Bottles prevent disease Water is a scarce resource and for many South Africans practising cleanliness is a luxury, especially when there is limited access to clean running water. Peninsula Beverage Company (PenBev), in partnership with The City of Cape Town, has helped combat the risk of illness as a result of the lack of sanitation. PenBev is the local bottler and distributor of The Coca-Cola Company products in the Western Cape. They have been donating 2 litre plastic bottles to crèches in the Western Cape which have been transformed into mobile hand-wash units. They can be squeezed to let water pour out from a long tube, giving communities access to clean water and creating hygiene aware-

ness. Corporate Communications Manager Denise Green comments: “Diarrhoea as a result of the lack of hygiene is a worrying issue in local communities and settlements. “We are thrilled we are able to help by donating the bottles which are used to educate communities about the importance of keeping their hands clean, which in turn helps prevent the spread of diseases. “This initiative forms part of PenBev’s ‘me (people), we (community), world (environment)’ strategy, which serves the communities in which we operate and who have supported us over many years.” For more information about Peninsula Beverages and the bottle campaign, visit their website at www.penbev.co.za.

Paarl Bel-Cantokoor vier feesjaar Gebeur wonderwerke nog?

My naam is Maransie. Ek bly in Wellington. Hulle wou my bene laat afsit. So een van die mediese dokters het my verwys na “Dr” Mutuba (Kruie Dokter) agter Shoprite in Wellington. So toe gaan ek soontoe. My kontak nommer: 078 229 9899

Vir meer inligting, bel David Samaai by 021 862 1917.

News - Nuus

Constitutional court rules over DA SADTU (South African Democratic Teachers Union) Western Cape is ecstatic that the Constitutional Court has dismissed Education Minister of Education Donald Grant’s leave to appeal against the decision of the High Court to have the 27 schools which the department wanted to close down, remain open, pending the review of each school by the Court. This is huge victory for the 27 schools and SADTU who were respondents. SADTU regards this also as a severe blow to the national minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga who opposed the application by SADTU and the 27 schools which was heard

in the High Court in December last year. Grant, in his Constitutional Court application, wanted to claim costs from SADTU, and they don’t know how he will explain to premier Zille and the tax payers that he has wasted their money. They are livid because this money could have been used to provide infrastructure to schools, more books, libraries, computer labs and reduce class sizes in poor working class communities. They hope the premier’s eyes will open and she will relieve Grant’s action to close the schools in the Western Cape. This is a huge victory for poor schools and members of SADTU in the country.

The Ordinary People hip-hop sessions what I see around me on a daily basis,” says Siyabulela Bhali. The CD is sold for R50 and is available on order. Ordinary People hip-hop sessions, hosted by Mfanekiso, takes place on a monthly basis in an open-air space called “eStoepini” in Mbekweni. A group of Mbekweni Youth (between ages of 16-35) meet on a monthly basis and showcase their talent through the form of hip-hop, poetry, street dance and comedy. The hip-hop sessions have been going for just more than 10 years now. This is one of the few and most popular platforms that takes the Mbekweni youth away from crime-driven activities and centralizes them into one place where they are not being judged by the community and where they can voice their views without being censored. Their main challenge is, unfortunately, lack of sponsorship and support from surrounding businesses and government institutions. For more information on the hip-hop sessions, sponsorship and how you can get hold of Maica please contact his manager and event organizer, Mfanekiso @0784682074 or send an email to mfanekiso@gmail.com.

MAICA (Mpumelelo Melathi) was discovered by his fellow crew mate and producer, Mfanekiso (Siyabulela Njomane), back in 2004 in a show that Mfanekiso organized. He has performed around the Western Cape and in 2006, together with his group “Original Accents”, he was selected to perform in the popular hip-hop theatre show Hip-Hop Connected at Artscape in Cape Town. MAICA is one of the talented rappers in Mbekweni and Paarl in general. He was also featured in a Music from the Cape Winelands compilation CD that was sold all over the world. He also featured in the Isiqalo compilation CD that was released in 2006. Maica also featured in a Belgian produced documentary that focused on life in the township. The documentary was released in Belgium and broadcasted on their national TV. On 30 April he will launch his 10-track CD, Saphola, which is Xhosa for “We’ve been watching”. “I talk about a variety of things; the social illnesses in and around Mbekweni, love, hip-hop and having fun and I also talk a lot about myself on this CD, my personal struggles as a young man growing up in the streets of Mbekweni and

Ernest November by 021 877 5900 te bel.

Method: Whisk the marinade ingredients together. Thinly slice the chicken breasts and marinade for about 15 minutes. Heat the oil in a fairly large pan and stir-fry the cooked rice until toasty and lightly browned. Remove from the heat. Pour the marinade off the chicken. Stiry fry the chicken strips until just browned. Add the garlic and ginger and stir-fry for a few seconds until fragrant. Add the onion, red pepper and sugar peas and stir-fry until the red pepper starts to soften. Add the sweetcorn and rice and stirfry until hot. Add the seasoning, stir and heat through. Season with salt and black pepper if required and serve immediately.

(23 October - 23 November)

At this time you put extra energy into thinking about and organizing your work and professional life. Decisions you make at this time are likely to work out well, as you are clear and objective. Gathering information regarding your career or long-range goals is also favored.

SINCERE COMPASSION: Drakenstein Municipality in association with Drakenstein prison changed the life of the 15-year-old physical disabled Marlon Fransman by donating a wheelchair and bed to him. The wheelchair and bed are custom-made for Marlin’s body and needs. Marlin no longer has parents and his aunt Sophie is now his guardian and takes care of him. The donation was made possible with the good intentions of Paarl FNB, Paarl Business Chamber, Drakenstein Municipality Ward 10 ward project funds, Shonaquip, Monté Christo Miglat and Spilo. Here with Marlon are (rear from left) Drakenstein Prison Area commissioner Jeremy Mattyse, portfolio holder for social services Noël Adams, Sophie de Vries (Marlon’s guardian), Francis Nieuwoudt (Paarl Business Chamber) and a family member.

You are also more perceptive than usual. *AFRIKAANS - DAAGLIKSE STERRE: Ram: 083 9140 010, Bul: 083 9140 011, Tweeling: 083 9140 012, Kreef: 083 9140 013, Leeu: 083 9140 014, Maagd: 083 9140 015, Weegskaal: 083 9140 016, Skerpioen: 083 9140 017, Boogskutter: 083 9140 018, Steenbok: 083 9140 019, Waterdraer: 083 9140 020, Vis: 083 9140 021

Education incentive to raise literacy causes mixed reaction NICOLE MCCAIN The Western Cape Education Department has allocated 30 million rand to fund a cash incentive programme as a reward system for schools that improve their literacy rates. However, the announcement has received a mixed response from schools. According to Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for the MEC of Education, Donald Grant, “the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) aims to improve language and mathematics outcomes in all schools in the province. “To further this aim, the WCED will be allocating R30 million to the incentive programme during the course of the next financial year to schools that improve their literacy and numeracy performance”. Casey says the incentives are to show appreciation for schools and teachers which have performed well. “We also want to incentivize other schools to improve their results in order to receive the cash rewards.” The funds received through the reward programme must be distributed back into the schools, and are earmarked for extra reading materials, equipment in classrooms or new technology, according to Casey. According to Casey, the criteria for the 2013 rewards has yet to be set, but will be based on the 2013 WCED language and maths testing for Grade 3, 6 and 9. This has also raised some concerns for local principals. However, Casey says the criteria will be set in such a way that ensures that schools that improve on their results are also rewarded. “It will not be just for schools with the best results. Therefore, schools that have not achieved good results in the past have greater opportunities for improvement than a school that has been excelling at a high level already.” Principal Henry Schemper of Huguenot Primary says if any form of reward is considered, it should happen over a period of at least three years. “Rather reward consistent growth over a period than a flash in the pan performance that is not sustained. Schools should also be categorised according to the areas that they serve. “For some schools to achieve a high pass rate is the expectation while for some schools to reach a 50% pass rate is an achievement.

“Stop playing the statistics game and focus the energy where it is needed,” says Schemper. The WCED is invested in helping school improve their literacy despite a lack of resources, according to Casey. The WCED has a language and mathematics strategy in place and each school’s language and mathematics strategy has been adapted and improved taking into account where weaknesses of their learners lie in the 2012 testing. In addition, the WCED has over the last two years provided millions of textbooks and classroom readers to schools, says Casey.

Aansoekvorms is beskikbaar by www.sun.ac.za/science.

Let’s zoop it up for the hungry There’s nothing better on a winter’s day than a bowl of delicious hot soup. And there’s nothing better than doing some good at the same time. Buy any Denny soup and, on National Soup Day, 31 May, you will help FoodBank South Africa feed thousands of hungry people. Denny, South Africa’s premier ready-to-eat soup range, is once again championing National Soup Day in a bid to ensure that people living in our poorest communities may also enjoy a good hot meal when they need it most. Denny will donate 40c worth of soup for each Denny Soup sold between April and August to FoodBank SA, a non-profit organisation and the country’s only food banking network that secures quality food for the hungry, helping to alleviate hunger and malnutrition in South Africa. Currently, there are about 11 million people in South Africa who do not know where their next meal will come from and one in five children under the age of nine suffers from stunted growth as a result of malnutrition. FoodBank South Africa distributes food to more than 1 000 NGO’s through-

out the country, ensuring that the donated food reaches the families and children who need it most. The National Soup Day campaign aims to give consumers an easy way of feeding the hungry during the coldest months of the year. By purchasing a Denny Soup throughout the month of April as well as on National Soup Day itself, not only will you be stocking your own cupboard with some hearty goodness, but you’ll also be sharing the love with your fellow South Africans. Denny’s managing director, Ron Hoskin says: “Denny guarantees a minimum donation of R200 000 worth of soup to FoodBank South Africa although this year we hope to beat last year’s figure of R300 000. In advance, we thank all our consumers for coming on board with this initiative.” For more information on National Soup Day and how the fund-raising is going, as well some exciting competitions, visit www.nationalsoupday.co.za and join us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter. Villagers verniel Bloues
