Con man hits locals hard TAMSYN JANTJIES Recently a man believed to be in his late 50s sweet-talked a few local business people. A DistrictMail reader, Linda McInulty explains: “The elderly gentleman was referred to me by an estate agent I had dealt with previously. He came by way of making an appointment as he wanted to buy a car for his son. We had our consultation where I showed him the cars on offer and we proceeded to fill in the necessary forms. It was then when he started talking about things happening in his life. He started out by telling me that his father had recently passed away and that he inherited a farm in Calvinia. At that point he started thanking me for my services and said that I am a very friendly lady and that he would like to give me a lamb. I said to him that it really was not necessary as I was just doing my job, but he insisted and even asked me how I would prefer the lamb to be cut up. He also explained to me that the church

Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mcebisi Skwatsha visited Lwandle last Wednesday. His visit comes weeks after xenophobic violence claimed the lives of seven people, including three South Africans, in Durban and Gauteng. Skwatsha urged the about 600 residents at the meeting to be tolerant of fellow Africans, reminding them of the propitiatory spirit in which South Africans were welcomed in countries like Somalia during Apartheid. Last Sunday eight Malawian men were assaulted in their home after a group of men broke into their home in Lwandle while they were sleeping. The men have been taken to a place of safety after the assault. Here Skwatsha is seen with local Ward 85 councillor Samuel Matha.

where he was to be ordained as a priest that weekend was selling canned goods and donating the proceeds to charity. Upon which he asked me if I would like to buy some of the goods. After a minute’s hesitation I gave him a R200.” Linda says during the entire encounter she had a little uneasy feeling about this gentleman but she couldn’t put her finger on it because, as she said, “he has a friendly, open face.” After she had finished filling the forms he said that he needed to see a financial advisor and she pointed him towards one. “I waited and waited for this man to transfer the deposit so that I could order his car but did not receive anything. It wasn’t until the financial advisor paid a visit that he said the man spun him the same story and that he gave him R500 to cover the lamb as well, that we realised we had been taken for a ride,” she explains. Linda says that there are other business people that also got bamboozled out of their money by this man and would like people in the Helderberg to be careful of him and to be vigilant when people ask for donations.

What is your opinion on public holidays Quite a few public holidays are ahead and Helderberg Gazette found out what these days mean to readers.

Amanda Pieters thinks that public holidays are a necessity. “All the public holidays have meanings attached to them so I am of the opinion that it is important to celebrate those days.”

Uzair Isaacs suggests that the day Nelson Mandela passed away should be declared a national public holiday. He adds, “public holidays are great for us as employees but not for business owners, as the work stands still.”

Riaad Gordon says “I think these holidays are important. It is a way for us to remember and celebrate our heritage.”

Antoinette Marais is a business owner and says “personally, I like it as I get to spend more time with my husband. On the other hand public holidays are good for my business as Ii get more customers who can’t make it during the working week.”

Nasheema Hendricks sê dat mense wat op publieke vakansiedae werk, reg betaal moet word want “daar is baie mense wat werk op vakansiedae wat nie reg betaal word nie. ”

OTTERY

Safwaan Lakay’s opinion is that public holidays are needed. “We can’t work all the time. Sometimes we all need a little break from our day to day schedules. With that said though, I think we should not have too many public holidays either because then all of us suffer from a backlog of work that needs to get done in a hurry,” he explains.

Incident reports from Neighbourhood Watch Just before midnight on Wednesday, a resident heard noises in his yard, looked out and saw a young man. The resident called the security provider that despatched an officer. The Somerset West resident then put out an alert on his Neighbourhood Watch Whats-App to others in his area who responded immediately to assist.

Additionally a Neighbourhood Watch patrol was in the area who made their way to the property. The trespasser, in possession of a number of bags, had jumped over into a neighbouring property but was cornered and identified. Somerset West police arrested the trespasser.

City to honour former president Nelson Mandela In line with the City of Cape Town’s commitment to redress, reconciliation and honouring the heroes and leaders of the past, City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, will unveil a sculpture of former president Nelson Mandela on Freedom Day, Monday 27 February.

The artwork will be unveiled at the City Hall at 09:45, where Mandela made his first speech upon his release from prison. The City of Cape Town believes that this sculpture is a fitting tribute as South Africans celebrate their freedom and honour the father of the nation.

Smoked haddock and sweetcorn chowder

A delicious and creamy soup to keep the winter chills away. Ingredients: 500 g smoked haddock 2 cup milk 45 g butter 3 tbs cake flour 1 cup cream 3 bay leaves 3 potatoes, peeled and diced 250 g diced bacon (optional) 1 bunch leeks, finely chopped 250 g frozen sweet corn 15 ml fresh dill, chopped pinch of grated nutmeg salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Method: Place haddock in a saucepan and add the milk, plus 600 ml water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes.

Remove from heat, cover the pan and let stand for 15 minutes. Drain haddock and reserve 1 litre of liquid. Remove the skin from the haddock and break into flakes. In a saucepan, melt the butter and add flour to form a roux (paste). Gradually add reserved haddock liquid, while whisking continuously. Bring the sauce to the boil, then stir in cream and bay leaves. Add diced potatoes and simmer gently for 1015 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and sauté the bacon until crispy. Add the leeks and sauté until soft. Add the sweetcorn and heat until cooked through. Fold the haddock, bacon, vegetables, dill and nutmeg into soup. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve immediately, discarding bay leaves. – Food24

isphere vaccine. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness which can cause mild to severe illness. It can also make chronic health problems worse or lead to pneumonia, for example, which in turn could lead to death. People have said that in the past even after vaccination they still had influenza and choose not to get vaccinated again. Dr Holgate said the reason for this is because they may be infected with a strain not included in the vaccine. The vaccine is usually a preparation against the three most probable strains of the virus. These are an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus, an A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like virus and A B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus. Pregnant women, irrespective of the stage of pregnancy, should get vaccinated as well as women still within two weeks after delivery. A recent trial conducted proved the safety of the vaccine for pregnant women. Dr Holgate said pregnant women are at high risk for influenza. Dr Holgate said health care workers must also have the vaccination. “Health care workers may be more exposed to viruses. It is vital they ensure their own health by staying healthy, washing their hands and using appropriate barrier protection. It is important to note that influenza is different from a cold and people usually develop influenza suddenly. Symptoms include fever; headaches; cough; runny or blocked nose; body aches; and tiredness. ER24’s Emergency Contact Centre can be reached 24 hours a day on 084 124.

A homemade water buoy is handy.

How a milk bottle can save a life An empty three-litre milk container can quickly and effectively be turned into an effective lifesaving rescue buoy.

This idea has been implemented by the National Sea Rescue’s Water Wise Academy who has already placed several of these buoys at strategic spots in the Ceres area. Here’s how to do it: Once the bottle is empty and dry, use red spray paint to paint the inside and outside of the bottle. Put a handful of sand inside the bottle to give it enough weight, so that it can be thrown some distance. Then glue the lid shut with silicone glue. Source a pole of roughly 1,5 m in length, with a diameter of 20 cm, and secure it into the

ground near the swimming area – with permission of the landowner. Tie a 10 m length of rope to the bottle handle and coil it neatly. Next, tie a piece of string in a loop to hold the coiled rope. Cut a groove in the top of the pole and slip the string through it to secure it to the top of the pole. Drill a hole about 10 cm from the top of the pole to thread the other end of the rope through. Tie an overhand knot to keep the rope attached to the pole. Make a laminated label reading “emergency number: 10177” or put the sign in a plastic sleeve. Tack it to the pole with a drawing pin. Download the Sea Rescue label from http://goo.gl/FvsDYs. – NRSRI Sea Rescue Magazine: Autumn 2015

Clampdown on illegal dumpers, landowners Altogether 306 fines, totalling R313 712, have been issued for littering and illegal dumping since the beginning of the year. Of these, 186 fines were issued in a week-long blitz by the City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Bylaw Enforcement Unit, City Health and Traffic Services last month. The crackdown, comprising awareness and enforcement, started in January. During one week each month, the teams intensify their focus on identifying of-

fenders and issuing fines. Regular patrols and monitoring of dumping hotspots and public places across the city are conducted. Action is also taken against landowners where illegally dumped material has accumulated on their properties. Annually R350m is spent to clear illegal dumping across the city. Illegal dumping of waste and littering also affects environmental health. Illegal dumping can be reported to the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.

Remember to pay Tekkie tax It’s that time of the year again when you can kick off your high heels, school shoes or boots and swap them for your comfy pair of tackies (we all know you want to). The best part – it is all for a good cause. How, you ask? Friday 29 May is Tekkie Tax Day! Get your R10 sticker (that is the tax you pay) and wear your tackies. Maybe just wash them before you wear them. If you don’t have time, you can get a pair of funky shoelaces called “tekkie tags”. This way you won’t be ashamed because you can’t tell the colour of your tackies anymore. You can get the stickers and “tekkie tags” from any of the participating welfare organisations or you can order what you need directly from their website. Stickers will be sold at the Helderberg Child Welfare’s offices and at Toys “R” Us stores.

Alternative smoking devices The City of Cape Town will escalate its efforts this year for legislative clarity on the wide array of ‘alternative’ smoking devices and habits that have become commonplace in South Africa. Earlier this year, City Health solicited legal opinion from the National Department of Health about the use of e-cigarettes. This continues to be a grey area, not only in South Africa but around the globe, and is currently not provided for in the Tobacco Control Amendment Act. Ongoing research into hookah pipes (or ‘hubbly bubblies’ as the devices are commonly known) indicates that they are decidedly more dangerous than societal attitudes suggest. The most recent study in the United States of America found that 39% of teens and young adults who had previously smoked hookah pipes went on to smoke cigarettes. “Hookah pipes are very popular in Cape Town, not just among adults, but also children because there is a perception that the flavoured tobacco is somehow not harmful. Tobacco is tobacco, no matter what the flavour. We need to be more mindful as a society about the burden we’re placing on the health care system. In the Cape especially, we have very high levels of TB and other respiratory diseases and so we need to make every effort to combat those, including prevention through responsible personal choices,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee member for Health, Benedicta van Minnen. City Health has met with researchers from both the University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape. The consensus is that while the research is not definitive, smoking hookah pipes is harmful to the health of an individual. The researchers are also in agreement that nicotine remains one of the most addictive substances, especially for young people. “I will be raising the issue with the National Health Minister to push for legal clarity on the use of hookah pipes and e-cigarettes sooner rather than later. I am not necessarily pushing for a ban on the devices, because to be fair there is not definitive proof of their impact, but we do need to close the legislative vacuum where these devices are concerned,” added Councillor Van Minnen.

Beware of head and spine injuries in contact sport Be it a passion to stay fit or just for recreational purposes, sportspeople always need to ensure measures are in place to reduce the risk of sustaining injuries.

Injuries are often sustained while participating in sport, especially contact sport. Various programmes have been established to reduce injuries, especially in South African rugby. The BokSmart National Rugby Safety programme was officially launched in 2009. The programme promotes safety in schools and clubs, including free mandatory coach and referee education on related techniques and strategies around injury prevention and management. BokSmart also develops regulations, minimum standards and policies to protect rugby

players within the context of the game. Dr Wayne Viljoen, BokSmart manager at the South African Rugby Union, said there has been a decrease in serious head, neck and spine injuries at clubs and schools since the establishment of BokSmart. Some aspects which contributed to the decrease include coaching, refereeing, player preparation, education and awareness. Coaches, referees and medical staff on duty at matches and practices have contributed to the decrease by implementing correct injury prevention and management strategies. The BokSmart Spineline, linked to ER24 medical services, is a dedicated emergency helpline for potentially serious concussion, head, neck and spine injuries sustained during a rugby match or practice. Signs and symptoms:

Viljoen said all head injuries should be approached and handled as a potential neck injury until proven otherwise. “Do not roll an unconscious player over without first stabilising the neck. If a player complains about substantial neck pain, he should be managed strictly according to cervical spine injury protocols and be stabilised and removed from the field on a spinal board,” he said. What you need to look for: A player who has a dazed, vacant or blank expression. A player who is lying motionless on the ground, gets up very slowly, is unsteady on the feet, has balance problems or falls over, suffers loss of consciousness or has a lack of responsiveness. Confusion, grabbing or clutching of the head.

SURPRISE VISIT: Former South African Olympic sprinter, Geraldine Pillay (wearing a blue tracksuit top and black pants), who grew up in Macassar, surprised the women at the Macassar Fit and Fun exercise class for women when she attended the class last week. Pillay said she was pleasantly surprised to see so many women attending the class and praised the women who attended classes regularly. She also encouraged them to continue doing so and led the women in a short exercise class. After her short stint leading the women, their usual Fit and Fun instructor, Japie Constable, took over and Geraldine joined the women in the exercise class. The Macassar Fit and Fun women train at Macassar Sports Grounds, from Monday to Thursday, from 18:00 to 19:00. Women of all ages are invited to attend the classes, free of charge.
