Gesinne verloor alles in brand NICOLE MCCAIN
“Ek was so geskok gewees. Ds.

Foster mother to 80 children NICOLE MCCAIN When Bubbles Strangman took in her first foster child in 2000, no one could have predicted that it would turn into over a decade of keeping vulnerable and neglected children safe and loved at Immanuel’s Haven.
“After I took in my first foster child, I realised I would like to have a home for children at risk. I realised there were so many more children that needed a place of safety.” Bubbles began building what is today a home for six foster children with her husband George, as well as a crèche and primary school for children with learning difficulties, on their plot in Firlands outside Gordon’s Bay. Despite raising two of her own children, Bubbles has been a foster mother to almost 80 children since 2002. The couple is now applying to have a registered youth centre and intends building a home to house over 30 children, many of them under the age of three. “It’s difficult when you know the children are leaving, but you just have to give them love,” says Bubbles. “I’ve never wanted this to be an institution. I want it to be like a home, even if there are many children.” In this she has been successful, if the many little voices calling “Ma!” at all times of the day are anything to go by. And the children give her husband of nine years, “Papa” George, as much affection. “He’s a good husband, and the children love him. I’m the strict one. The children wrap him around their fingers,” laughs Bubbles. However, there have been challenges in taking in so many children. “The funding is always difficult,” admits Bubbles. Although they have some overseas sponsors, the foster parents can never be sure when they will get a local donation or for what amount. Bubbles says the biggest difficulty is seeing children come to them neglected or abused. “At first, we cried for the children. But now we pray. We pray for every single child.” This faith is what has held the couple steadfast in their dedication, and if you ask Bubbles why she opens her doors and her heart to so many children, the simple answer will be: “God told me I must do it.”
Bubbles Strangman supervises as some of the children at her crèche play.
Strand Pioneers want to honour oldtime heroes at banquet Strand Pioneers RFC will be hosting a banquet to honour rugby legends, many of whom did not receive Springbok colours because they refused to play for the team during the apartheid era. Police shoot axewielding man A 36-year-old Sir Lowry’s Pass man, who suffers from a mental condition, is in hospital after police shot him during a domestic violence call-out. On Sunday 31 March Somerset West police were called out to tend to a complaint about a man who was allegedly chasing children with an axe, says Somerset West police spokesperson Suzan Jantjies. “Upon arrival police found the man in possession of an axe and a knife. The man came running towards the police. The police officers realised that the man’s intention was to hit him with the axe.” Police officers fired a warning shot, says
Macassar Village residents protested to express frustration with a lack of schools in the area.
Macassar: lack of schools frustrates NICOLE MCCAIN Macassar Village residents protested on Sunday 31 March to express what community leaders claim is frustration at not being heard. The frustration stems from the community’s request for a new school in the area, says community leader Christiaan Steward. He says many pupils living in Macassar Village walk almost 1,5 km to attend primary schools in Macassar and Faure, and there is also the need for a crèche. The Gazette reported last month that community members had begun a crèche for 85 pupils, but was forced to take down an illegal structure erected to provide shade for the pupils as they did not follow the correct planning process with the City of Cape Town. “We are still looking for a structure, or someone who can help us,” says Stewart. “The children are having class under the sun. The community is frustrated.” A Social Development spokesperson says
the correct procedure to follow in establishing a crèche is to contact one of the department’s social workers, who will guide the registration process. The community also protested in May last year, which sparked discussions with the Western Cape Education Department. Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for Western Cape MEC of Education Donald Grant, says the department’s officials set up a meeting with the community leadership last month to discuss their request for a primary school. “Only four parents arrived at the meeting. We listened to their concerns, but reiterated that the Western Cape Education Department needs to have a broader representation of the community to discuss their concerns and requests. The leadership has yet to contact us with regards to a follow-up meeting.” Casey says that in the interim, the department is investigating the need for and feasibility of a school in the area. She also added that currently all pupils can be accommodated at the schools in the greater Macassar area.
Jantjies, and when the man did not desist the police fired at him. According to witnesses he was shot four times in the arms and legs. Jantjies says the police were unaware of the suspect’s mental condition. Family members of the suspect, who is being investigated for attempted murder, say they are unsure of what led to the incident. He is in Tygerberg Hospital. “He is in a lot of pain, and may need an operation, but we have been able to visit him with police permission,” says his sister. The two police officers involved in the incident are also being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Hennie Swart, by 021 857 7100 bel.

law, will address the meeting. Also invited are the local Community Police Forum (CPF), the newly established Liquor Traders Forum, the Chamber of Commerce and local neighbourhood watches. The meeting will take place at the Somerset West Library on 14 May at 18:30.

The Simanyene High School pupil has achieved his South African colours for pool, after taking up the game as a sport only two years ago. “Two years ago I came with a friend to the youth development centre, and that’s when I decided to play pool seriously,” says the young sportsman. “It’s all due to coach Elias Nomakhakhaya, who’s always supportive and encouraging.” The game has had a positive influence on his life, says Lephallo. “Pool keeps me healthy. It keeps me away from bad things and off the streets. There are many good things about it. You get to travel and make good friends.” However, it has not been an easy journey. Lephallo doesn’t have money to attend many competitions, which are often as far away as Mpumalanga or the North West province. For Lephallo, the South African championships are only the beginning. “I hope the sport takes me overseas. I would like to visit Australia. It’s always been a dream to visit there.” For more information, contact Elias Nomakhakhaya on 072 048 7911 or 082 728 6829.
