            Film Craft Grand Prix honours pgLang’s ‘transcendent’ work
          ‘WE Cry Together’, a six-minute film from Kendrick Lamar’s entertainment company pgLang, is the winner of the Film Craft category. A powerful and shocking film, it depicts a young couple in an abusive relationship, verbally attacking each other with a hypnotic rhythm and compulsive dialogue that is reminiscent of a Broadway play.
          Jury president Kim Gehrig, director, Somesuch, said: “It’s a brave piece that made us all feel. We wanted the Grand Prix to be transcendent, and of 2023, and this was the entry that achieved that.”
          Gehrig was laser-focused on
          establishing a clear distinction between the Film Craft and Film categories. “The questions I kept asking was how does the film craft make the idea extraordinary? In ‘We Cry Together’, the film craft is faultless. The direction is impeccable, the performances are exceptional, the camera, lighting, production design, editing and so on, all contributed to an inspired production.”
          Four campaigns won eight Gold Lions — including one for ‘We Cry Together’. Apple’s ‘The Greatest’, having already won a Grand Prix, ran the winner close — picking up three Film Craft Gold Lions.

          There were also Golds for Mexico, Japan and a UK/US collaboration.
          AKQA nets Digital Craft prize
          
    THE Digital Craft Grand Prix for 2023 has gone to ‘Never Done Evolving’, an AKQA campaign on behalf of Nike,

          featuring tennis icon Serena Williams.
          Jury president Resh Sidhu, global director of Arcadia Creative Studio, Snap Inc, said: “This was a remarkable year for Digital Craft, with more than 600 entries. The sheer breadth of creativity from around the world was phenomenal.”
          
    AI, machine learning and ChatGPT were prevalent, said Sidhu, “but what we quickly realised is that tech alone is not enough. It needs to be tech with purpose.”
          This was exemplified by the winner, which used AI and
          data analytics to create rich insights into the playing career of Serena Williams. At a PR and marketing level, there have been interesting stunts — such as an AI-generated showdown between Serena at the outset of her career and Serena towards the twilight of her playing days. The campaign was, said Sidhu, “the epitome of digital craft — where the technology was just a tool that helped the final campaign resonate at a human level.”
          There were three Gold Lions, for campaigns from the US, Brazil and a US/UK joint venture.
          THE Design Grand Prix for 2023 has gone to McCann New York and Microsoft for helping the Fulani people of West Africa preserve their traditional language Pulaar. Through a collaboration with the Barry Brothers, they helped create an alphabet ADLaM for the Fulani’s spoken language — which was at risk of dying out.
          Jury president Quinnton Harris, co-founder & CEO, Retrospect, said: “The design in this entry is undeniable. It’s not just an example of design helping preserve a culture, but of design providing a platform for it to TURN TO PAGE 7

          Lions For Music Jury has awarded Grands Prix to two remarkable pieces of work: Apple’s ‘The Greatest’ and Michael Kiwanuka’s ‘Beautiful Life’, entered by Smuggler London and Kiwanuka. Jury president Danielle Hinde, a Lions Grand Prix winner herself and owner/ executive producer of Doomsday Entertainment, said: “Going in, the jury had three criteria — is the work

            FCB slam dunks a sports Grand Prix
          ‘DREAMCASTER’, entered by FCB New York on behalf of Michelob Ultra, is the Entertainment Lions For Sport Grand Prix winner.
          Jury president Rob Doubal, co-president of McCann London and joint chief creative officer of McCann UK, called the decision “unanimous. ‘Dreamcaster’ was just a fan-
          tastic piece of work that was intrinsically inclusive. We didn’t have to debate it much, we all had a sense that it was a powerful piece of work.”
          It tells the story of Cameron Black, a blind man whose ambition was to commentate on a live basketball game.
          Michelob, MSG Networks and the NBA helped him with haptic technology, spatial audio and generative braille. He commentated flawlessly in front of 10.4 million people. The campaign generated a 44% increase in social conversation about Michelob Ultra. Doubal noted the jury looked for growth, truth and entertainment value.
          The jury also awarded three Gold Lions to campaigns from Brazil, Portugal and Mexico.
          ‘CLASH from the Past’, a stunningly imagined piece of work from Wieden + Kennedy (W+K) Portland, has secured two Grands Prix in the Entertainment Track. Having taken the overall Entertainment Lions Grand Prix, the campaign went on to win
          the first-ever Entertainment Lions For Gaming Grand Prix. The campaign was created for Clash of Clans, a 12-year-old game aiming to create a deeper sense of community with players. W+K and its production partners created a fake brand history, imagining that it was actually created in the 1980s. An entire origin narrative was built from scratch, with pretend founders, eraappropriate games and retro merchandise.
          Entertainment Lions jury president Brent Anderson, global chief creative officer of TBWA\Media Arts Lab, said his team was looking for a Grand Prix that “moved us emotionally, created impact and made a difference to the brand or business. One of
          
    
    our biggest takeaways was that ambitious, risky ideas are important.”
          Entertainment Lions for Gaming jury president Francine Li, global head of marketing at Riot Games, called the winning campaign “brave, creative, with all the recognisable nuances of gaming culture”.
          
    
              
              
            
            W+K scores twice with Clash of Clans concept Dentsu’s cross-platform winner ‘rises to the top’
          THE UNANIMOUS choice for Industry Craft Grand Prix was ‘My Japanese Railway’, entered by Dentsu Japan on behalf of JR Group. The sophisticated cross-platform campaign was created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Japan’s railways.
          The idea behind the campaign was to remind Japanese people of how important the rail network is to their way of life. To achieve this it created a series of stamps, collectables, promotions and ad executions to build an emotional connection.
          Jury president Yoshihiro Yagi, executive creative officer Dentsu Japan,
          
    said Industry Craft is “an exciting category that sits at the intersection between business and creativity. It’s where brands can converse with consumers.”
          As for the Grand Prix winner, he said: “I liked the fact that it combined analogue and digital elements to tell a story that is important for an island nation.”
          Jury member Natasha Romariz Maasri, executive creative director, Leo Burnett, MEA added: “This campaign kept rising to the top. It embodied all of the principles we were looking for.”

            Complaining about social media? You could try running an ad on it
          EVERYTHING is different. Nothing has changed. That was the theme addressed by Gary Vaynerchuk at yesterday’s seminar, during which the CEO and co-founder of VaynerMedia made the case that the advertising industry is still catching up with a changing landscape.
          
    
    Social platforms, Vaynerchuk argued, are the stages for consumer attention and should be the number-one objective for marketers. “This device has a lot of attention,” he said, holding up his smartphone. “You can’t get your children off this f**king thing. And the funniest thing is you can’t get yourself off of it.”
          He added: “I’m having conversations this week with people who say social media
          should be regulated because it’s so powerful it’s changing the geo-political nature of the world. And we are talking about that, yet not a peep about creative in social.”
          According to Vaynerchuk, the industry puts the past on a pedestal and there’s much excitement about the future, but not enough focus on what’s happening today. “I don’t know about you — and there may not be many people in Cannes right now who are more excited about AI [than I am] — but if I hear one more f**king person say it this week, I’m going to punch them in the f**king face,” he said. Vaynerchuk said social platforms will mean more creativity and that the industry needs to embrace the word ‘and’ rather than ‘or’.
          “We are not as creative as we can be because we are not making enough creative,” he said. “Brands should really be considering doing 10, 20, 30 ads a day across all social platforms to become more relevant with more
          consumers to actually drive their business.”
          He also believes we must become more consumer-centric: “We say it all day long and yet we’re fully living in boardrooms. There’s a different way to do adver-

          “It’s the creative ambition that we’re setting for all our brands,” Pritchard said in a session on Tuesday in the Lumiere. “Growing markets contributes to broader economic growth and inclusion and that’s good for business and that’s good for society. Growing markets is hard work. It requires resetting the bar across every aspect of creativity.           Pritchard also said that changing people’s habits is
          a way of making a market grow, pointing to a campaign that tried to persuade consumers to “do it every night”.
          The Cascade ad eventually reveals that it’s referring to running the dishwasher every night and aims to get
          a message across about how regular small loads can be more efficient and sustainable than handwashing dishes. The sink uses four gallons every two minutes. According to Energy Star, certified dishwashers use less than four gallons in an entire cycle. “Period protection is another market that has significant growth potential,” Pritchard said. “But it’s often the subject of misinformation and myth. Whisper, Always and Tampax are resetting the bar through creative education that provides product knowledge and growth of the market.”

The latest P&G film, ‘Unbecoming’, tackles the acceptance and beauty of black women’s natural hair — a perfect example of “resetting the creative bar to grow the haircare market by serving all people and each person in countries around the world”.

          GET COMFORTABLE with the uncomfortable. Cede control. Realise you are designing an experience and an interface, not a message. Open up, share creativity and create brands with partners. The more, the better. These were just some of the takeaways from yesterday’s R/GA seminar, which proposed we approach brands as operating systems, with underlying codes of purpose, design and technology, rather than attempting to navigate an increasingly digital world with the equivalent of Stone-Age tools.

          “In a world defined by interfaces and experiences, a brand should be driven by its builders,” Rolfe added. “We need an open-ended design system that allows other people to build on it.”
          Morton agreed: “We’re now building brands with fewer lone geniuses and more partners, who bring different approaches together to create something new. Ultimately, this is about breaking down that familiar false wall between marketing and product expertise.”

        “FREEDOM is the ability to make our own choices and power is the ability to influence the choices of others,” Amanda Gorman said. “So when I think about influence it’s not necessarily that I want to mechanise the choices of other people — but I want to expand the choices they have available.” In a session examining what it means to be an icon representing a brand and a generation, Gorman talked about her rise to fame after reciting her poem The Hill We Climb at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
          “I’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of visibility at a very young age and if I can use that visibility to make sure a light is shed on other people I can’t imagine a more profound use of my time,” she said.
          Joining Gorman on stage were Jane Lauder, executive vice-president, enterprise marketing and chief data officer, and Anna Klein, senior vice-president, global corporate affairs and ESG communications. Lauder said gender equality and equity had been at the forefront of the company for almost 80 years: “It started with my grandmother who was mixing creams in her kitchen. Fast forward to today and when I think about the people who are making our products, our product developers, our researchers, our innovators, we have over 70% of them that identify as women.”
          Gorman said she was drawn to work with Estée Lauder because she wanted to partner with a brand that shared her values and allowed her to use her power to empower others. “Your team really came with such a clean and open slate. A lot of other conversations I had, really kind of wanted me to fit into a cookie cutter traditional spokesperson role,” she said.
          “I want to see a more bright and beautiful diverse range of stories in the world. I want to see more storytellers, more voices and narratives that we have yet to see in history. So I am excited for those truths to be brought to light.”

            Edelman says big brands must do more to include Hispanics
          “CALL us what you want
          — Hispanics, Latinos, Latinx. Labels don’t matter and we won’t cancel you. But what does matter to us is representation, recognition and investment by big brands and media.”
          This is how Hispanic media star Claudia Roma Edelman, founder and CEO of New York-based DEI non-profit foundation We Are All Human, describes her mission at this year’s Cannes Lions. And she will be taking that message on to the conference stage tomorrow, when she hosts Unveiling Hispanic Sentiment Insights for Forward-Looking Industry Strategy.
          
    
    The fact that today’s event is only the second Hispanic seminar in the history of the
          Lions reinforces Edelman’s contention that her demographic has been consistently ignored by the big
          brands. “Hispanics are resilient, proud and united, but we feel disregarded,” Edelman said. “So this is a
          call to brands and media to take action and start prioritising Latinos in their strategies.”
          Quite apart from the issue of exclusion, discounting the US Hispanic market is bad business, she added:

          WHATEVER the prevailing conditions, the weather has the ability to shape our individual lives, world events and ultimately consumer decisions. That’s the message from IBM’s The
          Weather Company.
          “Weather impacts every person on the planet every day,” CMO Randi Stipes told Lions Daily News.
          “The weather impacts the decisions we make con -
          sciously, or more often than not subconsciously. What we buy and how we feel.
          “It can be as simple as influencing what you wear or it can influence your mood. From a marketing standpoint we can leverage those insights to better connect with consumers and ensure the message is resonating at the right time.”
          Stipes focuses on how the weather is altering in a session today, Future Gazers: Mother Nature’s Influence, Liquid Reality and Real Human Connections, Connecting Creativity to Neurodiversity (12.45, on the Terrace stage).
          “When we talk about the influence of mother nature, we need to think about the fact that weather is becoming more erratic,” Stipes said, citing the heatwave that
          the Hispanic market”, the seminar sees the launch of the 2023 Hispanic Sentiment Study, compiled in partnership with We Are All Human, Nielsen and TelevisaUnivision. The panel will also discuss the NFL’s pioneering efforts to embrace inclusivity in their marketing campaigns, notably the Super Bowl ads featuring Mexican flag football star Diana Flores. “Diana will be telling her story, which is very moving,” Edelman said. “She was once asked whether, when she was a child, she ever dreamed she’d be captain of the Mexican team and the star of a Super Bowl ad. She replied that she never had dreams, because she never saw anybody like herself in ads or movies. It was only when she was a teenager and was exposed to role models that she felt she was allowed to have dreams of her own.”

          “We are exhibiting the weather’s influence on catalytic cultural and historical moments over time,” Stipes said. “This is a festival of creativity so we have enlisted artists from around the globe to use generative AI to reimagine what those moments would look like had there been a different weather condition.”
          The Battle of Waterloo is one of the events featured at the gallery. “It was a muddied battlefield, so we’re imagining what if the conditions had been different? What if Napoleon had known the forecast? Might he have been victorious at Waterloo?”

          Hart said it was important to enjoy the trust of brands that allow him to pitch and develop campaigns that “embed funny” into products from the likes of AT&T and sport betting company Draftkings.
          Speaking with Jeffrey Katzenberg, entertainment industry executive, DreamWorks co-founder and founding partner at WndrCo, Hart said that “people love to laugh” and resonate with “comedy and colour.”
          Hartbeat campaigns also reflect Hart’s authentic persona. “I wake up funny,” he said. “I am not a gimmick.”
          KEVIN Hart built his fame as a livewire comedian and actor, but the founder and chairman of the Hartbeat entertainment studio and marketing consultancy also helps brands add value by becoming funny.
          
    Announced as the Entertainment Person of the Year
          2023 by the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Hart spoke at the Debussy on Tuesday about his ability to fuse comedy with marketing and business through “seamless” brand partnerships. Working across film, TV, radio, podcasts and more, Hartbeat has created a “media ecosystem” through which brands can grow, he said.

            Women’s sport is good for business
          WHY DO women’s sports receive less than 1% of sponsorship investments and less than 10% of media coverage compared to men’s sports?
          
    That’s a question tackled by The Formula for Real Change: A Focus on Women’s Sports, hosted by Rita Ferro, president, Disney Advertising, and featuring the legendary basketball player Dawn Staley.
          
    Ferro started with some thought-provoking statistics: Today, girl’s participation in US high school sports is nearly 12 times higher than it was in 1972 but it is still nowhere near the figure for male sports. By the age of 14 girls drop out of sports at twice the rate of boys, “Disney has made a commitment to inclusive storytelling as a business imperative to
          make sure that we are amplifying and being bullish on women’s sports,” Ferro said. ESPN has 33,000 hours of women’s sports across the platform.
          The NCAA women’s basketball tournament this year saw a 53% growth in revenue, year-on-year, and it was the highest rated NCAA women’s final in history.
          “And across women’s sports our revenue is up 23% which means it’s good for business. When brands come in it pays off for them,” she said. One of the early pioneers of professional basketball for women was Dawn Staley, a three-times Olympic Gold medalist, and now a top coach, currently at the University of Carolina.
          Joining Ferro on the Debussy stage, Staley talked about her
          rise from humble beginnings in the Philadelphia projects to sporting stardom.
          “I’m the youngest of five so everything in our household was competitive. We had one bathroom and seven people so you had to be able to be fast to get in there. I was a lot different to most girls my age. I was super, super competitive and I needed an outlet so I chose sports,” she said.
          Staley is now the highest paid coach in women’s college basketball having signed a seven-year contract in 2021 for $22.4m.
          “I do think we’re moving in the right direction. We are in a position where we are in high demand — we just need people to continue to embrace our sports because the future is incredibly bright,” Staley said.

A premier learning programme for senior marketers, the CMO Acceler-
          ator offers full week access to the Festival, as well as a customised two-day programme that equips marketing leaders with a strategy to deliver sustainable and enduring brand value for their organisations. Since 2013, over 325 alumni from 50 countries have attended.
          Not to be overlooked are the Young Lions competitions, which are at the heart of the Cannes Lions School.
