RAISING A RUCKUS FOR A GREAT CAUSE
The Wild Game Dinner isn't just a party— it's the main event and primary fundraiser for the Kendall County Jr. Livestock Association. Every dollar we raise goes right back into our community, supporting local kids through agriculture. When we say, "we do it for the kids," we mean it! Your generosity directly funds the hard work and dreams of our incredible young people.
This year alone, the KCJLA has accomplished some amazing things:
• Awarded 21 scholarships totaling $58,000.
• Provided numerous grants to 4-H and local educational groups.
• Contributed $75,000 to the annual Kendall County Livestock Show and Sale and the Hill District Grandstand Stock Show and Sale, benefiting over 100 young people.
We're so proud of our youth, and it's a true pleasure to reward them for their dedication!

THE ROUX KREWE
Members: Trey Young, Ann Marie Young, Carla Young, Edd Young, Brandon Young. What are you cooking?
Quail and Andouille Gumbo
How much do you make? How long does it take to prepare and cook it all? We make roughly 50 gallons and start prepping first thing in the morning and let it cook for around 6 hours.
How many years have you been doing this?
This will be our 2nd year cooking for WGD. We have helped another team cook and serve for several years and my wife, Ann Marie, decided she wanted her own team.. here we are! Lol!
What is it about cooking for the WGD that you all really enjoy?
For us, the best part of cooking for WGD is getting to see people enjoy your food and know we’re raising money for our Ag kids that work their tails off!
Our team is all family, myself, my wife, my parents and brother. We grew up on my Mom and Grandma’s Cajun inspired dishes and I’ve always put my own spin on things.. We come from a family of exceptional cooks and it has definitely rubbed off on all of us!
DROPTINE COOKERS
Team Members: David Esser, Weston Hamilton, and Reid Schneider and families
What you're cooking? Pulled Pork Street Nachos
How much do you make? How long does it take to prepare and cook it all? We make 400 servings. Prep an hr and cooking 12hrs. How many years have you been doing this? This is our 4th yr What is it about cooking for the WGD that you all really enjoy? What we really enjoy about cooking for the Wild Game Dinner is the sense of community it creates benefitting our local youth. We get to share our love of food, work together as a team, and watch people light up when they try something new. It’s not just about the meal— it’s about the laughing around the pits , the stories being told, and the joy of bringing everyone together.
Our cook team started pretty casually—just a group of family and friends who enjoyed cooking together. Over the years it’s become a tradition for us. Some of our dishes are family recipes we’ve been making forever, and others we’ve created just for the WGD. We don’t cook as a team anywhere else—this event is our big show each year—and we love it because it brings us all together and hopefully serve something people will remember.
LA FAMILIA - ALL
PORK & NO BEANS
Team Members: Our team is made up of us 4 brothers, Joe Lozano, Jesse Lozano, Johnny Lozano, and P.J. Mecke-Lozano, our dad, Pete Lozano, uncle, Pancho Lozano, our sons, Judd Lozano and Simon Mecke-Lozano, and lastly, our Son-In-Laws, Austin Brewer and Conner Moehring. It's a plus that our wives and daughters come to help serve with us too.
What you're cooking? This year we'll be cooking up Pork Carnitas. How much do you make? How long does it take to prepare and cook it all? We make approximately 150 pounds of pork butts, it takes about six hours to cook all the meat we serve.
How many years have you been doing this? This is our second year cooking as team.
What is it about cooking for the WGD that you all really enjoy? We enjoy that we get to cook with family and friends, and meet all the WGD visitors, both new and old.
We started by helping our friends on the Grill Billies team, after a few years of helping we just migrated to creating our own group. Carnitas are something our family always cooked as we were growing up, and our dad, Pete Lozano, and uncle, Pancho Lozano, were butchers and cooks at Riverside, so we have always been a cooking family.

WGD Cook teams: Cooking for the First Responders
OOn July 18, our Wild Game Dinner team had the privilege of cooking for 160 first responders stationed at Comfort High School. These heroes from Nevada, Indiana, and Texas A&M Vet School had been working nonstop for weeks, and we wanted to give them a small token of our appreciation.
We struggled to find the words to thank them, but we knew the best way to show our gratitude was through our food. Our incredible Kendall County Wild Game Dinner cook teams rose to the challenge, and in just three days, we were able to serve a hot meal to these deserving men and women. We served up fried fish with hush puppies, chicken fried Axis and cream gravy, bacon wrapped quail, grilled sausage, Axis Chile and Frito pies, Pasole, pinto beans, and loaded mashed potatoes. We followed up with cobblers and homemade cookies. It was a feast!
A massive thank you to our incredible cook teams: Dutch Short (Sip N Shooters), Wayne & Duane Zoeller (Grill Billies), Dennis Asher (What the Fork), Cody Walker & Albert Stehling (Stehling and Walker), Joe Lozano (La Familia), and Stephen and Cindy Zoeller (Riverside Catering). A special shout-out to everyone who pitched in—this was a true team effort!

ABOUT KCJLA & THE KC WILD GAME DINNER
The Kendall County Wild Game Dinner is one of the hill country’s most anticipated events – and for good reason! People come from near and far to experience everything this event has to offer. “With each year, this event just keeps getting better and we are all so excited to see what it has become, and more importantly we are very proud of the money it has raised over the years to help our local youth,” said Beca Short, founder of the KC Wild Game Dinner.
The Kendall County Wild Game Dinner became the premier fundraiser for the Kendall County Junior Livestock Association in 2021. According to Joe Lozano, President of KCJLA, “Our missions were aligned with both organizations being focused on serving the youth of Kendall County by promoting education and agriculture. By joining forces, we were able to streamline our efforts and increase the funds raised to provide more opportunities to our local youth through scholarships, educational programs and leadership camps.”
“Last year we had approximately 3,000 people attend this event! Each and every one of them helped us to raise the funds to support our local kids through the purchase of their ticket, the raffles, live and silent auctions, participating in the games and supporting our vendors. We are truly grateful for the outpouring of support from all of those who attend and keep making this event a success each year,” said Short.
And let’s not forget the incredible amount of people who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the Wild Game Dinner goes off without a hitch! “We have so many volunteers who help with everything from the cook teams, to parking, ticket sales, raffles, the auctions, set up, tear down and clean up and the list goes on,” added Lozano. “Our KCJLA Board of Directors are a big help, but beyond that we have volunteers from local organizations, businesses, and just kind members of the community who believe in our cause and want to lend a helping hand. We could not do it without all of their help!”
We look forward to another great event this year and can’t wait to see you all on October 18th and then in January to support our Kendall County Junior Livestock Show and Sale!
BUYERS NEEDED FOR OUR KCJLA STOCKSHOW & SALE IN JANUARY
Our local 4-H and FFA kids work hard on their livestock and ag mechanics projects! They learn hardwork, grit, responsibility and so much more through these projects and we love to see them rewarded for their efforts at our annual SALE after the KCJLA Stockshow. Our local community is so generous, but our numbers keep growing and we need more local businesses, organizations and donors to help with funds and donations at the livestock auction. Please consider joining us for the 2026 KCJLA Stockshow and Sale.
Can’t Attend? Consider Joining or Starting a Buyers Cartel...
Many local businesses and organizations form buying cartels, or buying groups, where one or two people are in charge of bidding on the livestock projects for many organizations. The individual organizations still get announced at the auction under the Cartel name. It’s a great way to support our local youth even if you aren’t able to attend the auction.

A 4-H shotgun team set to get new shooting complex
At the 2025 Kendall County Junior Livestock Association Sale, funds were raised by the community for a new skeet and trap field complex for the Kendall County 4-H Shotgun Club. The need for the facility was presented and a whopping $121,800 was raised for the project – it was quite a site to behold as the generosity of our community began pouring out.
The plan is to build a private complex with two skeet and trap fields and a pavilion. The organization has worked with Kendall County to obtain land at the Youth Agriculture and Equestrian Center for the training facility.
In May, members of the 4-H Shotgun Club appeared
before the Commissioners Court to advocate for the project. Several students even took time off of school to share their desire for the facility where they will be able to safely practice the sport they love. The Kendall County commissioners unanimously approved the plans and the project is a go!
The new training facility will allow greater accessibility to the local 4-H Shotgun Club and offer more opportunities for them to practice. “Currently the kids have to go all the way to the National Shooting Complex in Kerrville to practice once a week for an hour or so. It’s hard for the kids to be able to get there on time after school before the facility closes and it’s a pretty far drive for a lot of families,” said Shavawn Barrett, 4-H Shotgun Club Manager.
Not only will the new shooting complex provide better access to the sport for local youth, but according to John-Mark Matkin, parent of one of the club members and local businessman who is heading up the project, “Shooting sports are quickly growing in popularity and there are lots of opportunities for youth for scholarships, etc. through the sport. Our area is growing so quickly, and now with a new training facility it will allow for our club to grow alongside of the community.”
When it comes to safety, you can be assured that the facility will exceed all safety standards. “Number 9 shot usually travels 130 to 160 yards, so we plan everything with a 230-yard shot radius. We have a good buffer for what we need,” added Matkin.
“The 4-H Shotgun Club's main objective is to teach 4-H members to responsibly and safely handle a shotgun, as well as marksmanship and sportsmanship. Having a local spot to call our
own and practice will not only be beneficial for our existing club members, but such a draw to get even more kids involved in this great sport,” said Shavawn.
The 4-H Shotgun Team is coached by Jason Barrett, along with the instructional help of John-Mark Matkin, Norman “Scotty” Scott, and many other parents. “Scott’s son, Gavin, received a full ride scholarship to Lindenwood in Missouri for Shotgun Sports and comes back from time to time to help out too. He has also been a great asset in helping some of the club kids get placed into colleges for shotgun sports as well,” added Shavawn.
As the plans for the new shooting complex begin to shape up, the Kendall County 4-H Shotgun Club will be looking for local businesses who are willing to
donate their services for work on the facility. “The more money we can save on construction and materials, the more we will be able to give back to local kids in scholarships,” said Matkin.

Dry Ground Mountain Lion Hunt
HExperience the Hunt of a Lifetime with High West Outfitters
Here’s your chance to hunt the most elusive and Apex predator in the US with High West Outfitters. One will experience the most stunning views the areas have to offer, as a cat will take you places many will never see. These hunts will carry you to nearly any mountain range you wish to see in the State of Texas, and sometimes many different
Mountain Ranges on one single hunt. The thrill of a Lion Hunt is not all in the trophy as it has so much more to offer. A person with any care for a K9 will be in complete awe at the ability, and stamina of a dry ground Hound. The amount of work and effort that goes into a true trained pack of hounds is unparalleled to any other hunt one can go on. The dogs will go through thick, and thin into areas and terrain that seem unpassable to man. These hounds are bred to do what they do, through generations of selective breeding, and love their job more than any animal you will ever witness.
The properties hunted are spread out through each of the West Texas mountain ranges, spanning over an incredible amount of country. High West Outfitters has access to pursue Lion in nearly every Mountain range throughout the Trans-Pecos region, offering their clients a very high opportunity at a mature cat. These hunts can be done by vehicle and on foot, or the “old school” way on the back of a Mule.
High West Outfitters’ lion hunts are conducted by a “team”. The team will typically consist of 2-3 sets of proven dogs, to insure a client a fresh set of dogs each day. This practice keeps their success rates at 85-90%, which is unmatched on Dry Ground. The hunts are set up as 6 Day hunts and can
HUNTING STORIES:
Local Hunters' Dry Ground Mountain Lion Hunt Tales
John-Mark, Turner and Cord Matkin experienced the Dry Ground Mountain Lion Hunt in the fall of 2022 at the Bruce Ranch in West Texas. High West Outfitters, Jim Breck Bean, and Jasper Klein guided this exhilarating and adrenaline rush hunt for John-Mark. According to John-Mark, “We got the dogs on the trail about 7:30pm on a big Tom. The Lion took off running straight up 200’ cliffs. We finally treed the lion in a canyon draw at around 11 that night. After a less than stellar shot John-Mark wounded it and it ran up the canyon, we all ran in hot pursuit in the dark up the draw. Jim Breck and Jasper were ahead and blood dropped on them! They immediately turned around and the mountain lion was sitting in a tree less than 5’ above us. John-Mark quickly made his way to the lion but could not shoot until Turner and Cord cleared under the lion. “I took the shot and he fell at our feet. Absolute rush of a lifetime!!!”
be broken into two trips. They have the ability, and dog power to run up to 3 hunters at a single time or can be done as a solo. Camps will vary depending on the time of year and type of preferred hunting method. All clients will have an inclusive stay, with meals and lodging for the duration of the hunt.
What’s Included:
Included in the package will 6 days of hunting, which may be broken up into two different hunts if needed. Meals, lodging, trophy prep, and all necessary equipment provided. This hunt will take place in West Texas during the winter or spring months of 2026, exact dates to be determined with the outfitter. The hunt will be conducted on foot, or horseback and can be physical at times.
Turner Matkin got to experience his Dry Ground Mountain Lion Hunt next. This one was a little more dramatic. In the spring of 2023 they returned for their second hunt with High West Outfitters. “We ran the dogs all day on horseback with no luck. We finally caught a track around 10pm. It was along a steep canyon and cliff, the dogs tracked and Jim Breck, GT and Turner followed,” said Matkin. John-Mark made the right call and slept in the truck avoiding the 45 degree weather and 30 plus mph winds. At about 5:00am they had to take a break and switched out with Breck and he stayed on the trail jumping the lion 4 to 5 times. “Finally after a 14 hour trail we got the lion in a deep crevice of the canyon at 2:00 pm the next day. I got the shot hanging off the edge of a cliff with somebody holding on to my belt loop.” said Turner. Needless to say Mama Bear Matkin was less than pleased with that video or her baby hanging off a cliff!
4-H CLUB
4-H Flip:
Kendall County Youth Give Old Furniture New Life Through 4-H FLIP Program
GGiving old items new purpose and style is at the heart of 4-H FLIP, a hands-on program that teaches youth how to restore and refinish furniture and household goods—while promoting sustainability, creativity, and life skills. Last year, 19 Kendall County 4-H members and leaders participated in the revamped program, making a big impact in their community with fresh coats of paint, craftsmanship, and a lot of elbow grease.
FLIP is designed to inspire young people to see the potential in worn or discarded items. From side tables and chairs to bookshelves and home décor, participants learn how to clean, repair, paint, and redesign pieces that might otherwise end up in a landfill.
“We’re not just flipping furniture—we’re building confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills,” said a local 4-H program leader. “It’s amazing to see how proud the kids are when they finish a project and see what they’ve accomplished with their own hands.”
Each FLIP project requires planning, budgeting, and a bit of trial and error. Youth often source furniture from garage sales, thrift stores, or even their own homes. The program also encourages peer collaboration and mentorship, with older 4-H members and adult volunteers guiding newer participants through each step of the process.
The 2024 relaunch of FLIP included expert-led demonstrations and new opportunities for youth to showcase their work—culminating in a display at the annual Kendall County 4-H Awards Banquet.
Coming in 2025: Shop FLIP at the Wild Game Dinner!
This year, the community is invited to browse and purchase completed FLIP projects at the 2025 Wild Game Dinner. All proceeds from FLIP project sales will directly benefit the Kendall County 4-H Program.
Looking ahead, Kendall County 4-H plans to grow the program even more, encouraging youth to use their skills not only for personal projects but also for
service—such as donating finished items to the local 4-H program or to benefit other non-profit organizations like Disabled Outdoorsmen USA (DOUSA). https://disabledoutdoorsmen.com
For more information about 4-H FLIP or how to get involved with Kendall County 4-H, contact the local Extension office at 830-331-8242.
Joshua Creek Ranch
Texas Hill Country
“I visited Joshua Creek for a corporate event. We hunted behind dogs the first afternoon and had a great experience. The guide was knowledgeable, knew his dogs well and was enjoyable to be around. The second day we did a driven hunt and had a great time as well. Overall, this place was beautiful, the staff were professional, and the hunts were exceptional. Lodge, food, and bar were also wonderful.”

JYPSY SISTERS
Hi everyone! I am Karen Schladoer and I own a fabulous store called JYPSY SISTERS in downtown Fredericksburg. For those of you who do not know me, I am a 4th generation of Fredericksburg. I have been in retail a majority of my life. Most people know me from the hay business my husband Jim Bob and I own or the barrel racing I do. I dabbled in a vintage/antique booth for a bit on main until the opportunity came around for a large retail store and I grabbed it.
JYPSY SISTERS has now grown to over 4,000 sq. feet of shopping bliss in the last 5 years. I carry everything from ladies & mens clothing, accessories, home decor, furniture, art, real turquoise jewelry as well as fabulous faux jewelry. We also have a year round vintage Christmas room. The store is very unique and it carries a western flare throughout. 905 East Main St. – Fredericksburg www.jypsysisters.com
THE PEARL ANTLER
Hey y’all! I’m Reagan — born and raised in Boerne, with deep family roots here. I’ve worked for other boutiques in the past and always had a dream to open my own. Back in 2015, with a $500 jewelry haul and momma Pearl (no, that’s not her real name!), we set up at Fredericksburg Trade Days under the name Bubba Glam. A few booths and brainstorms later, The Pearl Antler was born — a nod to my birthstone and that original glam vibe.
After some wild weekends braving Texas weather, I opened a brick-and-mortar shop in Boerne in 2016. We spent 7 amazing years in the little blue house on River Road before praying on our next step. In 2023, we moved to Main Street, and it's been an incredible blessing ever since.
Our boutique is more than just clothing — it’s a place to hang out, feel at home, and support our awesome community. We love giving back to local causes and connecting with our customers, many of whom have become dear friends.
We carry women's clothing (S-3XL), jewelry, accessories and home decor. The Pearl Antler is a lot of glamour, some sparkle, a little sass, well maybe a lot of sass, totally outrageous, a spoonful of sophistication, always patriotic, a sprinkle of hippie and of course a dash of darlin'.....

COUNTRY MUSIC, FASHION, AND SHOOTING SPORTS
FFA Duo Adds Chords and Keys to the Blue and Gold
The Texas State FFA Convention held in Fort Worth, Texas this past July is where many Texas FFA students eagerly await their Lone Star Degrees and Scholarship presentations, but for two Boerne High School FFA students, it was their chance to perform in front of 15,000.
Boerne High School juniors, Wesley Decker and Chase Galvan were independently interested in music and performance, but never dreamed of taking their talents to the stage. With the encouragement of their FFA teacher, Mrs. Tenessia Sawyer, the two began performing in class at least once or twice a week. Beyond finding their confidence on stage, Wesley and Chase learned to blend their vocals and instruments and how to use audio equipment.
The pair logged countless hours practicing, performing in class and at the Boerne High School FFA Banquet. They won the talent showcase contest at the Area VII State FFA convention, advancing them to the State FFA convention and the “big stage” in the Fort Worth Dickies arena. Wesley and Chase say they will never forget the energy and size of the crowd in front of them and feeling grateful they got to experience it together.
“God gave you two the opportunity to play in front of 15,000 people and you did the best you could, there’s nothing more exciting than that.”
Disney Inspired Design and Refashioning
Mary-Anna MacFarland will dawn her Disney Frozen-inspired dress at the 4-H Family and Consumer Science National Championship in early 2026 with hopes of a high placing. She is only one of five Texas 4-H’ers selected to compete on the national stage, after placing first at Texas 4-H Round-Up. I’ve always been inspired by the incredible outfits in Disney films . . . [and] I wanted to bring one of these magical looks to life while adding my own creative twist,” said MacFarland.
That creative twist was creating a sustainable costume by using a variety of materials and not conforming to a purchased pattern. Mary-Anna used satin curtains and other thrift items. She hand stitched and cut all the gold details on her dress. “This project became more than just a costume—it’s a way I can show that fashion can be imaginative, stylish, and eco-friendly.”
“Every skill I’ve learned in 4-H is a tool I’ll carry for life.”
Nationals Within Their Sights
These 4-H’ers aren’t spurred by hype songs or cheering fans, just the quiet cadence of their breath to get in the zone. Matthan Ellis and Aspen McCallum started archery and precision rifle in our Kendall County 4-H clubs, but their character and skill allowed them to sight-in the 2025 National Shooting Sports Championship Match.
Matthan and Aspen were selected to represent the state of Texas through application and performance. Each competed at the Texas 4-H State Games which meant weeks of travel and competing in dozens of shooting events and disciplines. Not only where Matthan and Aspen judged on shooting accuracy, but on sportsmanship, willingness to learn, adaptability and maturity, as well. Upon invitation after the Texas 4-H State Games, they applied to the Texas Team detailing their community service, leadership, and shoot sports involvement.
Both were selected to represent Texas at the 2025 National Shooting Sports Championship Match this summer in Grand Island, Nebraska. Matthan competed on the Smallbore Rifle team in Silhouettes, Civilian Marksmanship Program, and 3-Position. Aspen competed with the Compound Archery Team in 3D, Field, and FITA.
