDARK) DIRECTOR YOURSELF? Summiting Everest for the second time the day after Nims Purja. Both of us were wearing the ThruDark bespoke summit suit, it was a huge achievement not only for Nims and me, but also for the brand to be so highly recognised and create something that helped Nims and me achieve our goal.

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO CONTINUE TO BUILD YOURSELF AND THRUDARK AS A BRAND? A continued strive for excellence and a drive to do better today than I did yesterday.

This is the culture of the Special Forces and something that I have continued in my day to day life, that translates in everything that I do, including ThruDark. With ThruDark we are consistently looking to improve what we are doing, improved products, stronger materials, testing environments and building an experience, which perfectly links in with Bremont’s brand philosophy.

WHAT MAKES THE THRUDARK AND BREMONT PARTNERSHIP UNIQUE? There is a strong relationship between the two brands, they both share similar heritage.

Both are unique to British brands, they both produce the highest quality products that are built to last and endure the most extreme situations. They also both have links to the military with ThruDark’s founders who are both Ex Special Forces and Bremont who make custom military watches.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING TO STAY SANE DURING THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN? Exercise was very important as part of my lockdown routine. I just made sure that I kept to a routine and had certain tasks that I held my self-accountable for daily so that at the end of the day I felt like I had achieved something. Staying active mentally and physically. I’ve always known this but it really reminded me of the importance of friends and family, as I’m sure it had for many others.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD HAVE DONE AFTER THE MILITARY IF YOU HADN’T JOINED THRUDARK? I had a thousand ideas going around my head. I wanted to do something that would include my passion for exploration and the mountains and continue to climb 8000m mountains. I was also going to do an MBA, but the timing worked well with ThruDark even though at first we all took a massive pay cut and there were obvious risks. I always knew if everything failed there was still the chance to get back into the military.

MEET EX-SPECIAL FORCES OPERATIVE JAY MORTON WHY DO YOU THINK HERITAGE AND THE STORY OF THE COMPANY IS SO IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE ENGAGING WITH BRANDS IN 2020?

It is important that people know the story and heritage of a brand. It allows them to feel connected to what they are purchasing and part of the story. There are so many brands to choose from on the market, it's important that you choose ones that have a strong heritage that resonates with you as a buyer.

FAVOURITE EVER BREMONT PRODUCT YOU’VE OWNED? My favourite Bremont product is the S2000. I wear it every day and for everything that I do. It has built in ‘anti shock’ that makes sure that whatever activity I’m doing it remains protected. I surf in it, climb in it, have taken it on expeditions and adventures, it never leaves my wrist.

WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE FUTURE OF BRAND AMBASSADORS AND “INFLUENCERS” IN THE MARKET? Brand ambassadors have a very important role to play considering how popular and influential their social media is. They should be looking to inspire people in a positive way.

For me, I want people that engage in my content to leave feeling inspired and want to push themselves in a positive way to achieve more. That is how I live my life and I’m always engaging with people that do the same to me.

PUTTING ENGLAND RUGBY STAR TOM CURRY TO THE TEST IN THE BREMONT WORKSHOP As the Official Timekeeper of England Rugby, Bremont is proud to have a new ambassador in England star, Tom Curry, who became the youngest player to start an international for England in 90 years when he made his senior bow in Argentina on the 2017 summer tour.

Taking a brief step away from training earlier this year, Tom took the time to visit the RFU’s Official Timing Partner to try his hand at watchmaking and assembling the Bremont Rose.

As a self-confessed watch geek, we were thrilled to welcome Tom to Bremont’s Headquarters in Henley-on-Thames and were incredibly impressed with his natural aptitude for the craft. Tom was a dab hand at picking up new skills as he was put to the test by Bremont watchmaker Luke Mitchell, with the support of brand Co-Founder Giles English.

Bremont is delighted to be Official Timing Partner to both England Rugby and Twickenham Stadium in a collaboration that celebrates shared values of durability, precision and technical ability. Through the new partnership, Bremont will be delivering all of Twickenham stadium’s official time-related match day content, including branded match clocks around the stadium. CREATE YOUR OWN MB, FROM OVER 1,000 POSSIBLE DESIGN COMBINATIONS It’s been over 10 years since the first iconic Bremont Martin-Baker (MB) watch was released; a design born of the challenge to create a unique time piece for pilots that had ejected using Martin-Baker ejection seats.

Whilst additional MB variations have been introduced along the way, the original design on which they’ve all been based hasn’t been updated - until now.

Maintaining the original Bremont MB DNA has been critical so the new MBII models are a natural design evolution. What has been imperative is that the core principles and the rigorous testing programme of the MB range remain unchanged. As well as refining both white and black dial MBII models, a new blue dialled version has been added. The new dial design boasts bolder and more readable hands, a more contemporary styling of the numerals and a cleaner look with the removal of the day function. A newly designed case back is inset with a bronze coloured ‘military challenge coin’, historically used to represent membership of a unit/elite group of people or service on a specific tour of duty. Housed inside is a new movement design alteration with a more shock resistant automatic bridge.

Having admired each squadron’s own take on the design, Bremont is excited to introduce a new online configurator which will enable customers to design their own MB. The online system will have preloaded dial, case, case back, barrel and strap choices to choose from for the MBII. The barrel colour options are blue, orange, yellow, green, and anthracite as well as military inspired purple, bronze, jet and titanium. The new movement design can be seen through a special open case back version which is a first in the MB collection There will be over 100 different possible designs in terms of case and dial, and over 1000 factoring in the different straps. Included in this are several new barrel colours than are presently available ‘off the shelf’; red of course still being reserved solely for MB ejectees. THE ALT1-C GRIFFON, THE LATEST IN THE BREMONT CLASSIC PILOT’S RANGE Earlier this year, Bremont released a new classic in the form of the ALT1-C Griffon, paying tribute to the Spitfire that brand Co-Founders Nick and Giles English’s father operated and is now owned by RollsRoyce. The PR Mk XIX was the last of the specialised photo reconnaissance variants of the Spitfire, one of the few with a Griffon engine and arguably the finest of them all.

Bremont is steeped in aeronautical heritage by virtue of the English brothers who grew up in and around aviation, who both became pilots themselves and were subsequently supported through university by the RAF. With this passion for flying, aircraft and all things mechanical running deep, Bremont has always specialised in pilots’ watches. The original ALT1-C was in fact the first Bremont timepiece that the brothers ever designed and has been a bestseller for the brand since its debut back in 2007. It has become the staple pilot’s watch within the brand’s stable.

Giles English “The ALT1-C has become an iconic part of our history and, whilst it’s a timeless classic, we always enjoy revisiting our designs and evolving them. It’s lovely to know the Mk XIX Spitfire is a well-loved part of the Rolls-Royce collection today, not only a speccial aircraft but one which also holds personal significance to myself and Nick. Whilst the Griffon retains the core DNA from the original ALT1-C Cream, it has an updated dial and

hands and the detailing on this new model harking back to some early chronometer designs with more of a ‘military instrument’ feel to it. The cream lume certainly adds to this effect, very much reminiscent of the lume one might have seen on such equipment.

A fusion of sublime craftsmanship with the very best of technical innovation, precision and durability, the Griffon is a firm new favourite within this family of watches. The beautifully finished mechanical movement can be seen through the exhibition case back.

A PILOT’S WATCH THAT DEFIES GRAVITY: BREMONT LAUNCHES ALT1-P2 JET Bremont is proud to add the ALT1-P2 JET to the collection, based on the original ALT1-P pilot’s watch, the definitive aviation chronograph. The hardened DLC case and black dial of the ALT1-P2 JET combined with Bremont’s iconic ’51 lume’ offer total clarity and legibility to the wearer. Passionate about celebrating British engineering and innovation, and as part of the testing cycle, Bremont has teamed up with veritable aviation pioneers Gravity Industries to put the new watch through its paces. This is the first DLC-coated case in this line and turning the watch over reveals a smoked crystal exhibition case back with black rotor continuing the stealthy aesthetic. The ALT1-P2 JET takes a classic pilot’s watch into a new age of aviation.

Dubbed the “real-life Iron Man”, Richard Browning is a British inventor and entrepreneur who founded Gravity Industries in 2017, a company which has grown from humble beginnings into a multi-milliondollar organisation with global influence. Browning’s ingenious brainchild, the Gravity Jet Suit, uses several miniature jet engines to achieve vertical flight. The kerosene engines are rated at a combined 144kg of

thrust. Browning and his squad of half a dozen Gravity Team pilots use their arms to control the direction and speed of flight, whilst being shown fuel consumption and other usage data within the headup display they wear inside the helmets.

Browning achieved a speed of 85 miles per hour (135 km/h) with the suit during a Guinness World Records attempt in late 2019 for ‘Fastest speed in a body controlled jet engine powered suit’.

Nick English remarks, “The U2-51/JET has been a huge success since launch and we anticipate this new ALT1-P2/ JET being the next big thing, not least as it’s set to feature in the Venom sequel out later this year, on the wrist of Eddie Brock played by Tom Hardy. Having tried one of these Jet Suits out myself, it’s truly exhilarating, British engineering at its best and then some. Aviation is something that runs through our veins and seeing what would have been considered impossible not so long ago now become a reality is awe-inspiring.”

BREMONT AMBASSADOR JORDAN WYLIE PUTS THE ARGONAUT TO THE TEST DURING RECORD BREAKING SOLO PADDLE BOARD ATTEMPT Bremont Ambassador and former British soldier Jordan Wylie is best known for his remarkable charitable challenges and his latest is no exception. At the time of writing this briefing Jordan was half way through his unprecedented feat of endurance to paddle board 2,000 miles around Great Britain.

The Great British Paddle is an official world record attempt and aims to raise as much money as possible for the Frontline Children charity.

To date, no person has successfully achieved this highly ambitious endeavour, mainly due to the extreme physical and psychological barriers, not to mention the unpredictable British weather!

As a former military man, it was only right for Jordan to wear the Argonaut watch from the Armed Forces Collection which we launched as part of our official partnership with the Ministry of Defence. Jordan stated “To wear a military watch from the MoD approved range is very special to me as a former soldier naturally. What I love about the Argonaut is that as well as it being robust, stylish and with the usual precision timing that we know is a hallmark of Bremont, is what the watch and name stands for. I read recently in Nat Geo that the name Argonaut is associated with brave souls who head to sea for adventures, which was a nice thought indeed. 01. BRITISH ENGINEERING Great Britain has a wonderful history when it comes to watchmaking and has probably been the home to more advances in horology than any other nation. Bremont is determined to play a pivotal role in the reinvigoration of this industry on British shores. Bremont builds many of its own watch components at its state-of-the-art parts manufacturing facility in Ruscombe, near Henley. As a company we verge on the obsessive in the desire to produce watches that are over-engineered for the task in hand. This passion becomes very evident when you hold a Bremont watch.

02. AVIATION AND MILITARY The love and passion for aviation has coursed through the founders' veins from an early age. There has always been a very close association between time and aviation since the first brave adventurers took to the skies over 100 years ago. The love of aviation and its uncompromising demands are inherent in every Bremont watch. Hand-in-hand with Bremont's love of aviation is the company's appreciation of military. Bremont has worked closely with the military for a number of years.

ADVENTURE A key design requisite for the timepieces from the outset was the desire to make beautifully robust and durable watches that were at home both in the workplace and of course in rather more physical environments. The watches continue to be tested to the limits, both in the workshop but also by Bremont’s ambassadors and partners.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH CATHERINE VILLENEUVE, HEAD OF MILITARY, SPECIAL PROJECTS AND ONLINE SALES WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT BREMONT? For over a decade my role has been Head of Bremont Military and Special Projects and in addition, just over a year ago, online sales was incorporated as well.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I am originally from Quebec, Canada and I graduated as a Geomatic Engineer at Laval University, Quebec City. I went on to live in Hawaii and spent my days windsurding for a couple of years before I went Calgary, Canada, to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Customer Service and then the Engineering department. I moved to London, England in early 2000 and my first job was for Nick and Giles’ previous business, Virtue Broadcasting plc, as a Sales Manager, doing live and on-demand, encoding, streaming of corporate AGM and large music concerts. I’ve worked for them since then. The rest as they say, is history… !

WHICH BREMONT DO YOU WEAR AND WHY? I am very lucky that I now own a couple of Bremont watches. Sadly I will never be able to have one of our project watches gracing my wrist, because their ownership is sacrosanct, but today I am wearing my 43mm ALT1-C with a green dial. It is truly a stunning watch, a “vintage” Bremont with the original racing green hue. Green dials are currently all the rage but we created this one 12 years ago!

my day involves a few internal meetings (now on Slack or Zoom) to understand commercials, product promotions for e-commerce, and product design, but the majority of my time currently is spent communicating with our Military and Corporate clients. Creating a special Bremont watch for a military regiment, squadron, unit or the equivalent for a non-military project, is a very lengthy operation with a huge amount of time, effort and passion going into the design process.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING FOR BREMONT AND WHY? Three things; our customers, the Bremont team, and the design process. Over the years and after a few hundred projects, you get to meet some incredibly fascinating people. The clients are from all corners of the globe. They are usually very modest and just a delight to work closely with. Bremont Military and SP customers are truly passionate about watches. Due to their line of work, they have high expectations and it is seen as an heirloom linking to their military heritage, so we know these watches are very special to them.

I am also so incredibly fortunate to have such a truly special team working alongside me. They are all dedicated and passionate about their roles, and this alone allows us to deliver the quality of product expected from us as luxury British watchmaker.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT BREMONT LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? I don’t think there is a typical day at Bremont! I am immensely fortunate to be working with so many interesting clients and each discussion will therefore vary enormously. Obviously, a typical day pre-Covid was a little different to how it is currently. Generally,
