Be wise with your money After the festive season, many people end up paying high debt in the coming months, often resulting in them to have to take out loans. Credit Ombudsman, Manie van Schalkwyk urges consumers to make sure they understand the true costs of borrowing and payment conditions. As a rule of thumb you shouldn’t borrow more than 35 percent of your income or you could run into trouble on your repayments. “You can end up paying many more times what you borrowed in interest alone. “Interest rates differ for long-term debt, such as home loans, and short-term debt, such as credit and store cards.” “Borrow as little as possible,” he advises. Van Schalkwyk says consumers should investigate debt consolidation offers from banks thoroughly. Under the National Credit Act (NCA), it’s your right as a consumer to be given a pre-agreement statement and quotation when seeking credit, he says. These will outline the terms and conditions of the proposed agreement and all costs involved such as cost of credit, interest, service fees, initiation fees, credit insurance, deposit required, number of instalments, date of first instalment and last instalment. “You must know what is expected of you prior to signing the credit agreement,” says Van Schalkwyk. Be aware of exactly how much it will cost you and for how long you will be paying off on the loan. If you don’t understand something, take your time and ask for assistance. The loan agreement should also contain all other charges that will be added. “Only borrow from a reputable credit provider otherwise you will have no recourse if things go wrong later on.” Another key factor in the borrowing process is ensuring that the credit provider has all the necessary information for the affordability assessment. These are undertaken to ensure that you do not borrow more than you can afford and become overindebted. “If you become over-indebted and cannot repay your debt, credit providers can attach your assets, such as your home or car, or deduct the money directly from your salary,” says Van Schalkwyk. He explains that if you do find yourself running behind on your repayments, contact your credit provider as soon as possible before the account is hand-

ed over for collection and legal action. They may be willing to negotiate a payment holiday or reduce your instalments. “The quicker you seek out help, the quicker you will be able to get out of debt,” says Van Schalkwyk. Tips for borrowing wisely: ) Budget What’s the difference between how much income your family earns and what your total expenses are each month? Will you be able to pay for your debt once you’ve covered all your expenses? What if interest rates go up, how much more will you be paying? You should also plan for unexpected costs, such as if you are in an accident or one of your family members is retrenched. ) Borrow as little as possible As a rule of thumb you shouldn’t borrow more than 35% of your income or you could run into trouble on your repayments. Put aside at least 15% of your income every month in a safe investment for your retirement. ) Honesty is the best policy Disclose all the information required to your credit provider, particularly for the affordability assessment. If you’re dishonest, you could lose the protection offered by the NCA against reckless lending. ) Pay on time, every time Paying late will adversely affect your credit rating and possibly your ability to take out credit in the future. If you think you cannot meet your monthly instalments, call your credit provider immediately and try to re-arrange payments. Do not wait until you skip payments. ) Home loan comes first Pay your home loan first. ) Check your credit report regularly This way you’ll be able to identify any errors and correct them. Under the NCA a credit bureau must provide you with one free copy of your credit report each year from each of the 11 registered bureaus. Additional copies cost between R20 and R30, excluding VAT. The office of the Credit Ombud enforces fairness in credit, credit bureaux and debt counselling matters and can be contacted on 0861 662 837 or click here for more information. Source: Fin24

While electronic transactions are on the rise, many of us still regularly go to the ATM to withdraw cash for smaller transactions. It’s a routine that many take for granted and that’s what fraudsters prey on. Bank authorities are thus warning the public to take special care when using ATMs. Fraudsters will use any opportunity to commit crimes, from looking over your shoulder to elaborate set-ups such as installing a CCTV and skimmer on an ATM machine to steal information about your bank or credit card. By stealing your card information, it will enable them to potentially create fake credit cards for fraudulent spending – all on your account Banks are working around the clock to ensure that your card transactions are protected worldwide but you can still take simple steps to ensure that you do not become a victim of this crime. To help stop retail/ATM fraud, remember: ) review receipts before you sign, ) monitor your statements, ) sign up for email/text “transaction alerts” from your bank,

for 18 January 2013 CAPRICORN

(22 December - 21 January)

You are more distressed than usual over any dissonance in your environment or personal relationships, and you are inclined to avoid serious discussions or real disagreements with others. Also, challenging mental work and concentration is difficult for you now.

AQUARIUS

(21 January - 20 February)

This is a time of considerable frustration and your desires or efforts appear to be thwarted or at least delayed. Relationships with men and people in authority may be particularly uncomfortable. Also, you have more self-doubt than usual; your mood is somber and rather self-critical.

PISCES

(20 February - 21 March)

Though you are unusually energetic, it is hard for you to get anything done. You tend to fly off the handle and to scatter your forces. You are happiest now when you do something creative and daring, and that doesn't require cooperating or conforming to others' wishes and needs.

ARIES

(21 March - 21 April)

This is a good time for solitude, quiet, or contemplative activities and rest. Your spirits may be temporarily depressed, so take some time for yourself. Others may criticize you or show little emotional warmth at this time. Emotional well-being and contentment characterize this time period. You feel quite relaxed and carefree, and this would be a splendid time for a vacation.

TAURUS

Recipes

(21 April - 21 May)

You feel quite amorous and affectionate now and will very much want to share this time with someone you love or at least with congenial company. Your creative or artistic inclinations are also stimulated, and your work in these areas will be especially satisfying and successful at this time.

GEMINI

(21 May - 22 June)

Extreme restlessness and discontent with the limitations of your current situation incline you to speculate and gamble on ways to quickly change your life. There is a strong tendency to exaggerate and put on a front to impress others to gain the advancement that you seek.

CANCER

(22 June - 23 July)

STUFFED FISH

This time is filled with stimulating discussions about controversial topics, unusual or offbeat ideas, or "crazy" schemes. The tempo of your life increases and may leave you feeling frazzled. Because you are quite restless, you may do or say things in haste that you will regret later.

LEO

(23 July - 24 August)

Your ability to concentrate on mundane concerns and problems diminishes now. The world of imagination, fantasy, entertainment, or art holds more attraction for you. Go to a movie with a friend (or write your own!). Also, your psychic sensitivity and intuition are heightened at this time.

Ingredients: Stuffing • 100g Spinach • 150 ml Chicken or Vegetable Stock • 100 ml White Wine • 40 ml Butter, at Room Temperature • 200 ml Couscous • 40 ml Chopped Dill • 30 ml Chopped Fresh Tarragon or 15 ml Dried Tarragon • 40 ml Chopped Parsley • Salt And Pepper To Taste • 1 Egg, Whisked

VIRGO

(24 August - 23 September)

Restlessness, nervous haste, and rashness can be something of a problem, for you act on impulse and may be out of sync with your environment. You feel that you have to fight for what you want or believe in, and you are very clear, decisive, and convincing right now, but you also tend to stir up more controversy or competitive feelings than is really necessary.

LIBRA

(23 September - 23 October)

Your thinking is rather gloomy and pessimistic at this time. You see the superficiality, the flaws, and the foolishness or impracticality in others' plans. Also, communicating with others is difficult now, and people resist what you are saying. You feel more inhibited and uncommunicative, and you sense that others are not receptive.

Emotional well-being and contentment characterize this time period. You feel quite relaxed and carefree, and this would be a splendid time for a vacation. Laziness, self-indulgence, and expecting everything to work out well with no effort on your part are negative possibilities now.

SAGITTARIUS

(23 November - 22 December)

Your thinking is rather gloomy and pessimistic at this time. You see the superficiality, the flaws, and the foolishness or impracticality in others' plans. Also, communicating with others is difficult now, and people resist what you are saying. You feel more inhibited and uncommunicative, and you sense that others are not receptive.

Exciting study and career opportunities still available Matriculants who were not successful in gaining access to one of South Africa’s twenty one universities or other higher learning institutions to further their studies need not despair. Opportunities to obtain globally sought after qualifications in the manufacturing sector are still up for grabs to qualifying applicants. Ninety five additional students will be selected in Cape Town for tool, die and mould making training as part of the National Tooling Initiative Programme’s TDM Powered Foundation and Apprenticeship Programmes. The programmes are presented at the Wingfield Campus of Northlink College in Goodwood. TDM Powered, a competencybased programme, stretches over a

period of three to four years and provides students with the basic, core and eventually specialist skills to enable them to qualify as tool maker artisans. The learning content of both programmes is structured to include fundamental and applied theory, trade theory, workshop practical training and on-the-job training, providing students with extensive industry exposure and experience. Once qualified, students can pursue careers in cross-cutting sectors such as the aerospace, automotive, chemical, electronics, leisure, marine, medical, mining and packaging industries. The 2013 intake of TDM Powered Foundation and Apprenticeship students is sponsored by the Depart-

ment of Trade and Industry. Students will receive a small stipend during Phase 3 to support them with transport costs to the companies where they will receive their on-thejob exposure and training. Cape matriculants, industry incumbents and out-of-school youth are invited to attend the “Careers in manufacturing and tool making” open day on 24 January from 09:00 to 15:00 at Northlink College, Wingfield Campus, SAS Wingfield Naval Base, Vanguard Drive, Goodwood. More information and application forms are available from the TDM Powered office. Please write to P O Box 35497, Menlo Park, Pretoria, 0102, e-mail info@tdmpowered.co.za, phone 071 675 3551 or visit www.tdmpowered.co.za.

CAMP: Koinonia’s peer educators held an appreciation camp in December 2012. It was a way of thanking the pupils for faithfully participating in the program. Ninety of the pupils who are from different nine schools in Drakenstein, were selected to attend the camp at Manyano Centre, Paarl. Here they celebrate with some of Koinonia’s staff.

KILOTREADS

With only a few days left to one of the main cycling events in the Boland, the BouckaertSoenen Paarl League Ride & MTB Challenge is well on track to present a day filled with challenges and fun for serious cyclists as well as the whole family. Organisers Paarl Rotary has everything in place to make the event on Sunday 27 January one of the most successful ever. Early on-line entries are showing an increase on last year’s as more entrants are making use of the discounted early entry fees. A fun feature is the 19 km untimed MTB race on Jan Phillips Drive along the lower parts of Paarl Mountain, geared towards development and participation by the whole family. All schools in the area have been encouraged to enter riders and anyone can enter this particular race for an affordable fee of R55. The school that enters the most cyclists will be awarded. The races start and finish at the Paarl Boys’ High sports fields in Brug Street with the first start at 06:15 and the cut-off time at 12:30. The road races are divided into three routes of 126 km, 72 km and 42 km, while the three MTB routes on Paarl Mountain measure 49 km, 42 km and 19 km. The league prize giving will be at 11:00 and the lucky draw is at 12:00. Drakenstein Municipality’s traffic department will be out in force on the day to regulate the flow of traffic and assist marshals in ensuring safety along the race routes. Because of traffic disruption due to the race routes, motorists are encouraged to exit to Paarl Mall and the N1 via Market Street, cross over the Berg River and turn right into Jan Van Riebeeck Drive. All proceeds from the event are channelled to community development projects through The Rotary Club of Paarl. Detailed information is available on www.paarlrotary.co.za
