publisher's note Happy October! The weather is cooling a bit and fall is in full swing. Our local calendar of events is filled with lots of fun things to do, while being able to properly social distance! We have the FUMC Pumpkin Patch, several outdoor markets, some Halloween events and so much more to look forward to!

This issue we feature a local business that I can highly recommend, Mr. Ammerman Intercultural Language Academy. My daughter attends Spanish classes with the Ammermans and thoroughly enjoys it. Matt and Jacqueline provide the option of in-person or online classes and work with their students, both children and adults, in interactive ways to learn language in fun and creative ways. EMBRACE VOLATILITY

If you are invested in the stock market either through individual stocks, mutual funds, or exchange traded funds, you know volatility comes with the territory. You can either run from it or embrace it and use it to your advantage.

It’s no secret that 2020 has been a very unusual year. And, it’s also been unusual in the financial markets in terms of volatility.

In fact, the S&P 500 Index suffered its fastest 30% drop of all-time. All-time is a long time. A key indicator of the level of volatility in the stock market is the Volatility Index, also known as the VIX. The VIX is typically in the mid-teens under “normal” conditions but is prone to moving higher when stock markets decline, especially in the midst of a major economic event. For example, on March 16th, 2020, the VIX reached almost 83 from a low starting point of only about 14 in mid-February. That’s a nearly 6x move in thirty days. With the VIX moving violently higher, it was not surprising to see the stock market in freefall.

Yes, volatility comes with investing in stocks, but over time investors are rewarded for bearing that volatility. JP Morgan has data going back to 1980 showing the average intra-year drop has been 13.8%. However, annual returns have been positive 30 of the 40 years. This data illustrates that those investors who used the temporary dips were rewarded by purchasing equities at lower prices.

When it comes to building an overall balanced portfolio, investors need to determine 3 things: 1. When will they need the invested money?

2. What type of volatility will they stick with?

3. What investments will help them achieve their long-term goals?

Time in the market matters. The longer one holds individual stocks or stock funds, the more likely the returns will be positive.

However, volatility is scary and it can cause you to make poor decisions under duress when volatility is high and the world seems as if it is coming to an end. Time and again despite how dark the outlook, the world has not ended, but yet during every event, a large number of investors sell just before stocks begin to recover.

They key to avoiding membership in that unfortunate investor group is to control the volatility of your portfolio through disciplined diversification. For example, bonds have historically

offered the ballast one needs to reduce volatility.

Generally, when stocks have experienced quick sharp downturns, bonds have been the investment where investors have turned. Oftentimes, bonds will tend to move opposite of the stock market during times of high equity volatility. There are a number of other asset types that can reduce volatility, including real estate investments which have offered a nice way to diversify equity allocations in a portfolio.

The quandary for investors in 2020 is whether bonds will offer the same volatility reduction in a portfolio they have in the past. Afterall, interest rates are near historic lows and according to the Federal Reserve, they may stay there for years.

Investors are continuing to look for ways to earn a reasonable return without taking on all the inherent volatility of the stock market. There are now various funds that invest in volatility as an asset class, and can offset the risk of catastrophic portfolio losses during large equity market declines. These types of funds can act as a “shock absorber” at times of extreme volatility and complement the rest of your portfolio allocation.

While there is no silver bullet when it comes to investing and nobody can certainly eliminate volatility, there are ways to navigate around it, and in some cases use it to your advantage. Through my Moxifit resources I was able to find an Eat the Rainbow challenge that would help him to expand what he was eating and achieve a more well-rounded diet. We really want our clients to create good habits and better relationships with food.”

O.W. Lee to Relocate Corporate Headquarters and Manufacturing Operations to Kendall County

The Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation (BKCEDC) and Kendall County Commissioners are pleased to announce the relocation of the corporate headquarters and manufacturing operations of O.W Lee from California to Kendall County, TX. O.W. Lee has purchased the 44-acre, 412,000 sq. ft. property located in Comfort, Texas.

For over 70 years, O.W. Lee has designed and produced fine, handcrafted casual outdoor furniture and fire pits. The family-owned business is expected to provide approximately 200 jobs and $24M in total capital investment. The relocation deal was a collaborative effort by the BKCEDC, Kendall County leadership, Tom Long with San Antonio EDF, BKCEDC Investor Russell Noll with Transwestern Realty, Ryan Boozer with Stream Realty, and Linda Burns with Wadley, Donovan Gutshaw Consulting.

“We chose to relocate to Texas due to the states favorable business incentives and policies, and for the central location for shipping,” said Terri Lee Rogers, President and VP of Sales. “The San Antonio area can meet our need for high quality metalworkers and welders, and we feel we can provide a good wage and be a positive business member in this community We are very grateful to the Kendall County Commissioners for their incentive support and the Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation for their assistance to our organization and consultants with the site due diligence and subsequent relocation orientation.”

According to Kathy Estes, Chair of the BKCEDC Board of Directors, “This project will provide a positive impact on the local economy by diversifying our tax base, providing new jobs for local residents and generating increased tax dollars spent in Kendall County, as well as throughout the region.”

Have you ever wanted to learn Spanish? Not just to know a few words or phrases, but to really know how to use and implement the language? The Mr. Ammerman Intercultural Language Academy believes that the way to truly learn a language is to help their students experience it in everyday life, to share and learn from others and to provide crosscultural experiences. “There is so much more to learning a language than just vocabulary.

We want to give our students the confidence to be able to use

Having started the Mr. Ammerman Intercultural Language Academy in Pichilemu, Chile in 2015, Matt, along with his wife Jacqueline Aguilera, moved to Boerne in 2018 and have opened a second location of the language academy. much of my life traveling through South America. I didn’t know Spanish, but was able to find work in Paraguay, Buenos Aires and Chile teaching English. This in turn allowed me to learn Spanish.” Once in Chile, Ammerman met Jacqueline and the two got married and they had three children. “I began to notice that when I would speak to my children in English they would respond to me in Spanish. It was very important to us that our kids be bilingual, so I started implementing my skills as a previous English teacher to teach my own children,” he said. “In Chile, the people have a strong desire to learn English.

They want the opportunities that knowing English can bring. So when our friends and family found out that Matt was teaching our children, they wanted their children to benefit from this as well. Eventually the amount of students grew and we decided to create the language academy,” added Jacqueline.

Matt and Jacqueline always knew that they would eventually move to the United States to allow their children to be immersed in the culture and to perfect their English. So a couple of years ago Chilean exchange students experiencing Texan culture.

they packed up their family and came to Boerne. “We were able to keep the language academy operating in Chile through Zoom classes while also opening a second location right here in Boerne,” said Matt.

Having the two locations really opens up a lot of experiences and chances to actively speak the language being learned. According to Ammerman, “We often have our local students interact with our students in Chile via online exchange. This way they are each able to actively engage with one another and begin to use the language that they are learning.”

The move to Boerne has also opened up another facet of the Mr. Ammerman Language Academy, which is the ability to offer students total language immersion through educational travel. “There is nothing better for learning a language than to practice it in its natural environment,” said Jacqueline. “Before Covid19 we were able to bring many of our students from Chile to Texas, where they stayed with us and we would take them on many excursions and road trips to everything from rodeos, to the Alamo and even NASA. We will even send them

down Main Street, Boerne and ask them to go talk to people and come back and give us a report about what they learned and saw.” Similarly, Matt and Jacqueline had planned to take some of their Texas students to Chile to experience the culture and practice their Spanish in a native environment. Those trips have been delayed due to Covid-19, but they remain hopeful to restart these exchange programs soon.

The vision behind the Mr. Ammerman Intercultural Language Academy is to be able to facilitate an exchange between both nations that generates experiences based on the learning of ideas, culture, innovation and entrepreneurship. “Many of our students have been with us for four or five years now. They have become like family to us and we have developed a bond beyond just teaching them another language. We know the benefits of learning another language and the opportunities that it can open up for them. Our Chilean students benefit greatly from having their eyes opened to what possibilities are out there, while similarly our students from Texas are given a chance to see just how blessed they are and continued on page 18

with English subtitles, listen to Spanish music, put up Spanish sayings or stickers around your house. I am also old school and love the use of flash cards. Keep them on you and whenever you have some spare time go through them to expand your vocabulary. The small things can make a huge difference.”

Ultimately, Matt and Jacqueline’s hope for their students is to be able to learn another language in an environment that is both productive and fun. They added, “It brings us joy to help our students truly experience the culture of the language they are learning, while quickly being able to speak fluently in that language.” BBM

realize not to take for granted everything that is available to them. One of the biggest compliments we have received is from a parent of a student that told us we not only have taught her child another language, but also how to mature as a person,” said Matt.

The language coaching classes offered by the Ammermans are open to all ages, from adults all the way down to preschool aged children. They are also available both in-person and online settings depending on preference. Online classes have skyrocketed since Covid, but Matt and Jacqueline still have many students who meet in person either one-on-one or in small groups. “When possible we try to take the classes outside of the classroom and create an environment for them to actively learn the language through small field trips or interactive lessons, games or even crafts,”

said Jacqueline. “I also work to get to know each student through different activities so that I can figure out how they learn best.

It takes about two weeks for me to figure out the learning tendencies of each student and then be able to implement that into the lessons.”

Matt and Jacqueline also believe strongly, especially for their older students, that to be able to learn a new language you have to have a “why,” a reason or a need to learn the language such as needing to learn Spanish to advance in your career or wanting to travel. Learning a second language comes a lot more naturally to children, but both kids and adults should create an environment that is conducive to learning a new language. “Having learned Spanish as an adult I know the importance of surrounding yourself with the language,” said Matt.

Boerne Sunrise Rotary has announced that their annual Patriot BBQ has been scheduled for October 24, 2020 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. This year’s event will be held in association with Tusculum Brewing Company which is located at 236 S. Main Street, Boerne (former location of Bergman Lumber) and Hungry Horse Restaurant.

Ticket holders will be able to pick-up their barbecue as a drive-through at Tusculum Brewing Company. Outdoor seating per Covid-19 regulations will also be available at Tusculum.

Two levels of tickets can be purchased for the event.

It’s Rod Run Time!

This year marks the 34th Annual Key to the Hills Rod Run, sponsored by The Pride of Texas Street Rods and Budnik Wheels.

On the weekend of October 9-11th Boerne’s Hill Country Mile will be filled with street rods in a rainbow of beautiful colors, checkered flags and crowds of people flocking to see Texas’ largest pre ’49 Rod Run. The Pride of Texas Street Rod Club was started in August of 1985. The first 15 members adopted the constitution and bylaws of the club and were ready to cruise together in their street rods.

Soon after, the group held the first Rod Run on May 2-3rd of 1987 at the Kendall County Fairgrounds with 53 registered participants. The following year, the club decided to move the run to Boerne’s Main Plaza and have the event in October instead of May. Everyone enjoyed having the Rod Run downtown and plans were made to keep the event at the Main Plaza on the second

weekend in October each year.

Club member Lanne Brehmer decided that if the event was going to grow it needed some advertising. A beautiful color brochure was designed, printed and mailed to street rodders throughout Texas and neighboring states. Over the years, the event continued to grow due to the club’s hard work, advertisement and street rodders spreading the word.

The brochures have become a trademark for the Key to the Hills Rod Run and have become a collector’s item.

Local merchants love the Rod Run and the foot traffic it brings to downtown Boerne. They support the event by hanging checkered pennant banners down Main Street and even donate door prizes to the event participants.

Be sure not to miss the colors, the chrome and the nostalgia of this fun event that has become a Boerne tradition! BBM

Leg pain often times goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as people dismiss it as a sign of aging. However, leg pain resulting from peripheral artery disease (P.A.D.) can lead to serious medical conditions if not diagnosed and treated in the early stages.

WHAT IS PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE OR P.A.D.?

P.A.D. is a critical, yet treatable, condition that cause blockages in the narrow passageways of the arteries preventing normal blood flow, especially to the extremities. This restriction of blood flow, over time, can lead to blood

clots increasing your risk of amputation.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE P.A.D.?

Have you had to limit your lifestyle or daily activities due to leg or foot pain? If the answer is yes, then it is important that you seek medical attention about your leg pain. Here are other signs and symptoms that your leg pain maybe related to the circulation, or lack of, in your legs or feet.

It is important to note that poor blood flow does not always directly cause symptoms, but it can lead to uncomfortable leg pain while walking. This is one of the key indicators that you are experiencing vascular-related symptoms associated with P.A.D. Although leg pain is usually a common concern, there may be other areas where you feel pain when you walk that could be related to P.A.D. Pain or aching in the calves, hip or buttocks while walking may indicate claudication. Claudication is pain or cramping in the lower leg due to inadequate blood flow to the muscles.

If you notice further pain in the feet or toes, especially at night, then take note of this concern or symptom as well. Pain in the feet or toes related to P.A.D. is often persistent but then subsides with rest.

Here’s an example of what you might experience. Throughout the day, you may experience somewhat intense pain in your legs while walking around the grocery store or running errands. You may try to relieve the pain with home remedies or over the counter medication. However, at nighttime, when you are resting, the pain subsides and you dismiss the pain as “nothing serious”.

The problem with this situation is that your ‘silent’ symptoms should not be ignored. Talk to your doctor about these concerns and individual risk factors (aging, abnormal cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, family history, etc.) to prevent limb loss or even death.

Texas housing market cools in August, sales still higher than same time last year

Texas’ housing market slowed in August after a surge of pent-up demand inflated sales numbers the previous month.

“Sales activity is no longer catching up from the economic shutdown that hindered the showing of homes and closings at the beginning of the spring buying season,” said Dr. James Gaines, chief economist for the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University.

“Existing homes sold through Texas Multiple Listing Services peaked in July as the economic consequences of the ongoing pandemic continued to develop.”

Existing-home sales fell 14.6 percent from July but remained 3.4 percent higher than in August 2019.

“Low mortgage rates supported the year-over-year increase, but the effect of that stimulus may dwindle if persistent unemployment shrinks the number of qualified homebuyers,” Gaines said.

According to the National Association of Realtors, existinghome sales at the national level increased for the third consecutive month on a seasonally adjusted basis and maintained double-digit year-over-year growth. They attribute the gains to robust demand but note rising supply-side constraints.

Center Research Economist Dr. Luis Torres highlighted the supply-demand imbalances that will challenge the housing market over the next year.

“While sales surged during the summer, the number of new listings hitting the market has not matched that recovery, worsening the state's housing shortages, particularly for homes priced less than $300,000,” said Torres. “This mismatch has pulled the months of inventory to record lows of fewer than 2.5 months.”

Diverging trends between the upper and lower price ranges have led to large increases in the median sale price for existing homes, which increased by more than 10 percent year over year for the second consecutive month, according to Center research.

“The initial economic shock from COVID-19 was concentrated in the service sector and other industries that rely on a younger workforce,” according to Torres. “These households are more likely in the market for lower-priced homes, and we’ve seen that market suffer disproportionately. The relative strength in upper price ranges is inflating the median sale price.
